RE: [ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee's Reviews
I have acquired the CD twice but I admit I have used them very little. I find that the reason for this is that the CD is not timely. MY library is small with a small budget. I am interested in the reviews for collection development. By the time it comes out I have money to spend only on the winners or honor books that I have missed. Maybe some of the notable books too. But because they are already endorsed by the committee, I don't really need the reviews themselves. BUT, it is disturbing if I have totally missed many of these recommended titles which came out during the previous year. This year that happened, one of the winning titles was already not available at Amazon and I had to purchase it from a used book store. I would have liked to see the reviews closer to the publication dates, or at least the list of titles, so I could have considered them when they were new. It is very hard to identify children's books of Jewish interest. I think it would be helpful if at least the titles received from the publishers each month (though reviews as they are written, both positive and negative, would be nice to have), could be posted on the AJL or Sydney Taylor website as they are received so we could know to be looking for them and trying to evaluate them ourselves in a more timely fashion. Re: [ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee's Reviews
I've bought these twice, and the second time--no, I never read the CD. I'd prefer having them in print format, where I can read some, mark my place, then continue where I left off another day, and especially have the ability to read them when I'm not at my desk. It's simply more versatile and convenient that way for me. I am curious to know what various committee members thought of some books, and there are some people whose opinion I come to especially respect, but having to use it as a CD is limiting, and I didn't buy it last time. Re: [ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee's Reviews
I have bought them also and I agree with Andrea. I have found print format more convenient and much more likely to be used as an ongoing resource, especially now that I'm not in the trenches. I didn't buy it last time either but I miss having the info available. [ha-Safran]: Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee's Reviews
Dear Colleagues: The Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee produces a compilation of its reviews each year and makes it available on CD. We are currently evaluating new ways of disseminating this information, and would appreciate your input: If you acquired a Quest for the Best Sydney Taylor Book Award CD-ROM at a convention or by ordering it from AJL, did you ever put the CD into your computer and take a look at the documents stored on it? If so, how was reading the reviews helpful? Did it assist you with collection development? With preparing for booktalks or other programming? In some other way? Is the format of the review compilation useful to you (ie. being on CD-ROM, being arranged alphabetically by title, etc.)? What elements of the compilation are useful to you? __ introductory material (history of Sydney Taylor and the award, criteria for recognition, lists of past winners) __ scores given by committee members to each title __ positive reviews __ negative reviews I am anxious to receive your feedback at ch...@sydneytaylorbookaward.org. Thank you for your input.
