[OT] Explosive decompression on the horizon...

2001-10-09 Thread Timothy J. Outman Jr.

Hi Everyone,

I know this is off topic but I am running out of ideas and don't want to
shut-down my half-life servers (and everything else) for good. I was
working at a high tech start-up that went belly up after the terrorists
rained down their hell on the 11th. If anyone knows of a company hiring in
their IT department for sys admin, net admin, manager, or director of IT, I
would be forever grateful. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Regards,

Tim

RE: Set the IP the Server should use

2001-10-03 Thread Timothy J. Outman Jr.

You are correct in that most routers running NAT do not have translations
set up by default for unsolicited inbound traffic. If the router has the
capability (some really cheap ones don't... scary thought!), setting up NAT
at the router with port forwarding aka Port Address Translation (with the
correct settings) for the desired (in this case Half-Life) inbound traffic
will solve the problems of people getting to the HLDS server from out on the
Internet. Before I had my current setup (enterprise class network with a
full public Class C), I ran in this configuration using a Netopia R9100
router which worked great. BTW-routers also have a loop back address of
127.0.0.1 which is used mostly for testing.

Tim

I wasn't refering to loopback on your machine. I was talking about
loopback in the router and how a lot of people mistakenly think their
server is down because they get no response in gamespy using their
external ip. You also do not need to forward port 27010 since it's
outbound.

Hi,

What kind of router do you have? When you set up NAT, you also want to
set up port address translations (PAT) for 27015 and 27010 to goto the
correct internal private IP address from the Internet. (BTW-This has
nothing to do with loop back which is 127.0.0.1 and used mostly for
interface testing).

Here's an example with PAT enabled:

Unsolicited Connection Request -- Port 27015 -- Public IP
16.139.48.225 -- Private IP 192.168.1.225

Here's what happens with PAT unconfigured:

Unsolicited Connection Request -- Port 27015 -- Public IP
16.139.48.225 -- PACKET DROPPED

BTW-You also need to create a mapping to allow ICMP to that private
address as well.

Tim

Subject: Set the IP the Server should use

Hi,

I have a problem setting up my server. I have a LAN and an Internet
Connection on my machine. Everytime I start the Server it takes the IP
of the LAN Device and send it to the Master Servers. So Nobody can
connect to my Server if he dont know the correct ip.

Is there any way to tell the Server which IP it should sed to the master
servers?

thx

I'm looking for some bots I can run on my server. I looked at RhoBot, but
AFAIKT, it can't be run with another mod. I'm currently running Severians,
does anyone know of any bots that can be run with other mods like this?

  Thatfeature would be very cool!!!

  Isn't it
possible to increase the download rate for HLDSor would that cause
players, once connected, to take up too much bandwidth? I seem to
remember seeing a setting somewhere that does
  this.

  I
don't think it will make it into Half-Life, but maybe in Half-Life
  2?
  It
would be great is you could offload downloads to somewhere
  else.

  Like
Unreal Tournament, you put all the files on a web server and tell the game to

  redirect to http://www.webpage.com/utfiles/ and
you get the file quicker and it does
  not
effect the game. Works great for LANs! 2MB map in under 2
  seconds!

  Wishful thinking...
