1215, yes, that onehas been putting a fairly steady carrier into
Victoria for the last couple of hours, not developing any further
though. Have heard other carriers on 909 1098 and 1458, but weaker yet.

[IRCA] TP 13 Feb Victoria version

2017-02-13 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
There was low band action between 1100 and 1200UT this morning
according to the signal strength monitor (NetSDR not recording yet),
but things had mostly faded out by 1300UT, with a small sunrise
liftand then there was HLAZ, which didn't rouse itself from
slumber until well after local sunrise at 1520UT, peaking about an
hour later, and generally showing audio traces almost continuously
until after 1700UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ woman in Korean 1622UT, with another woman agreeing;
returning at nearly this strength at 1640UT with choral music.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

the above passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

612 pop music 1510UT, likely 4QR

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 man mumbling 1521UT, same strength west and north Flags, so likely JOAK
702 man and woman talking, DU English inflection 1516-7UT
738 woman talking 1525-6UT, definitely stronger on west Flag, likely 2NR
774 JOUB man and woman talking 1455UT, seemed //828
828 JOBB pretty low level man and woman talking 1459UT, pips 1500UT
1116 man talking, DU English inflection 1522UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

747 972 1134 1242 1287 1575 seemed to be Asian;1098 likely DU

something going on with the xmtr, for certain...

Kevin Redding on the ABDX listserver noted them rather strong at his QTH (245
air miles from Atlanta) a few nights ago. If they're stuck on 28 Kw at night,
this would give a lot of DXers in the Midwest and points further west a good
shot at adding a new logging from Georgia to their totals (along with perpetual

You're a broadcast engineer, if I remember right.

I'm a volunteer with KBFG, an LPFM in Seattle. We're trying to hook up with the
are emergency services networks. To do that, we're seeking a small grant. The
facility where our transmitter will be has a great backup generator (2 days
worth, carefully maintained as it is a retirnement home with people that depend
on electricity).
So the question is: will we get extra points in our grant search because of our
backup power? Or do so many broadcasters have backup power that it is not a
factor? I know some of our local guys have backups but don't know the overall
picture.

Hi Richard,

Yes, phasing two FSL's together this way to provide cumulative gain really does
boost up TP signals, but like all FSL operations the tuning adjustments are
razor-sharp, and some practice is needed to become skillful. As you probably
know already (from tracking down Australian DU's in Oklahoma) there is a
learning curve involved in FSL tuning, and there is another "learning curve"
involved to master this cumulative gain system.

[IRCA] World radio day!

2017-02-13 Thread R. Colin Newell
Happy World radio day everyone!

Dig this: yesterday I put up an end fed 80 through 10 meter shortwave antenna
array - it has 4 fly points from 3 bamboo poles (ea. 25 -35ft high) and a birch
tree.

I use it with a 10-watt ICOM all band transceiver and a 100-Watt Kenwood all
band transceiver.

Yesterday I checked into a B.C. Wide emergency net on 3729 KHz running 10 watts
-

The antenna even tuned up on the 160 meter band (1820 KHz) which blew my mind.

Radio rules!

I finally hooked up with Neil "Kaz" this weekend. Neil was kind enough to
help me fix a couple of antennas that got beat up with high winds Sunday
(beverage and pennant). We were able to snag KNTS 1680 out of Seattle
phasing a K9AY and a pennant through a NCC-1 phase box during Seattle
sunset. Phasing the two allowed us to drop a nice null on KRJO out of
Louisianna. As a newbie to medium wave dxing, Neil was kind enough to share
some tips on how to better use my radio shack (predominately amateur radio)
to work medium wave. Thanks Neil!
