[IRCA] CHFO 1350 Gatineau

2019-03-12 Thread Eric Floden
We have been in Ottawa for a week now, and not a sign of them. (I was
extra keen to hear them last week as I was filling out a radio ratings
diary.) When we were here october to January, they were usually on and a fun
listen. (I still have CJEU 1690 to listen to French music and gab.)

A quick search shows no sign of an internet presence, or announcement of an
interruption. Years ago, I would have telephoned them, but my French is now
not so good...

[IRCA] Gatineau AM

2018-10-19 Thread Eric Floden
Listening this week, both 1350 and 1670 are not working well, maybe left
over from last month's weather event. Both have been fully operational, OC
only, and fully off. Not at same times l think.

One of them has had the carrier flickering off for a sec or 2 but did not
note which.

Also when working 1670 seems louder than last month. (It is off now 1430
EDT Friday.)

Re: [IRCA] WBZ rollbacks

Your comments mirror my experience. I enjoy listening to WBZ over the air
when I am in eastern Ontario*, but for a couple of years now I have been
unable to listen on-line. (Their overnight show week days is very good I
think.)

If I learn a way to listen via streaming, I'll be happy.

[IRCA] Eclipse

2017-08-21 Thread Eric Floden
Peak here was around 1430 EDT. Nothing long distance noted here but
Belleville 800 and Toronto 640 among others went from muddy to easily
listenable. Sony 7600.

Winds got quite highjust prior to peak which drove bugs away yay

An hour later no change on Subaru radio.

[IRCA] CKWX-1130 off sporadically?

2017-05-23 Thread Eric Floden
Driving home post-game tonight it seemed like their signal completely
disappeared for several moments at a time. We are having huge wind gusts,
with many power outages. (Every time CKWX stopped being audible I turned
to the usually weaker Traffic-730 and they were easily audible.

Anyway, maybe 1120-1140 worth a listen overnight?

According to Northwest Broadcasters (even though based here in SW BC...)
CHMJ is now broadcasting from Delta again with 10kW after the fire
effective 3:45pm 25/7.

http://nwbroadcasters.com/index.html

Yesterday morning we were driving back from the US approaching Blaine, and
CHMJ was unlistenable as we searched for border crossing traffic tips.

Re: [IRCA] broken radio UPDATE and FIX

2016-07-14 Thread Eric Floden
UPDATE: Thanks to Colin Newell for taking the radio to repair it.
However, he discovered that instead of a mechanical fault, one of the gain
controls had been turned down. (After it was dropped grandson grabbed it
off the floor and perhaps he turned the dial.)

So I am red-faced for simply assuming a connection was broken and not
trouble-shooting better.

And thanks again to Colin.

And to Theo, who offered up the chance at another replacement radio.

All is better now* in radio-land now

*07/06/16 - AM 730 CHMJ Vancouver is expected to
return to the air later today or early tomorrow after engineers retuned a
standby antenna on the downtown TD Tower
.
Tower 4 at the main Burns Bog transmitter site was cut down around 12:20
p.m. Tuesday following a structural engineering recommendation and safety
considerations. An insulator failed, plunging the tower off its base and
30 feet into the bog. The main building, common point building and tower 2
have been saved, but three tower huts were destroyed in the blaze. The
wildfire that broke out Sunday morning is now 100 per cent contained. *

[IRCA] broken radio

2016-05-19 Thread Eric Floden
greetings

my Sony ICF-SW7600GR is my constant companion when traveling (of late
usually to Ottawa - Golden Lake - Peterborouogh) but then this week it fell
from a height of about 3 feet. I am back home now, and find FM works fine
but AM (all bands) is woeful. Locals on 690 and 650 used to be great, now
sound like Seattle area stations (710, 1000) used to. Even 1130, formerly
very good is almost unreadable. No reception at all for other locals (980,
1200).

So my guess is, the internal antenna has come adrift somehow.

And I am thinking I will open it up and have a look. Any cautions? I ask
as I am quite the butterfingers in matters of repair, and can often find
innovative ways to make a bad situation worse.

[IRCA] CBU 690 to be off air 3 hours next weekend

2015-11-08 Thread Eric Floden
I just caught part of the announcement -- it seems that next Sunday 15th
(or Saturday 14th), CBU-690 will be off the air from 0910 to 1210 PST. I
was distracted and could not focus on the whole of it, but think I have it
right. Their other signal (88.1) will remain on

Obviously, somewhere in the upper Plains states. Given what you said about
good conductivity and very different AM and shortwave DX, I'm going to
guess a small town in North Dakota.

[IRCA] C.Crane Twin Coil Ferrite(R) AM Antenna Signal Booster - any good?

2015-06-07 Thread Eric Floden
hi

I ask about this from the perspective of someone surprised he owns one. I
had forgotten I bought one over 10 years ago for an older relative who
could not get reliable radio reception. My recollection is the set-up and
installation was called off before it got started for (their) health
reasons. So I packed it away and forgot I owned it. It just surfaced this
week.

So, what do I own? Is it worth using? If not, is it worth anything on
re-sale? Not that I expect those questions can be answered, but I am
curious if anyone has any experience with this thing. Thanks

[IRCA] CBU-690 off

2014-06-10 Thread Eric Floden
greetings

I had to run an errand early today and noted that around 0450 PDT CBU-690
was silent (their FM 88.1 was on); by the time I was done and home, around
0510, they came back on, mid-song.

Now, a question. I read somewhere that there is a CBU repeater in Nanaimo
that uses 690. Is this true? Wikipedia hints at it:

CBU's signal on 690 AM also directly broadcasts to Nanaimo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanaimo and Gibsons
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibsons,_British_Columbia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBU_(AM)

Anyone know? It makes me think of the KKOB-770 situation with 50kW in
Albequerque, NM, and a smaller (250w.?) repeater, also on 770 in Santa Fe .

[IRCA] CBC Calgary to be briefly off-air

E. Floden
Vancouver

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/cbc-radio-to-be-briefly-off-air-sunday-monday-1.2557002

CBC Radio will briefly go off-air in Calgary on Sunday and Monday due to a
seasonal issue with satellites and transmitters.

Each year at this time, the sun moves behind the satellite used by CBC
Radio. It causes a sort of reverse eclipse, briefly interfering with
the transmitter's ability to pick up signals from the satellite.

This is temporary and will only last several minutes each day.

On Sunday, March 2, the outage will last from roughly 12:13 p.m. MT to 12:
20 p.m. MT.

On Monday, March 3, the outage will last from roughly 12:14 p.m. MT to

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-24

2014-02-24 Thread Eric Floden
and if I may, another one on the same notion

http://www.cbc.ca/undertheinfluence/season-3/2014/02/22/radio-is-dead-long-live-radio-2/

This week on Under The Influence, an encore performance of Radio Is Dead:
Long Live Radio where we look at the incredible creativity happening in
radio advertising around the world today.

Many advertisers think radio is yesterday's medium, but judging by the work
being done today, the opposite is true. We'll tell the story of a German
music school that used radio to recruit top music students by making their
email address invisible to all but those with perfect pitch, how an entire
country's radio stations switched formats one morning to sell a chocolate
bar and how the country of Colombia used radio to send a coded message of
hope out to kidnapped soldiers.

Radio isn't dead, it's hotter than ever.

Because I co-founded a company based on radio advertising, and because I
host a national radio show that explores the advertising industry, I am
often asked the same question over and over again:

What's going to happen to radio?

I'm always amused by that question, because the subtext is that radio is in
trouble.

To that I say - radio is the ultimate survivor.

It was the first-ever broadcast medium, and it went on the air way back in
the 1920s, both in Canada and the United States.

Warren Harding was the first American President to speak on public radio in
1922, and Prime Minister Mackenzie King was the first Canadian leader to be
broadcast in 1927.

Radio seemed like a miracle - because it the first time an entire country
could hear a live sound at exactly the same time.

Since then, radio has survived the competition of motion pictures,
television, VCRs, PVRs and now, the internet.

If I had to put my finger on why radio has survived, I would have to say
because it is such a personal medium.

Radio is a voice in your ear. It is a highly personal activity. People
rarely listen to radio in groups, the way an entire family might sit in
front of the television, or go to a theatre to see a movie.

Radio is local. It broadcasts news and programming that is mostly local in
nature. And through all the technological changes happening around radio,
and in radio - be it AM moving to FM moving to satellite radio and internet
radio, basic terrestrial radio survives into another day.

And in the world of advertising and marketing, radio continues to be
incredibly innovative.

Re: [IRCA] 75th anniversary

2013-10-30 Thread Eric Floden
I forget where I heard the story this week, but the gist was this:
newspapers were choked at the revenues that (this new-fangled medium) radio
was stealing from it, so they (newspapers) overblew the levels of hysteria
in their reporting, in order to show radio in a bad light.

The wiki article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Worlds_(radio) says,

Though there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed
panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response
has been debated.

I am at work now on a break, will try to rack my tired brains later to see
if I can remember where my info this week came from

 Hello To All,

While tuning the dial this evening I heard a station in English with
Religious talk in English underneath CBG Gander, Newfoundland on 1400 khz.

As the evening progressed the signal began to intensify with each peak and
at times was almost equal to the Gander station.

Finally on the hour came the station ID , alas another new country for the
 Ultralight logbook as follows:

1400 khz - GRENADA - Harbour Light of the Windwards, Carriacou 1:00 UTC
7/2/13 w/ Religious programming in English, Gospel songs then into
station ID followed by Daily Light broadcast ( heard through and at
times equal with CBG Gander NL )
