I have never had such clear reception of an Alaskan station -- my luck

There was a report on another list that the HAARP site in Alaska ran and
created an ionospheric enhancement. I wonder if this is a result of that?
Supposedly happened from the Gakona, AK site on 04 Oct.

[IRCA] TP for 5Oct09 from Victoria: Average

2009-10-05 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Only a minute to report before I head off to work. I really shouldn't
complain, as I'm listening to 774 right now with armchair copy at 14:30 with
French lessons from NHK2. Pretty amazing, as the sun is up and they're going
strong. Overall, seems like the JJ were back at better levels than the past
few days, but the CC were also there. Overall slightly down with more splatter
to contend with. Neat, wonder whether the FF lessons are from Canada? They
mentioned Canadien, Canadienne, but also Chinois, Chinoise. Full report
later. Of note, Guy's 1322 produced a het against CRI RR on 1323 today. 882
not quite strong enough to make anything out. CRI RR on 963 finally doing
really well. Walt

[IRCA] TPs Uninspiring on Orcas: Oct. 5

2009-10-05 Thread John H. Bryant
Generally at or below average here this morning... and just a tiny
het on 882 at 1400. The high band was there but noticeably below
recent mornings. About all that I found unusual was NHK1 on 837
dominating Taiwan Fisheries (first time this season, I think) and
the Russian-810 beating everyone else briefly about 1410 before North
Korea taking back over.

Still, I had 90% of the lower band covered with audio and mosta the
usual suspects up high. Why do I feel like I just kissed my
sister??? Ungrateful and jaded, I guess.

 Wow, some amazing reception!

how much do these Etons cost? LOL

I have had reception like this on old DX440's from Radio Shack,
ATS-803's, Drake R8 and modified E100's
You can buy an E100 for $50 now and add a bigger ferrite to
it or couple it to a loop.

The E1 retails for around $499 (maybe less)
and the benefit is: It has very good BW choices down to 2.3khz
with Passband tuning that works fairly well in AM and Sync mode
(although it is not true blue PB Tuning like the Drake)
and you can select the sideband.

In the case of most Alaskan receptions from the West Coast,
any radio could hear it - because it was utterly in the clear
after KFI dropped into its sunrise.

Alaskans and Hawaiians have always been my weak spot with
DXing. I do not think I have heard a Hawaiian on the
west coast since 1976.

According to DX-Guru, Patrick Martin, they do not get out
as well as they used to.

K200EA is apparently a typo for K21AO, which is one of two LPTVs that
KYUK owns in Bethel.

Here's my understanding of the IBOC situation: because electricity is
almost unbelievably expensive in rural Alaska - I've heard figures as
high as 50 cents/kWh (!) - some of the rural public radio AM stations
are looking for ways to reduce their power bills by turning off analog AM.

KIYU in Galena shut off its AM entirely earlier this year, replacing it
with a half-dozen 100-watt FM signals. I've heard some discussion from
other AMs up there about going digital-only on AM. Even if it means
providing listeners with replacement receivers, the savings on power
bills would apparently more than make up for that cost.

As a bonus, it would provide us with our first chance as DXers to see
what digital-only HD operation - literally IBOC in this case - might do
at a distance...

Not if KYUK supplies them with radios, it wouldn't.

Here's my back-of-the-envelope-over-lunch math: at 50 cents/kWh, and
assuming 50% efficiency on the analog transmitter, it's costing them $10
to power the 10 kW transmitter for every hour they're on the air. That's
$87,600 in annual power bills, which is a sizable chunk of change for a
small station like KYUK.

If they can get a PTFP grant to pay for a new digital transmitter (as
they very likely can), they could knock their power bills down to maybe
10% of what they're paying now - a savings of close to $80,000 a year.

That would go a long way toward buying inexpensive radios (which do
exist, and are available at serious bulk discounts to stations) for the
1190 households that exist in Bethel, and the 4226 total households in
the Bethel Census Area.

That's the theory, anyway...

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-5... Ultralight TP #95

2009-10-05 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

As John and Walt have reported, this morning's conditions were nothing to
shout about-- but I guess using a 9' box loop (in the back yard) does have
its advantages.

675-Hohhot (China) in Chinese was mixing with Vietnam's YL news announcer
at 1413 for a new Ultralight TP logging, the 4th new TP here since the new
9' loop was set up on Saturday. The 9' tuned passive loop seems to find
weak Chinese co-channels on many of the 9 kHz-splits that the smaller loops
were unable to receive (603, 621, 738, 891, 1053, 1143 etc.), so I'm very
happy with its performance so far. Now the challenge is to identify them all
(hopefully within this month, before the Chinese are gone for the season :-)

Who on Earth would be in Chinese on 640?

China was on 639 quite clearly - but that was synced out.

Re: [IRCA] [am] BOG experiments, week 2: Amazing results!

2009-10-05 Thread Russ Edmunds
I have used BOG's of 500' and they are indeed directional across the band. What
differs as you add length is the directionality and in some cases the strength
of signals. Between 500' and 1500' ( the longest I've had experience with ) the
pattern narrows, which translates into more rejection off the sides.

Unterminated, you'll see some signals off the end where you have the receiver,
but they'll be somewhat weaker than those from the far end. Adding a
termination at the far end will enhance that effect.

With a roughly 1000' BOG on the beach in New Jersey, aimed at 42 degrees ( //
the coastline at that point ) the vast majority of the stations heard using
that antenna were between 25 and 65 degrees. In this case there's very little
reasonably possible at less than 25 degrees, but at 65 - 70 degrees, signals
started to drop off. At 500' the beamwidth is about twice that based on a
southwest-terminated antenna.

Re: [IRCA] [am] BOG experiments, week 2: Amazing results!

2009-10-05 Thread Neil Kazaross
Taking a look at Jim's comparisons between the E-W BOG and the N-S BOG we
can see big differences once we figure out what some of his UNID's are. I am
familiar enough with domestic DXing to have a good idea what many are, but
looking here is also helpful http://topazdesigns.com/ambc/

Jim, you want to do your best to ID the situations where you have a major
difference between the two antennas. For example on 540 you have it lots
better aimed S..I assume this in DFW area. 550 again much better aimed N-S,
I presume this is KS. 570 again better N-S..one would expect DFW. 620 and
660 DFW's better N-S. Now look at 710 which is about due west of OKC. They
were gone on the N-S BOG. 820 is gone on the E-W BOG but a B on the N-S BOG,
this is WBAP from DFW etc etc etc all the way up to the high end where DFW's
on 1630 and 1700 are lots better aimed N-S.

Midband..your 1020 sb KOKP Perry and it was lots better N-S as was KRLD 1080
Dallas. 1320 you have a C rating aimed E-W, likely KCLI Clinton as it was
gone N-S.

Yeah..now you see how well BOGs work !!

From what you wrote, I don't suggest grounding the rx to the car ! I'd just

keep my hands off the rx when measuring strengths and let it float.

Also did you BOG's run from North to South ? ie aim South from the rx or
visa versa and also same question for E-W BOG.

73 and look forward to having all kinds of fun if you can phase 2 of them //
and stay in that park at least somewhat after sundown. .. KAZ

Re: [IRCA] HOT HETS

2009-10-05 Thread Bruce Portzer
I had slightly better luck driving to work this morning with the car
radio programmed for 9 kHz spacing. At 6:50PDT, I had quite good audio
from NHK's English lessons on 747. Tuning down to 693, I then had a few
snippets of the same voices in the CBU splatter. 981 had a screamer
het, but I couldn't pull any recognizable audio (pips, theme mx, etc) at
7 am. I may have had traces of audio on 1575 a few minutes after 7, but
it may have just been wishful thinking or bleedover from a domestic
channel. I also checked 594 1566 and 657 without success. 594 and 1566
had gurgling noises from something digital inside the car, which will
make it hard to ever hear JOAK or HLAZ.

After a weekend of DXing at Grayland, I couldn't bring myself to DX from
home this morning. It would have probably been anti climatic.

I really appreciate your filling in some of the likely ID's, which helps

Yeah..now you see how well BOGs work !!

I'm very pleased. The time so far as been very well spent.

From what you wrote, I don't suggest grounding the rx to the car ! I'd
 just
keep my hands off the rx when measuring strengths and let it float.

That's how I'm calling it, too.

Also did you BOG's run from North to South ? ie aim South from the rx or

My first BOG on 9/26 ran due west from my car. The 10/03 BOG ran due
