Re: MTL question

2016-06-09 Thread John Benik
OK Lizette I'll try to explain this as best I can. Our current config consists
of a total of 3 DLMs. One has 6 vtes, another has four vtes, and yet another
has 2 vtes. Our new configuration will be 4 DLMs total. One DLM will be for
HSM only and consist of four VTEs(Non SMS). Another DLM will be for our tech
lpars this one will be mixed between both non sms and sms managed tape. and
only consist of 1 vte. Our last one will consist of two dlms with 5 vtes each.
This one will be SMS managed and also be defined as two MTLs per subsystem(I
believe for a total of four MTLs). But this has not been defined for sure yet.
As we just start nailing down the plans.

I am not clear on your configuration.

So, could you tell us
1) What hardware vendor and hardware type you will be using? For example IBM
TS7740?
2) How many tape drives do you currently have defined?
3) How many tape drives do you need for now and future growth?
4) Will you be replicating or similar process the Tape files?
5) Do you want to use SMS Managed tape or remain as non SMS managed tape?
a) Do you currently have SMS set up in your environment for DISK?
6) Have you worked with your hardware vendor to determine how they suggest to
set up the MTL?

Any other details will be helpful.

Lizette

MTL question

2016-06-02 Thread John Benik
We are in the process of life cycling our current tape environment. Currently
we are not SMS managed tape and also not defined as an MTL. Our new
environment will be MTLs but there is some confusion on setting up the MTL. I
was under the impression that the 512 device limit was based on sysplex, and if
that is indeed the case then we would need to setup two MTLs. Others thought
it was not based on Sysplex at all and thought it was based on addresses in
which case we would need four MTLs defined can someone tell me if it based on
Sysplex or on addresses, or perhaps a combination of both?
