Hi, Sorry. I forgot that us_intl is 'old style' keymap. For such maps you need grp:*_switch options instead of lv3:*_switch. I.e. if you change lv3:lwin_switch to grp:lwin_switch you will get access to extra symbols of us_intl. OK, I did it, but it's almost a same story. I can get a larger number of extended Latin characters, but still no extra symbols available. I nee eurosign, (AltGr+5), copyright (AltGr+c), French quotation marks ( , respectively AltGr+[ and ]), german ss, superscript o, a, 1, 2, 3 and so on. I am not a maintainer of 'us_intl' map itself. It it differs from MS Windows Intl keymap it just means nobody complains of its incompleteness yet. You can write a bugreport on bugs.xfree86.org. I understand the problem better now, but I don't need all those characters and I miss some I use every day. Now I need to insert a special symbol every time I want to put a price in euros, i.e. dozens times per day. Not very convenient. I suggested you to update the xkb stuff from CVS. At least EuroSign presents in the current version (it was added after 4.3.0 release). Because of all those problems with Compose rules, I think there should exist many XkbVariants for different national character assignments. For example, if I want to have my usual US international + Russian setup AND the possibility to use AltGr mode to have all non-Russian cyrillic characters as all Mac users do, I should have the possibility to edit my XF86Config-4 like this: Option XkbLayout us,ru Option XkbVariant (withdeadkeys+eurointernational),(winkeys+fullcyrillic) Option XkbOptions grp:alt_shift_toggle,lv3_AltGr,compose:menu Yes. If you (or someone else) think some variant of any existent layout would be useful you can make a report. Even if you have not enough skills to make a patch you can write some description where and what symbols should be added to an existent keymap. BTW I made a 'multi_layout compatible' variant of us_intl map but, of course, it is not more complete than the map you have currently. -- Ivan U. It's complicated. First, AltGr only exists on the keyboard, not in the
software. For Linux, there are two totally different keyboard mechanisms:
console and XFree86's XKB. We're talking just about XKB here. The four sets
of modifiers we're talking about are the deadkeys (dead_cedilla, et al.),
Multi_key, ISO_Level3_Shift and Mode_switch.
deadkeys are symbols that don't generate a glyph by themselves, but affect the
glyph printed when the next key is pressed. If you have a dead_cedilla key,
you would first press and release the dead_cedilla, then press the 'c' key.
This will print ç. There are lots of different dead_* keys.
Multi_key is also known as Compose. After pressing and releasing the
Multi_key, sequentially press the two keys that you want combined into one
glyph. So press and release Multi_key, then press and release ',' then 'c' to
get ç. Pressing 'c' then ',' also works.
ISO_Level3_Shift and Mode_switch have been confused in X's history. In XFree86
4.3, the new pc/ directory uses ISO_Level3_Shift, which is the right way.
You can see the difference in the symbol files.
The ISO_Level3_Shift way looks like this:
key AE01 { [ ampersand, 1, onesuperior, exclamdown ] };
and the Mode_switch looks like this:
key AE01 {[ ampersand, 1 ],
[ onesuperior, exclamdown ] };
The problem with using the Mode_switch way like this is that it is very
difficult to mix two keymaps (say, a US keyboard for Latin script and a
Russian keyboard for Cyrillic).
If I have us_intl keyboard alone, I normally should have deal keys
working without any Compose key. If I have one I use Compose + +a to
get ä, but even without I should be able to get ä using only +a. And
AltGr mode should be used to have even more characters.
If you want dead keys to type ä with the us_intl keymap (which uses the old
Mode_switch method), you have to generate a dead_diaeresis symbol. In the
us_intl map, that is the shifted second group on the semi-colon/colon key. Or
it is also the shifted first group of the apostrophe/doublequote key. So, to
get a dead_diaeresis, you can either press Shift+apostrophe/doublequote
together, or press Mode_switch+semi-colon/colon together.
Otherwise, using Multi_key, you can get the behavior that you describe for
Composing.
However, the AltGr key can be mapped to either Mode_switch or Multi_key, so
the behavior to the user might appear the same.

Hi, OK, I configured as follows: us_intl lv3:lwin_switch,compose:menu So, I use only US_intl Dead keys work, but we still have the problem with c cedilla. I must use Compose+,+c to get it. The problem is that even if I press Compose key I get often the plain vanilla ,. I need to carefully press Compose, wait a second, press , then c. On the other side, AltGr just doesn't work. I get the usual characters, not some extra. Impossible to get eurosign or something like this. Sorry. I forgot that us_intl is 'old style' keymap.
