now on 940. Tuned in to 940 and heard ESPN Radio programming. ToH ID was for
KFIG Fresno. (MF-CA)

1440 KMED OR, Medford 10/9 2330 ID "News Talk AM 14-40 KMED", a couple
local ads and then faded to KUHL. (MF-CA)

1450 KTIP CA, Porterville 10/10 0021 Fox News station with Tom Sullivan

Is that Brockport off channel? I heard a lot of ESPN mentions and mention
of Salamanca on that, and closer to 1589.774 I thought.

[IRCA] Alberta TP/DUs for 9 Oct 2012

2012-10-09 Thread Nigel Pimblett
For the first time in many years, all the discernable foreign DX
this morning was attibutable to New Zealand. None were that strong, but
I did have audio on 567, 819, and 882. 567 was the strongest, and
definitely New Zealand, 819 was presumed (as I eventually determined
yesterday's audio there was from NZ), and 882 was again presumed. As
I've never definitely logged a DU on that channel I'm guessing, but the
music I heard would fit Southern Star. Other channels with decent
carriers were 594 and 684. Although all the audio was below 1000 khz,
things weren't nearly as dead on the top half of the dial as they were
yesterday, with several DU carriers noted.

Hi Walt,

<<< I listened on both Saturday and
Sunday mornings from Rockwork south of Cannon Beach, OR using the FSL
broadband version. Saturday morning was very good, IMHO with plenty of
signals especially in the bottom half of the band. Sunday was not as good,
but still not bad. Unfortunately, I can't rate the mornings vs my
standards of BOGs or corner-fed loops, which I'd love to do. In any case,
I'd rate Saturday as a 7 or 8, and Sunday, a 5. >>>

Since Chuck, Bruce and Tom were also DXing at Grayland on both October 6th
(Saturday) and October 7th (Sunday), when all of the Perseus .wav files from
the weekend are reviewed, there may be some very interesting (and accidentally
obtained) information on the new Broadband FSL's performance at the Rockwork
cliff compared to the BOG-based DXing at Grayland. We had been planning
something like this coordinated operation in the future, but seem to have
stumbled across it this month by accident :-)

Besides what Gary has observed, I have to think that Point-no-Point is just
not that great of a DX site for TP DX. I listened on both Saturday and
Sunday mornings from Rockwork south of Cannon Beach, OR using the FSL
broadband version. Saturday morning was very good, IMHO with plenty of
signals especially in the bottom half of the band. Sunday was not as good,

I'd rate Saturday as a 7 or 8, and Sunday, a 5. I had thought that you
were off to Tofino, the real west coast of Vancouver Island. You still
have to contend with the Olympic peninsula to a large extent, and the full
length of V.I. to the NW. The only clear open ocean is to the W/NW, a 15
deg slice. Just my $0.02 worth! ..Walt

2012-10-09 Thread Bill Black
Hello,

For the cast few weeks I have been hearing a weak Spanish language station
under Radio Encyclopedia on 530. This morning between 0900 and 1000 UTC the
station was strong enough to overwhelm RE most of the time. The only other
station I can find that might be a possibility is Guantanamo at 1KW. Should I
assume this is what I am hearing or could there be other possibilities?

Thanks for any info.

Hello All,

The auroral conditions completely wiped out the Asiatic stations here this
morning, but it's obvious that there was highly unusual propagation from the
South Pacific. Around 1345 several DU frequencies (forming an NZ pattern)
managed moderately strong carriers-- even in this DU-dead zone. These were 594
(weak), 603 (weak), 657 (moderate), 675 (moderate) and 765 (weak). Of course I
knew very well who all of these NZ carriers were-- which made it even more
frustrating when this mediocre location didn't allow any of them to come up to
audio. It must have been a fantastic day at the coast... or even in Victoria!
738-Radio Polynesie in Tahiti was again the only South Pacific station to
manage fair audio here this morning (around 1403), repeating its performance
from yesterday. Congratulations to Tim Tromp in Michigan for again receiving
audio from 702-Sydney and 738-Tahiti, and to Richard in Oklahoma for his
reception of audio from 738-Tahiti on his PL-310 Ultralight. After Nick's
reception of audio from 603-Waatea and 765-Kahungunu yesterday, I imagine that
he had quite a New Zealand bonanza this morning.

As much as I would like to chide Gary with reports of widespread
multi-continental receptions on all bands and all frequencies, it was more of a
case of squeezing a dehydrated lemon into an empty martini glass. No one showed
up for the party... or any party for that matter.

If there could have been less than zero, today was it.
I jumped out of bed at 13:55 and sprinted directly to the SRFLA-50 and its
newly mated Sony 2010...
only to hear... domestics.

When it became abundantly clear that there would be no trans-oceanic reception,
I snooped around 900 and 940 looking for Hawaii - I have encountered Korean
programming on 900 while at Jordan River and maybe some this morning - but
pretty sure it was not Hawaii.

Within 5 minutes it was confirmed - the only whines, whistles or squeals were
between my middle-aged ears.
Funny that in 4 days of abandoning amateur radio in favor of 100% medium-wave
listening, I have been rewarded with nothing but punishment.

Another day tomorrow.

Colin lives in Victoria... in the shadow of DXers like Walter and Nick... using
radios like the Sony 2010 and antennas built by people like Gary Deb

[IRCA] ULR DX.....Last Nights AURORA CATCHES.....4 New Stations for the ULR Log!!!

2012-10-09 Thread Robert Ross
Hello Guys:

Well the AURORA OPENING Last night didn't really get going until about 2 AM
EDT, but when it did it spewed out some interesting Stuff!! I was able to ID 4
NEW STATIONS for the ULR LOG, and 4 New Ones at one sitting is always a good
thing!! There were lots of Freqs that had stations UNDER the Big Guys, but many
of them I was not able to ID.

I was hoping that there may have been a few more DXers up at that time to take
part in the FUN...but so far it seems like I was one of the only guys tuning
around and hearing this stuff??? Must have been getting their Beauty Sleeps!!
HAHHAA...Being Retired does have it's advantages I guess.

The Aurora was still Present right up to SUNRISE herewith 1360 WMOB still
blasting in at 0700 AM EDT!!

Heard many Spanish Stations as well...but concentrated on the Domestics...

Hopefully the Aurora will hang in there again tonight and produce some more
interesting catches???

Here's the Official Logs for the New Stations I heard. Very Happy to add these
to the ULR LOG!!

RADIO USED...SONY SRF-T615 Ultralight BAREFOOT (In my
Basement Family Room 5 Feet Under Ground!!!)

ULR LOG TOTALS are now1,018 Stations Heard

Thanks too for the info on these Guys running Daytime Power at night as well. I

Re: [IRCA] Sat-Sun-Monday - TP Oct 8, 2012 / Jordan River Pacific version: comment

2012-10-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
It's still a pretty nice DU water path to relatively low
mountains; You're right, it is only open to the Pacific via the
strait from about 270 to 290 degrees. The DU bearings of 220 to
270 degrees are water path for the last 25 to 45 km, but there is a
chunk of Washington's Olympic peninsula blocking the path for a ways
beyond that. I thought the water path was the important part, and
using Beverages just a few miles further up the coast, we heard some
pretty serious DUs many years ago, so don't know what the problem is
now. It was pretty dead in July when I tried it out last with just
an ALA100 though.

best wishes,

Nick

Gary:

I won't say "Richard in Oklahoma" heard audio from 738-Tahiti. There was too
much slop from nearby 740-KRMG (25 kW), and probably KTRH, to know whether I
heard anything
other than a het on 738 kHz. Sadly KRMG goes to 50 kW at 1230 GMT thus
blocking further reception 738 here each morning.

Hello All,

The auroral conditions completely wiped out the Asiatic stations here this
morning, but it's obvious that there was highly unusual propagation from the
South Pacific.
Around 1345 several DU frequencies (forming an NZ pattern) managed moderately
strong carriers-- even in this DU-dead zone. These were 594 (weak), 603 (weak),
657
(moderate), 675 (moderate) and 765 (weak). Of course I knew very well who all
of these NZ carriers were-- which made it even more frustrating when this
mediocre location
didn't allow any of them to come up to audio. It must have been a fantastic day
at the coast... or even in Victoria!
738-Radio Polynesie in Tahiti was again the only South Pacific station to
manage fair audio here this morning (around 1403), repeating its performance
from yesterday.
Congratulations to Tim Tromp in Michigan for again receiving audio from
702-Sydney and 738-Tahiti, and to Richard in Oklahoma for his reception of
audio from 738-Tahiti on
his PL-310 Ultralight. After Nick's reception of audio from 603-Waatea and
765-Kahungunu yesterday, I imagine that he had quite a New Zealand bonanza this
morning.

2012-10-09 Thread neilkaz
While I know that this is not politically correct to say this, WMOB is one
station that can be called a cheater. They intentionally have run day power at
night for most of the past two decades and I chatted with a DXer who spoke to
their owner about this.

This is why they've been heard in Europe. I believe they've been fined at least
once for this. 73 KAZ

Actually, I believe that 765 wasn't that uncommon on the Vancouver

Patrick remembers; bound to be a QSL!). Even heard it at home a
time or two, using unamplified box loop and transmogrified HRO if I
remember right. But, propagation changes over the years it seems.

These guys were commonly observed to be running day power at night last season.
How can I tell with almost 100% certainty? Well simply by catching them during

[IRCA] TP Oct 9, 2012 / Victoria version

2012-10-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Things are still decidedly auroral, and mostly New Zealand (I think,
because IDs were hard to come by). Quite a lot of thunderstorm QRN,
but the worst of the local noise held off until 1421UT today. The
other unusual observation was the number of weak audios with big
carriers. I usually find 612, for example, to start to show audio
even when the carrier is still fairly low level. Today, it needed
some considerable beef in the carrier before it was audible.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

none

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

none

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be

understood by a native speaker:

612 4QR woman talking //774 at 1416UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

531 slow vocal mx fighting with the local noise 1357UT and onward, no
talk on the hour; 531 PI?
603 man talking 1409UT, likely Waatea, as had a vaguely Tagalog
cadence to it; strong carrier, poor audio

702 man talking, very weak, various times, never able to nail down a parallel
738 sounded like DU EE by man 1411UT, but no parallel available
(things were very erratic)

756 man talking 1408, no parallel available
774 3LO, //612 above 1416
882 woman talking at 1400, then bits of instrumental mx. Southern Star?
909 laid back choral singing 1419UT; just about the time I brought up
the Southern Star webstream, the nastier local noise kicked in at
1421UT and pretty much killed it.

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

567 891 1098

best wishes,

[IRCA] Surplus Russian Ferrite TP's/DU's/DA's/TA's for 10-9

2012-10-09 Thread cafe-swl

As much as I would like to chide Gary with
reports of widespread multi-continental receptions
on all bands and all frequencies, it was more of
a case of squeezing a dehydrated lemon into
an empty martini glass. No one showed up for the
party... or any party for that matter.

If there could have been less than zero, today was it.
I jumped out of bed at 13:55 and sprinted directly to
the SRFLA-50 and its newly mated Sony 2010...
only to hear... domestics.

When it became abundantly clear that there
would be no trans-oceanic reception, I snooped
around 900 and 940 looking for Hawaii - I have encountered
Korean programming on 900 while at Jordan River and
maybe some this morning - but pretty sure it was not
Hawaii.

Within 5 minutes it was confirmed - the only whines,
whistles or squeals were between my middle-aged ears.
Funny that in 4 days of abandoning amateur radio in favor
of 100% medium-wave listening, I have been rewarded with
nothing but punishment.

Another day tomorrow.

Colin lives in Victoria... in the shadow of DXers like Walter
and Nick... using radios like the Sony 2010 and antennas
built by people like Gary Debock...

Fair audio heard this morning from 702 Sydney for a few minutes around

from 7:30am-7:30pm daily. 738 also had some audio at times and
strong-ish DU carriers noted a good hour before my sunrise all over the
lower band. 747 came close to audio a few times, ditto for 657 but that
one still eludes me here. Maybe some more stuff will be discovered on

It was a pretty unusual morning Gary, good solid aurora. The
difference between my reception and yours on the coast was probably
the strength. These here really sounded like DXbarely there,
fighting for recognition.

On my 828 unID, it appears quite possible that it was Radio
Trackside, as per the network's website, they are supposed to run
until 4AM NZ time. If my arithmetic is correct, using UTC+13, that
translates back to 1500UTC, so my 1400+ reception could quite likely
have contained racing. I wasn't fast enough on the draw to find the
webstream, hi.

Re: [IRCA] ULR DX....AURORA ALERT!!! 1360 WMOB Mobile, ALABAMA @ 212 WATTS!!!

2012-10-09 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I logged WMOB in Northernwestern Mississippi back in 2003 and 2004 quite
often. I hate to label them as cheater, but Rob.. it's very likely they
were on a full 5KW Daytime power.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] ULR DX....AURORA ALERT!!! 1360 WMOB Mobile, ALABAMA @ 212 WATTS!!!

2012-10-09 Thread Rick Dau
WMOB is a station that, over the course of some 20+ years, has cheated OFTEN
with 5 kw non-D, so it most likely wasn't the 212 that they should have been
running when you heard them.  They have, more or less, become a reliable
indicator of auroral conditions on the MW band.  I'm really surprised the FCC
hasn't cracked down on them.
