Much larger is somewhat of an understatement, NJW's XMIT manager is
merely 1Mb. This is a 57Mb monster. Edgar Hoffman's RECV390, on the
CBT Tape site tops out at 39k (as in 39 kilo bytes)...

Also, the install takes over the .XMI and .XMIT extensions, without asking.

Despite being in Java, the utility seems to be Windows-centric, as per
installation notes in:

http://unxmit.sourceforge.net/installation.htm

(".exe", "NOTEPAD" (not even WORDPAD!?), etc.) Has anyone reading
this tried it on a non-Win system. I believe I'll write the really

Re: XMIT manager

2011-05-12 Thread Grimmette, John
Hi,

if you are really using the XMIT manager as documented in CBT, I would suggest
you are likely to hit problems. Certainly the moment you use an XMIT file
created from a PDSE XMIT manager will let you down.

We hit these problems too. However in Sourceforge there is a similar (if much
larger, written in JAVA) program UnXmit. We find this program a whole lot
better, AND the programmer is really helpful. Unfortunately the programmer of
XMIT manager no longer seems to support the program and z/OS has moved on! :-((

I must stress both these programs manage and extract from XMIT files created on
the mainframe. There are commercial programs that will allow you to update an
Xmit file. One of them (which we have not tried) is from
http://www.tachyonsoft.com/ Look under the Workbench section.

Krzysztof,
Why don't you use SDB?
I mean System Determined Blocksize - it is also multiplier of LRECL.
Is there any reason to use 3120 or any other non-optimal value?

-
Because the XMIT command sets the BLKSIZE internally. :-(

XMIT Manager does not update XMIT files; it can browse and extract,
but not write.

You need to distinguish "XMIT Manager" from "XMIT files". You don't
say what mainframe OS you are using (I'm not sure what "MVS format
files" are); if z/OS, then use the TSO XMIT command with the OUTDSN
keyword to create an XMIT dataset. If it's z/VM then you need the
SENDFILE or NETDATA commands. I don't know if other zArch OSs have
support for this format.

Re: XMIT manager

2011-04-28 Thread Barkow, Eileen
Thank you all for the info about xmit manager - it works beautifully and may
come in handy.

I do not know why there was a problem about it.

All I did was run the tso command:
XMIT x.userid da('MY.PDS') OUTDSN('FLAT.PDS')

Then I downloaded to the pc with ftp from cmd.exe:

cd xmit.dir
FTP MVS.IP.ADDR
bin
get 'FLAT.PDS' flat
bye

then with xmit manager, selected OPEN and pointed to directory where file
'flat' was located and boom -
all the pds members showed up and could be viewed.

 Thanks again

It isn't "XMIT software", it is a tool to view (ebcdic) XMIT format files
from the PC (which is an ascii environment).

There is a link to XMIT manager is on the CBT home page

The presumption is that you would upload the files to z/OS again at some
point to be used. XMIT manager is just a convenient way to be able to
read those TSO XMIT files on another platform.

So assuming you would ever want to use the files again (as opposed to just
being able to look at them on a PC), TSO XMIT is the way to go.

As far as documenting a special format, there is nothing special about EBCDIC
data, the problem here is a difference in platforms.

Simple perhaps, but has some issues:

1) ASCII translation for "readable" members

2) Won't work for loadlib / compiled rexx etc.

Besides, the OP said he wishes to open the file with XMIT manager,
which means he needs the output of TSO XMIT.

Review the TSO TRANSMIT (or XMIT) command. Then determine the best method
for your setup to transfer from the mainframe to the PC (IND$FILE type
transfer in a 3270 emulator, FTP, ISPF WSA, and others)

Re: XMIT manager

2011-04-28 Thread Mark Zelden
Simple perhaps, but has some issues:

1) ASCII translation for "readable" members

2) Won't work for loadlib / compiled rexx etc.

Besides, the OP said he wishes to open the file with XMIT manager,
which means he needs the output of TSO XMIT.

No, it is _not_ used in deployment; I simply use XMIT files for
deployment, and they have worked fine over the years.

I sometimes use XMITMGR to check out the contents of one of

I am _not_ dependent on Windows for deployment.

Subject: XMIT manager problem

When I package support files for course labs, I have
for many years used XMIT, then download as binary to
my workstation. Over the years Xmit manager has been
a valuable tool to examine such files.

Today I wanted to look at member in a PDS in XMIT
format and Xmit manager gives these messages:

---
An error has occurred while decoding the xmit file!
            Error while decoding
            Member directory blocks

and the Details:

End of directory block should contain 12 binary zeros

Information obtained at the point of error:
Current xmit record length is 255 bytes
Current xmit record type is x00
Current file offset is 3720
  Xmit File size is 572400

Use the Debug option to provide a  format dump of the xmit file for
further
diagnosis.
--

The Debug option didn't help me.

I repeated the process, just to make sure everything
was correct, but got the same error sequence.

The XMIT file is good (a RECEIVE unpacks the file just fine).

I also tried opening some other files in using Xmit manager
and they opened fine.

Any suggestions?

Re: XMIT MANAGER

2010-05-08 Thread Scott T. Harder
Right... it was my question/OP about running XMIT Manager on Win7 (64 bit).
What I did (at the instruction of another kind list member) was to set up
Windows XP Mode in MS Virtual PC. I installed the 32 bit version of XMIT
Manager there and it worked gr8. The version of Windows that you are
running on the host determines whether you have MS Virtual PC available
without additional fees, I believe.

Re: XMIT MANAGER

you don't need a 32bit OS to run Xmit Manager, just to install it with the
current setup package. I'm building a new setup package for it that will
handle installation under 32bit or 64bit and it should be ready as soon as I
finish reading the directions for NSIS.

Let me know if you need a copy of the directory and I can email it to you.

I will go ahead and wrap a installation around the directory. I know that
there are several freeware builders to do that. I tried to get permission
from the original author, but never heard back, so I'll just move forward
and if they complain I'll remove it from the files section at that time.

I should have it there in a day or two.

Re: XMIT MANAGER

2010-05-06 Thread Longnecker, Dennis
I had this exact same problem. Adjusting the run/compatibility settings
wouldn't work.

The easiest thing to do is find some computer that is running a non-64 bit
version of windows. Install the product and then copy the directory that was
created to your 64 bit computer.

It appears just the installer has problems. Once you get it installed
somewhere, just copy it over. Works just fine on my Windows 7 64 bit computer.

Re: XMIT Manager

2010-03-18 Thread Shane Ginnane
Oh joy - Virtual PC. Last I looked at it, it was the worst of the virtualizers
available - by a long shot.
And (of course) this is only available on the "premium" Win7 versions.

Careful, or IBM might adopt this view of "compatability" in future. Don't
bother supporting all that
old stuff - just toss in a canned z/VM and an operating system. Set-and-forget.

Ah, nope ... maybe not - they already tried that with Linux, didn't they.

What I did was install the product on a XP machine, and then I just copied the
installation directory to my Windows 7 machine. Works fine.

Hi All,

Is there a version of XMIT Manager that will run on Windows 7??

I have v3 and it has not worked (won't install) since I went to Vista. Now
I'm on Win7 and, of course, have the same problem.

Thanks!

Under Win7 you can setup and run a WinXP Virtual Machine. A free XP
system image is available for download from Microsoft to run under Win7.
You should be able to install and run old software in the XP VM. I've
had to do that with a number of packages. It's a bit slow starting up
the VM but runs fine after that.

Tried that on the setup.exe file, but still get this in a pop-up when I
try
to run it:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows
you
are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether
you
need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, then
contact
the software publisher."

Just for grins, I also tried checking "run as Administrator" on
setup.exe
Properties under Compatibility, but got the same thing.

I am running Windows-7 64-bit, but other 32 bit software installs fine
into
"Program Files (x86)".

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I knew it was there, but hadn't
thought
of it. Very much appreciated.
