[ilugd] increasing the size of the existing partition on FC3

2006-01-04 Thread ankush grover
hey friends,

I want to resize the existing partition /home.Currently /home is of 20GB and
18GB is full.

There is one way I can achieve this target

create a bigger partition say 35 GB(/dev/sdb8),mount this partition on
/home1 copy the files and folders from /home(/dev/sda4) to
/home1(/dev/sdb8), edit the entry in fstab to mount (/dev/sdb8) on /home and
then reboot the system.

Is there any way I can resize the partition of /home without following the
above example ? The partition type id ext3 what I wanted to know is there
any tool or utility on Linux which can do this?

I am using FC3.

Thanks & Regards

[ilugd] converting php files to xml on FC3

2006-01-04 Thread ankush grover
We are working on a project which converts php files to xml. The procedure
is like this php fetches the data from the database and then it converts it
to the xml form.

We have done this on Windows and now want to set this up on FC3 .

I am not able to find the rpm for php-libxml2 and php-iconv requires
php-common,db3,mm packages(only php-common is available).

Most important is that whether the rpm of php that comes with FC3 does have
the support for libxml2 or not. How do I know whether php has been compiled
with libxml2 support or not.

If php is not compiled with libxml2 support then can I configure the php
with libxml2 support through php-*.scr.rpm or I have to take the
php-4.3.11.tar.gz and compile it.

I am using php-4.3.11,mysql version 4.1.11 on FC3

Thanks & Regards

You can try qtparted (http://qtparted.sourceforge.net) but only if your
disk even has more space that you can play with partition sizing.
Obviously you need to take backups etc as partition editing can go
horribly wrong. If you dont have space on the HDD then i think the only
way to do it would be the way you have described.

cheers.

GNU parted lets you resize ext3 partitions. See "man parted" for
details. There are even GUI frontends, e.g., qtparted, but these
might have slightly reduced functionality. When manipulating
partitions, it is always a good idea to back up your data ahead of
time.

For ex I have one existing hdd of 80 GB on which /home has 20GB now I add
another hard drive of 40 GB and want to assign whole space of the new hard
drive to the /home partition which is on the first hard drive. Is this
possible ?

I don't know of any easy way to do this. It might be possible with
logical volumes, using LVM, but someone else will have to help you

You can't migrate an existing filesystem to LVM after the fact -- it
has to be configured as an LV from the start.

I've had enough issues with not being able to determine partition
sizes at system install time, and when I bought this current desktop
computer last February I decided to LVM everything that could be
LVM'd. Now I have /, /home and /data (where I keep miscellaneous data
- -- huge amounts) as LVM. Have run out of space on /data twice, bought
a new disk in the process, and it has grown from 100 to 150 to now
250GB without having to do anything except add a new partition, tell
LVM about and dynamically extend the filesystem.

My suggestion to the OP would be to create an LVM on the new disk, add
one partition to it to begin with and copy the data to that. Once
that is done, s/he can add the original partition to the LVM and keep
growing the LV as and when required. Saves huge energy and symlinks
all over the place, specially if, like me, you don't reinstall your
systems all that often.

Please have a look at the LVM HOWTO at tldp.org for more information.
The recipes section is particularly useful for quick-and-dirty jobs.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought that he wanted the new /home
to span the old disk, and part of the new one. The only way that I
think this might be possible is with LVM. Maybe someone has a
 better idea.

[ilugd] Seeking help for IT initiative for vernacular

2006-01-04 Thread Abhishek Choudhary
[Forwarding without prejudice -- Raju]

Respected Sir / Madam,

I am writing this message to seek help regarding an initiative for the true
and total empowerment of vernacular medium students in India in the field of
Information Technology. This relates to the development of vernacular free
open source OS (DOS in Hindi, Bangla, Gujrati etc.) and programming languages
(C, C++, lex, yacc, assembly, Java, Prolog etc. in Hindi, Bangla, Gujrati
etc.). This is the first time ever that such software has been successfully
developed, even though there have been many research groups working on it for
decades now. What is more important is that all this software has been
released as 'free' for the benefit of the vernacular medium students. I have
no financial interests from it. I have attached the original announcement
with this message, along with another message discussing some important
topics regarding feasibility issues concerning such effort.

The kind of support I expect may be in any form (coding, awareness,
sponsorship, advertisements etc.). There is one specific manner in which one
can contribute greatly, with or without involving me as outlined below.
1) Adopt the vernacular IT initiative for a school or college in one's own
hometown.
2) Arrange for a few computers (even old second hand one's can support the
software I have developed, so you may donate old ones). This software "does
not" require any add on hardware or commercial software for supporting Indian
vernacular display, OS and programming languages. You will have to contact the
school or some concerned organisation for the actual transfer.

As about me, I am a 24 yrs old IT professional and the winner of the Computer
Society of India's Eastern Regional Young IT Professional Award 2005 (national
rounds are yet to be held, but I'm sure I'll win.) You can view my CV at
http://www.indicybers.com/abhishek/

I would finally like to apologise if you find this email unsolicited, and
thank you for reading this far. This has been sent to you individually and
your name has not been included in any mailing list. This is the only mail
you shall receive, unless you wish to further communicate regarding this
matter.

Mail announcing the availability of FOSS system software in
vernaculars (Hindi/Bangla C, C++, assembly, BASIC, LOGO etc.) ==

Respected Sir/Madam,

This is to inform you of the availability of the first ever "complete" suite
of open-source programming languages for Indian vernaculars. It includes
equivalents of C, C++, lex, yacc, assembly, Java etc. in Hindi, Bangla and
other vernaculars. Along with this I have also released Hindi and Bangla DOS,
including BASIC and Logo for vernaculars. The downloads are available at
http://www.indicybers.com

These projects have won Computer Society of India's Young IT Professional
Award (Eastern region) 2005 (Winner) and 2004 (Special mention), two years in
a row. I shall be competing at the 2005 national level now.

Some of the innovations of this project include a system for displaying Indic
scripts in "true" text-mode. This is done without using any aditional
hardware. At no point has any graphical (rasterising) method been used for
this. All the required glyphs have been accomodated in the extended ASCII
code page, leaving 7-bit ASCII unaltered. This method is applicable to all
Brahmi derived composite syllabic Indian scripts. Hindi, Bangla, Assamese and
Gujrati scripts have been implemented. Oriya and Punjabi are under
development. There are strong suggestions that this may be applicable for
South Indian scripts as well. This has made it possible to have BIOS/POST in
Indic. Besides, this system being free, it does not add to the procurement
cost as compared to commercial products.

Another contribution of this project includes a "case and diacritic
independent, compiler acceptable" transliteration system. This is completely
invertible and is applicable to all Indian languages. This has direct mapping
to the IPA and, hence, may be used to develop programming languages in "any"
human language. It also has bearings on web technology, as it can allow
Indic URLs in IPv4 as well. It may be used to encode even static web-pages,
such that if someone does not have the required fonts then one may see the
Indic web-page in Roman script transliteration, instead of "boxes" (unicode)
or garbage (other encodings), from the same "static" html.

Finally, the task of Indic programming language design has not been trivial
either. I have also included support for HP printers. The system uses GCC as
back-end and is highly portable. There is both ISCII and UNICODE support for
all languages, including Hindi/Bangla DOS and the IDE. Necessary filters have
been provided for conversions between ISCII, Romenagri, UNICODE, APCISR,
HP-PCL etc. The languages

great that you have planned gnunify earlier this earlier, and that you
have initiated the call earlier. Hope this year around things are even
better managed. Loved the new logo of gnunify, very neat.

Had a proposal for a talk on Using Linux desktops:

1. Authoring Sound and Music on GnuLinux using Agnula Distribution.
This talk is based on the larger digital sound workshop i have been
conducting annually since the past two years. Specifically the talk
will cover topics like:
1. what is the agnula distribution, and its installation.
2. sound-editing concepts and tools, from audacity to ardour.
3. authoring drumming patterns and ethnic drunkits, including indian
percussion instruments.
4. designing sound and sound instruments.
5. adding special effects through ladspa plugins, and the overall alsa
and jack architecture.
6. calculating microtonal scales, ideal for indian classical and other
genres of world music.
7. sequencing software and composing multi-track recordings.
8. authoring, packaging, and publishing sound, kits, sound fonts, and
final tracks.
9. plus a few more topics, like sound server concepts, streaming,
architectures, etc.

you may check out some of the drumming sequences i've authored and
published at http://creative.linux-delhi.org

Orientation to New Users / Linux Desktops

The Century of OpenSource Medicines, Food, Literature, Knowledge, Culture.

This talk discusses the opensource movement beyond its traditional
domain of software. IT covers the importance of Indian ethnic
knowledge, the global public domain, challenges in medicine and world
heath, controversies in patents for intangible economy. Focusses on
what YOU can do as a lone individual.
A powerful talk that focusses on the roles of the TKDL project,
wikipedia, wiki technologies, the emerging role and discussions on the
creativecommons project, ibiblio, gutenberg, creative.linux-delhi.org
project, and more.
Call for action on redefining the role of Linux User Groups and GLUGS
in India to move from being focussed on techies & software, to move
towards becoming knowledge and cultural hubs of the new world.

If there's anything else you wish me to focus on, please let me know.

:-)

Re: [ilugd] Seeking help for IT initiative for vernacular

2006-01-04 Thread Linux Lingam
[snip]

Quite impressed to see the initiatives in localization, especially in
programming languages.
Wow!

Just a small suggestion: Please use the word 'Indic' rather than 'vernacular'.

The word 'vernacular' is a generic, insulting term, historically used
by former colonial masters. It literally means 'languague of the slave
or servant' and is derogatory. Vernacular could be applied for any
non-English language.

The word you seek is 'Indic' as in, belonging to the region which
shares the rich heritage of languages that evolved across the Indian
subcontinent and Asia, beyond the existing political boundaries of a
dozen or more countries.

The primary objective I have in mind is to get more developers from
the country involved in Drupal development. Obviously, support would
work better on the official Drupal support lists and IRC channel than
on a regional list.
