And if anyone remembers "wasn't there a bindery in Charlestown?", yes,
there WAS, but Acme / HF Group has now moved out of the region completely,
alas.

[ha-Safran] Seeking two books from Pinking Shears Publications

2022-03-15 Thread Kimberley A Shaw via Hasafran
Dear members of HaSafran:
does anyone besides me remember a book called "Letters & pictures from the
old suitcase" by Lillian (Lil) Blume and Ellen S Jaffe, from Pinking Shears
Publications in Hamilton Ont, published in 2011? It was announced on
HaSafran back when, and I'm hoping to obtain a copy for the Wellesley
College Library, as Jaffe herself is an alumna, and her friends are making
sure her books are properly represented in our collections.
The other book I'm seeking is "Twelve moons and six more poems", also from
Pinking Shears, 2010.
If anyone knows of any available copies, or where/how I may find some,
please let me know -- the usual sources (bookfinder etc) have not produced
any copies so far.
Best regards,
Kimberley Shaw

[ha-Safran] Obsolete media in synagogue libraries

2022-03-01 Thread Kimberley A Shaw via Hasafran
Dear Andrea and members of HaSafran:
To be devil's advocate, we've just digitized a DVD because its contents
were wanted by a patron, there was no DVD release, and there was also no
library-friendly or non-paywalled digital release available.
So to me, it would depend on content, as VHS are known to transfer well to
digital content, patrons can use THAT, and the original tapes live
"backstage" as archival backup.
Best regards,
Kimberley Shaw

Re: [ha-Safran] looking for an editor to take on unusual project

2017-07-19 Thread Kimberley A Shaw
Leslea Newman is a professional editor who loves to support new writers --
and really understands how to transmit a "different" point of view to a
mainstream audience. She was of enormous help in making my Deaf-themed
first novel presentable enough to become published; she makes you work
hard, but is worth every dollar I paid for her services Here's her link:

I would love to read this fellow's work, when ready -- and so would my
Aspie spouse!
Best of luck to this new writer,

Here is another self-promotion! This book may be especially appealing to
the Harry Potter crowd.
In "A Handful of Spells" (Savvy Press 2014, 9781939113283), Caitlin Leo
struggles to find her place in a world in between Deaf and Hearing, Jewish
and gentile ... and magical and "Plod".

Re: [ha-Safran] Crumbling Yiddish Book from 1938 What to do With it?

2015-01-22 Thread Kimberley A Shaw
Hello Michelle:
Even though this title has been fully digitized at the Yiddish Book Center
(see http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/books/search), there are times, as an
author, when I prefer to do my research with hands-on paper sources.
And so, my inclination would be to construct this kind of enclosure for
keeping the book in one piece while on the shelf and to limit further
physical damage:

https://www.nedcc.org/free-resources/preservation-leaflets/4.-storage-and-handling/4.5-protecting-books-with-custom-fitted-boxes
.
Quick fix, not too pricey. Quite a few of the older & more beat-up books at
my workplace have this kind of enclosure around them.
NEDCC also conducts "Preservation 101" workshops for those interested in
learning how to care for fragile, damaged, or endangered books, files, and
photos.
Best of luck,

Re: [ha-Safran] All-of-a-Kind Family

2013-02-14 Thread Kimberley A Shaw
Alibris is one of my all-time favorite sites for locating out-of-print
books! They currrently have several of the All of a Kind books. This site
exists in two forms, "Alibris for libraries", plus their regular website
for the general public.
   See:
http://library.alibris.com/booksearch?wtit=all-of-a-kind+family&wauth=&wquery=&x=0&y=0
Maybe an angel or two could buy/donate copies of the other volumes?
Truly, the books of this series ought to *stay* in print, up there with the
"Little House" books. Loved 'em as a kid, still do now.

Re: [ha-Safran] Fantasy/Sci FI Books for middle readers & YA

2012-08-06 Thread Kimberley A Shaw
Hello all:
now I wish my own manuscript had more Jewish content in it! It's well
within the "Harry Potter" genre, and it does have a scene where the heroine
realizes just how easily Jewish holidays can get swamped by mainstream
culture, but her Jewishness isn't really driving the plot.
I hope to find a publisher for it soon.

Re: [ha-Safran] Webinars that don't stink?

Sure! Here's a link to ALA. The webinar I'm attending no longer shows up at
the "e-learning" page, unfortunately.

I'm currently attending a 3-part ALA-sponsored webinar that is actually
interesting. It has the feel of a real discussion, but is also set up on
the screen with the slides on one side, and an instant-message screen on
the other for people to post comments, concerns, and queries as the
presentation is happening.
Unlike other webinars I've done, they've designed this one so that it's
very easy to key in comments -- and to see what other participants are
saying in real time! I could follow it on Twitter too, if I chose, but am
busy enough as is with the main presentation and comments.
The presenter also sets an approachable tone and is heavy on practical
real-world hands-on details, rather than droning on about the kind of
theory that would become boring. So, for a webinar to work, I think it has
to be really well designed and well presented.

Re: [ha-Safran] Shomer Shabbat and Working in the Public Library

2012-05-10 Thread Kimberley A Shaw
It could be that the churchgoers are afraid that somebody might ask *them*
to work on a Sunday someday. Having libraries be closed on Sunday looks
like "religious accommodation" to me! But people don't often see it that
way because a Christian point of view is such an automatic part of the
cultural background in so many environments.
