Dear safranim,

Thank you so much for the multiple emails and offers to translate that
Hungarian sentence! I was able to get assistance - and VERY QUICKLY! I am a bit
overwhelmed with the response but should have known that AJL librarians rock!

Thank you,
Rachel

A stunning elegy to a vanished time, Caroline Heller’s memoir traces the lives
of her parents, her uncle, and their circle of intellectuals and dreamers from
Central Europe on the eve of World War II to present-day America. The story,
set primarily in prewar Prague, brings to life the lost world of European café
culture, and reminds us of the sustaining power of literature in the most
challenging of times. Professor Heller is the director of the interdisciplinary
Ph.D. program in Educational Studies at Lesley University, where she also
teaches in the graduate school of education.

Re: [ha-Safran] Hasafran Digest, Vol 244, Issue 3

2016-09-07 Thread Bernard D. Cooperman
Sheryl Stahl asks about Jewish content in Gene Wilder’s fiction. Although very
few people mention this film, I think one of his greatest early performances
was his portrayal, opposite Margot Kidder, of an Irish manure collector in
“Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx.” I have regularly used this film
in courses on Jewish history because of the remarkable way in which the working
class hero is taught about, identifies with, and then mis-appropriates his
“own” history at the urging of a rich American college student who comes to
enjoy his “native” culture. It is a charming and less controversial way to get
students to think about the use and mis-use of history, about the “real
experience” of study abroad, and about cultural progress generally. The DVD is
available cheap (but intermittently) from Amazon.

[ha-Safran] Help with Young Adult Triolgy Query

2016-09-07 Thread Temple Beth Emeth Library
Hi all,

I received a query from a today I'm hoping someone can help me with:

"Do you know the name of a trilogy young adult book series that was written
in the 1980's about a young Jewish woman (or middle eastern woman) who lived
during the time of the birth of Israel in the 1960's, who falls in love with
a Chasidim or middle eastern man? Theirs was a forbidden love but the stay
close during the war in Israel. They lose track of each other, with separate
lives but then come together in the last book."

Thank you for your help

Clare Kinberg, Temple Beth Emeth Ann Arbor Library

[ha-Safran] Article in an old issue of Pakn-treger

2016-09-07 Thread Zachary M Baker
Friends and colleagues,

I'd like to track down Abraham Nowersztern's article, "Dos Poylishe Yidntum,"
in issue no. 15 of The Book Peddler = Pakn-treger (1991), pp. 16-19, according
to RAMBI. The issue is lacking in both at Stanford and in my personal genizah.

Thank you in advance,
Zachary
