[efloraofindia:247376] Valley of Flowers in August
Friends, I am scheduled to visit Valley of flowers , uttarakhand, next month with four friends of mine. I have sought logistical help from one of my known resources in the state. Though landslides and cloudbursts are common in the state during these months. But media coverage has put me in cautious mode. I seek suggestions from my friends , from Uttarakhand , to please give your opinion of how conditions are there. Thanks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "efloraofindia" group. Re: [efloraofindia:167406] ORCHIDACEAE Juss.: Habit and Habitat
OMG , what a great knowledge you have Pankaj jino wonder your IDs are considered full an final conclusion. Thanks for sharing it. On Oct 3, 2013 11:00 AM, Pankaj Kumar sahanipan...@gmail.com wrote: Orchids are very unique and they are found in wide range of habitats at diverse elevations. Still they are highly sensitive. They can be EPIPHYTIC (growing on other trees- not as parasite); TERRESTRIAL (growing on ground); AQUATIC (growing in water); SEMI-AQUATIC (growing near water or in areas which are waterlogged for significant duration of the year); SUB-TERRENEAN (growing completely below ground). They occupy great range of elevations depending on the region of earth they are found. People say that epiphytic orchids are not found at higher elevations. But this is not true. Some taxa like Dendrobium brevicaule are found upto 4000m elevation. Overall, terrestrial orchids reach much higher elevation that epiphytic ones. Orchids occupy wide range of habitats. However the diversity is lower in homogenous vegetation where as it is higher in heterogenous forests. Highest diversity is found in warm and humid areas like tropical rain forests. One of the main reasons for their high diversity and wide distribution is the absence of endosperm in the seeds. Hence they are very light and can be carried to greater distance by wind. When they fall in new area, they either adapt well or they die. In rare cases they try to customize themselves to the new environment giving rise to a new species over a long period of time. Orchids are cross pollinated and natural hybrids are known to occur in wild. Cross pollination helps in maintaining high genetic diversity within and between different populations. In trade they call it ‘Patthar Long’. However, other species *Didymocarpus aromaticus* (=* D.subalternans*) has strong agreeable aroma in aerial parts. Photographed near Jeolikot, Uttarakhand. And that is not only me most of people who visit VoF have such feeling that they must see that flower. The flower is Brahma Kamal. Four months of desperation, I realised that I am medically unfit for VoF. Viral fever and lose of weight put me in week category and doctor declared me unfit for such tough trek. But there were reasons for me to still do it, JUST DO IT. (a) Commitment to 20+ participants and (b) willingness to see my target flower. On the day one while trekking up from Govind Ghat to Ghanghariya my health collapsed. The trek, for good 13 Kms and uphill, was full of flowers on both sides and I kept on ignoring. Just because my mind was not concentrating on them but on my collapsing health. Day 2 was fine and comparatively better. Thanks to Smita Raskar for supporting me and offering me tablets etc. Day 3 was suppose to be for Hemkund Saheb, the only place where I could have seen Brahmakamal. And on this day again I started feeling uncomfortable. I somehow managed to reach to point from where I could see a flower or two and click them using the maximum zoom from my digital camera. Very blur and dull pic, I could secure. Today, when I have redesigned the VoF tour (in fact 2 tours in June in August) , that sense of incompleteness is chasing me. That sense is asking me to go and click your beloved flower, more closely and sharply. With god's blessing today I have better camera and I wish and pray to my god that Waheguru ji, give me strength and willpower to complete my mission and photograph my beloved flower . The flower that has Shri Hemkund Saheb in the background and snow clad mountain on either side. This was the first experiment which brought a very good response with 23 participation from all parts of the country. Now in 2013 we are doing it again. In two batches . June and August. June is the time to see the flowers freshly blooming . This is also the time when tourism in this Himalayan protected area is little away to start. Probably less crowd and more sightings.
