I utilized RMFWDM and did not find anything of importance; our MIH (Missing
Interrupt Handler) is set at
MIH DEV=(3E0-3E7),TIME=10:00
we attempted to cancel the job several times and finally forced it out of the
System; restored the database ran again and the job ran fine.
Created PMR 86917 Branch 370 to see if IBM can point me in a direction to
resolve this issue.

Running z/OS release 1.7.

Payroll jobs that creates checkpoint tapes on real STK 3490 tape drives.
Job will process fine to a selected point and stop.
There are no outstanding replies to indicate a problem exist.
We issue the Cancel command numerous times and the job does not cancel;
therefore, we have to
Force Exit the job out of the System.
I have looked thru SYSLOG and cannot find any reason as to why the job stopped
processing or why the cancel command is not working. It does say Cancel
command accepted.

I remember seeing this once with MAXSORT from SyncSort. The only reason I
bring this up now is the reference to checkpoint datasets. As I recall, there
is
a way to cancel this described in the manuals. If this is not a MAXSORT app,
then ignore my rantings

The most common cause for CANCEL not working is something getting hung
up in task termination. As to what that might be we can only guess. If
you have a reproducible problem, then capture an SVC dump of the hung
address space and forward it to IBM for analysis. If it turns out to be
vendor code they will point you in the right direction.

Re: Checkpoint job stops processing: Cancel command not working

2008-05-17 Thread Bill Wilkie
The only time I remember seeing anything like this was when an I/o device would
lose an interrupt and hang but that was many years ago before IBM came up with
MIH. However, that being said the MIH timeout value for tapes is probably
pretty high, in the neighborhood of 15-20 minutes, so you would need to wait
that long to see if the I/O gets re-driven and a missing interrupt is your
problem. You could also try setting the MIH Timeout value for the tapes to a
minute or less and run it again. If that fixes it, I'd contact your tape vendor
to have the drive checked out or see if there is a micro-code fix for the
problem.

You can also do a D U,,,xxx,1 against the tape unit and see if you see the tape
is busy.

Another item to look at is the size of the chkpoint record in case it's small
enough to be considered noise. Not sure if that would cause that kind of
problem, just a another thought.
