[IRCA] TPs for 8 April

2007-04-08 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Looks like the Easter bunny delivered more than just eggs this morning
as conditions were certainly vastly improved on yesterday. A fair
number of carriers, and they seemed to be pretty well all TPs rather
than DUs. Some decent audio from Japan on 594, 693 and 774 in the
1215-1230 period. They seemed to fade after that, but the Korean on 1566
came up to a good level by 1240, and provided good audio through out
1246 sunrise. Not great reception compared to the fall perhaps, but
I'll certainly take it after the last couple of mornings! Happy Easter
everyone.

73,

Nigel

2007-04-08 Thread Russ Edmunds

I have a short clip of what sounds very much like an ID for this
station. From here, given the condition of the frequency, this would be
an excellent catch, so if anyone is familiar with this station, please
contact me and I'll forward the clip.

Thanks-

[IRCA] Kansas logging

2007-04-08 Thread Joseph Miller
Hi Group Happy Easter

On 1660 kHz, for the last week or so, I have been hearing classical music,
which according to the NRC Radio Directory, can only be KXTR in Kansas City,
KS. This is relatively weak signal that tends to drift in and out, and I am
inside a circle of stations from North Dakota, Kansas, Kalamazoo Michigan,
Puerto Rico, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Obviously, I need a directional
loop antenna to sort them out.

Earlier attempts to confirm reception have been just as frustrating. Dialing
the station's phone number late at night connects me with an automated
attendant and no option to get to the on-air (if any) staff. Their website
has a listen now feature that doesn't work. Lastly, their website has a
did you like what heard? feature that only works for morning broadcasts,
but nothing for late at night.

The good news: I did get in a nice audio recording where their signal peaked
for about a half minute. Hopefully the station will be kind enough to answer
a letter with this audio enclosed.

I know, a lot of trouble to go through, but I am quite proud to say Kansas
#2 after hearing KKOW 860 for the first time last fall.

hi to all,
i've been getting a station underneath kdka,1020khz., in pittsburgh
which seems to be coming from the south. my quantum qx loop is getting
the strongest signal from the south x southeast.
the audio appears to be spanish and there is a morse insertion
in the broadcast every few minutes as if being used as a break in the
commentary.the format appears to be all talk as i've not heard music, etc.
i am only 50mi. south of pittsburgh and it is most unusual to get
any competition between kdka and another station, unless it's wbz or cfrb
both of which are north of here.they would also be off-frequency.
is there a mexican or cuban station broadcasting with something
approaching 50kw which isn't listed in the popular am listings?

To put in my two cents on the s/on's, s/off's, I recall somebody reporting

pale imitations of WARR. At that point the stn may have been a week old!

Somewhere on tape, I have a recording of that great KNBA sign-off
introducing KEX. Another one of my favorites was on the 1600 in Yuba City,
CA, explaining that the FCC required them to shut down at sunset, and done
in a way that seemed to say, If we could get away with it, this carrier

Back in the early 70's I would listen to KNBA-1190 a 250 watt daytime only
station in Vallejo, CA In the winter the horse race recreations would come
on right before the station would sign off. At the end of the KNBA's
sign-off announcement the announcer would say Stay tuned for KEX. as soon

as KNBA killed their carrier, KEX would be in as strong as ever. Just
checked my old log book and under 1190 I only have KEX, no KNBA. Sad that I

did not record them in the log book. Someone told me that KNBA make 90% of
their money on Sundays when they sold air-time to SF Bay Area ministers.

I acknowledge what you are saying, but I'm having a hard time with this.

FCC says KXTR
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?state=call=kxtrarn=city=freq=530fre2=170
0type=0facid=class=list=1dist=dlat2=mlat2=slat2=NS=Ndlon2=mlon2=
slon2=EW=Wsize=9

Nothing comes up for WDAF under the AM search page.

Entercom's website still shows KXTR
http://www.entercom.com/markets.php?marketid=8

I know the FCC's information is often outdated, but the company's own
website???

Anyway, thank you for your help.

Hi allIn the late 50's-early 60's , WBAZ 1550 Kingston, N.Y. 500
watts daytime ( now dark)..used to sign off with: Not by
choice, but by order of the FCC, WBAZ now leaves the air. Tune in tomorrow
at such and such time when we begin another broadcast day... followed
by the SSB. This little station was a rocker, and sounded good, very
professional for a time..at one point, in the winter, they had only:
two deejays: Richie Allen, and Bob Badger, (who had worked at WPTR in
Albany). They each had two air shifts a day., but in the winter, it was a
very short broadcast day.about 8-9 hours I guess too much competition
from WABC, WKBW ( in early mornings and late afternoons) plus a peanut
whistle signal probably led to their demise. Chris K4NHL near

[IRCA] logging for 4/8/07

2007-04-08 Thread Charles A Taylor
About time I start reporting my loggings, so here goes:

1340 WKEY Covington, Virginia. (Local WOOW-1340 totally nulled.
Out of oldies So Sad (by group whose name I don't
remember), and TOH ID: Good times and great oldies.
Keep it on WKEY, Covington. CAT/NC

Sure sounded like WXEY, but checks of FCC AM Query and Lee
Freshwater's list said WKEY.

Not in 1986 - 2001 NC DX Log, so brand new.

4th logging using new Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice Recorder with
direct patch via 20 dB attenuator to R8B. I intend to write a
product review for this sweet little recorder.

[IRCA] (OT) Classic Rock Sunday on WABV 1590 Abbeville, SC

2007-04-08 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Well, after running Pipeline Radio for several weeks, I finally stepped
behind the mic to jock' an hour long segment, live. Usually, the show is
done in 1 hour segments by 3 different presenters. I then get the 3 60
mintue Mp3s and load them into the automation.

They also air the same type of show, altho much more edgier, on 945kHz
Medium Wave transmitting from Riga, Latvia targetting the Baltics. (For you
techie geeks, I do believe 945 is somewhat directional and puts out 2.7 KW)

I have an mp3 encoded at 64K/24hz and about 30 megs if anyone wants to hear
it.

[IRCA] DEE's demise

David [Faulkner] and Crew,

I reported DEE's demise hoping someone would come forward with the date.
As you know, DEE published DX Monitor for many years. He also collected
many newspapers, and (I hear) had a few rare ones in his collection.

AS I heard it, there was a fire. With all that paper, I expect that DEE
broke a window and a fireball erupted before he could get out. In this
case, I would suspect he didn't have time to be rendered unconscious by
carbon monoxide poisoning before the fire got him.

In any case, it was a horrible ending for a great guy.

I remember him wearing a business suit to IRCA conventions.

Details from DX Monitor Vol 42 #24:

Riverside man dies in fire
BLAZE: It was aided by stacks of magazines and newspapers in his
home, an official says.
08:19 AM PST, on Tuesday, March 1, 2005
Special to The Press-Enterprise
A Riverside man who was a self-described pack rat was killed Monday
afternoon when a fire tore through the newspaper-and-magazine-stuffed
rooms of his Essex Street house. Neighbors identified the victim as
Donald Erickson. Firefighters said the blaze began somewhere in the back
of the house, in the area where Erickson's body was discovered. The
cause of the fire has not been determined. Firefighters break the
windows of a house on Essex Street in Riverside after a fire was
reported by neighbors Monday. Riverside Fire Department Division Chief
Tedd Laycock said the fire spread quickly, aided by ceiling-high stacks
of newspapers, magazines and other items. For some reason, he had all
the windows boarded up, Laycock said. Even when firefighters broke
through the boards, they were still blocked by dense stacks of boxes and
papers. Rows of file boxes labeled Magazines could be seen through the
windows from the street. Laycock said neighbors' calls to 911 came in at
12:52 p.m. Eight units responded. The fire was contained by 2 p.m., but
brown smoke continued to pour out of the roof from a fire deep within
the house. Thelma Cryst, who lived across the street from Erickson for
decades, said he was friendly but reclusive. He was a very quiet
person. I didn't know him too well. We would chitchat, but it was never
anything really personal, she said. He always helped out with anything
I needed, Cryst said, explaining that at Christmastime he would help
move her furniture to make way for her tree. She said Erickson had a lot
of medical problems. I've been concerned about him a long time, Cryst
said. He hasn't been happy for, really, a long time, she said, walking
out onto her driveway in socks and slippers. When your lease is up,
your lease is up. He called himself a pack rat, said Josie Herrera,
who lived nearby. But neighbors said they had no idea of the extent of
his condition until today. He was a nice guy, Herrera said, but he
was always locked in there. I got the impression that he didn't want
nobody checking up on him. Whenever neighbors went to check on him, she
said, He would say, 'I'm OK. I'm OK.' He didn't want nobody worrying
about him. By the time firefighters arrived, neighbors had already
broken open a door and a window. We didn't know what to do, Herrera
said. We wanted to help. But there was so much smoke. We couldn't.
Cryst said Erickson had been teaching a computer class twice a week. She
said he moved to the neighborhood in the 1970s.

KTAR moved its news-talk format from 620 to KTAR-FM 92.3 (ex-KKFR) at
the start of 2007, flipping 620 to sports. That gave them two sports
stations in Phoenix, and now it looks like they're going to take 860 in
  a different direction, I'm guessing.

A note on this one: WHIC lost its three-tower directional array on
Winton Road in Rochester last fall.

They've been operating since then on a temporary diplex at the WROC-950
site a couple of miles away, with what I believe to be 4.5 kW day ND,
750 watts night ND. The 750-watt night rig would have been what you
heard in Delaware, and it's arguable whether or not that's a better
catch than their 5 kW licensed night power would have been; there's a
pretty deep null in their licensed night pattern in your direction.

Construction is just getting started on a new three-tower site for WHIC,
off Commerce Drive in Henrietta, about 3 miles SW of the old site. I was
over there yesterday to see what's up, and they've cleared probably four
or five acres of land and put a road in. No sign of a ground system,
transmitter building or tower steel yet.

When it's all done, WHIC will be 3.7 kW ND-D, 5 kW DA-N, with a pretty
close replication of the old night pattern from Winton Road (but
significantly more distant from my QTH, which pleases me immensely; the
old 1460 was my closest local AM at just over a mile.)

It's not often you see a new AM DA go up, so I'll be following this one
closely over the spring and summer.

[IRCA] 1040 before and after sunset

2007-04-08 Thread bill kral
Pre sunset signal on 1040 with spanish language from
KXPD in Tigard Oregon wiped out ground wave from semi
local CKST Vancouver until powerdown from 2200 watts
when it vanished but a short time later repeated the
event on the night output of 200 watts as listed in
the Frequency Page.Still dropping in every few
minutes. No positive ID yet.I can't see spanish coming
in from anywhere else unless it is Conyers GA or
Lewisville NC but those guys are a bit out of range I
think. How about a real Mexican on 1040
coincidentally?---Bill in BC

Re: [IRCA] Auroras + Geo-Storms Coming to a DX-Shack Near You...maybe

2007-04-08 Thread willis
Thanks fellow swabby-

This explains why it is forecast that it will overcast and raining by
tomorrow.
If anything of importance is going to take place in the sky, it will
overcast and rain, at lease in Tennessee.

on April 9th and 10th. A solar wind stream is due to hit Earth, and the
impact could cause high-latitude geomagnetic storms.
