Re: [ha-Safran] Resources on Jews during European Exploration
Artscroll published a book for youth in 1986, The Exiles of Crocodile Island, by Henye Meyer. The description on Amazon says it is a story of a community of children torn from their homes by the Inquisition and their defiant struggle to keep their faith. The ISBN number is 0899067727. [ha-Safran] Library position with Congregation Agudat Achim
Hey there all you campers! Cong Agudat Achim, Schenectady (NY)throws an awesome Carrot Festival http://www.agudatachim.com/carrot-festival every year with llamas (animal, not dalai), carrot cake, carrot juice, vegetables, baked goods, what looks to be a lizard petting zoo, and all sorts of other hippy-dippy stuff which is right down my alley and which I might just visit one of these years. FYI, for those who wouldn't mind working as a volunteer librarian and happen to live in/around/near Schenectady, the congregation, according to this week's e-bulletin, is offering such a Volunteer Librarian Position. I don't know if they are looking for a congregant to fill the vacancy or are open to a qualified happy unknown*. *I don't know if a bit of pocket money might be wheedled; couldn't hurt to ask. But the sinagoga looks awfully nice and people who love carrots speaks for itself. Here's what the e-bulletin has to say: * Congregation Agudat Achim http://www.agudatachim.org/Library * To allow our wonderful library to continue to function we need to fill this volunteer position. The library is updated for the 21st century with a computerized catalogue and all of the books have been reorganized. This position does not require a great deal of time. For further information call Sylvia Winer at 393-8489 or Ruth Fraster at 370-2440. Summer is winding down! Here in Valencia it is already smelling like autumn. [ha-Safran] Moldovan Family Holy Land Map Collection now on-line
Dear Safranim: Now viewable on-line via the Penn Libraries' website is the Moldovan Family Holy Land Map Collection: http://sceti.library.upenn.edu/moldovanmaps/index.cfm The physical collection was built over several decades by Dr. Alfred Moldovan and his family. It consists of 94 discrete maps dating from 1480-1797, printed in 23 distinct locations across Europe. The majority of the maps were printed in the 17th and 18th centuries in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Basel, Lyon, Paris, Rome, Strassburg, Tuebingen, and Venice. There are over fifty cartographers and engravers represented, including Adrichem, Bunting, Calmet, Hole, Mercator, Munster, Ortelius, Visscher, Wit, and Ziegler. It also features the unique surviving copy of Antonio De Angelis’s map of Jerusalem, printed in Rome in 1578. These digital facsimiles were presented to the Penn Libraries by Dr. Alfred Moldovan before his death in 2013. Dr. Moldovan was one of the world’s foremost Judaica collectors over the last half-century, an expert on the authenticity of Jewish ceremonial art, and a hero of the Civil Rights movement. As a founding member of the Medical Committee for Human Rights, Dr. Moldovan attended the famous March on Washington, D.C. in August 28, 1963 and provided a medical presence at Selma, Alabama on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. We are grateful to the late Dr. Moldovan, to his son Joseph Moldovan, Penn C'76, and to the entire Moldovan family for their support for our Judaica collections and programs. I agree that although the Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean is an excellent book the reading level and content is far more suitable to middle and high school. Although if you can hold of the following book, The Jewish Traveler: Hadassah Magazine's Guide to the World's Jewish Communities ad Sights 1994, edited by Alan M. Tigay you will find great info of Jews across Europe and even current times information. It's so fiction, but More Precious Than Gold by Evelyn Mizrahi Blatt describes experience in Spain during Inquisition. Very popular with 3rd graders.
