 *Dear all:

 *
 *

*This plant was found growing in a friend’s garden in 2011 October … she
did not know the name… this year its gone … so no further history as it
 developed.*

 *
 *

*When I photographed it, it was about 3 feet tall, new leaves were
emerging, looking fresh. Largest leaf was about 10 – 12 cms long , no
hairs on top or bottom. The main stem was an inch thick and just becoming
woody, so I suspect this would have been a shrub if developed, or even a
bush. Not a herb by any means.
 *

 *
 *

*The flowers are vaguely reminiscent of the Solanum species but not
really…flowers were 1.5 to 2 cms across , light pink somewhat fleshy
 petals.
 *

 *
 *

*The berries at that point were green, about 4 – 6 mm round … with a
little black point of a dot.*

 *Thank you*

 Site: Kolkata Botanical Garden, Shibpur

Tree ID: Identified and labeled by Bot Garden Botanists

 UD note:

Both of these trees are planted in Bengal  and rest of the NE India

as garden and Avenue trees in Urban landscapes..

This Tectona has a distinctly different Bark habit than the T. Grandis
 tree….

 T.  Hamiltoniana   bark is brownish grey and peels of in roundish patches

revealing a pale grey patch, which darkens  as it ages…

it also flowers earlier (April and May) than T. Grandis ( July and August) ,

and T. Hamiltoniana  leaves are only a  7-8 inches long..

 T. Grandis is used for red and yellow dyes (leaves)  and

Wood for medicinal purposes for heachache and inflammatory conditions,

besides  being used for railway treks and furniture making…

Much has been written about Tectona Grandis…

and large plantations exist in India, Burma, Indonesia and around the world…

Not much writings about  about T. Hamiltoniana,

although its wood is described as being heavier, better shine taker when
 used in cabinetry,

Yet neglected , as far back as 1978 it was reported as

part of list of “Species Undergoing Genetic Impoverishment” …

Dont know if things have changed!!!

Photo taken in December 2010, in Asansol (W.B.). These shrubs are in good
numbers in a dense shade of pine trees(dried leaves can be seen fallen on
the subject). Normally very little sunlight reaches them. It caught my eye
due to the bright red fruits, though there were no flowers. On peeling one
of the fruits a sticky fluid came out. Please help with the ID.

“This one is something else, and *not Lamprachaenium microcephalum*.
Am attaching images of Lamprachaenium microcephalum for comparison.
Lamprachaenium microcephalum is commonly called Purple blue heads.
 The leaves are tomentose beneath.

 Dear friends,

Requesting ID of Asteraceae plant growing at Vaghbil, Thane (Maharashtra).
Habitat near creek side lining rice fields and mangrove.
The erect much branched herb standing about a metre high, with slightly
 woody branches.

 Two sets of photos attached: (1) 17 NOV 09 and (2) 18 DEC 08.
Number of photos too many ... hoping to make it easier for ID.

Referencing Shrikant ji's FFOS, putting my own wild guess: *Lamprachaenium
 microcephalum* (quite a tongue-twisting genus name !!)

 Regards.

I would go with E. antiquurum, because the angles are distinctly 3-winged,
the wings are running almost straight. In E. tortilis the angles are not
that promently winged, they are lobulate with stout paired spines on lobes,
and most importantly the angles are spirally twisted like we have in E.
neriifolia where of course the angles are not that prominents, and there are
 5 spiral rows.

I has taken these shots 3 years back from Rehekuri.
Are these Lepidagathis cristata? Is the colour variation normal?

People give very peculiar names to the plants based on their
perception and sometimes these names continue their use in local
language. Some times they even relate it to religion by attaching some
god's name to it. Thats a way of local nomenclature. It does help a
lot at time whereas creates confusion too. One such example is HABE
AMRI, which is a broken, molested, marathi word for HABENARIA and
 nothign else according to me.

The plant growing in Howrah Botanic Garden which is called Mad Tree is
Chrysophyllum cainito. Bengalis also call it rasogulla tree, I imagine
why dont they call it Gulab Jamun tree as the fruits are dark bluish
brinjal or brown like a Gulab Jamun.

Pterygota alata diversifolia is called Mad Tree or Buddha's coconut!!

24-25 degree C. the branches bore a brown felt and the leaves were
  glabrous.

Flowers reddish in color and the fully opened inflorescence was of the
size of a large fist. the flowers were slightly fragrant and pretty
