UCAT allocation to CATALOG task

2011-08-21 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Does anyone on the list remember advice that a change occurred with z/OS 1.11
that might result in UCATs being allocated to the CATALOG task under z/OS 1.11
early on in IPL, when this almost certainly as not happening under z/OS 1.10?
We have been upgrading a 3-LPAR non-SYSPLEX system from z/OS 1.10 to 1.11, and
didn't have any problems with the first two, but in the last one ended up in a
VARY OFFLINE PENDING situation when a volume was varied offline.
The system is not a sysplex but does share several volumes across the LPARS.
A F CATALOG,UNALLOCATE(catname) command did unallocate the catalog and the
allocation against the volume that we wanted t take offline.

SMF EXITS in effect - which are they?

2011-03-31 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Does anyone know a way to determine exactly which exits SMF is taking? D
SMF,O shows which exits are supposed to be being taken, but we have a
disagreement as to what happens when there is a SYS list, and a SUBSYS
TSO list that is different. My reading of the manual is that whatever is in SYS
is in effect unless changed by a SUBSYS override. The alternative view is that
as soon as you specify SUBSYS TSO you override all the SYS settings and
only what is listed takes effect - plus the internal defaults.
The answer to this can't be determined from D SMF,O as it only lists the input,
not the resulting set up.

ALPHACON Macro for EZYTRIEVE

Has anyone on the list heard of a macro called ALPHACON? It is apparently
something that can be used either with EZYTRIEVE itself or with the IBM

LINKLIST and PDSEs that expand

2010-10-28 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Readers of this list will be well aware that if a PDS is allowed to take
extents,
and does, modules in the additional area may not be able to be fetched
because the DEB chain hasn't been updated.

Is the same true of a PDSE? The method of fetching a module is different from
a PDSE so this problem may not exist. I am not advocating that PDSE data
sets in the LINKLIST be allocated with the ability to take extents as a matter
of course, I am just seeking advice as to whether anyone has had this
situtation, and what happened. If it is no longer a problem, it may provide a
way out of certain problems from time to time.

New zEnterprise 196 Hardware

2010-07-23 Thread Anthony Fletcher
I heard an informal comment that the zEnterprise was going to be the most
significant announcement since the 360. Wasn't the highest model in the
360/370 range the 195?

Maybe z196 is a logical continuation of that?

Anyway of the 1 means first, does that mean the next model will be a z296, or
will it have more cores so have to use Hex numbers as someone has
suggested so that it can be the z2xx.

Enough! Time to go back to work.

How to find the OMVS UID in use

I have a problem on a system (ACF2 based) where some users are unable to
use the OMVS command, for example, properly from TSO. The message

easy way to find the UID that a user ends up with when logged on. I can

COUPLE DATA SET TIME STAMPS

2010-04-15 Thread Anthony Fletcher
We have a system that we have been running on its own machine with the
clock set to the local time (not GMT and before GMT). We need to move to a
machine that is running in GMT mode with an appropriate offset. All that is
easy.

However when we tried to test this we ran into a problem with the XCF data
set's time stamp because it is apparently using the H/W clock rather than an
offset and by switching the H/W to GMT the apparent machine time is going
backward.

OK, so that is easy to fix by making a new empty XCF CDS set since we will
restart the whole SYSPLEX.

We also have LOGR and WLM CDS data sets, and making new versions of
these is not so easy.

Can anyone reliably advise whether the LOGR and WLM data sets have the
same sort of time checks as the XCF ones do, or can we expect them to
happily accommodate the clock going backwards.

LLA and FREEZE status

2009-12-17 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Is there any way of finding out whether LLA was started in FREEZE mode? If
the intent is to use FREEZE mode, specifications can be put in a PARMLIB
member , eg as CSVLLATT, then if the command START LLA,LLA=TT is issued
(ie without the SUB=MSTR), the system automatically reissues the command
as START LLA,SUB=MSTR, but doesn't add the LLA=TT. That means that LLA
starts but it will not be using the CSVLLATT member, and will not be using
FREEZE. Is there a way to display the actual LLA status?

DWDM and IPL question

2009-10-19 Thread Anthony Fletcher
At one stage we had the following scenario (simplified)
Device 1 2105-F20 - Escon CHPID 01 - Address Range 1000
Device 2 2105-F20 - Escon CHPID 02 - Address Range 2000
Both were connected to a processor with one difference, device 2 was
connected through a DWDM link.
The two devices were decommissioned and in the course of that the CHPIDs
were configed off at the processor, but the cables were left plugged in.
We then had an unplanned POR.
At IPL we had timeout errors on CHPID 02 then messages requiring
confirmation that the IPL should continue without the devices, one by one in
Address range 2000.
We had no such messages in relation to CHPID 01 and Address Range 1000.
This appears to indicate that even though there is nothing attached on the
DWDM link some status is being returned that is different.
Has anyone had this experience, and what is that status that is coming back?

HSM AUTH DATABASEAUTHORITY

2009-08-06 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Does anyone know whether there is a way to delete old HSM AUTH records from
the HSM data sets. Removing the AUTH userid DBA(CONTROL) command from
ARCCMDxx stops them being added, but they are still saved somewhere until
deleted with the AUTH userid REVOKE command.
Since HSM started using RACF facility resources, any use of the AUTH command
results in message ARC0180I user AUTHORIZATION IS NOT CHANGED.

This means if the HLIST USER command is issued, a list of userids is
returned that is not the effective list. The list is preceeded by the
message ARC1700I DFSMSHSM COMMANDS ARE RACF PROTECTED but it is not clear
that the list provided is ineffective.

GRS RESMIL SETTING

2008-03-04 Thread Anthony Fletcher
We have a GRS environment using XCF (ie not using a CF) with three LPARS
connected. We had changed the RESMIL value to OFF to try and improve
responsiveness. That worked, but the XCFAS address space CPU consumption
went up. We decided to change the RESMIL value to 0 since that does leave
the tuning mechanism working. The manual indicates that RESMIL can be
changed on any LPAR independent of the others. One LPAR was changed, leaving
the other two set to OFF. It looks as if changingthe RESMIL value to 0 in
one LPAR has reduced the CPU consumption in the XCFAS address space in all
LPARS.
Question is: Is that to be expected, or do we need to look for something else?

Re: GRS RESMIL SETTING

From what I remember, RESMIL 0 should adapt and be self-tuning. I think
that the last time I used it we set it to RESMIL of 3. At the time, we
were a bit distrustful of letting the system determine how things should
be done. The whole thing worked pretty well up until we started adding
more systems. I think when we got up to 6 systems the ring started
getting a little more sluggish.. at which time GRS-STAR solved the issue.

z/OS 1.9 VSAM RLS DUMP enhancements

2008-02-21 Thread Anthony Fletcher
In z/OS 1.9, RLS was enhanced to cause better documentation when an error
occurs. This is by additional system dumps in a SYSPLEX so that they occur
in other members of a shared environment. The migration manual warns that
additional dump space may be required.
Has anyone had practical experience of this - eg are the dumps any larger,
or is it just that there are additional SYSDUMPS produced (and therefore
require more DASD because of the additional number of dumps)?

GRSCNF RESMIL setting - OFF versus 0

2008-02-03 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Have been looking at apparent increased XCFAS CPU use after setting RESMIL
OFF. Investigation shows that RESMIL OFF and RESMIL 0 are not the same and
that OFF may not be a good setting.
D GRS shows RESMIL OFF. SHOWZOS shows RESMIL(0).
Question - is this due to SHOWZOS interpreting OFF the same as 0 or is it
picking up an internal value of 0 that GRS has set and that may be useful
information about what is actually going on?

Re: IEBGENER is BROKEN

2008-01-14 Thread Anthony Fletcher
If you use IEBGENER in straight copy mode, it does check and enforce that
the LRECLs match. That is what happens if you use SYSIN DD DUMMY
If you want to change the LRECL use the SYSIN statement to put in IEBGENER
control statements to do what you want.

Steve, are you really concerned about a 24-year-old APAR?

SNIP

I'm concerned that someone doesn't understand variable records. I'm
concerned that someone would break GENER because some customer doesn't
understand variable records and must be large enough that IBM would
actually listen.

I just about choked when I read that APAR that I was pointed to by a
support person as to why this behavior.

Be very scared, because these are the people that now do I/O for MVS.

IDCAMS REPRO ABEND

2008-01-08 Thread Anthony Fletcher
In z/OS 1.4 (and maybe prior) IDCAMS REPRO would abend the job step when an
Abend was detected (eg B37, D37 913). In z/OS 1.7 it reports a problem with
a message and return code 12. This is the way IDCAMS needs to operate for
the Modal/functional commands to be able to work together. Does anyone know
when or how the operation was corrected to issue the message and RC rather
than abort the job step completely?

zFS Recovery via APAR OA22351

2007-12-20 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Apar OA22351 introduces an option to allow zFS to temporarily remount a R/O
file as R/W so that it can rerun the zFS log. Normally a R/O file does not
change, but if it is mounted R/W for maintenance, for example, and is not
properly closed down, it may not be able to be mounted R/O and has to be
remounted R/W to do the recovery. OA22351 allows this remount to be dynamic
and automatic so saving an IPL to fix the problem.
My question is why the default for this option if NO and not YES, and, for
that matter why would you ever not want the recovery to happen automatically?

ISPF 3.4 ENQBYPASS

2007-11-22 Thread Anthony Fletcher
I am working on an account which gives me the ability to rename a data set
from ISPF 3.4 if it is ENQd in another LPAR in the same GRSPLEX. Does anyone
know whether this is as a result of an IBM feature (eg SAF call) or whether
it is provided by some add-on code? If it is an IBM resource anyone know
what the RACF resource name is (or the ACF/2 equivalent).

IEAOPTxx options in use

2007-06-15 Thread Anthony Fletcher
According to the Initialisation and Tuning Reference, from z/OS 1.3 most
IEAOPTxx options are ignored. It also says that if an option is found in
IEAOPTxx that is no longer used it is just ignored. It then lists quite a
long list of options that are presumably recognised and used.
Is there any display or module that will show which IEAOPTxx contents have
been accepted?
This question arises because I am working in a z/OS 1.4 system that is being
prepared for upgrade for z/OS 1.7 first part of which is to switch to z/ARCH
mode. My inclination is to empty IEAOPTxx so that the z/OS 1.4 defaults,
whatever they are will automatically switch to the 1.4 z/ARCH values, then
to the z/OS 1.7 values.
Any comments please?

Re: PDS86 missing output with LIST subcommand

2007-06-13 Thread Anthony Fletcher
John
I have not sent you my LIST and MAP output because I have seen postings
from yourself and others that indicate that the problem is not unique to
our site and that it is related to the presence of zero length CSECTS
(whatever they are there for).
One piece of information that has not been reported in other posts is that

in some load modules the listing stops dead on encountering a zero length
CSECT, but in others the listing resumes at some point further into the
module. I have had a quick look at the code, expecting to find a classic
'reduce by 1 and result in a large number of FFs in a register or
field)' but I could not find anything likely.

The fact that the contents of the CSECT can be found by specifically
specifying it with the MODule operand has resolved my immediate concern.

PDS86 missing output with LIST subcommand

2007-06-07 Thread Anthony Fletcher
Has anyone experienced a problem with PDS86 leaving out a chunk of text from
a LOAD module?
I was looking in .SCEERUN(CEECCICS) to see what was in the CEEEXTAN CSECT. I
used the LIST subcommand, and because it is quite big, the '0' subcommand,
and did a FIND on CEEEXTAN. I didn't find it to my surprise. I went back out
and used the MAP command to see what offset CEEEXTAN was at, then went back
in to do LIST and list time paged down looking for the offset.
I was surprised to find the output had left out a whole lot of code from
X'3D50' and X'7A60'.
The data set is a PDS (not PDSE) and it is running on z/OS 1.7.

z/OS Health Check XCF exceptions

2007-05-01 Thread Anthony Fletcher
The z/OS 1.7 Health Checker is reporting two XCF settings to be corrected:
1. The recommendation to have two TRANSPORT classes with different message
lengths defined. How can suitable mesage lengths be defined?

2. The recommendation for the XCF_FDI (INTERVAL) is based on the SPIN
settings, and the calculated default is 85. The actual setting is 180 which
is there because of a common belief that at some stage IBM recommended the
value of 180 rather than letting the system default. Does anyone remember
this recommendation of 180 being made, and why, and/or whether there is a
more current recommendation, eg use the defaults that come with the system.

Thank you.
In the meantime could you please advise how CEEOCB flags the difference
between a value of NONE and an actual value - I presume that it is in
flags rather than in the actual data?

SHOWZOS

2007-04-22 Thread Anthony Fletcher
I have been using SHOWZOS 714 to try and sort out exactly what happens to LE
options under different circumstances. SHOWZOS has been very useful, but it
does not always seem to interpret the settings completelyl leading me to ask
whether the LE interpretation part is still WIP or whether is is deemed to
be finished.

What I have noticed so far is a setting of
STORAGE(00,NONE,00,8192)
is displayed by SHOWZOS 714 as
STORAGE(NONE,NONE,NONE,8192).
If I set it to
STORAGE(01,NONE,09,8192) for example, it does get displayed by as
STORAGE(01,NONE,09,8192)
leading to the conclusion that SHOWZOS is interpreting a value of 00 as
NONE. This does have ramifications as the IBM recommendation is to use NONE
and it is therefore not currently possible to use SHOWZOS to check whether
00 or NONE is being set.
I also set TERMTHDACT(MSG,CESE,96) but it displays as TERMTHDACT(MSG,,96)
