1200 WSML is sports now, so you didn't hear WSJS. 1200, 600 and another
frequency down there simulcasted for awhile but they ID'd as 600 WSJS. They
were split up awhile ago..

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-23

2012-09-23 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Compared to yesterday there was a TP-DXing improvement here, but almost all of
the recovery went to three Asiatic mainland big guns (972-HLCA, 1566-HLAZ and
1575-VOA). The Chinese on 603, 639, 738 (Taiwan), 936, 1044 and 1377 didn't
benefit much from the improved solar conditions, and the Japanese big guns
didn't sound so big, either. Like Dennis I noticed a huge signal in and out
from 1575-VOA, although even they (along with 972-HLCA and 1566-HLAZ) had
signals that went up and down like a roller coaster. In general, it was fairly
lackluster TP-DXing morning. Congratulations to Richard in Oklahoma for his
momentary reception of 747-JOIB audio-- quite an accomplishment during these
modest Asiatic conditions.

558 HLQH Deagu, S. Korea (Presumed) Fair music losing the battle with
  KPQ splatter at 1312; 603 // inaudible
594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Fair-good male Japanese conversation at 1310
603 Hulun Buir, China Poor-fair Chinese YL speech at 1342; no HLSA
  appearance this morning
639 CNR1 China Synchros Fair Chinese male-female speech after KFI
  fade at 1340
738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Rising above noise level at times with poor
  Chinese OM speech around 1313
747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Fair-good language lessons at 1325 in
Portland splatter; best NHK signal of the morning
774 JOUB Akita, Japan Good strength Japanese speech at 1303 but
  buried in KTTH splatter
828 JOBB Osaka, Japan Poor strength TOH fanfare at 1300
936 Anhui, China Poor Chinese YL speech rising above noise level 1339
972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Strong Korean male-female speech and
pop music in and out during sunrise enhancement 1245-1345
1044 CRI Jiangsu, China Poor Japanese OM speech and Chinese music
during external program at 1334
1053 Korean Jammer Not very vibrant compared to typical strength
1377 CNR1? Presumed the station with music fighting splatter at 1345
1566 HLAZ Jeju, S. Korea Very good Japanese religious program at
1314, but signals up and down
1575 VOA Ban Rassom, Thailand Very good Asiatic language speech by
OM at 1319 http://www.mediafire.com/?ur1jy8g1lg1gru1 Best
strength of season so far, but didn't last for long

[IRCA] Victoria TP for 23 Sept 2012: in the darkness

2012-09-23 Thread cafe-swl

As planned, power was cut to around 200 homes or more in my
neighborhood

between 4 and 7 AM -- very handy indeed.

I powered my Drake R8, Wellbrook antennas and Icom 703+ on
independent 12V "motorcycle" batteries - actually I think they
are 4 amp/hour UPS batteries but close enough.

As predicted, the silence and lack of ambient RF noise
and hash on all frequencies was stunning - reminiscent
of my days in the mid-seventies on 3.5 acres when the
only "noise" was the occasional buzz from a local 13KV/220V
step down transformer hundreds of yards away.

Anyway - the reason that our power was cut was that there
was a 12 bedroom house being moved - and in order to get
the house and wheels on the road, power lines had to be interrupted.
Initial predictions indicated a 2 hour cut in power... from 2 AM to 4
AM.

Thank heavens for delays.

What did not appear, however, were stellar conditions - I was at the
dials

at 11:35 UTC and apart from domestics and some hets on the 9khz plan
there was little to pick from.

By 12:05 UTC I decided to snooze on the sofa for a half-hour or so --
and I awoke again at 13:20 to...

567 - likely Japanese, 594 - Japanese, 603 - threshold audio,
621 - solid het, 747 Japan (best signal when I looked), 774 Japan,
792 - threshold audio, 828 - Japan, 891 - big het, nothing
else really standing out til 972 and even Korea on that frequency was
nothing special... and then little but hets all the way up to the
top of the dial.

My prime tuning was between 1320 and 1335 -- which may have been a tad
early

for the enhancement...
Was looking for some of Walt's Hawaiian stations but I should have had
notes

because I was totally on the wrong frequency!

Postscript: Last night after dark, drove out to the suburbs and checked
out
a park area behind a property (and house) that my wife and I are
looking at..

and yes, it was whisper quiet too.

[IRCA] TP DX this morning

2012-09-23 Thread Bruce Portzer
I missed the last 3 mornings due to a problem with the normally solid
Winradio software. I finally fixed it by deleting all of the program's
data files, as well as reinstalling the software. Now I get actual
recordings instead of dialog boxes talking about Exception Errors :)

From the posts that were made, it looked like I didn't miss much on
Thur-Fri-Sat morning. This morning, on the other hand, was relatively
productive for me. I'd call it the best so far this season. Lots of
promising carriers were noted today, but most didn't have quite enough
signal to produce audio. I continue to have a nasty buzz at a few
places on the dial, which masks some otherwise regular signals like 594
657 693 and 1206. But other parts of the band are relatively clear. I
still haven't found time to conclusively track down the source.

Good audio
972 - Korea - KK talk peaking 1258 and 1317
1566 - HLAZ - religious talk and music after 1300
1575 - VOA - Asian talk and piano music 1313+, weaker at 1330 EE ID

Fair audio
747, 774, 828 Japan - weather 1300-1320, then language lessons

Bits and pieces of audio
756 talk, presumed China
1035 CNR CC talk at 1332
1476 - again with two carriers, 1476.00 and 1476.08, and bits of talk
1557 trace audio in the splatter

Noteworthy carriers
567 594 657 693 738 846 864 909 918 927 936 945 954 963 981 1008 1044
1053 1062 1116 1134 1161 1188 1242 1269 1278 1287 1305 1314 1323 1332

[IRCA] TP Sept 23, 2012 / Victoria version

2012-09-23 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
(hmm looks like I sent "Sept 23" yesterday also. Sorry about that,
it really was the 22nd)

As Walt as already observed, an Asian morning, and one which was
almost exclusively populated with the regulars, along with some
second string Japanese, but with very little hint of anything deeper,
possible China on 1206 excepted. With the geomagnetic indices, slow
and decreasing solar wind of low density, little auroral activity etc
etc I would have expected a bit more from China given that we've
already heard a fair number this month.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK man and woman in JJ, talking and laughing at
1345UT.Hadn't been up to much earlier

774 JOUB finally got up to this level at 1336UT w/man speaking JJ
972 HLCA man talking in KK 1341, then singing a capella with other
men, repeated several times. Really quite a jolly station at this
time, as there was studio singing there a couple of mornings ago also.

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

747 JOIB EE lessons at 1334UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be

understood by a native speaker:

828 JOBB musical interlude //774 1335UT
1053 jammer 1334UT
1287 JOHR man in JJ at 1341UT
1566 HLAZ choral mx 1333UT
1575 VoA? man in SE Asian language at 1341UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

567 JOIK man talking //594 at 1343UT
612 DU sounding man talking at 1353 4QR??
873 JOGB man and woman talking //774 (EE lessons) 1344UT
891 JOHK man and woman talking and laughing //594 at 1346UT
954 man singing 1342; JOKR?
1206 woman talking, very murky at 1337UT. Something was at
1205.959kHz, but lots of other carriers including a fairly big big
Doppler? smeared carrier pretty much right on 1206, so maybe this wasn't China?
1242 very weak talk plus a hum on channel from someone at
1241.874kHz; nobody there on my mwoffsets list

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

864, 1143, 1323, 1377, 1422, 1503

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TP for 23 Sep 2012: All Asia

2012-09-23 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Checking the bands this morning, things seemed to have been on the
average side without anything new. HLCA 972 has to be the star
performer this year with really big signals, even better here than the
usual reliable Japanese powerhouse on 774. Last year's star
performer, the CNR 1 outlet on 1593 has barely made any appearances
this year. 891 was heard quite well today, but instead of Australia,
I'm quite certain that it was from Asia, likely Korea. In fact
nothing was noted from DU at all. Hawaii on 900 and 940 (with 900
Kahalui, Maui being the strongest) both were playing traditional
Hawaiian music before 14:00 UTC at very good levels. Another
observation has been the total lack of any dawn/post dawn enhancement
compared to other years. The band just dies just before, or
immediately after 14:00 here. No hint of anything from the sun, with
SF 125, A4 and K0. Not a bad morning, just nothing very exciting
either. 73, Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC
