Linda/Jim

The Crown and Greyhound... locally known as the Dog! Spent many a £ there in
the 1970s! Last visited about 20 years back. Don't know if it's still there
under that name though! Probably some fancy stupid name like 'The Ref and
Whistle'. Very famous resident in the area today is Lady Thatcher.

Dulwich always was the upmarket part of South (Sarf) London.

Sorry to the rest of you not quite Florida is it.

Cheers!

Hello Linda,
College rd... close to the Dulwich park and that pub at the entrance
hat I do not remember the name of.
In all honesty, all I can remember now is taking the #12 (LRT) all
he way to almost the very end of the line.
Did know people on Underhill rd. too. IIRC, I think me then GP had
is office off of Underhill rd.
My apologies ... have not been home for since the 80's.

Interesting article, with a funny subtitle

2011-03-04 Thread McKown, John
It's not about the mainframe, but usable by mainframers.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rational/library/manage-operationalrrequirements-for-production/index.html

But the title:

Manage operational requirements for production.
Four steps to ensure that Development and Operations teams agree on
nonfunctional requirements

"nonfunctional requirements"?? By disfunctional programmers? I get what they
are meaning. But the phraseology is amusing to this old man.

I'm qualified to retire - when I retire is dependent mostly upon my
health, but real estate, gas prices, how much I like working in the
new system, etc..There are variables within my health - for
instance, if I can't play golf, I won't need as much money.

All of the following (from the survey) demand that I can predict those
variables. I could throw dice to come up with an answer, I suppose.

Within 6 months.
6 months to a year
1 to 2 years away
3 to 5 years away
6 to 10 years away
More than 10 years away
I'm semi-retired, doing occasional consulting work
I am retired.

Unfortunately, the really important missing options are
"Already retired and no longer taking mainframe-related surveys"
and
"Dead"

(And no, I'm not trying to make a very tasteless joke. Not this
time.)

This survey will not show how much of the mainframe workforce
has already shrunk due to people completely moving out of the
field or (unfortunately) dying. I think that is a significant number of
those in the profession when people started publicly worrying
about the "greying" problem 10 years ago or so.

I think the results would be pretty questionable anyway.
Except for one pretty large poll:
If you are a Mainframe Programmer, Systems Programmer or
Designer... What is your age groups? - 1325 votes - closed
the most responses they've had was 206. They don't get much
participation. And if the current poll is any example, they don't
collect any demographic information. There is no way to tell if they
get reasonable cross-section of the community. (And I wouldn't know
how to tell anyway.)

Has anybody tried voting twice? I decided not to since there was

Re: Interesting article on the future of mainframe programming and support personnel

2009-09-16 Thread Ian
Several media articles came out after the CA Mainframe survey was released.

Networkworld put it this way: "Still all is by no means rosy in
mainframeland. Another recent study raised an ever-increasing issue –
retiring mainframers."

Several years ago I put poll's to see where we stand with retirements, and
what age the Mainframer's are.
Retirement poll : http://www.cicsworld.com/node/123
Age Poll : http://www.cicsworld.com/node/157

Though the polls are informal, I do not think things are as bad as they
portray it.

So to gauge the current state of affairs I put up another retirement poll.
It will be interesting to see how many people will really retire in the near
future.

Take a moment and participate in the poll: http://www.cicsworld.com/

MOVING APPS OFF MAINFRAME MAY HAVE UNINTENDED RESULTS
http://go.techtarget.com/r/8698904/6570353

Migrating applications off the mainframe may seem like a good idea,
with CPU consumption and cost savings benefits. But if the
application's data model isn't fully understood, these migrations can
become costly and may require your organization to invest in
additional computing resources.

In this column, mainframe expert Robert Crawford uses a hypothetical
capacity planning meeting to demonstrate the unintended negative
consequences that can come from migrating apps off the mainframe.

I'm seriously off-topic here, but the word 'schleppen' is actually a German
verb meaning to carry something extremely heavy. I have encountered the word
'schleppen' in English a number of times, always in the context of carrying
heavy things. And as the blasted things are so heavy, they're colloquially
refered to (in German) as Schlepptops or Schleppis. :-) I wouldn't know about
the partygoer, though

Re: Interesting article

2008-05-27 Thread Barbara Nitz
Gary,

this installation has been running on 'thin clients' (inaffectionately called
'toasters') for as long as I work here. Plays havoc on IBMs 'new face', as that
requires '.exe'-execution priviledges, which the toaster users don't have.

All the new and clickable applications that IBM is at such great pain to
deliver require authority to install them by user (not available on a thin
client), and the group maintaining the servers behind the thin clients is not
willing to support 'us' and the clickable stuff. So thank goodness we all have
our 'schleppi' (laptop) to install ourselves.

Interesting? IMHO, just another one of those bad management

z/OS and its predecessors have long been a strong (if not the
strongest) data base engine around. And they could and still
can run Java workload, of course, without zAAPs.

zAAPs and zIIPs are a pricing thing only. Full stop.
