Hello, The plant is Rivea hypocrateriformis in my opinion because my reference photos of Ipomoea violaceae show the stamens rarely if ever protrude beyond the tube but most of my reference photos of Rivea hypocraterifomis show the stamens ( not very far but ) *very visibly*exerted beyond the tube. Gurcharan ji, Thank you for your clarifications regarding the current confusion in different databases referring to Ipomoea dichroa and Ipomoea arachnosperma. I agree that in many cases it may be a case of taxonomic judgement. I stated my position regarding synonyms being used as if they had the same status as an accepted name repeated here: The current accepted name should be used in place of older outdated synonyms , otherwise people get the impression that synonym in botany means = The same as and that is not true because *the synonym in botany refers to the outdated name that is no longer current as the legitimate name *and *that* is why it has only the *status of synonym *Regarding the discussion and hopeful clarification of legitimate binomials or epithets , certainly synonyms will be addressed in the course of the clarification process.* *I would still take the position *regarding generalized usage of nomenclature that an accepted name (when clear ) should be used in place of any synonym* , that there is a distinct organizational premise for assigning an accepted (international ?) name over any other illegitimate name , because *a plant can (and should) have only one accepted legitimate name but can have many synonyms...and a binomial or epithet which has synonym status as a lower ranking term for some other accepted binomial , may have legitimate status in it's own right.*. The *general usage of synonyms , as if they had the same rank* ( and therefore were the equivalent in terms of correct usage) *as an accepted name *would tend (in the final analysis) towards engendering the mistaken concept that a plant can ( and should) have more than one accepted name. There should ultimately be only one accepted legitimate name , as that is one of the goals of modern organized taxonomic nomenclature , (*however and whenever the conclusion is finally arrived at*) and agreed upon Internationally. best regards, Ron [image: Logo for Google Docs] https://docs.google.com - trackedhttps://docs.google.com On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 9:03:15 AM UTC-4, Balkar wrote: I've shared Convolvulaceae week: Ipomoea dichroa canal bank Sutana and Thermalhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1hZXFJjEHS_qgTTshoSi4RiauhuTkxwuny4XoxCni9ys/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1hZXFJjEHS_qgTTshoSi4RiauhuTkxwuny4XoxCni9ys/edit Click to open: - Convolvulaceae week: Ipomoea dichroa canal bank Sutana and Thermalhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1hZXFJjEHS_qgTTshoSi4RiauhuTkxwuny4XoxCni9ys/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1hZXFJjEHS_qgTTshoSi4RiauhuTkxwuny4XoxCni9ys/edit Google Docs makes it easy to create, store and share online documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Any name is legitimate which has been published according to the rules of nomenclature and can be considered while deciding the correct/accepted name. There can be many legitimate name for a taxon, but only one correct/accepted name. All rest of names legitimate as well as illegitimate ones are its synonyms. I must wonder about the reasoning involved that legitimate accepted name should not be used together, because in order for any accepted name to be accepted , it must have been published and therefore legitimate. Are you taking a position that ,once a name *becomes accepted* that it (*by virtue of becoming accepted*) *looses status as 'legitimate'* (?) and so combination of accepted legitimate is an error of nomenclatural terminology ?...is legitimate ' implied ' in accepted and therefore redundant ? Hello, Yes,the literature often uses the term tubercle for these type of protuberances although most definitions of tubercle specifically indicate that a tubercle is round or rounded : A tubercle or tuberculum. n. In botany, any root of a class embracing both tuberous roots and tubercles: used specifically by Lindley. n -cle— suffix forming nouns indicating smallness: cubicle Tuberculate: An organism or part of an organism which is covered in *fleshy and raised protuberances,* also called tubercules. tubercle n. 1. (Life Sciences Allied Applications / Botany) any small*rounded * nodule or elevation, esp on the skin, on a bone, or on a plant. *small eminence*, or* warty outgrowth* ;a* tuberlike swelling* [C16: from Latin tūberculum a little swelling, diminutive of tuber ] and since the protuberances on Ipomoea alba, Ipomoea muricata and Ipomoea parasitica are usually not truly rounded , I have usually opted to call it like it is e.g. a *soft-fleshy spine or thorn-like protuberance* because the structures in question are usually not rounded. regards, Ron . I think the ID is correct because - 1) my copy of “Plant Groups” (by H. Here are links to 2 crops and enhancements that I did from the original photos posted above by Vijayasankar base of outer tube non constricted as in Ipomoea carnea http://cubits.org/pics/2012-03-19/Ron_Convolvulaceae/983c55.jpg warty sepals and stems populated by some tubecles http://cubits.org/pics/2012-03-19/Ron_Convolvulaceae/6243b8.jpg I look forward to someone coming forth with any additional information. regards, Ron On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 11:59:01 PM UTC-4, Vijayasankar wrote: I've shared Convolvulaceae week: RVS4: Ipomoea albahttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit Click to open: - Convolvulaceae week: RVS4: Ipomoea albahttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit Dear all, Ipomoea alba, from Andhra Pradesh... I will be very frank and that is I have much difficulty using herbarium specimens because I am wired to look for both color and fine structural details and these are either distorted or missing entirely from dried specimens, especially very old specimens...and I have seen where 'The Experts' have been mislead by old dried, distorted specimens... There is just no way to know for sure what a dried plant looked like as a Living plant...someone can take all the specialized training available on how to interpret dried specimens but it is always guesswork to some degree... I fully realize that dried specimens was all that was possible under some circumstances and these old specimens can still provide material for comparative DNA analysis , but , I think if a person wants to know what Living plants look like , then you must have either Living plants or good high resolution photos to use as a reference...hopefully holographic imaging will be available in the not too distant future... regards, Ron On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 11:59:01 PM UTC-4, Vijayasankar wrote: I've shared Convolvulaceae week: RVS4: Ipomoea albahttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit Click to open: - Convolvulaceae week: RVS4: Ipomoea albahttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1gA9PK8sV7_lASflpKVXgdB8qE64_YDFmqa5GO5cv_-g/edit Dear all, Ipomoea alba, from Andhra Pradesh... Dinesh ji, I had many keys lost in several hard drive crashes but once I grow a plant , the features remain in my mind and I mentally automatically recognize many features which are often difficult to convey precisely / eloquently in words. Ipomoea indica has *erect pedicels* while I.*parasitica has reflexed pedicels*. The* sepals are considerably different on both species* and the *architecture of the peduncles is very different.* The seeds have different characteristics , especially the fine details of the hilium. Ipomoea parasitica has the same type of soft spiny protuberances as on I.muricata and these are* lacking in I.indica*. Ipomoea parasitica has cordate leaves while Ipomoea indica can have cordate or trilobed leaves. Ipomoea parasitica is a self-compatible annual while Ipomoea is a perennial frequently self-incompatible. The 2 species have obvious significant characteristics. Saish ji , There are approximately 50+ genera within the Morning Glory Family of Convolvulacea and although the flower shapes may 'tend' to apply to certain genera , the more you look into the Family , the more you will see that there is considerable overlap of features amongst species and subordinate taxa within various genera. [efloraofindia:111050] Re: Convolvulaceae Week :: Ipomoea hederifolia in Maharshtra
Gucharan ji , Thank you for appreciating whatever I have to share but I never refer to myself as an expert but as a 'constantly aspiring aficionado' and that is not false modesty...knowledge is a reverse pyramid (which raises more questions with each answer The more you know , the more you realize that you don't know) and in that regard there are no 'experts' but only 'constantly aspiring aficionados'. I am glad to share (and guide ) relative to what I am aware of but my knowledge is far from complete and never will be... The main difference between Ipomoea coccinea and Ipomoea hederifolia is the calyx and the pedicel which I shared in the PlantFiles (when I was still a member of that site) Here are some links Ipomoea coccinea - reflexed pedicels http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/139580/ http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/174039/ http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/688746/ Ipomoea hederifolia - pedicels remain erect http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/173738/ http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/789528/ http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/167703/ http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/81986/ read the lower portion in English ( I use google to translate into Spanish) where I address the awn and arista http://www.infojardin.com/foro/showpost.php?s=8e6211ae5ba5248ff679dbc95bb8f134p=5037636postcount=9 The Tropicos site lists Ipomoea coccinera L (which should indicate legitimate) as having 3 accepted names... http://www.tropicos.org/Name/8500974?tab=acceptednames Ipomoea coccinea http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/tax_search.pl Ipomoea coccinea - perform your own search because searches cannot be saved in url http://ipni.org/ipni/plantnamesearchpage.do Ipomoea rubriflora perform your own search because searches cannot be saved in url http://ipni.org/ipni/plantnamesearchpage.do Ipomoea rubriflora - lists Ipomoea coccinea as a synonym http://www.tropicos.org/Name/8501935?tab=synonyms I think it is confusing to have Ipoomoea coccinea listed as a legitimate species by both Ars-Grin and Tropicos and at the same time have Ipomoea coccinea L. listed as a synonym of Ipomoea rubrifloa. The PlantList may or may not be 'correc't on Ipomoea rubriflora since this particular case is confusing in comparison to the other reference sites...so, who can know for sure at this point (?!) There are often times when someone doing field research will need to insure/ preserve their funding and so minor differences which (from my perspective) may warrant a rank of subspecies , variety or forma , get assigned to the rank of a 'new species' (!)...and the 'discoverer' who is the only one who knows the exact location , continues to receive additional funding to continue to study the new species , which sometimes never truly sees the full light of day...and I have seen this 'phenomenon' occur too frequently... Ipomoea species rarely cross the species barrier (with rare exception , e.g., within series batatas) , although subspecies and lower taxonomic ranks will cross fertilize, so when I am in doubt, I try to obtain germplasm and perform my own crossings to get a 2nd opinion from the plants because the plants surely know the degree of relationship between themselves better than our human visual observations. I am fully aware that various degrees of compatibility and incompatibility exist within species and sometimes even lower taxonomic ranks , but if the supposedly different species cross fertilize , then they are in all likelihood not different species at all...the plants do not lie... I will believe that Ipomoea rubriflora exists when I see closeups of the relevant structures that differentiate it from Ipomoea coccinea and until that occurs I will be skeptical of Ipomoea rubriflora. I hope my contributions will prove to be of value. regards, Ron on Monday, March 12, 2012 4:27:51 PM UTC-4, Dinesh Valke wrote: *Ipomoea hederifolia * L. - *ip-oh-MEE-uh* or *ip-oh-MAY-uh* -- worm-like; referring to coiled flower bud *hed-er-ih-FOH-lee-uh* -- with leaves resembling *Hedera* (Ivy genus) - ... [efloraofindia:111067] Re: Convolvulaceae Week :: Ipomoea carnea Jacq. subsp. fistulosa in Thane and Pune
Hello, There is major difficulties concerning Ipomoea carnea subspecies fistulosa and Ipomoea carnea subspecies carnea. I had researched the supposed differences in the 'subspecies some years ago and found that there were significant misconceptions involved regarding the structure, location and behavior of the 2 supposed subspecies. The only difference is in the shape (measurement parameters) of the leaves and plants conforming to the leaf parameters can be found in populations supposedly consisting of only 1 subspecies. There are studies that indicate that other aspects like more vining or trailing habit for subspecies carnea has been shown to be dubious at best. The fact that both subspecies were found to be able to adapt and therefore inhabit both arid and wet areas in both the New and Old world tropics has been shown to be true and that both subspecies can exhibit upright or more of a trailing (vining) habit based on topographical setting and adaptation, not any feature that is hard-coded into the genetics. The information on the web from official sites concerning the subspecies is mostly related to subspecies fistulosa because that is what supports the old , antiquated studies...subspecies carnea is rarely located on the web , not because it is any rarer than fistulosa but because it doesn't fit the old studies... There is no difference in the seed characteristics of subspecies fistulosa or subspecies carnea. The supposed differences were based on early studies that utilized under-sampling and did not embrace a wide enough area of topography. I used to have all of the most important studies on my old hard drive but hardware self-destructed...although some of the more revealing studies were conducted in India (!) The USDA and others responsible for perpetuating the myths related to the 'subspecies' will not back off without losing face and political agendas may apply...some co-author papers with Monsanto ( major chemical company that manufactures / sells most of the herbicides to fight invasive exotic plants, and as the list of invasive grows , so does the amount of toxic chemicals used to combat 'invaders') ...my position is that the herbicides used do more long term damage to ecosystems than the over-growth of any plant species...enough said... I would like to go on permanent record regarding my position on the myths related to the Ipomoea carnea subspecies and that the *only* difference is a relatively minor leaf measurement parameter and no other physical or behavioral characteristic. regards, Ron On Monday, March 12, 2012 4:26:49 PM UTC-4, Dinesh Valke wrote: *Ipomoea carnea * Jacq. subsp. *fistulosa* (Mart. ex Choisy) D. [efloraofindia:111102] Re: Covolvulaceae Week - Bangalore - RA - Stictocardia tiliifolia - Spotted Heart
Raman ji, The Stictocardia posted is most likely either Stictocardia macalusoi or Stictocardia beraviensis and the only difference that I can locate between the 2 species mentioned is the length of the corolla. S. beraviensis (Vatke) Hallier f. - Corolla 4.5 - 5.5 cm long S. macalusoi (Mattei) Verdc. - Corolla 5.5 - 7 cm long The other characteristics of both of the above species is otherwise the same...corolla coloration can vary from a deep reddish to a lighter pinkish with stripes and yellow deeper in the corolla. Please post details of Stictocardia macalusoi to differentiate from Stictocardia beraviensis if anyone has accessas what I have is limited to distinguish between the 2 supposedly different species and consists of all features being exactly the same with the singular exception of the Stictocardia campanulata is supposed to be extremely similar to Stictocardia Stictocardia tiliifolia (as disputed by experts as may be found in The Flora of China) and purportedly distinguished by the glands on the underside of the leaves , although this is also likely not accurate as the presence of glands on the leaves is a feature of all Stictocardia and in fact Stictocardia means dots on the heart shaped leaves. The corolla of Stictocardia campanulata and Stictocardia tiliifolia has been described as being a white to pale pink and these 2 species may turn out to be local variations of each other... Stictocardia tiliifolia synonyms are as follows: Synonym:Argyreia tiliifolia Synonym:Ipomoea tiliifolia Synonym:Rivea tiliaefolia Synonym:Stictocardia tiliafolia Synonym:Stictocardia tiliaefolia I think George Staples will ultimately have to sort out all of the Stictocardia and Argyreia (which are very closely related to the Stictocardia) regards, Ron On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 11:13:21 AM UTC-4, raman wrote: I rarely take pictures of any plants other than trees. Leaves have some glandular spots on the upper surface, which inspired the common name Spotted Heart. In fact, the genus name Stictocardia also stands for spotted heart. Flowers are borne in clusters of 1-3 in leaf axils. Sepals are circular with a rounded tip. 1.2-1.8 cm long, much enlarged in fruit and then up to 4-5 cm long. Flowers are funnel-shaped, 8-10 cm long, reddish purple with a darker center, or reddish with a yellowish center. Ovary is hairless, filaments hairy at base. Easily identified by the capsule enclosed by enlarged sepals, 2-3.5 cm in diameter. Seeds 8-9 mm long, black to dark brown, velvety. The type of mistake that I have just cited above would not occur if the field researcher was properly instructed by someone who really knew the plants , like someone who has grown them and observed the development of all the structures from beginning to end , including what the tissue looks like when healthy and alive and what the structures look like if diseased, partially decomposed and / or completely dead. regards, Ron On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 11:22:12 AM UTC-4, Balkar wrote: I've shared Convolvulaceae Week : Ipomoea hederifolia from Dak Pathar https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-VR4QWVHiHTCEZ0sHhbktp7iCpsaRi78N8sb9hWdQNQ/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1-VR4QWVHiHTCEZ0sHhbktp7iCpsaRi78N8sb9hWdQNQ/edit Click to open: - Convolvulaceae Week : Ipomoea hederifolia from Dak Pathar https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-VR4QWVHiHTCEZ0sHhbktp7iCpsaRi78N8sb9hWdQNQ/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1-VR4QWVHiHTCEZ0sHhbktp7iCpsaRi78N8sb9hWdQNQ/edit Google Docs makes it easy to create, store and share online documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Gucharan ji, I have found those who quote Hortus to be mistaken on many Ipomoea species which require a wider knowledge (first hand is best) of the variations that do occur within the referenced species. I believe Hortus to be somewhat 'antiquated' and obviated by more modern references which are more frequently updated.and frankly I rarely reference it on Ipomoea as many updates have taken place since Hortus Third. This instance Ipomoea coccinea is reduced to synonym status and equated with Ipomoea rubriflora and as I had referenced in another thread on the subject of these epithets , even the current online references seem to be 'fuzzy' regarding the status of Ipomoea rubriflora and the relation to Ipomoea coccinea. There is only 1 ( not 'several' ) Internationally accepted legitimate name usually presented at International Botanical Congress... I suggest that at this point in time and space that Hortus Third be used with requisite grains of salt... with all due respect, Ron On Thursday, March 15, 2012 12:07:00 AM UTC-4, Gurcharan Singh wrote: I've shared Convolvulaceae Week: Ipomoea rubriflora from Dakpatharhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1YeD-GCELFw3UoL_PfUEkDCAYU1vUnYK6uO41Xwk8Usc/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1YeD-GCELFw3UoL_PfUEkDCAYU1vUnYK6uO41Xwk8Usc/edit Click to open: - Convolvulaceae Week: Ipomoea rubriflora from Dakpatharhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1YeD-GCELFw3UoL_PfUEkDCAYU1vUnYK6uO41Xwk8Usc/edit - trackedhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1YeD-GCELFw3UoL_PfUEkDCAYU1vUnYK6uO41Xwk8Usc/edit Ipomoea rubriflora O'Donell, Lilloa 29: 79 79 1959.
