Well, yes, there is. And several years ago I'd have asked the very same
question.

However, we highly recommend using FIXCATs to identify the PTFs needed
for z14s. Reliance on manual PSP-based procedures seems to be the
proximate cause of about a zillion questions and issues that simply
would not arise for those who get the current 2-year HOLDDATA file and
let SMP/E tell you what's missing. (Get that file from the Enhanced
HOLDDATA website or by using RECEIVE ORDER, which always gives you the
2-year file.)

Becareful of asking IBM, as it may cost you a LOT of money. I wanted to ask the
IBMer who was installing our machine and he said that will cost you $25K, I
asked why, he said IBM needs a contract written and that means $$$.
Since then I found the same story, what used to be free is costing large bucks.
I would drop the IBM and ask someone here as they will do it for free and maybe
charge for shipping.

I would try the Integrated 3270 console. Hit ENTER to generate the
external interrupt, and that should be your IPL console.

Subject: Re: Standalone IPL ADRDSSU and Operating Systems Messages z14

In general for all IPL situations, HMC OpSysMsg is utilized during 'NIP' in two
situations:

1. The NIP program (loosely, the IPL time code) explicitly directs messages to
SYSCONS. We do that here for SAD; no 3270 devices are defined. It always works.
OTOH we have not written a standalone dump tape in years, so I can't say much
there.

2. All defined 3270 consoles are inaccessible. We use VCC to handle I/O to
emulated 3270. NIP messages are sent to IODF-defined NIP consoles if at least
one is accessible. But we've had cases of VCC FUBAR that is not detected by
NIP. NIP thinks he's talking to a console, but nobody is actually home. The
only way around this problem is to force the 3270 console chpids offline so
that NIP will redirect messages to SYSCONS. This is a rare PITA that also
always works.

The above statements are not dependent AFAIK on hardware level. Same is true
for z13 (our latest) and all earlier models in my experience. If you don't get
messages on SYSCONS, look at the standalone restore program definitions and at
the IOCDS.

Standalone IPL ADRDSSU and Operating Systems Messages z14

2017-11-03 Thread Crispin Hugo
I have used the tape many times on zBC12 but when I use it on Z14 , when I go
to Operating Systems Messages, I get
OSM0002 Messages Interface Unavailable.
I have tried this on HMC and SE and get the same.

I have trawled the manuals and I can't see what has changed or what needs to be
done.
As usual any suggestions Welcome

Starting with the z14, you don't need the SE to be able to connect to the FTP
server anymore. The SE will go thru an HMC to get to an FTP server. So, your
SE's can remain on a more isolated network but one of your HMC's adapters must
be on a network with connectivity to the FTP server.

This only works for z14 systems (z14 SE thru a z14 HMC).
