I guess this is a pure z/OS Admin Beginner Question…. As Nathan suggested, HCD lets you specify whether volumes should be online or offline after IPL. The logic is backward for reasons lost in the mists of time (and which predate HCD); so, to have the volumes be online after IPL, you must set OFFLINE to NO. The VATLST (Volume ATtribute LiST) is used to specify how online volumes are used. It does not let you change whether they are online or offline at IPL time. Attributes are defined in z/OS MVS Initialization Tuning. COMMNDxx and IEACMDxx (read about which to use when in z/OS MVS Init Tuning Guide and/or Reference) are used to issue commands automatically. The commands, though issued early, are scheduled asynchronously. So if the volumes must be online very early, command completion might not be timely and HCD could be your only real alternative. Re: SORT one input to 3 output files - different orders
Bill, The trick is to concatenate the master file 3 times but have a header file to distinguish the file and put the key values to be sorted at a common place. (usually at the end) So the largest sort key is from file 2 which has 9 + 8 = 17 bytes and the smallest sort key is from file3 which has just 8 bytes. So we pad spaces to the right for key3. So depending on how you want to results you may want to left pad with high values or binary zeroes. Try the following JCL //** //* CREATE A 90 BYTE HEADER TO USE AS AN IDENTIFIER * //** //STEP0100 EXEC PGM=SORT //SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=* //SORTIN DD * //SORTOUT DD DSN=HDR,DISP=(,PASS),SPACE=(CYL,(1,1),RLSE) //SYSINDD * OPTION COPY OUTFIL REMOVECC,NODETAIL,BUILD=(90X),HEADER1=(3'$') //* //** //* CONCATENATE THE MASTER FILE 3 TIMES EACH WITH A HEADER FILE AND * //* PUT THE KEY AT A COMMON PLACE SO THAT WE CAN SORT IN 1 PASS. * //** //* FILE INDICATOR WILL BE AT POSITION 91 * //** //* FILE1 - SORT CHAR 10-15 AND THEN 40-47 WILL BE AT POSITION 92* //* FILE2 - SORT CHAR 73-81 AND THEN 40-47 WILL BE AT POSITION 92* //* FILE3 - SORT CHAR 40-47WILL BE AT POSITION 92* //** //STEP0200 EXEC PGM=SORT //SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=* //SORTIN DD DISP=SHR,DSN=HDR,VOL=REF=*.STEP0100.SORTOUT // DD DISP=SHR,DSN=Your.Master.File // DD DISP=SHR,DSN=HDR,VOL=REF=*.STEP0100.SORTOUT // DD DISP=SHR,DSN=Your.Master.File // DD DISP=SHR,DSN=HDR,VOL=REF=*.STEP0100.SORTOUT // DD DISP=SHR,DSN=Your.Master.File //OUT1 DD SYSOUT=* //OUT2 DD SYSOUT=* //OUT3 DD SYSOUT=* //SYSINDD * INREC IFTHEN=(WHEN=GROUP,BEGIN=(1,3,CH,EQ,C'$$$'),PUSH=(91:ID=1)), IFTHEN=(WHEN=(91,1,ZD,EQ,1),OVERLAY=(92:10,6,40,8)), IFTHEN=(WHEN=(91,1,ZD,EQ,2),OVERLAY=(92:73,9,40,8)), IFTHEN=(WHEN=(91,1,ZD,EQ,3),OVERLAY=(92:40,8)) SORT FIELDS=(91,18,CH,A)$ FILE-ID + COMPOSITE KEY SUM FIELDS=NONE OUTFIL FNAMES=OUT1,BUILD=(1,90), INCLUDE=(91,1,ZD,EQ,1,AND,1,3,CH,NE,C'$$$') OUTFIL FNAMES=OUT2,BUILD=(1,90), INCLUDE=(91,1,ZD,EQ,2,AND,1,3,CH,NE,C'$$$') OUTFIL FNAMES=OUT3,BUILD=(1,90), INCLUDE=(91,1,ZD,EQ,3,AND,1,3,CH,NE,C'$$$') //* Sri Hari Kolusu DFSORT Development IBM Corporation Email: skol...@us.ibm.com Phone: 520-799-2237 Tie Line: 321-2237 IBM Mainframe Discussion List IBM-MAIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU wrote on 08/03/2015 01:29:54 PM: From: Bill Ashton bill00ash...@gmail.com To: IBM-MAIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU Date: 08/03/2015 01:30 PM Subject: Re: SORT one input to 3 output files - different orders Sent by: IBM Mainframe Discussion List IBM-MAIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU Hi Kolusu...yes, all the master files and the trans files are 90 bytes FB. Thanks Ron T I'm a bit unclear about what you mean by ... without being converted to a .CSV file. Do you mean that you want to directly transfer the actual .xlsx (or .xls) file into a member of a PDS without any intermediate file on the sending side? I don't know of an FTP client which can do that. Disclaimer: I am not knowledgeable about either option. And I'm a Linux person, not a Windows person. My first thought is, assuming this is on Windows, is to write a PowerShell which runs a program, say in .NET, to access the data in the Excel spreadsheet, have it create a CVS export, then ftp that. Now, depending on what you can do on the sending side, there are Python libraries which can read an Excel spreadsheet, http://www.python-excel.org/. Or you can set you the Excel spreadsheet to be an ODBC source and read it in Python using https://wiki.python.org/moin/ODBC . Also, there is an ftp package for Python as well ( https://docs.python.org/2/library/ftplib.html and https://docs.python.org/3/library/ftplib.html). This solution would require a bit of glue logic in Python to do. Likewise, there are similar libraries in the R language. But R is a bit more specialized and so would, IMO, take a person who does not have any knowledge of either language to learn R rather than Python. Also, there are more examples on the Web in Python to use as a starting point. I am assuming that you are on Windows. You can get Python for Windows here: https://www.python.org/downloads/windows/ There is also a version of Python for Mac and one for Linux. The R language for Windows can be gotten here: https://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/base/ You'll also need the openxlsx (or XLConnect) and RCurl packages from: https://cran.r-project.org/. Or, like with Python, you could use ODBC in R using RODBC from the above site. Curiosity: Why no .CSV file? I am guessing that you have an end user updating some Excel spreadsheet and you don't want them to have to save it as CSV. In which case, perhaps the PowerShell approach is best. If you really don't have the disk space for the CSV, then I guess the Python or R solution would be, at least, decent. -- Schrodinger's backup: The condition of any backup is unknown until a restore is attempted. Re: Exporting Excel to Dataset
We have a requirement that looks for exporting an Excel template with data in a tabular format from an FTP folder location to a mainframe PDS which later needs to be accessed via COBOL for some business processing logic. We know that this works fine if the input Excel file is in .CSV format. What we are looking for is, if anyone is aware of any such functionalities where we can accept and export the Excel template as such to a PDS that is readable by COBOL without being converted to a .CSV file? If you have MS SQL Server at your installation, your MSSQL DBA's should be able to develop a SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) application to transform your Excel worksheet into an XML file, which could then be FTP'ed to the mainframe PDS. You could then write COBOL application programs to do the XML PARSE to extract the information you need for your business logic. You may also be able to do something similar with MS Access. Exporting Excel to Dataset
Re: Exporting Excel to Dataset
I think that the open document format for spreadsheet files (*.ods) is an XML file in reality, you might want to investigate converting the Excel template to that format first. Excel since the 2007 version can save files in that format, using SaveAs. Re: Exporting Excel to Dataset
Several years ago, I developed an API which allows COBOL, ASM, etc. to read and write native excel files. To read, the unmodified Excel files is binary uploaded to sequential file or PDS member. JCL allocates sequential file or PDS member via JCL. COBOL program accesses sequential file or PDS member via API. Let me know if you are interested in additional details. What we are looking for is, if anyone is aware of any such functionalities where we can accept and export the Excel template as such to a PDS that is readable by COBOL without being converted to a .CSV file? Hi Michael, Having added several volumes to various pre-z/OS 2.1 release of the ADCD without hitting the problem you have mentioned it might be worth posting you devmap entry from what would logically be zos21.prof (z/OS 1.13 has zos113s.prof which is how I derived the name.) It may be something in here which is inhibiting initial online status, although I defer to the IODF comments made by more knowledge folk than I in that area. As others have said if you wish to automate the change to online then including a VARY command in COMMNDnn would be prefereable to IEACMDnn which conventionally is reserved for IBM issued commands. SORT one input to 3 output files - different orders
Good afternoon, friends! I thought this should be easy, but I can't get started with this. I have one transaction file that I need to add to 3 different master files. The master files are in 3 different sequences, so I can't just sort the trans file and MOD it to the end. Also, because I don't know which day of this week the file will come in, I need to run this every day, and so need to also drop my duplicate entries, as I know the trans file is unique. Can this be done in a single sort step? For the sake of argument, assume these sorts: File1 - sort Char data in cols 10-15 File2 - sort Char data in cols 73-81 File3 - sort Char data in cols 40-47 Each file, when master trans are combined, will all have the same data, just in different order. Thanks for directing me! AW: Volume is offline after IPL (ADCD beginner question)
Thank you all for your replies I guess I've got it ;) Well when I stared adding my own volumes my intention was to use device addresses that are far away from the addresses of the IBM supplied volume (so my volumes will probably never conflict/use addresses that will be used by IBM supplied volumes). So I've thrown an eye into the HCD and found a device address range for 16 devices, starting at address AF0. Well... the Online/Offline switch was completely new to me so I've not payed attention to this parameter. And yes, I took the wrong address range :-( AF0,16 is configured to be completely offline at startup. I use addresses starting at AD0 now and everything is working like a charm Thank you guys! It may be something in here which is inhibiting initial online status, although I defer to the IODF comments made by more knowledge folk than I in that area. As others have said if you wish to automate the change to online then including a VARY command in COMMNDnn would be prefereable to IEACMDnn which conventionally is reserved for IBM issued commands. Re: SORT one input to 3 output files - different orders
ICETOOL (as well as the other vendors products) support multiple sorts and merges in a single jobstep.
