[efloraofindia:247376] Valley of Flowers in August

2016-07-16 Thread Rajesh Sachdev
Friends, I am scheduled to visit Valley of flowers , uttarakhand, next
month with four friends of mine. I have sought logistical help from one of
my known resources in the state. Though landslides and cloudbursts are
common in the state during these months. But media coverage has put me in
cautious mode. I seek suggestions from my friends , from Uttarakhand , to
please give your opinion of how conditions are there.

Thanks

Re: [efloraofindia:167406] ORCHIDACEAE Juss.: Habit and Habitat

2013-10-03 Thread Rajesh Sachdev
OMG , what a great knowledge you have Pankaj jino wonder your IDs are
considered full an final conclusion. Thanks for sharing it.
On Oct 3, 2013 11:00 AM, Pankaj Kumar sahanipan...@gmail.com wrote:

Orchids are very unique and they are found in wide range of habitats
 at diverse elevations.
Still they are highly sensitive. They can be EPIPHYTIC (growing on
 other trees- not as parasite); TERRESTRIAL (growing on ground);
AQUATIC (growing in water); SEMI-AQUATIC (growing near water or in
 areas which are waterlogged for significant duration of the year);
 SUB-TERRENEAN (growing completely below ground).

They occupy great range of elevations depending on the region of earth
 they are found.
People say that epiphytic orchids are not found at higher elevations.
But this is not true. Some taxa like Dendrobium brevicaule are found
upto 4000m elevation. Overall, terrestrial orchids reach much higher
 elevation that epiphytic ones.

Orchids occupy wide range of habitats. However the diversity is lower
in homogenous vegetation where as it is higher in heterogenous
forests. Highest diversity is found in warm and humid areas like
 tropical rain forests.

One of the main reasons for their high diversity and wide distribution
is the absence of endosperm in the seeds. Hence they are very light
and can be carried to greater distance by wind. When they fall in new
area, they either adapt well or they die. In rare cases they try to
customize themselves to the new environment giving rise to a new
species over a long period of time. Orchids are cross pollinated and
natural hybrids are known to occur in wild. Cross pollination helps in
maintaining high genetic diversity within and between different
 populations.

meant for repelling insects since developing fruits are contained in
persistent calyx. In the fourth picture a caterpillar is visible eating

species in my mind as target. And that is not only me most of people who
visit VoF have such feeling that they must see that flower. The flower is
 Brahma Kamal.

Four months of desperation, I realised that I am medically unfit for VoF.
Viral fever and lose of weight put me in week category and doctor declared
me unfit for such tough trek. But there were reasons for me to still do it,
JUST DO IT. (a) Commitment to 20+ participants and (b) willingness to see
 my target flower.

On the day one while trekking up from Govind Ghat to Ghanghariya my
health collapsed. The trek, for good 13 Kms and uphill, was full of flowers
on both sides and I kept on ignoring. Just because my mind was not
concentrating on them but on my collapsing health. Day 2 was fine
and comparatively better. Thanks to Smita Raskar for supporting me and
offering me tablets etc. Day 3 was suppose to be for Hemkund Saheb, the
only place where I could have seen Brahmakamal. And on this day again I
started feeling uncomfortable. I somehow managed to reach to point from
where I could see a flower or two and click them using the maximum zoom
from my digital camera. Very blur and dull pic, I could secure. Today,
when I have redesigned the VoF tour (in fact 2 tours in June in August) ,
that sense of incompleteness is chasing me. That sense is asking me to go
and click your beloved flower, more closely and sharply. With god's
blessing today I have better camera and I wish and pray to my god that
Waheguru ji, give me strength and willpower to complete my mission and
photograph my beloved flower . The flower that has Shri Hemkund Saheb in
the background and snow clad mountain on either side.

With this wish, I am presenting my flora (remote) picture of the year
2012 for my beloved Brahma Kamal

Dear efI members,
I am sorry for cross posting but this may be of interest to few among you.

We did Valley of Flowers National Park in 2012 and covered with more then
180 species of flora, 20 species of butterflies, one mammal and 10 species
of birds. This was the first experiment which brought a very good response
with 23 participation from all parts of the country. Now in 2013 we are
doing it again. In two batches . June and August. June is the time to see
the flowers freshly blooming . This is also the time when tourism in this
Himalayan protected area is little away to start. Probably less crowd and
more sightings. Precisely orchids, climbers and trees are the target for
this batch. For more details, click on the link.

Satish ji,
I actually assumed that Anjani (as it is the case with Matheran) would be
the prime fruiting tree for these squirrels but the story
turned different there. There were many Umber (Ficus racemosa) and few
Jaamun ((Syzygium cumini)) too, both playing a good role for these
squirrels . Though Anjani (Memecylon umbellatum) dominated the forest on
lower ridge. Perhaps there it must be prime fruiting tree for them.

flora and fauna of the park, I observed Kavalama urens (Sterculia urens),

Very much useful suggestion Dr Pankaj Kumar. I carry cigarette lighter but
only to use it in emergencies. Chocolates , I am also fond of but my
daughter finish all of them before I leave for field :) However, I buy them
from local shops . I am looking forward to buy Petzel headlight as
suggested by Nidhan Singh ji, with SOS function. My macro lens is always
mounted on camera and I use telelens only when I want to change it to.
Earplugs are only for travelling part (specially in train/bus) but not in
field.

Prashant ji, soon I am going to upgrade my bag which would be capable to
accomodate medical kit / emergency kit. Note pad and pen was already
mentioned in my check-list. Full sleeves in Mumbai are unbearable. I only
wear them in winters. However I am going to buy full sleeves T-shirt with
comfortable fabric.

Torch: I carry a torch which has SOS signal facility. Its good for

Carry chalk sticks, just to mark ways, or carry clothe/plastic ribbons to
mark your ways. Its always helpful.
Prefer to keep the lens mounted on the camera. Its not good for the camera
to open the cover again and again and expose the interiors.
Ofcourse an umbrella is always good to carry
Never use earplugs on phone while in field. You never know who could be
 calling.
Lastly a SMILE is must it repels many of the animal types :P
 Enjoy...

Navendu Page ji , on Indian Flora, wrote that this is Terminalia bellerica

I strongly feel this to be Lannea coromandelica.
 The season matches too.
The photographs of flower differ from region to region and also according
to phase of maturity. I have seen completely yellow flowers as well as
flowers with strong red tinge as seen here. Often the petals are bigger in
some phase while the stamens are bigger at different phase. This is my
 perception.
 Will wait for comments.
Attaching my pictures of Lannea coromandelica.

This pic I have posted earlier or not, no sure about it. But this was
lying in my pending IDs for almost 6 months. All I could recollect it was
clicked in month of May`12. Where and what, I have no idea. Where are the
others pics of the parts of the plant/climber/tree, I am afraid of that,
too. May be I cant recollect during my extensive field trip during those
days at Matheran or at Barvi for its whereabouts.

All that I can guess about are Anogeissus latifolia, Ceiba pentandra or
 Lophopetalum
 wightianum !

 POSTING IT FOR ID PURPOSE.
