why don't Linux-delhi decide on some theme for meetings. take any theme like embedded linux or linux in web domain blah blah... and invite ppl to deliever talk on any topic covering that theme. i am sure lot of ppl will come out of their shells. atleast ppl with similar interest would like to know what is there or what more can be done. regards, Puneet - Original Message - From: vivek khurana [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Linux-Delhi mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2003 12:01 PM Subject: Re: [ilugd] linux-delhi threat HI! The meetings seem to lack direction n hence the poor attendence. definitely kishor, raj and all the senior members can do something to make them an interesting affair. Well, weel meetings lack directions and r boring only if u rely only on the senior ppl to come up with agenda. Hey, i atended the meeting this time for the first time, and no way it was boring, we all enjoyed it, (those who attended raise your hands) and what more we decided (tentative)the agenda and place for next meeting. Look, i belive this group does not belong to senior ppl only, we r all part of it nad we have to take responsibility and keep on rotating among ourselves, then only it will be fun. We have a larger goal of popularizing Linux and making most out of our Linu boxes that's why most of us joined this group (well if someone has other aim rest these two, please tell me). So, please ppl turn up at meetings, we have rationalised the process of, calling meetings so everyone will be informed in advance from next month onwards. I am not saying that every memeber should turn up in every meet, workers of Linux Delhi Society will come every month and rest can show up at least once in three months, even with this practice there will be good attendance. again, meetings can only be interesting affair only if we want them to be. hoping to see good attendance in next meet with regards Vivek = When DESTINY has closed all the DOORS; Jump out of the WINDOW __ Do you Yahoo!? [ilugd] Re: nfs rpc errors
have been having some similar problems myself. I stopped all the NFS related services (nfs + portmap, etc. ) and then started portmap before starting NFS. It seems to work most of the time, and the times it didn't, i restarted the boxes (both client and server) and then mounted the NFS share again (not using /etc/fstab). I encountered this when i was actually playing around with NFS and creating and removing shares indiscriminately, stopping and starting services erratically, etc. Couldn't find the real reason, i guess NFS is really sensitive to restarts and the order of restarts. Would be interested in case you can point out something. :) -js LinuxLingam wrote: any pointers on why do i get 'RPC error' when i try to mount a directory from a remote client, using RH8? please help. ?? [ilugd] Red Hat offers new security course
[from http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2003/1118redhato.html] Red Hat Tuesday said it is offering a new training course, designed to improve the security skills of users. The course, called RH423 Red Hat Enterprise Directory Services and Authentication, will cover directory services, authentication and security configuration for companies running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (RHEL 3), Red Hat said. The course will be part of the Red Hat Security Curriculum, within the Red Hat Certified Engineer program. It will teach advanced methods for configuring Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and Kerberos (a secure method for authenticating a request for a service in a computer network) on RHEL 3 servers. For 18 months, we have been working on a portfolio of courses to give more advanced and specific training for people in an enterprise situation, Jasmine Huxtable-Wright, Red Hat training manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said Tuesday. The first of these was an enterprise deployment and systems management course, and this is complementary. It gives security-specific information required by anyone administering a Linux system in an enterprise, she said. These are high-end courses, suitable for skilled Linux professionals and not for someone new to Linux, Huxtable-Wright stressed. By the end of the course, trainees will be able to achieve single schema authentication, a configuration that centralizes authentication and control of access to applications and data throughout the company, Red Hat said. The course will run every six weeks, with 10 people per class, at a cost of $2,598, Huxtable-Wright said. Classes will be held in Red Hat's training centers on the East and West coasts of the U.S., and in the U.K., France, Germany and Italy, she said. [ilugd] Hot News! The Assault of the Momo-Eaters and other Linux issues
The minutes of the meet. I've sent them thrice - it seems to /dev/null! Help me put them up on the list. Regards, Ashwin Hot News! The Assault of the Momo-Eaters and other Linux issues New Delhi is under threat ! The latest outrage was committed by a group of Linux buffs in Dilli Haat on citizens enjoying a tranquil Sunday afternoon in the salubrious surrounds of Dilli Haat. The ILUGDites, as they call themselves, demolished every plate of Momos and Pav Bhaji and drank every cup of Coffee they came across - leaving an aghast citizenry open-jawed and hungry. We spoke to Mr Khidki, from the MegaHard corporation who bitterly reproached the incident ,We shall not allow these cyber terrorists from preventing peaceful companies from carrying out legitimate profitable business. They hound us everywhere with their viral licences. Now they trouble us in Dilli Haat also during our few authorised moments of peace . The Thana i/c Dilli Haat Goon Squad stated that the following were identified at the scene by witnesses :- Self-styled Generallisimo Raju Mathur - wielding threats of an unknown Weapon of Mass Destruction - codenamed GnuPG. Supython Sethi - Hi. Penguinhead Kaushal - The arch enemu of Windowsman. Kishore 'Moneybags' Bhargava - the fiendish financer. Tarun 'The Evil Secretary Bird' Dua Jazzmeet UnWorthy Xyberdip(aka Nagadeepan) Ashish 'The Cyber Kid' Mukherjee Vivek 'Logo Loony' Khurana Anuj Sharma alias The Man from HCLPEROT Sudev 'Still Threatening to Learn Linux!' Barar Wee Wee Wiwek Chief Big Pony Tail Chandra - How! A Lolita named Sharma from the Great Beyond with sidekick Bob 'Who needs Mike?' Adkins Rajesh Kumar (a very sinister and secretive character indeed - even the FBI worries about such people with perfectly normal names). and of course Ashwin Baindur - the Fastest Mouth in the West of India Well, there they all were. Had the Thought Police but known - they could have rounded them all up - except for one archenemy who stayed away from the Matrix - Linux Lingam. The conspiracy began at a shady corner of the Dilli Haat auditorium - after Raju scared mooning couples away with a red pill! The gang true to form turned up in ones and twos to avoid detection. The early birds got sprained necks from watching out for beautiful birds - who could well have been planted by the cops to spy on the meet. Thoroughly disappointed at not finding this to be the case, they then sprained the other side of their necks trying to decide which of the Dilbert characters heading doggedly for the fence at the very end of Dilli Haat could possibly be the Highly Intelligent ILUGDites coming for the meet. The first agenda item of the meeting was the forming of the Secret Terrorist Society. The President Designate Raju Mathur and Treasurer Designate Kishore asked for a Secretary Designate. The two contenders - Tarun and Vivek (not Wiwek) slugged it out till Tarun got his arm-twisted by the hoi polloi into accepting the job for a complete 12 months. He is to be aided, despite his wishes, by Vivek. To sidetrack Vivek from the glory that will be his as Founding Secretary, Vivek has been tasked with a miracle - to get three viable logos for the Holy Grail project of ILUGD - The Sacred Penguin Toga sometimes called a T-shirt. That should keep him busy, hee hee hee! The second agenda point was who was to be given the plum post of being the convenor of the next meet. There being a very large number of aspirants, Ashwin clinched the deal by offering free beer to the Selection Committee. Jagmohan Dalmiya, watchout! So the next meet will be at Ashwin's. Since Fauji's can't count beyond five, the meet is going to be basically Gnubie oriented because they are about the only people Ashwin can impress with his NO-ledge of Linux. Anyway if there's beer - sab kuch chalta hai. The third point that Raju had to make is that such 'do perl or die' issues can only be concluded when the pact is signed in blood! So he expects all the ILUGDites to donate blood for his favorite vampire - the Red Cross near Parliament next Sunday. More from him online later. The meeting then decided on the nefarious activities to be undertaken. The first is for ILUGDites to strike at Linux Bangalore. After that organised mayhem at the LINUX Meet in Delhi next February. Ambition! Ambition! It was after this point that things got out of hand. The people at the Honest and Fresh Coffee stand were threatened into turning over a large part of their premises for the orgy of momos and pav-bhaji that ensued - things began to get quite hot. The stand-owners were finally bribed into silence by ordering gallons of coffee. The last point to decide before leaving was to decide that the next meet will be a real 'bash'. _ The Great MSN Sale. When you are thinking of thin client or LTSP kind of network solution, I would not go for Gnome/KDE at the client end. Both are heavy and you don't want to run all the kind of software which come with these two desktop environment, do you? Yes you need a good graphics card capable of 24bit resolution and may be 3D graphics, because you may be intending the clients to access graphics related software. The main idea is to utilise older PCs( 486, P-I) to work efficiently. You serve software like OpenOffice from a central server. My advice is that you stick to a less heavy Window manager like IceWM, Window Maker, or XFCE4(it is much improved). OpenOffice 1.1 is much faster than the earlier versions. In a LTSP environment, the subsequent loading of OpenOffice at the client end, after some user has already done it, will be really fast( one second or thereabout). And yes, such a solution is thoroughly workable. In fact, I was trying to convince my people its efficacy ( I am in Government), but somehow, saving money by utilizing obsolescent hardware has not been a priority in Govt. offices. -- narsingh Yahoo! [ilugd] (fwd) Hot News! The Assault of the Momo-Eaters and other Linux issues
[Forwarded since Ashwin's posts don't seem to make it to the list...] This is an RFC 1153 digest. (1 message) -- Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Ashwin Baindur [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Hot News! The Assault of the Momo-Eaters and other Linux issues Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2003 09:52:25 +0530 [snip] Hot News! The last point to decide before leaving was to

Old PC's and good graphic cards is sort of contradiction as most the 486 came with ISA bus ( some did with PCI bus ) However since graphics are to be processed at the server and served to client display this means traffic on network. Again was quite surprised to note that in my work situation there is very little network traffic using LTSP as files are served by the same server and only end display travels on network. However all said I am still not convinced that 486 with low mem is good idea for running a X (IceWM etc.) desk as the lag time in updating of display tells.
