Hello,

Lokhandi is a name that is used for various species of Ixora. This can be
Ixora brachiata however proper identifiaction will need flowers as foliage

 blue flowers. Are they fragrant?

 2. Is it Ixora brachiata? Are I brachiata flowers very fragrant?

Re: [efloraofindia:113526] Tree ID- tall tree behind my apartment

2012-04-14 Thread Mahadeswara
*The tree also looks like Hura crepitans*, the sand box tree. The tree
looks exactly similar to Ficus religiosa as the the leaves are almost
look alike of Ficus religiosa. But the distinguishing features are the
stems, flowers and fruits . The bole has spine like structures. Please
check the stem and report whether you have big spines and also watch for
the flowers and fruits.

Here is a much clearer snap I took just now- hope this helps to do the ID.

ficus religiosa completely shed all its leaves during some part of the

Ficus arnottiana is my *guess*. The tips of branchlets bear long
stipules (?); and fig-like (?) paired sessile structures found in the lower

Re: [efloraofindia:113531] Request Tree ID 083 - Lalbagh, Bangalore - RA

2012-04-14 Thread Satish Phadke
It is Carissa congesta.
Often these shrubs cover and grow around bigger trees too and the flowers
appear to arise from the tree.
The Carissa shrubs can grow around covering a large area and make an area
cool with good shade where a Tiger takes rest in scorchy summer season.

Interesting to look at these pictures.

When I saw this tree in Lalbagh, I thought the bush nearby has covered it,
so I thought the flowers and fruits are from the bush.
But tried to trace the branches and thought it was from the tree. I was
not 100% sure whether they are from the tree or the bush.

I will confirm this again when I go to Lalbagh again.

Some Albizia species indeed.
Can't place it. Looks close to Albizia odoratissima but the bark is not
yellow here.
Doesnt also look close to Albizia chinensis.
Eager to know about the species.

Re: [efloraofindia:113535] Seeking tips for macro photography

2012-04-14 Thread Satish Phadke
You have shared the same problem as I had when I purchased the same macro
lens.
Initially I also thought that life is easy for macro photography with this
lens. It is not fully true.
1) Small Aperture(2.8 or 3.2 etc.) will keep only a part of the large
flower like anther in focus while the flower becomes blur.
2) If the aperture setting is high say 15 or more all parts of the flower
will be in focus including some surroundings but to get adequate light the
shutter will remain open for a longer time and one can't keep the hand
steady for that long and the end result is burred pictured if the camera is
hand held. To prevent this you need to use the flash(Accepting some of its
limitations)
OR
If light is bright and good say a sunny bright morning and actual sun rays
not falling on flowers. You can get good depth accepting Aperture of 5.6 or
4.5 getting a reasonable shutter speed to prevent hand shake(and flower
shake due to wind)
This macro lens is a telephoto lens and one has to go away from the object
to get it into the field of vision.
I hope I have shared what I do with same lens as you are using.
Tripod is not practical in most field visits though it may be ideal.
