Good crowd! It was nice to meet new folks and to swap lies. Great to see
familiar faces and renew ongoing discussions. From comments heard around
the room, the car tours and station visits were ‘okay.’ The tech talk
sessions had lots of good pics and video and some new understandings...and
the audio was a disaster. (Murphy had been sleeping in the meeting room when
we checked out the A-V Friday but was wide-awake Saturday morning.)

Dinner was excellent; the post-munching remarks by Kansas City’s premier
newsman Dan Verbeck were impactful and heartfelt and gave those of us jaded
with radio some reasons to be more optimistic (at least about radio news).

It was moving to me to see how we as a group helped our Blind friends
navigate and interpret.

The “D-KAZ-wiki group” from IRCA (Hall-Patch, Kazaross, Whitacre,
Durenberger) erected and operated a full-blown D-KAZ antenna in the back
yard (a thanks to the hotel for their tolerance of our temporary
playground). We were even able to attract veteran DX-er Glenn Hauser...who
was kind enough to avoid shaking his head over our layout.

(Clean) audio and pics/videos from the activities will be posted shortly.

Cheers!

Mark Durenberger

When I lived in northern California, Radio Rossii on 279 was fairly dependable
and a good friend.  It didn't interfere with NDB chasing, was well programmed
and the announcer was sooo mellow.  The other frequencies were hit or miss, but
always fun to chase.  After moving to Tucson, 279 was the only one that was
able to make the trip and was sporadic at best.  Time and radio move on.

Well, not exactly a dozen on LW in Siberia, Colin:

153 was Komsomolsk, Khabarovskiy Krai
180:  Petropavlsovsk-Kamchatskiy
189:  Belogorsk, Amurskaya oblast
234:  Arman, Magadan
243:  Razdolnoe
261:  Chita (very rarely heard)
279:  was Yuzno Sakhalinsk, usually the strongest (and closest to us).

234 and 243 were the first to disappear, followed by the others.

Thanks to all involved in organizing and ‘pulling off’ the joint convention in
Kansas City. It was a lot of work and everyone I spoke with enjoyed it A LOT!

Though I did not help in any way with erection or de-erection of the DKAZ I did
enjoy watching TP/DU carriers floating down the screen of Nick’s teeny-tiny
laptop this morning. I wish more folks could’ve been there to see it. Pretty
convincing evidence of why all MW DXers need a DKAZ of some size in their own

[IRCA] September 11 2016 PART Three (of 3) - West Coast TP's

2016-09-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
900 - 1600 Khz

This morning did not belong to the upper band (and neither did
yesterday...) but with a little
patience and digging, some nuggets were retrieved.

909, 918, 927, 936, 945khz... carriers and little else during the 12:20
until 13:40 session.

954 khz Almost always TBS Tokyo JOKR and today no exception - higher energy
music and talk -
and you can tell by the fact that the female on-air personalities sound 16
years old and giggle a lot.

963 Khz - if you hope to hear Russian on medium wave these days, this will
be one of the first -
and ironically, it is from China. Come to think of it, Russia on
medium-wave is a sad shadow of
its former self. As little as 5 - 7 years ago there were a dozen high
powered Russian long wave
stations in Siberia that would put bone crushing signals into the North
West - truly staggering levels
of signals. 279 Khz being one good example. The electric bills got too
high. They turned them off.
Anyway - at great levels at 13:27 moments before the band started its
sunrise death pangs.

972 Khz KBS S. Korea - at 1500KW (max) this is easily the first S. Korean
station you will here.
IN for the entire morning session with chorale/christian sounding music and
talk.

1017 Khz JOLB Fukuoka, Japan - what I consider one of the more dominant and
easily received Tier-2
NHK2 stations. At a decent level around 1323 UTC

1053 Khz S. Korea Jammer - built for one purpose - to play something that
"sounds" like "Ditty ditty ditty ditty..." over and over again
with no variation - and much to my surprise, it sometimes fades revealing
either Japan underneath or the DPRK station its
trying to flatten. In this morning for the entire shift - but with JJ
coming to the surface every 5 - 10 minutes or so.

1143 Khz China (t) with Chinese opera - as opposed to more the poppy stuff
that Taiwan Fisheries plays - this is a classic
battle royale channel. Either one can appear.

1179 Khz UNid - 12:53 with what sounded like Chinese opera.

1242 Khz NBS JOLF - one of the top ten Japanese stations to usually appear
and top 5 among the "commercial" stations. 12:51 UTC

1287 Khz JOHR Hokkaido HBC - arguably the best sounding Tier 1 commercial
stations in Japan - often at absurdly good levels on the W/NW Flag
definitely in the category of "always there when the band is open..." and
often among the last to leave when sunrise sets in.

1566 Khz HLAZ (FEBC) - likely the consistently loudest Asian signal on the
band- with a couple of different antenna patterns - and at 250kw
packs a wallop and a great "split" for good penetration into the North
American continent. When in Hawaii, this appears early and stays late -
here on the west coast, it'll hang around regardless of the suns position
in the sky.

1575 Khz VOA Thailand - at a million watts, not quite the thumper that you
would expect. Almost always second fiddle to 1566 and always with Lao and
S.E.A. languages and familiar VOA interval signals on the hour.

1593 Khz CNR (t) China likely the chorale music at 13:32 as the band began
its shut down. This is a good window for Japan quite often later in the
season.

Receivers - Drake R8 / AOR 7030+
Antennas - W/NW Flag with FLG100 Wellbrook Head and "Newell made" Remote

If conditions are really super blazing good, I'll grab the umbrella and put
on my coat that's good for the rain and run out, otherwise on down for the
count for two days

Re: [IRCA] My First TP AM DX Logs!

2016-09-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
I don't doubt it actually - you are 1/2 the distance to the DX that we are.

You should be able to hear Korea on 1566 so loud that you would swear it's
next door.

I guess, to trot out that old yarn... "Paul can see Russia out his back
window..."

[IRCA] September 11 2016 PART TWO (of 3) - West Coast TP's

2016-09-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
This mornings hour long "average" session gave me the luxury of spending a
bit more
time on each channel - finessing out a little more; drawing out the energy
and developing the channels potential much like
a black & white photo in the finishing tray... anyway.

Part Two -

747 JOIB Hokkaido Japan - it owns this channel and although often harassed
by 750 Portland, this is likely the #3 most
heard Japanese medium wave signal next to 774 and 828Khz - always in JJ
often with English or Chinese lessons. Reliable as gravity
and audible all morning.

756 AUS or NZ - well heard at 13:17 UTC with stodgy low modulated English

765 Japan (t) - could have been JJ but also could have been something else.
Quite good at 1314 UTC and
always a good carrier w/ near audio. A channel to watch as the season
progresses.

*774 JOUB Akita* - (*Top Performer*) at 500kw from Akita, this monster is
never inaudible on the flimsiest of mornings - often S9 armchair
pushing what ever is on 770 casually aside - the top Japanese station and
easiest to hear inland. All morning.

793 AUS 4RN (t) - most of the session this signal is struggling to get its
head above the water -- and when 612 and 1116
start to shine, so does it. One of the more common Aussies - and pr. fr.
audio most of the session.

819 DPRK - little audio but worrying 820 constantly with a solid growl.
Gets louder as the season progresses.

828 JOBB Osaka NHK - at 300kw this is also one of the "always there" on an
average morning - no exception today. One of the 1st TP's I heard
on the DX150B in 1975 and still a winner on this channel. This is the 2nd
most likely Japanese station to be heard well inland.

846 One of the "jumble channels" just burbles, gurgles and growls this AM -
This is something of an NHK and Chinese graveyard channels
with dozens of possibilities... but just growls today.

855 DPRK - usually home to a growling and often distorted government
station - but today just growls and burbles.

864 NHK/KBS On good mornings this is a great place to park for lower
powered NHK stations or KBS - this morning was
more on he NHK side of the house with a JJ YL chatting at 13:26 UTC --
pretty much the peak moment for LSR enhancement.

873 NHK JOGB Kumamoto - most notable by its absence - keep in mind I DX
wholly in real time - No SDR in use and no playback
and apart from having the NHP Radar running at all times, this is live and
seat of your pants. Good carriers when passing by no audio to
speak of.

891 Thailand (t) Likely the SEA Lang at 1309 - in Hawaii this is, by and
far beyond, one of the loudest signals on the dial - not so much
here slightly inland.

END OF Part Two.

I am offering a bit more fleshing out of the details as much to impart some
of the excitement and to encourage others to give
Trans Pacific DXing a bit of a whirl. TP DX as any Western resident will
attest, is more onerous than TA DXing, in my honest opinion
more challenging. The distances are greater and the DX window is
significantly more narrow than the TA window. And you need to get out of
bed unnaturally early!

Just saying.

Receivers - DRAKE R8 + AOR 7030+
Antennas W/NW Flag with DXer.CA produced VACTROL + WELLBROOK ALA100 (N/S)

[IRCA] September 11 2016 PART ONE (of 2 or 3) - West Coast TP's

2016-09-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
Lacking the energy of yesterdays session, the opportunity to buckle down and
do a bit more in-depth channel by channel analysis presented itself.

My session started around the same time (12:20 UTC) - and after a quick scan
of the NHP fish-barrel radar system on one of my phones in the kitchen
and some pre-dawn ablutions, I dove into what would be a sedate but
productive turn at the radio dial.

Here are the by-frequency accounts of what I heard.

529 Alaska High-Level AERO forecasts boxing in the TIS jumble
on 530 while a series of semi-audibles took flight on 531. This is one, if
not the
only, frequency on the AM dial that has a standard channel boxed in one
both sides.

558 Khz Korea - more frequently towards LSR and often parallel sounding to
the usually louder 603 - on/about 1315. At times crystal clear with KK
romantic pop.

567 Khz JOIK NHK Japan - was the boss here the entire session. Likely one
of the top 5 this morning - never inaudible. And if this was a nod to Paul
in Galena, Alaska, this would be one of the most likely JJ stations you are
going to hear - a top tier performer

576 - 585 UNID From time to time burbles of intelligence but nothing that
stood out and nothing that got stronger as LSR approached

594 JOAK NHK - unfailing during entire session (Another top 5 most heard JJ
stations) occasionally with something else underneath it.

603 KBS Radio Happy FM S. Korea - now among the most heard S. Korean that
is not "super-powered" with yearning KK vocals and the occasionally chirpy
convo - here almost entire session

612 4QR Brisbane AUS - Rose to armchair heights from 1315 on through to
around 10 minutes pre-LSR (around 1340) with typical docu-commentary style
news. For hunters of their first Aussie, this could well be it.

621 DPRK Pyongyang - this brute located in the "somewhat unstable" nation
of North Korea is always hammering at 620 and occasionally reveals typical
Korean ranting in a style only heard within the confines of this basket
state. 1250 - 1310 UTC

639 Various - in an often unholy jumble of stations some CC occasionally
rises here -
but usually saves itself for sweeter times further into the season.

657 DPRK - At an alleged 1500KW (I imagine less than half of that...) this
2nd day in a row appearance with its stock-in-trade sabre rattling
harangues - occasionally 12:50 through 13:10

666 JOBK NHK Osaka - at times in Japanese talk between 1320 and 1325 when
some second tiers started appearing (this is not really one of those at
100kw) but if this one is coming in nicely, lesser powered ones may follow.

675 Hanoi, Vietnam - frequently between 12:50 and 13:10 at numerous passes
- often at good levels but suffering from lower than average modulation.
Likely the number one picture for those hunting for Vietnam.

702 Australia - 2BL Sydney - likely the stuffy sounding Aussie OM chatting
- getting knocked about by CBC 690. I often switch in the
Ratzlaff/Misek/Lankford Phaser and knock down 690 so I can catch Japan on
693 and affect better listening on 702 - but not this morning.

738 Taiwan/China - often at pretty good levels but getting showered with so
many sparks from 730 Vancouver to render this channel useless - again, a
PHASER null would open it up - but often nulling the Northerly pests also
nulls the DX.

This is 1/3 of my report - not wanting to risk the 33K limit of this list
- going to cut off now -

Please enjoy this brief YouTube video from this morning -

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-11

2016-09-11 Thread d1028gary
What sounded like a promising band in the predawn darkness tapered off somewhat
with increasing daylight, as many second-tier TP's failed to get any sunrise
enhancement boost. A few stations like 657-Pyongyang and a presumed 738-BEL2
ended up slightly stronger than yesterday, but mostly it was a Japanese and
Korean big gun show.

In the predawn darkness at 1250 there was a good variety of promising carriers
on 603, 657, 738, 936, 1035 and 1044, but only 657 and 738 seemed to get any
sunrise enhancement boost. The Japanese and Korean big guns on 594, 693, 747,
828, 972, 1053 and 1566 were at moderate strength in and out throughout the
session, with the bizarre singing practice on 972-HLCA back for another TP
season. 657-Pyongyang's Korean male shouter reached a fair level at 1315,
followed by the Korean female shouter at 1320. The 1053-Jammer (on an equal
intellectual level) managed its best signal of the new season at 1325 (very
good), while a presumed 738-BEL2 finished up the session with fair-level
instrumental music at 1330 Overall the session was somewhat of a letdown after
yesterday, but not too bad in consideration of the modest solar predictions for
this season.

657 Pyongyang BS Pyongyang, N. Korea Korean male shouter at 1315; somewhat
stronger than yesterday (unfortunately)
https://app.box.com/s/dvjwww49xx36frnqm201xdp0si7lmkkj

738 BEL2 (presumed) Penghu, Taiwan Instrumental music at fair level at 1326
(matching BEL2's format); best signal of the new season

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] My First TP AM DX Logs!

2016-09-11 Thread Earl Higgins via IRCA

Could the "1321" actually be Vancouver-1320?
The others all sound like Japanese to me.
Can you use BFO to get more accurate frequency readings? That would certainly
help in some cases. Remember also that most all Asians are going to be on 9 kHz
multiples. It's easy to calculate in your head because the digits of any given
9 kHz multiple, when added together, will be a multiple of 9. So for example
your "955 kHz" is most certainly actually 954 because 9+5+4 = 18 which is a
multiple of nine.

However, I don't know who any of the stations all. They were all in an Asian

figure out what they are saying or what stations these are.

I could be off a kilohertz or two on some of the stronger signals, they were so
strong it was hard to "Center" them
What stations are these? Where are they from? What's their power output and
patter?

[IRCA] KANSAS CITY DX CONVENTION

2016-09-11 Thread Mark4
Good crowd! It was nice to meet new folks and to swap lies. Great to see
familiar faces and renew ongoing discussions. From comments heard around the
room, the car tours and station visits were ‘okay.’ The tech talk sessions had
lots of good pics and video and some new understandings...and the audio was a
disaster. (Murphy had been sleeping in the meeting room when we checked out the
A-V Friday but was wide-awake Saturday morning.)

Dinner was excellent; the post-munching remarks by Kansas City’s premier
newsman Dan Verbeck were impactful and heartfelt and gave those of us jaded
with radio some reasons to be more optimistic (at least about radio news).

It was moving to me to see how we as a group helped our Blind friends navigate
and interpret.

The “D-KAZ-wiki group” from IRCA (Hall-Patch, Kazaross, Whitacre, Durenberger)
erected and operated a full-blown D-KAZ antenna in the back yard (a thanks to
the hotel for their tolerance of our temporary playground). We were even able
to attract veteran DX-er Glenn Hauser...who was kind enough to avoid shaking
his head over our layout.

(Clean) audio and pics/videos from the activities will be posted shortly.

Cheers!

Mark Durenberger

Not quite the oomph of yesterday.
Still, finding the occasional treat under some quieter frequencies.

Somewhat more sedate than yesterday. Lots of 1st tier JJ/KK and a smattering of
DU.

LSR still 1 hour away.
