(z/OS.e 1.8) and we need to do some maintenance in programs only.

Yes, you can run COBOL program, and it's legal.
You cannot run COBOL compiler and it would be illegal.

This happened to me a while back. Intermittently I would see this from a
LISTCAT ENTRY(xx) command. The 448 is, I believe,the last three chars of
16448 which is X'4040'. It was looking to me as though there was some
corruption of R15 at the end of the command. The command executed normally
in my case and was followed by the message below.

Does your command execute, ie produce output? Does this happen on other

I know. And you can overwrite it with some highligting features to so the

Re: Threading

2012-11-08 Thread David Crayford
I don't know of any examples but I should imagine it's as simple of
starting POSIX C stub threads that call COBOL programs. If you want to
use shared data structures and use
mutexes or condvars in the COBOL programs then you will have to either
create COBOL records to map the DSECTS or write some assembler routines
to call the BPX services.

#pragma runopts(posix(on))

#define _UNIX03_THREADS

#include
#include
#include
#include

void COBPGM();

#pragma linkage(COBPGM,COBOL)

void * runThread( void * arg )
{
COBPGM(); // call the COBOL program
}

#define NUM_THREADS 5

int main( int argc, char * argv[] )
{
pthread_t threads[NUM_THREADS];

// start the threads
for ( int i = 0; i < NUM_THREADS; i++ )
{
pthread_create( &threads[i], NULL, runThread, NULL );
}

// wait for the threads to complete
for ( int i = 0; i < NUM_THREADS; i++ )
{
pthread_join( threads[i], NULL );
}

return 0;
}

Re: .netrc on zLinux - FTP to zos

2012-11-08 Thread John McKown
The .netrc that I am successfully using on my Fedora 18 (and back to
Fedora 15?) looked like:

machine  login  password  macdef init
sunique
runique
quote site noasa

The only real difference from yours is that I use "login" where you use
"userid". I also named my macro "init" so that the lines are
automatically send after a successful login. The name "init" is required
to do this. Lastly, I think you meant to type "quit" instead of "quite".
"quit" is quite different from "quite".

Another thing that I often do in scripts (with the above in .netrc) and
even occasionally from the Linux command line is transfer a single file
like:

echo -e "put /some/path/and/file.txt 'zos.output.file'\nquit" | \
ftp

or:

cd /output/path
echo -e "get some.file 'zos.input.file\nquit" | ftp

If you really want, you can even do multiple files:

echo "get 'zos.input.file1' output.file1.txt
bin
get 'zos.bin.file' output.file2.bin
quit" |\
ftp

Note that the above is formatted correctly in that each new ftp
subcommand in the Linux echo command is separated by a "hard" line
break. Since this is in a quoted string, the echo command outputs the
"hard" line break also. So the "ftp" command picks up each line properly
as a separate subcommand. I use double quotes to surround the data so
that I can use single quotes in the commands, as is sometimes required
to put in an unqualified (complete) DSN.

I created .netrc like this

It is my understanding on zlinux .netrc I merely say ftp mymachine.comp.com and
it should connect and login with the userid and password in the .netrc file

It sounds like you are referring to Control Unit Port (CUP). I believe it is
an optional switch feature these days. Do you intend to use the port for

Answering your first question should then answer your other two.

That would be fine, if I had access to an HMC. I don't, which is why I'm
asking if there are any IBM manuals that have such screen shots. The various
HMC Operations Guides don't, at least not of the screens I'm interested in.

Mark is of course entirely correct that 2^31 - 1 = decimal 2147483647
= x'7' is the highest available AMODE(31) address.

The substance of my post is also correct: decimal or binary -1 =
x'', and its value interpreted as an unsigned decimal integer
is 4294967295. Moreover, this decimal value is that of the largest
unsigned binary integer representable in four bytes.

I should, however, have taken greater care to avoid being
misunderstood in saying these things. Notional corrections that are
themselves ambiguous don't help things at all.

Peter,

Some nit-picking follows.  You wrote

| the area (sic) starting just above ECSA and always
| ending at 2GB ((-1, or X'7FFF').

which is not quite right. Viewed as a twos-complement signed fullword the value

x'7FFF'

is decimal +2147483647.

The value of -1 expressed in the hexadecimal for a twos-complement
binary fullword is then

x''.

Viewed instead as an unsigned storage address it is decimal

4294967295

i.e., 2^32 - 1, instead; and this last value is of course the highest
four-byte storage address available.

This happened to me a while back. Intermittently I would see this from a
LISTCAT ENTRY(xx) command. The 448 is, I believe,the last three chars of
16448 which is X'4040'. It was looking to me as though there was some

I know. And you can overwrite it with some highligting features to so the

There must be an issue with your cut and paste.

Could you please post all messages from last command thru command with error?
Please do not edit.

Note: Review ALL messages in your output for the IDCAMS function step. The
error could have occurred much earlier in your listing. Since you did not post
the entire listing, I do not know where that error might be.

IDC3003I is a general message. So look through the output from the entire
IDCAMS step. See if there is a WAS xx which is NOT zero.

If you have JES2/SDSF then SE the output. You can then X ALL; F ' CONDITION
CODE IS ' ALL; x ' 0 ' all

This may show you the errors.

On a related subject...

I found the PTCBADDR=PSATOLD option for the IEAMSCHD macro and think it might
help. But it requires the PURGESTOKEN= parameter and per the manual:

,PURGESTOKEN=purgestoken Specifies the space token of an address space to be
associated with this SRB routine. During memory termination, all SRB routines
that are scheduled into the address space and have not received control are
purged and control will be given to each SRB routine’s RMTR. The address space
represented by the purgestoken does not have to be the same as the address
space where the SRB routine will be dispatched.

The only trouble is I have been through the books and searched the web but have
not found out how to find the address space token for my address space (that
was created by the system).

You may want to get some better advise than just using my REXX code in

True. Not just anybody can do those commands. I just don't know if the command
itself would show up in any "log". RACF might well record the security event
for requesting access to the proper profile. But that may not include the
filesystem name in it.

I wonder if z/OS UNIX has a tendency that I've seen in Linux. If I get a
filesystem corruption, the filesystem automatically switches to READ-ONLY mode.

Don't the terms "user private storage" and "extended user private

That depends on the rule being broken. For issuing an SVC, it's an
ABEND.

CBT tape.

S0C1 is an ABEND code, not a program check. What happens with a
program check depends on the specific interrupt code. For those
leading to an ABEND, the behavior depends on your recovery
environment; normally you will have, e.g., an FRR.

Actually I do that way and I cannot imagine any feature I the method lacks.

Re: Data Set Comparison Using Sort

2012-11-08 Thread Yifat Oren
Thanks Kolusu.

I was wondering if there's a way to terminate the matching process as soon
as it find the first unmatched record.

Your approach stops the read of the output file of the matching process
(after it tried to match each and every record - which is redundant - I only
wanted to know if the data sets were identical, and the first record, for
example, did not match and I could have just stopped there).

Hope I'm making myself clear.

Thanks again,
Yifat

Yifat,

With DFSORT, you can use STOPAFT=1 on the maintask instead of reading all
the joined/unpaired records.

Sample control cards

//STEP0100 EXEC PGM=SORT
//SYSOUT   DD SYSOUT=*
//INA  DD DISP=SHR,DSN=Your Input File1
//INB  DD DISP=SHR,DSN=Your Input File2
//SORTOUT  DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSINDD *
  JOINKEYS F1=INA,FIELDS=(1,5,A)
  JOINKEYS F2=INB,FIELDS=(1,5,A)
  JOIN UNPAIRED,F1,ONLY
  OPTION COPY,STOPAFT=1
//*

Thanks,

Why not generate your own showing your actual screens. The PRINT button works

i.e., the region, if it's a job, but it's >never explicitly defined as
such. I think this is the "Extended Region (ERGN)" on the drawing in the
link above. Correct?

I understand the "extended user private storage" to be the area the area
starting just above ECSA and always ending at 2GB (-1, or X'7FFF').

This area contains the "extended region" growing up from low addresses
and the "extended local system queue area (ELSQA)" growing down from
X'7FFF'. The "extended region (ERGN)" value is the limit in the
"extended user private area" that can be used for non-ELSQA subpool
storage, i.e. this is the topmost address (-1) for this kind of storage.
The limit for the LSQA is not fix; it can grow (downwards) until it hits
the topmost allocated area of "non-ELSQA subpool storage".

ERGN is the result from JCL REGION and IEFUSI processing.

>2) Definition of "user private storage". Correspondingly, I think
this means "memory below the line in the private (local) address space",
i.e., in the region; "Region >(RGN)" on the drawing.

Similar to the extended user area. Difference being that the area starts
above the "system region", i.e. it does not start a address 0, and it
ends just below CSA. again, non-LSQA storage is allocated bottom up and
LSQA storage is allocated top down.

Why do we need to define the switch device and the switch control unit?

2012-11-08 Thread ibmnews

Hi all

 When we define FICON switch itself,why do we need to define the switch
device and the switch control unit?

what is its advangtage of the CU and device?

 If two sysplex share this switch,must this switch be assigned to two sysplex?

Thanks a lot!
