How about not installing the ds to the same dir as hldsupdatetool?

I just did a fresh install of EVERYTHING and still the same error starting

I used the steps on installing a server from here:
 http://www.srcds.com/db/engine.php?subaction=showfullid=1097362093

I re downloaded hldsupdatetool.exe and installed to c:\srcds. Went to the
 command prompt and entered:
 cd \srcds
 hldsupdatetool

Hldsupdatetool updated to bootstrapper version 35

I closed out of the command prompt and reopened and entered:
 cd \srcds
hldsupdatetool -command update -game l4d_full -dir c:\srcds

The server files are downloading at this point. At the end of the download I
 get this error:
connection reset, winstock 10054 connection reset by peer

 Is that normal?

I then copied in my server.cfg and started up the L4D server and got the same
error for tier0_s.dll and typing status in to the console crashed the server.
I was getting pretty PO'd at this point so I took a break from the L4D
server and starting working on the TF2 server. I moved the TF2 folder back
in to the srcds folder and re-ran the update tool for TF2 with -verify_all.
When the update tool finished the L4d server just started working as it
should and no tier0_s.dll error. Now that has me completely confused but I
won't sweat it as the L4D server and TF2 server are working again. Thanks
for the suggestions they really helped me nail this problem down! :)

 Hi,

I don't think your config is the issue, as the errors you are getting look
like there is something wrong with your server files rather than with your
 server.cfg.

You can try the simple cfg here:
 http://gamerslifeline.com/left-4-dead-server-config-file-server-cfg-t3297.ht
 ml

You will most likely find, if you remove your config all together, it will
still crash. At this point a fresh vanilla install would be my suggestion,
make sure it works and then add back your files.

Your config needs a lot of work, but I guess that's not the point of this
thread. First off, remove -password from the update line. It's not been
needed for a long time now. Second, add -verify_all in place of it. It
looks like you're fully updated, but there may be a file consistency

 problem

 somewhere in your directory.

I believe there was a cheat, at least for CSS, where it flipped that
players viewangles (so their head hitbox was actually in their upper
chest), so you couldn't HS them. If you spectated them, everything would

take two head shots from a sniper rifle and live?

Is there any chance that valve could expose a public list of updates
which are available on steam for the HL2 mods which are on steamworks.
Server updates are of most interest to me (and the rest of this mailing
list, I'm guessing), but something like an rss feed for all steamworks
updates would be excellent for the gaming community at large.

you're running cracked servers and condoning piracy.

Because right now I think valve made an update which has screwed the
steam system over. (That is my personal view anyway).

I got gifted L4D, and couldn't download for 3 hours, because every time
i tried to install it I was promped for my password because my ticket
expired. This happens every time the download stalls, and requires the
blobs to be deleted and me to relogin again to get the download moving.

Also happens for other games, so I think its to do with Steam servers
rather than any game engine itself or VAC.

there a new cluster of master servers? If so, then why are games like

this thread is still going on with speculation about how to do it.

When a game client downloads a file from an sv_downloadurl, it submits as
the referrer the game server it is connecting to. This is why limiting
 access by referrer works.

With Apache, as mentioned earlier, you can use this script in a htaccess
 file.

 SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^hl2://12\.34\.56\..* AllowDownload
 Order Deny,Allow
 Allow from env=AllowDownload
 Deny from all

You can insert any regular expression you want to match the referer. This
one will allow all game servers starting with 12.34.56 to use the download
 URL.

Alternatively, use the script mentioned later.

 RewriteEngine On
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^hl2://0.0.0.0:
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^Half-Life\ 2$
 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1 [F]

Again, any regular expression should work.

A quick google search returned this from a forum from 3 years ago, that
seemed to work well enough for me:

 RewriteEngine On
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^hl2://0.0.0.0:
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^Half-Life\ 2$
 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1 [F]

I changed the 0.0.0.0 to (x.x.x.x|y.y.y.y) in the .htaccess file. While
my client was able to successfully download the map, using a web browser
I was forbidden to view the directory.

I stand corrected, the most elegant way would of course be to only
allow downloads from hosts that are already connected or connecting to
 the game server.

The problem is is it's not YOUR server IP that is used to connect. It is
connecting clients IP's.

The best way I can think of is a plugin. OnClientConnect (If run before
downloads start), add the ip to a database, and then use url rewrite and
get a php script to handle the downloads.

Is there any way of preventing any connections to my fast dl server other

I found using Bzip2 to compress maps and related content to not be
compatible with Source games, the clients just never saw them.

This was both Win32 and Linux servers referring to both Win32 and linux
 based webservers.
I tested this extensively (but was a year or so ago).

The only thing that worked was to let the Game Server compress the files to
.ztmp, move the .ztmp files over to the web server and then rename the .ztmp
extensions to .bz2 - make sure the extension is lower case on a linux based
 webserver.

 Step by step:
 ---
 1. run the map,
 2. disable http downloading (sv_downloadurl )
 3. connect a client with none of the custom content
 4. let it download and enter the map
 5. copy everything that was compressed into .ztmp to the web server
 6. rename all the .ztmp extensions on the web server to .bz2

 7. then re-enable sv_downloadurl with your url and test again with a clean
client to verify all the .bz2 files are downloaded from the web server

.res file are never compressed by the server and only .res is accessed on
the web server, but they are small.

you can use bz2 to compress any file as long as you maintain the directory
structure and I don't think you can use zip but why would you use it anyway
when bz2 does the same thing by the way, you don't really have to compress
sound files. bz2 reduces sizes of sound files only little bit

You would need an admin mod (Lua) to do this with.

However, I joined your tf2nades.com arena server (If you don't host

 your

 I

 playing

on a server (100tick) I am usually getting about 6-10KBps from the

 server,

so spreading that out to 10 clients would mean that you would be

 having

 to

put out at least 100KBps over your wire, which just isn't

 possible..

 If

 it's
within your price point you might consider looking at getting a

 hosting

 running

it off of a home(?) connection...

 Hope this helps,

Remove ALL addons

Remove ALL third-party scripts

Update your server via the hldsupdatetool

Try again. If it still does it, you will need to send the MDMP to garry

Jake E wrote:

I see the console only, and if I choose to launch it, the Srcds Watchdog,
which restarts the console everytime it crashes, which is about, 2 seconds
 (i counted the timestamps).

Also, after every crash, a MDMP file is created. If you want me to attach
it, I can, because I don't have the proper program to open it.

It looks like the RCon bad password crash is back following this last
update. I was able to reproduce it by sending a command to the server
via my ingame console and using the wrong password. Once the server
kicked/banned me, it crashed. Hopefully, Valve can include the
regression fix with the _resetgamestats exploit.

Sounds like they're using the default TCAdmin settings. In which case
you wouldnt be able to
upload amxmodx or metamod anyway...

Write to your host, say that -nomaster wont do jack for traffic, the
only reason that it uses less bandwidth is because its not listed, no
players are querying it.

 Hi,

I am paying for a hosting which is having excelent reliability and is
the first hosting that gives me everithing i need.
They have excelent performance and low ping for international players
(My community is open for the best Half-Life players of Latin America).

But they have an only negative point... They adds -nomaster to ALL of
 their servers.
The reason is that the queries done to the server produces high traffic.

My question is: ¿Is there any way to make server to apear in list anyway?
I am thinking about deceiving master servers sending server info or
 something simillar.

 Thank you

Re: [hlds] Possible CS:S server exploit?

Have you tried removing all Eventscripts? It seems that it loads one and
then starts to shutdown.

I run a CSS surfing server (on windows server 2003) with mani admin (via
sourceMM) and eventscripts (and the es_tools addon) along with many custom

back up. I spoke with one of the players who was in my server at the time,
and someone allegedly said they were going to crash it; shortly after the
server went down. It now refuses to start back up, and the final console
lines in this screen shot are what it says before crashing and then
attempting to restart via my keepalive batch script:

 http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/364/46784441qg3.jpg

I know these errors have been seen before (via google searches), but what
really intrigues me is what followed. Thinking I may have a bad memory stick
I copied the entire srcds directory to another computer hoping it might
work, but the exact same thing happens. Then just for kicks I decide to try
running the hldsupdatetool, first of all it turns out I was not running the
most recent version of the srcds, so it attempts to update it (I'm thinking
that may have been part of the problem). It begins to update, but what I
find odd is that the percentages are above 100%, quite far past 100% in some
cases; I cannot remember the exact numbers here but it was quite large. Now
I am very perplexed as to what the problem might be, so I decided to run the
updater again, but this time specify the -verify_all flag. I caught the
percentages this time, and it starts verifying at 0.00% and stays there for
a while, then abruptly jumps to 154300.00% and then finishes at
348441500.00%, after completion reporting my hlds installation is up to
date. It would appear that something has been seriously compromised and/or
corrupted within my srcds installation somewhere, but I am not sure exactly
 what.

What leads me to believe that this was an intentional act of malice is that
my server was running just fine for weeks prior to this incident, then last
night without me changing anything, my server is totally broken. I am
currently in the process of starting with a fresh install and porting all my
settings over to the new installation (as well as updating a few of the
plugins which I now know were outdated versions, perhaps this will help in
the future too) hoping to fix things.

I am really just wondering though if anyone has heard of anything like this
before, or is aware of any known exploits or vulnerabilities which exist/may
have existed in older versions of the srcds. I am trying my fresh install on
version 95 which I believe is the most recent version.

While you are doing this disable all addons and see if it fixes it.

If that doesn't fix things then I'll start disabling/enabling my different

I would guess either a ghost server, or when te server crashed it
crashed hard, and windows/linux didnt release the port / ip address /
process.

 Now I truly am confused...
I have changed nothing (on my server or the copy I made onto my local
workstation) since the time of my original post, when things were not
working. Just for the hell of it I decided to fire it back up, and it
almost magically works; both locally and on my server. Let me repeat
myself, I have changed nothing in the 18 or so hours since it
originally stopped working. I really am clueless right now...

Guys, I agree, this has gone far enough for me to create a filter to
move all these messages to the trash.

If you want to let off steam, spam the SPUF forums and see how the mods
like it (Guaranteed they will NOT like it).

If anything, take it off-list, this is for hlds related talk not your

PHX 2 and 3 together will CLASH. Only install PHX3.

Do you get any errors in the server-side or client-side console? Is your

Remove all mods and then add them one by one.

 - Fixed backburner's flame critical hits not being recalculated after

once and after that the flame could score a critical hit again even if
 the orientation changed
 - Added back some damage falloff to the Pyro's flamethrower. Not nearly
as extreme as it was before the Pyro class pack
 - Fixed bug that caused Demomen to take a small amount of extra damage
from their own grenades and fly farther using them
 - Fixed spy getting stuck in players after removing his disguise
 - Fixed spy stabbing and being able to go invisible instantly
 - Fixed spy disguised as enemy medic being able to spam voice commands
 - Fixed buffed health not decaying properly after being healed by a
 dispenser
 - Selectable menus can now be operated with number keys even if they are
not bound to slot1, slot2, etc.
 - Removed the remaining speed adjustments for carrying intelligence (a
couple of game modes still reduced your maxspeed)
 - Fixed a buildable item placement bug where the object would not rotate
after the user tried to place in an invalid location

I think they meant if you have rebound slot keys for your weapons, the
numbers will work for radio lists / selectable menus like the Engy's
build menu rather than the weapons aswell!

Re: [hlds] UAC kicking in due to active-x controls in the MOTD

2008-06-23 Thread Tom Leighton
The web browser is simply a hosted Internet Explorer (Shdocvw.dll)
control, which is why it acts like IE, and is slow (It is rendered
offscreen and then copied to a texture and displayed)

Has any one tried the Application Compatibility Toolkit? Not sure if the

First download and install Application Compatibility Toolkit.
 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=24DA89E9-B581-47B0-B45E-492DD6DA2971displaylang=en
Find the shortcut icon for Compatibility Administrator. Right click it and
click Run as administrator. In the left hand pane, right-click on the
database under Custom Databases and select Create New, and select Application
Fix. Enter the name and other details of the application you want to alter
behavior on and then browse to it to select it. Click Next. Click Next until
you are in the Compatibility Fixes screen. On the Compatibility Fixes screen,
find the item RunAsInvoker, and check it. Click Next and then Finish. Select
File and Save As. Save the file as a app.SDB type file in a directory you
will easily find it. Navigate to Start Menu, Right click Command Prompt and
click Run as administrator. Run the following command at the prompt : sdbinst
 path\app.sdb
Where path is the location where you have saved the app.sdb file. For
example, if you saved the .SDB file as app.sdb in the c:\Windows folder, the
 command should be like this:
 sdbinst c:\windows\app.sdb
You should now get a confirmatory message. Voila! You’re done, Vista will no
longer prompt you with the UAC everytime you open your favorite app.

people that complain about windows security. UAC is actually very helpful
against malware/viruses, and really after you install your software, there
is no reason to have it off. I hardly ever have to hit a continue on my
home machines (except if there is an update to the software). Now at work
its disabled because it severely slows me down having to hit continue

This does not disable any account/user stuff todo with file

I recently noticed that there are a few servers which
seem to haveactive-xcontrols in the MOTD. A nice

(Vista) and eventually leads to hl2.exe being stuck on 100% cpu.
Besides the obvious choice of not playing on those servers or
installing the addon manually (or not running vista ^^), is there
actually a way for end-users to avoid being asked to install an addon?
The servers that Isawdid not try to do anything
malicious, but just getting the popup or even crashing from the game is
 quite annoying. Thanks.

build a sentry anywhere near a corner because a pyro will be able to

Good job on taking out the falloff, Valve. Ubers are useless due to

 the

silly air-blast, sentries are useless, and god forbid that a class
that's not explosive can now juggle people in the air (and quite

The medic update wasn't gamebreaking because it didn't change any
extended elements of the game. This is just stupidity.

 Probably for the best.

Coldorak: I don't quite have my community site jigger (doublezen.net)
setup. But most of what i've posted have been exploit fixes that have
long since been patched, and a few *cough* antidelist things. If
you're looking for something interesting, check out:
 http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=72322

I actually have tomorrow slated as 'do a bunch of doublezen work' day.
 You're all invited =D

He's done *something* to his profile (since the last id is based on steamid

He removed his shortid (hence, cannot be found) and made his profile
private (hence, the second message). If there's no 'make private'
button it's possible that valve did it for him. At this point though,
 honestly, leave him be.

Most people only have the list address there. In Thunderbird, if I

Or get some more interesting cheat detection methods online.

I know it may up the amount of false positives, but I don't see how
logging the modules that are loaded during the games startup/random
intervals, and then comparing the amount of players using them.

If it's a legitimate program, valve can revert the bans, etc.

Not a good idea, but we could do with a more proactive approach to
anti-cheat (Maybe even screenshots? :P)

The big point about VAC being a delayed banning system is that the
people creating these hack programs can't be sure 100% that they won't
get caught by using whatever program they've created. If it was an
insta-ban system like Punkbuster, they could just play with it until
they were to get around the system, which would make the system
 virtually useless anyway.

Plus, we get to ban more people later! :D

just as well as I could - it's very different from actually fixing the
code behind it though. They do need to straighten their testing
process out a bit, but it's not like i'm doing anything on the scale
of what they have to do on their end to properly fix it, so cut them
 some slack.

sv_benchmark_force_start, when typed in the console by any player,
 crashes a server. Yay.

 This is a plugin:
 http://www.nephyrin.net/NephCVUH_1.0.zip

The plugin adds the 'ncp' command, which makes the selected cvar a CHEAT
so load up the plugin, and add to your server.cfg:

 ncp sv_benchmark_force_start

That should be it. Let me know if you have any problems.
