Dear all both the images showed following characters
*
*
*Bark turing black towards maturity, Leaves simple, alternate,
oblong-lanceolate,
acute apex, Leaf stalk 10-15 mm long (Seen in picture), Young leaves are
reddish (Also seen in first picture). *
*
*
*Are leaves leathery when touched ?*
*
*
*Its really difficult to conform the ID with morphological characters, but
the available information pointing towards Diospyros malabarica?*

Diospyros ok... what kind? I cant tell just from leaves.. not an

 BUT but definitely not Nyctanthus..

Parijat leaves.. young ones are never red... AND never droop as they
are here...in the second set of pictures...
I should perhaps know... my mom's garden had two... for more than 40
 years...

I grew up playing under them... and collecting flowers... local women
came to collect these ..they used to leave their saris spread under
the trees.. since the flowers open around 4 am and drop as the day
light becomes harsher..best one were the ones that dropped early on..
used for various pujas... and some underhanded folks use the dried
stalks to adulterate saffron sold in the market ...

@Bhagyashri: what you wrote about Parijat is true.. but this plant in
the pic is not a Parijat...

Found in one of the parks here at Muscat, Oman on the 16th of June, 2011.
A cultivated medium sized tree, laden with fruits.
My friend tried eating one of the ripe fruits out of many fallen
down. She described it as sweet and very sticky, left an odd feeling in
the throat for a long time.
Ripe fruits were about 1 inch.
 Any clues?

Alok ji Geranium wallichianum can be easily differentiated
from other large flowered species (G. collinum, G.
grevilleanum, G. wallichianum, G. tuberaria) in that stipules
are very large (1-2 cm long), very broad (ovate-oblong) and
often common between two leaves on each side(due to fusion of
two adjacent stipules; may be often bifid). In other species
the stipules are very narrow, linear, usually less than 1 cm
long and two between two adjacent leaves on each side (they
 are free not united).

used to grow abundantly along southern coast in Bengal.. not seen so
commonly now a days though...

the seed pods are interesting looking too...

yes Madhuri, is n't childhood memory marvelous...
its wonderful the way a child remembers stuff.

WHeat could be mixed in with the weeds seeds and simultaneously be infected
with ergot fungus...
there are many episodes of ergot poisoning in europe when the entire
section of population ate ergot infected rye bread.. rye is a type of wheat
in europe.
so your neighbor of childhood may have it right that there was congress
grass seeds and ergot... both.. could be...
I wonder if anybody has looked into whether indians around that time had a
higher incidence of leaky valve syndromes or other vascular disorders out of
proportion HIGH incidence or miscarriages or other vascular events,
incidences of which have since subsided ... since the infected wheat is no
longer consumed...

we in India have the some of the strongest statisticians but the govt never
looks into these kinds a data... I have not seen any papers related to
wheat weed problems affecting heart or causing higher numbers of
miscarriages/abortions
