[ilugd] BSNL EVDO dongle on Fedora 14
Hi, I am trying to help somebody get a BSNL EVDO card running on Fedora 14. From lsusb, I get that device is (15eb:1231) . Problem is that Fedora 14 sees it just as a storage device and is not detected as a modem. I had a similar problem with my reliance card but usb_modeswitch solved that. However, configuring usb_modeswitch.conf in this case does not help. When usb_modeswitch is run, it ends up giving the error : 'response endpoint not given or found' . Any help to get this working would be much appreciated. Thanks Gurteshwar ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

Was wondering, is anyone aware of larger or comparable Debian installations in the country? Or should we be spraining our wrists trying to pat ourselves on our backs? Regards, -- Raj Hi, First, congratulations on the large scale deployment ! May I also add a few related questions. Feel free to ignore any if they fall in the NDA domain :) 1) Regarding support and access: Setting up telephony systems is not such an easy job and messing them up seems to be even easier. So my question is how much of access do you give the organisation's in-house support team on your servers. Do you for example take the risk of asterisk config files getting messed by somebody at your client's location? Or do you only expose only the dynamic parts of the system (adding users, retrieving call recordings etc). I imagine it would be mandatory to give them root access. Is that correct? If yes, then is it the case of implementing as many safeguards as you can? 2) Licensing: How do you go about explaining them the license. Do you just list major parts like asterisk and debian and tell them we used this and its licensed under so and so foss license? Is there detailed written license documentation to be provided or just providing links to licenses sufficient? Re: [ilugd] Request for suggestion for setting up Asterisk based call-center
Hi, Basically what is illegal to do in terms of VoIP is to say have a PSTN/ISDN line plugged into your voip server and then lease that out to somebody over IP. In effect selling it as a DID number over IP. Most other cases are perfectly legal. There's tons of EPABX systems being sold from vendors like Simens, NEC, etc for years. You plug in an outside line, which could be PSTN or ISDN and distribute calls to your extensions (either through IP or TDM). For IP, these systems (Siemens for eg) come with some sort of a LAN card, which lets you plugin that massive EPABX box on to your LAN switch and route all incoming traffic to your softswitch (Asterisk for eg) and then distribute calls to extensions which maybe IP phones or softphones. You can go for official permission to integrate VOIP with the normal DOT lines/exchanges. Authorities charge heavily for it, but it is possible. There is NO offical permission required. You apply to a provider, who will take some documents from you and do whatever is required in terms of dealing with authorities like TRAI for whatever obligations there maybe. There is NO special license required and certainly NO extra fees. You just pay your provider, the same way you pay for your internet connection. Disclaimer: I'm no legal expert but I just got a PRI line from Airtel, so I've been through the 'process'. From what I'm aware, the primary concept behind the law is preventing toll bypass, which I don't think is happening in Niyaz's case as he mentioned the calls are incoming calls. Even if it was outgoing, it was happening via the PRI, so there also no toll bypass is happening. I don't recall which document it was, but I interpreted it as PBX being allowed, and if the company has multiple locations in India, then PBX over VPN was also permitted. My assessment too is exactly this. I've always found VOIP in India be a gray area, and have never been able to figure out what's legal and what's not. Would be glad if you've some conclusive documents/links. The best I could find was a document on TRAI's website, which was also pretty dated and worded in an almost self-conflicting manner. There really should be more official clarity on this. Regards Gurteshwar ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

[ilugd] CentOS intel 82574L gigE NIC problem
Hi, I have a very weird problem which I'm unable to diagnose after trying various things. So this maybe long, please bear with me. I bought a new IBM x3250 server. It has two gigE ports. lspci :- 0b:00.0 Ethernet Controller : Intel Corp 82574L Gigabit Network Connection 15:00.0 Ethernet Controller : Intel Corp 82574L Gigabit Network Connection lspci -n |grep 0b:00.0 :- 0b:00.0 0200: 8086:10d3 (same for the other one) uname -r :- 2.6.18-194.el5 I installed CentOS 5.5 and configured the interface for dhcp. It fails to connect and just keeps fluctuating. In /var/log/messages/ I see Link is up/down message repeatedly (every second). I can give it a static ip and define a static route, but it does absolutely nothing except self-ping. First I thought it was a driver issue, so I updated to the latest driver for my card (e1000e) first from elrepo.org (didn't work) then from the intel website (didn't work). elrepo btw is not up to date with intel. I called the IBM guys who showed up today with a Windows Server CD today, installed it- same problem there. They called for a new motherboard, put windows 2003 server edition, same problem! They updated the BIOS 3 times.. same problem on all 3. They went back without a solution, collecting the DSA logs (it's an ibm thing i think). They haven't closed the call and are still on it. I then got a new, exact same machine from the vendor, I ran a live cd first (linux mint) and I get a STABLE link, booted windows from the previous installation (hot-swap drives) STABLE link. IBM guys go home, I install CentOS and poof! back to square one! :( Then I tried linux mint, same issue. You can rule out faulty cables or switch ports, I've verified that. Ok, this is really weird, I just found a workaround. By just I mean after I'd typed all of the above email. Just for kicks I put in a dumb 10/100 mbps hub in the path and it works great :) This however, is temporary. Could this be a link negotiation issue? Also, what baffles me is that this problem persisted across 3 motherboards and 2 machines only after CentOS was brought into the picture. CentOS first, followed by other distros. Failed for every one of them. Other OS first (including windows) STABLE link, bring CentOS into the picture, it failed and also for every subsequent OS. I read somewhere that there was a time when the e1000e driver in the kernel was bricking NICs but somebody also told me that code didn't make it into CentOS. Anybody ever come across such a thing? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Gurteshwar ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

[ilugd] Linksys Spa3102 regional settings.
Hi, So I did manage getting hold of a spa3102. I've been trying to set it up with FreeSwitch and integrate my PSTN line. After repeated attempts I was getting nowhere when I finally looked at regional settings. I've tried various configs and am now reasonably sure that its an issue with regional settings. I reset the spa3102 to default settings, and plugged in the PSTN phone line into fxo and an analong phone into fxs. There is no network cable connected and no sort of PBX involved. When I call my PSTN number, the phone at fxs does ring but a call is not being established. If I answer the phone, there is no call established and it disconnects in 2 sec. and I get a disconn tone, while the caller continues to hear the PSTN number ring. Same thing if the call goes unanswered. The PSTN line status on the spa3102 shows Last Call Disconn. reason: CPC Signal. I think I am correct in assuming that there is no point in any further configuration attempts until I manage to get this call established first. Should this plug and play setup be working by default on every spa3102 if regional settings are correct? If that is the case then it mostly seems like an issue with regional settings. I looked at the voxilla forums and other places and tried whatever regional tone settings I could find for India. Nothing has worked so far. When I bring in the PBX into the picture, I have no problem with my phone working as an sip extension doing everything that is configured just as any other softphone would do. The problem is with PSTN and I suspect its regional settings. Where can I find the correct settings? If anybody has this device configured, please drop me a line. india is indeed a young nation, with approximately 54% of its population under the age of 35 years, and that's a lot of folks for a 1 billion population. what amazes me, is how come no one has yet seriously considered a 'Pirate Party of India'. the one in sweden is the fourth-largest in its country already, and similar ones exist across Europe. take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_Party Fourth largest and this time they may also get a seat in the EU parliament. link: http://in.reuters.com/articlePrint?articleId=INIndia-39428420090505 i am reasonably certain such a party would soon emerge in india, more sensitive (hopefully) to our cultural values towards knowledge and sharing across software, authored literature, medicine, education, agriculture, genetics, and more. While such parties do exist elsewhere, India would certainly benefit the most by something like this emerging here. who knows, we might just see some of our young folks from ilug-d moving on to form such a party eventually. i can think of several dozen candidates from the foss community! Hi, I received an email from crmarket...@airtel.in, I use airtel broadband but this is the first time they sent such a mail. The mail had an image attached which looks like a snapshot of some webpage. I spoke to Airtel CC and at first one person verified the mail but seemed quite unsure to me. He said it was only sent to 'special' customers which makes me wonder why I am a 'special' customer. A few things I wish to point out regarding your take on my talk. From your post http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/freed-day-2/ The real story which he forgot was that the year after, ERNET was up and shell accounts were starting to give people which dried up the business of BBS overtime. Not something I forgot but was actually aware of. It would've made sense to include, if I was giving an elaborate account of the business history of BBS overtime. My whole point was how people got together on the boards(i cant call it the internet :-)) for speaking against something they didn't like or thought was unfair and how it actually resulted in action on ground. My not including or as you say forgetting what happened to the BBS business after that does not dispute my claim in any way. Also, I thought it to be irrelevant to the given context. His 2 second plug www.indiasopinion.com as his take on where this can be taken forward. This is completely misunderstood. Maybe I did not do well enough to get my point across clearly to you. If you asked Kishore, I think he would recall that after the first volunteer meet, I had quite a detailed discussion with him regarding my talk. I even asked him if I should completely remove any mention of my 2 second plug as the idea was to bring forward the research that showed how the information we seek online is directly proportional to the opinions we form and communicate. And how these two also happen to be the primary activities of all users. My effort was to pitch these ideas and research to an audience with way more advanced technical skills than mine, so that they could try and decide how it can be taken forward. Sadly, as of now my skills are limited to system/network administration. I am not(yet) a developer. The only little contributions I could make were via Wordpress, which I had been checking out for some time. Hence, my 2 second plug which I think is by no means conclusive. A lot can and I think needs to be done to take this forward. My take, watch out for wordpress+buddypress, that should be a killer thing to look at ;) Great. Thanks for letting me know of this.
