Steve,
I have had a lot of success with this email forum,
https://groups.io/g/swskeds
You will need to join the group to get access to the excel files which are
undated every week, this is by far the best around for current information
of stations on the air.
Try it...

Thanks

Steve, I'm not sure if there are any SWL equivalents to the ON4KST chat
pages...maybe someone knows but there are a lot of good online resources
that are kept up-to-date and will help you to figure out what SW stations
you may be hearing:

https://www.short-wave.info/

and

http://www.eibispace.de/ ...you can download or just keep this page open
while you listen...look for the eibi.txt file as well as the README.txt file

Good to see that we've opened the flood gates on this topic, James.

Rodent bites have never been an issue at my coastal location in western
Canada, and I forget that it can be a big issue elsewhere.

OT: It's not like we don't have rodents, but perhaps they're all
fat and happy from the continual feeding they get here from little old
ladies of all ages and as many genders as floats your boatthey think
they're feeding just the fluffy squirrels and the cute little chickadees.

The day I saw, in broad daylight, six large rats working a bird feeder a few
doors down made sure that I was never going to feed the wildlife, no matter
how senile I became. On the other hand, no rodent bites on the coax

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Coax Cable

2019-01-27 Thread James Niven
I am curious as to what type of coax everyone uses for DKAZ antennas and
also general international shortwave band listening dipoles?

It's time to revamp my antennas and I want to use the right cable that will
last for a while.

I have read that RG-8U is good for long runs of a 100 to 150 feet, and if I
was to bury my coax, which is the best pipe/conduit to use to bring my
cables into the shack?

thanks

Hello everyone:

I recently completed the January 2019 edition of the Pacific Asian Log. This
edition has many changes and updates for stations throughout Asia and the
Pacific.

The PAL has been posted on the Radioheritage website:
http://www.radioheritage.net/ The link for the PDF version is at the top center
of the site's main page.

You can also use an interactive version of the PAL by going through a couple of
the site's internal links.

The next update will be published in a couple of months.

Corrections and updates from users are always welcome and can be sent to
bport...@comcast.net or portze...@gmail.com.

First issued in 2001, The PAL lists medium wave and domestic shortwave
broadcasting stations in southern and eastern Asia and the Pacific. It
includes about 5000 stations in over 50 countries, with frequencies, call
signs, locations, power, networks, schedules, languages, formats, networks and
other information.

Re: [IRCA] [nrc-am] Perseus and Jaguar?

2018-11-27 Thread James Niven
Hi Brandon,

I have the Perseus SDR receiver and I have the Jaguar software, but it is a
little bit of a learning curve.
From what I have seen with this software so far, it is great for seeing the
various carriers on each frequency, but like I mentioned I am still learning to
use the software.
Maybe others will chime in
Thanks

TP's were in on the lower portion of the band this morning, I started

but better than the previous mornings I have listened on.

Other frequencies with hets were 1098, 1089, 1017, 828 and 837khz were
noted.

TA's were around last night at tune 0006 to 0100utc. Frequencies noted with
hets were 531, 558, 909, 936, 981, 1026, 1044, 1053, 1089, 1125, 1107, 1215,

Unfortunately, no audio noted but will try every night.

Re: [IRCA] Informal "poll"

2018-02-08 Thread James Niven
Russ,

For me, I started out DXing SW when I was a teen living in Australia on June
29 1975, my first logging was Radio Nederland broadcasting to the Pacific
region with the "Happy Station", then followed by Radio Canada
International.
Later in 1975, I was sharing pretty much equal time between SW and Broadcast
Dxing.
Now a days, it's pretty much Broadcast DXing, more of a challenge

Mostly this is aimed at folks here who've been DX'ing for many years.

How many here either started out DX'ing SW or have done so along with BCB
over the years ?

I started with BCB as a child, and dabbled in SW in my late teens and early
twenties, then went back to BCB because to me at the time it was too easy to
log multiple countries in a fairly short period of time as compared to BCB.

Stephen,

Mark beat me to the punch, DKAZ antenna is the way to go for MW reception, 5
acres, I would have one on each off the 4 compass point directions.
I have two here in Austin, Texas, one to the east and the other to the

Subject: [IRCA] retirement / move / antennas

IRCA,

This is almost a reintro as I have not been very active the last few years.
Between a long commute and long hours at work, added to 2 back surgeries I
have had little time.

I am finally now living in a place I can have all the antennas I can afford.

I moved from the San Francisco Bay area to a small house in Boone Iowa in
2004. I retired three years ago (unix / network / application
support) and began the hunt for a more suitable place to live now that I
did not have to worry about how far I was from work. We hunted for a year.
My wife wanted a larger garden and I wanted more room for larger, better
antennas. We both wanted more privacy. After a year of hunting we both
got what we wanted. A bonus for me low noise level, nearest neighbor is
1/4 of a mile away, next nearest is close to 3/4 of a mile)

It has taken me 2 years to move, sell the old place and do some repairs and
additions to the new place (it did not have a garage). It had a 42 x 73
foot machine shed for parking combines, but the doors weigh about
400 pounds and can be difficult in the winter. We have 5.2 acres some of
which we rent to the farmer who farms the 70 acres behind us. He has told
me I can run beverages across the fields in the winter after harvest as long
as I take them down in the spring before planting.

I spent the last two summers working on antennas. We had a bad hail storm
last March (golf ball sized hail driven by 60 MPH winds) $29K worth of
damage in about 10 minutes. It undid some of my work.

It was a race this summer to finish all my antennas before winter. I just
made it. It was -15.8F just before sunrise this morning.

I now have antennas up for all the HF ham bands and I have spent the last
few days refurbishing my beloved Sanserino Loop. Got it up this afternoon
thanks to help from several IRCA members. Thank You all. I hope to also
use it on 160M, along with a BOG or two.

See www.qrz.com put my callsign ng0g in the little search window in the
upper left hand corner. Scroll down below the bio for photos of antennas
that include views of some of our new place.

Good to be back up and at the dials.

Steve

Hi Group,

I have been hearing a station in the jumble with instrumental Opera type
music, in the morning and now in the evening period as a matter of fact
right now at 2300 utc. I have not been lucky enough to snag an ID as yet.

I am wondering if others have any ideas as to whom this may be??

The station seems better on my East Dkaz antenna. I first thought it may be
XEQI, but I heard them on my south Dkaz with news program.

Thanks

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] New logging

2017-09-17 Thread James Niven
Thanks for the tip Bill and Steve, noted here this morning 09/17/2017 at 7am
with strong signal here in Austin, TX with continuous loop to pull in buyers of
air time.

I also checked my SDR recording for 09-15-2017 and it was there on this date. I
did check my 09/10/2017 SDR recording but did not hear it, but the recording
was at 4am, so it could have been on later in the week. So, it appears to have
come back on the air between 09/10 and 09/15 or so.

New log here and makes 15 new logs this year on AM.

2500 watt daytimer with primary lobe aimed west. Per the I Love AM Radio
Facebook site, it's a repeating loop describing the station and soliciting
potential buyers. They were at it as well the previous two nights both before

[IRCA] Logs this morning 09-03-2017

2017-09-03 Thread James Niven
I spent a few hours on the dials this morning, signals were pretty good from
the south……

950 XEOJN San Lucas Ojitlán, OAX on 09/03 at 1128 utc, I thought I would
check this frequency since KPRC in Houston has been off the air since
Hurricane Harvey, I was rewarded with a new logging. They were playing nice
Spanish ballads sung in Spanish with orchestral backing. At 1130, a female
came on with "…XEOJN La Voz de Chinantla" very clear, then a minute later
with full ID by male and female. There was mention of a website. New logging
here for me

930 XETLA Tlaxiaco, OAX in with a fair signal at 1137 lively Spanish vocals
by male and ID noted, mentions of “La Voz de la Mixteca” and call letters
was noted. RELOG here.

1000 XEOY, Ciudad de México, DF, 09/03 at 1115, noted with it’s usual big
signal. Noted with “La Mejor” ID’s and also mentions of “Mil AM” as well.

1030 trying to take advantage with KCTA off the air at present, I usually
hear “Radio Centro XEQR”, but all I heard was a jumble of Spanish speaking
stations, no sign of XEQR, further listening to recordings is needed to see
if there are ID’s

For anyone skillful in deciphering DU English (Theo?) or who may be skillful
in listening, several strong DU English mystery recordings were made on 531
kHz during the recent Rockwork 4 DXpedition near Manzanita, Oregon. Signal
strength wasn't the problem-- my inability to "translate" the unusual
English tripped me up with these. There are three possibilities with each
recording-- the 10 kW station 4KZ in Innisfail, Queensland, Australia, the 5
kW station 2PM in Kempsey, NSW, Australia, and the 2 kW station More FM in
Alexandra (South Island), New Zealand. 531 kHz was a real circus on the
ocean cliff almost every morning-- this is just a sample of the
free-for-all. Any deciphering which might indicate station identity would be
greatly appreciated!

[IRCA] Austin, Texas

2017-08-26 Thread James Niven
Hi everyone,

A quick report from Austin Texas, started light rain here about one hour
ago, now getting heavier. I feel for the folks on the gulf coast, let's hope
all make it through without loss of life.

On a Radio note, I am tuning around at present, picked up two new stations
on 740khz, I have KTRH in Houston nulled somewhat. I have just logged KVOR
in Colorado Springs and then 20 minutes later I heard KCBS in San Francisco,
so the weather is playing to my benefit at present.

There is also a "Radio Formula" station on 740 from Mexico but at present
don't know which one it is, I will keep listening.

thanks

Regards,

James Niven

Austin, Texas

Re: [IRCA] Shortwave band interference

2017-08-19 Thread James Niven
Robert,

I want to thank you for your suggestion on these chokes from the below URL.
I purchased the RFI-Kit-1 and RFI-Kit-2 kits which have the large and small
chokes.
I am very impressed with these chokes; my noise issue is pretty much now
non-existent on shortwave frequencies. I listened tonight and added many new
loggings to the logbook.
I also used the large choke on my ELAD USB cable to the laptop and I was
amazed how it quieten the noise level down as well which I was getting from
the laptop power supply. If I wanted to run over night recordings, it was
only from the battery power.

Now, it's time to improve my antennas next since the noise issue is gone.

Thanks agin!!

Yes, Common Mode chokes work wonders. You might be able to knock some of it
back with ferrite snap ons for the power supply and the Cable TV coax.

[IRCA] Shortwave band interference

2017-08-14 Thread James Niven
Hi all,

Here in the shack my AM band is very clear of any interference and I have no
issues picking out weak stations, but the shortwave bands are covered in a
kind of hash interference and only strong signals are being heard.

Over the weekend, I turned off all the circuit breakers in the house and one
by one turned them on until I found the device(s) causing the interference.
It turns out the spectrum cable modem is the issue along with the two boxes
on top of the TV's for the cable connection. These devices are powered by
the external power pack.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience in tackling such noise or
will the MFJ-1026 unit be affective enough to reduce or remove the noise I
am experiencing.

Unfortunately, turning on the cable modem is out of the question as it's the
Internet/TV and Phone services to the house, plus my wife uses the internet
as well.

Any suggestions are welcomed..

Regards,

James Niven

The one I am most puzzled about is 1215.. looking in the ACMA database, I
get two listings...4HI Moranbah with 250 Watts and 6NM Northam with 500W..
that would seem near impossible to be heard up here.

I guess 1152 is 6PB. Not sure who 1134 is though.

No need to wait for a time check: if 1062 is parallel to 891 (by vfar the
easiest South Australian), it is South Australia as both have the half hour
time offset. If it is parallel to any of the other regular ABC Local
stations (774, 1548, 612, 702 etc), it is 4TI.

4TI is a nightly regular on my DXpeditions. 5MV is very unusual.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] 5MV/4TI on 1062khz

2016-11-25 Thread James Niven
Paul,

From what I remember, the only way to ID the station in this case 5MV in South
Australia and 4TI in Queensland on the same frequency is via time checks given
if any are given at the time you are listening. Usually at the TOH or BOH you
may hear one.

South Australia is ½ hour behind Queensland in the winter months and then First
Sunday in Oct to First Sunday in Apr) ½ ahead due to daylight saving,
Queensland usually did not participant in this practice when I was living there.

Thanks

Is there anyway to know which of the ABC'ers I logged on 1062? 5MV is in South
Australia and 4TI is in Queensland.

The signal was poor, and i didnt catch an id, here's a clip though:

[IRCA] Euro-African MW Guide

2016-11-19 Thread James Niven
Hi All,

I am looking for back copies of the now closed down EMWG. I hoping some of
you just have copies of this great publication.

I have 3 editions here only plus the last online version of the very last
update.

The copies I have are:

EMWG 2006

EMWG 2006-2007

EMWG 2008 May

If someone would be kind enough to send me PDF versions of the other
editions you may have and willing to share, I would be grateful.

I am looking to starting a Radio History Project on AM in Europe, these will
be very valuable for research.

Please reply direct to jniven@austin dot rr dot com

Thanks

Regards,

James Niven

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Autumn 2016 DXpeditions?

2016-10-21 Thread James Niven
Hi Mark,

Chris Knight and myself just came back from a mini DXpedition to Padre island
last Saturday 15th, we have a lot of recordings to go through both of us, but
early indications are showing a few Columbians being heard and of course tons
of Cubans and Mexicans.

There is a list of logs in the next DXN magazine which I have sent in the Bruce
Conti.

Thanks

Subject: [NRC-AM] Autumn 2016 DXpeditions?

I'm curious as to what DXpeditions are on tap before winter sets in.

"Who's going where when?"

Of greatest interest to me are ones along the US and Canadian Atlantic
coastline such as:
PEI - I think Bruce Conti, Brent Taylor, and some others are signed up for that
Newfoundland - ?
NJ coast (Long Beach Island?)

Of course, here in the east, results from those outings are augmented well by
near-DXpedition-grade home-based reporters such as Allen Willie in NL, Michael
Yule in NS, Brent Taylor in PEI, Sylvain Naud in QC, a few of us in New
England, and sporadic contributors from other coastal hotspots such as the NC
Outer Banks and south FL.

Still somewhat relevant to me would be news about DXpeditions in Europe,
Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

The West Coast guys must have some activities cooked up (such as Rockworks,
Grayland, and Haida Gwaii). Every so often trips to Hawaii are mentioned.
Japanese and Australian DXers are likely to be active sometime too.

I'm thinking of doing at least one or two sessions from the car at beach sites
within an hour's drive time. Typically these would be around local sunset at
sites providing more consistent / strong TA and South American signals than can
normally be obtained at the house. Maybe I would try to coordinate a
mini-DXpedition night with others' activities in PEI or NL as I've done in some
previous years.

On December 3, 2015 KLIB was granted an extension of an engineering STA
granted in May. It is having transmitter problems. It is operating at 25% of
licensed power (1.25 kW) during the day and its normal 500 watts at night.

Thanks for passing that on James. Some streams are blocked outside
of country of origin, though I haven't found that a problem with US ones
here in Canada, and certainly Neil shouldn't have, unless he's on an exotic
vacation somewhere.

It's a bit of a mysterious process to me, what works for certain streams,
and why, and annoying when you have only a few minutes of a DX opening to
find a parallel.

I hope this one nets you a new station.

best wishes,

Depending upon the type of Asian mx, this could be CINA from Toronto
although 6:30 CDT may be a bit late for them. However, X-banders do often
come in well prior to sunset and hang around well after their sunrise.

http://www.radioseoul1650.com/live/live.html looked promising, James, but
it's dead on my browser, as I now see it was on Neil's.

The usual suspects offering the stream (tune-in, streema etc.) are full of
the usual junk to infest your computer, and eventually offer nothing at all
as well.

best wishes,

Hi,

I was tuned to 1650 this morning at 6:30am local time, I heard Asian music
slightly over the Spanish sports from KSVE in El Paso. I assume this is KFOX
in Torrance CA, I did not hear any ID, but seems to point to them.

I looked at KFOX's web site for a listen live link but all in Korean, so

I will tune in again and hopefully confirm this ID.

Anyone know of a listen live link??

[IRCA] Remote Termination on DKAZ and EWE

2016-03-19 Thread James Niven
Hi all,

A General question...

I think it's time to try out setting up remote termination on my DKAZ and
EWE.

I have some lamp cable which I can run the length of my dkaz 140 foot to the
DX shack.

I thought I picked up 1k pots from radio shack, but I see I have 5k instead,
will a 5K Linear-Taper Pot work or do I need something smaller?

Also, this pot I have has three solder lugs, which lugs do I use to fix the
wire end on?

Hi All,

I recently made a fresh Windows 10 install on my computer and I was looking
to re-install my licensed GeoClock but it seems that the GeoClock page
doesn't exist anymore and unfortunately, I didn't have on my backup any
GeoClock installation package :(

Is there any recent news of this program? Despite its old "DOS" fashion
look, I like it because it is lightweight and fairly easy to use.

Thank you

I use something very similar to the Alpha-Delta, although I don't recall
right now the name of the maker. Most of my cables are PL-259/SO-239 as that
is what I had used for my amateur operations as well. For the LBI
DXpedition, I have also accumulated a number of adapters.

James, I use the Alpha-Delta Model Delta-4 coax switch. The only drawback
for me is that I have to add SO-239 to BNC adapters, as all my coax is BNC.
Thankfully, over the years, I accumulated plenty of them. It's nice, very
sturdy, and can be "turned off", by the center click. It claims to be a
surge protector as well, although I'm not sure how much I'd trust it for
those purposes. I've had many others over the years. Seems like at
Hamfests, it's always easy to find the rotary variety (they're circular)
with, I believe 5 or 6 inputs available. Building your own can be done, but
seems like a lot of trouble when there are so many commercially available,
and on the used market. Here's the one I'm talking about:

Subject: [NRC-AM] Canadian AM Call Changes Questions

I'm trying to overcome the gaps created by being inactive from 1983-1989, and
I'm looking for the call sign histories of a number of Canadian stations -- or,
better yet - a source where I can look them up like I can for most US stations
on FCC's CDBS.

Here are the ones I'm looking to obtain, and I'd likely want all changes since
1983:

590 Toronto

600 North Bay

600 Montreal

690 Montreal

730 Leamington

790 Sudbury

960 Kingston

1250 Oakville

1310 Ottawa

1350 Oshawa

1430 Toronto

1540 Toronto

I realize that not all of these are considered officially as call changes, but
from my point of view, the fact that a station went dark for a while, and then
someone else resurrected the facility ( with or without new equipment, site etc
) doesn't change anything - to me it's still a call change.

Thanks in advance for any help !

Re: [IRCA] DXpedition capture files?

2015-10-30 Thread James Niven
I would love to hear other DXers SDR recordings, I know Perseus is mentioned
here but don't forget the ELAD FDM S2 recording which I have as well as
others.
I think this would be a great idea, but I know storage on a server somewhere
will need storage capacity.

I think if the recordings were left on the server for perhaps a week or two
then removed to make room for other recordings would be a great idea, keep
them rotating so to speak.
Maybe also, have folders for Countries and the states or provinces under
them or recordings saved under the DXers name along with his/her location so
everyone will see clearly which location the recordings were made.
Plus, it does not have to be just DXpeditions, some DXers have a great home
location.

Just my 2 cents

I think a lot of us would contribute Perseus snips if they didn't have to
always be current.

Some form of pre-upload "vetting" might be a good thing, to minimize
congestion. It could take the following general form:

"I have TOH snips of MW taken at PM (AM) on a 140-ft Broadside D-Kaz
oriented 325 degrees from (QTH). Payload size___. Holler if you want
them"

The offered snips are uploaded only if someone asked for them. 'Admin'
keeps the list of offers and from time to time posts a reminder here that
such snips are available by request.

I'd be more than happy to be that 'Admin'...but first we need a storage
site.

Cheers!

Mark Durenberger

A few days back I commented about possible availability of RF capture files
from recent DXpeditions, as in the days when Guy Atkins ran the "Five Below"

website.
I haven't seen any comments about this yet. Recent DXpeditions would
include Masset, Rockworks, and Grayland on the West Coast as well as any
East Coast activity such as the Miscou Island, NB outing (about which I have

read remarkably little so far).

Usually we're talking about Perseus files but, presumably with the
availability of HDSDR etc. generic software, other file formats such as
Elad, Excalibur, and Afedri could also be shared for everyone's enjoyment.

I have my 7'x24' Conti Superloop pointed 120 degrees into Mexico tonight,
and I logged my 100th "XE" station at the 7pm MST (2UT) TOH:

1240 XEWG, Cuidad Juarez CH, weak at 6:59pm (0159UT), 1000W, faint but
intelligible full TOH call, 400 miles

An overwhelming majority of stations have been from the border estados, so
it wasn't surprising for it to be Chihuahua. However, this is only my
second Mexican graveyarder out of 48. Up to 570 stations total since last
August.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a magic bullet for this. I actually
record more than most, :58:00 to :06:40 just in case a station is quite late
or the possibility of catching something after network news.
Also, for XE stations that give a full ident after playing a long version of
the Mexican national anthem at a particular TOH. But, I usually don't have
to go beyond the TOH to see if there is something interesting. If I get a
new station or a better quality ident in the raw file, I stop and "record"
to an audio file and edit/filter it in Audacity. So, if I have a good TOH,
it can take an hour or more to go through it. If not, it can be much less
as I rapidly flick through the usual warhorses. Listening to every single
second of every single channel in a TOH recording is not even in the
ballpark of what one actually needs to do in a routine situation.

My solution (so far) is to not record all the time, as much as I might want
to. Right now, most of my TOH recordings are a byproduct of recording
several hours up to sunrise to monitor trans-Pacific reception. I can't
leave out any of my primary antennas 24/7 due to blocking the driveway or
fragility of the antenna. So, if I don't feel like setting up or think I
will be rushed in the morning in trying to take it down, I don't record.

[IRCA] 690 XEMA

2015-09-14 Thread James Niven
Hi All,

Even though I had all of the Padre Island recordings to go through, I
recorded overnight on Saturday 12th, I was rewarded with a new one on 690

690 XEMA Fresnillo, ZAC, with what sounds like 3 to 4 station on the
frequency, one station came up on top and out of a musical item a male
mentioned, "..XHA. and XEMA ..Grupo RadioFonico ...", with fair level at
2200cdt.

Going through this recording, conditions sounded rather different from other
nights, there were jumble of stations on many frequencies, so I look forward
to reviewing more of the recording via the SDR, antenna DKAZ aimed at 120deg

Also surprised to see neither Rebelde or Marti on 1180. Of course Marti is
beaming at Cuba but I guess Rebelde is beaming right at me on Cape Cod since it

[IRCA] DKAZ Antenna

2015-08-18 Thread James Niven
Hi All,

Just wanted to report I have completed my DKAZ antenna over the past weekend
and I have had a chance to test it out the past few nights.

I followed the design as Mark Durenberger's article
http://www.durenberger.com/documents/DKAZREPORT051214.pdf I built the 140
foot long with 22 feet high supports. I am at present using a 900 ohm fixed
1 watt resistor and the direction is 120 degree.

I have been comparing the DKAZ to my present 150 foot longwire running
pretty much in the same direction, so far, the performance of the DKAZ has
been very encouraging. Signals are appearing a lot stronger and earlier in
the evening than the Longwire and I can tell signals from the north are
reduced, while signals from the South are a lot stronger and louder.

On a couple of frequencies I have checked, on the DKAZ there is a station
with a decent signal while the Longwire has no station at all or a different
station.

I am still to hear a new station with this antenna but it will happen.

Thanks for the fine article Mark and answering my questions.

Subject: Re: [IRCA] Recorded AM BCB Logs made with ELAD FDM-S2 Receiver……….

Welcome to the world of SDR DXing. Quite agree that the manuals (of all the SDR
receivers) leave a lot to be desired. The rapid pace of development and
software enhancements leaves little time to write detailed manuals, I'm afraid.
Developers now seem to rely more on User Groups, forums, etc. to allow users to
help each other. That system works well, but it takes some getting used to.

Allow me to share some tips given to me by AM DX'er James Niven when I started
with my Elad SDR. They've proven to be very helpful. First of all, make sure
that you subscribe to the Elad Yahoo Group, and update your software
frequently. Enhancements and improvements appear quite rapidly. Sometimes
within hours of a feature being requested by a user on the Yahoo Group! The
latest software can be downloaded at:

http://sdr.eladit.com/FDM-sw2%20Software/

I successfully have mine setup for TOH recordings across the whole broadcast
band.

I am still experimenting with different settings, but I seem to be happy with
the file size set at 2048mb and set to 1 file.

For the recording schedule, I started with this recording configuration:

I start recording 2 minutes before the TOH 00:58, then finishing at 5 minutes
past the hour, I found the file size very large.

I then tried recording from 00:58 to 00:03, so 5 minutes, still a large file
but enough to look at every frequency in the AM band for TOH.

Also, how I set mine up is change the CW to AM, then the LO frequency, I set to
1120.000 kHz and the tuned frequency to 540.000 kHz. This will give you the
whole AM band and when you begin reviewing your files, it will start at 540khz,
this is my method and approach.

James Niven

Austin, Texas

Also keep in mind that the Elad FDM-S2 will work with more than one piece of
software. This is the beauty of an SDR, you're not limited to using the
manufactures software exclusively. One of the easiest to use and master
software packages for SDR is Simon Brown’s SDR-Console V2 software
(www.sdr-radio.com) It's free, and easier to use than most.
HDSDR is another software application that works well with the Elad. You may
want to experiment with them to see if you enjoy them more.

Recommend this detailed review of the Elad as well. It's full of suggestions on
how to use the software, and do some great things with the receiver. Hope you
enjoy the ride, it's changed my DX life forever.

Re: [IRCA] The Sangean ATS 909X

2015-02-05 Thread James Niven
Hi,

With all the talk on this receiver, where in the US can I get one repaired?
My ATS909 works ok, but after the receiver has been turned on for a while,
the sounds becomes distorted and fades out (this is the best way to describe
it)
It will be nice to have fixed and working again!

The older ATS-909/RadioShack DX-398 has a reputation of being numb on MW and
SW without external antennas. My DX-398 is. SW is excellent with a short
length of wire clipped to the whip. MW is great when used with an
inductively coupled loop. Fortunately I paid very little for mine. I think
it was a very poor value at full price.

2015-02-03 Thread James Niven
Paul,

I picked up this station on April 22nd 1979 while living in Australia.
I was on a DX-pedition to Port MacDonnel in South Australia right on the
coast. There were three of us on this trip Sam Dellit, Harry Weatherley and
myself listening on our Drake SPR-4's in those days with 600 metres beverage
to Africa.
That same morning we also logged 746 Voice of Kenya, 1368 Radio Seychelles,
and Radio Vatican 1530, plus a lot of other Asians and African station.
I have a recording some place on my tapes, will need to dig it up!

Thanks for the memories!!

Re: [IRCA] What Happened to Houston's Disney Station - KMIC 1590?

2015-01-22 Thread James Niven
Stephen,

According to Radio Insight dated 11/04/2014:

Radio Disney has sold off the first of its pending 23 divestitures as it
sells 1590 KMIC Houston to DAIJ Media for $3.2 million.

The buyer, headed by Rafael and Ruben Villarreal, owns four other AMs and
one FM translator in the Houston market: 880 KJOZ Conroe, 980 KQUE
Rosenburg, 1380 KRCM Shenandoah, and 1460 KBRZ/95.1 K236AR Missouri City.
DAIJ Media also owns three LPTV's, while the Villarreal brothers are also
the principal owners of five non-commercial FM's under the Aleluya
Broadcasting Network umbrella.

I see on StationIntel.com, KMIC is silent at present. I think we will see
Spanish Religion coming very soon!!

Okay, so I admit my being slow on the draw on this, but I've just now
noticed the past 3 nights that KMIC 1590 has not been heard at my QTH in SE
Houston.

I knew they were facing possible sale, but I haven't seen or heard anything

Did they allow their license to expire? Did they just go dark? Inquiring

seemed // XEK web stream but not strong enough to be certain. XEHK also has
ballads and is online. No Mexican has huge power at night so I am
considering day powers. Am curious for input - who's getting what on 960?

I could ask same for 1070 where anthem is rising as I write at 0606 central,
also very faint!

[IRCA] 1060 XERDO

2014-12-19 Thread James Niven
I was looking at the latest data on the Infraestructura de estaciones
website on 12-17-2012. The information dated November 26th shows XERDO on
1060.

Then, after reading NeilKaz's logging of 1060 XERDO (ex1450), I tuned in
that evening to see if it was audible here in Cedar Creek, Texas.

There was a definite hum on the channel at around 8pm local time. With KFIT
in Lockhart on the same channel about 15 miles away with black gospel, it's
pretty difficult to tune in earlier. I tuned to the high side of the channel
and XERDO was there after selecting LSB mode, in fairly clear with many La
Raza ids.

So, now I have this logged on both 1450 and 1060khz.

DXing on an ocean side cliff at a Highway 101 turn off in Oregon is
pretty wild, but probably not as wild as trying to sort out all the South

Suggestions or information on the following UnID mysteries would be greatly

I have uploaded 40+ Easter Island tracks to the DXer.ca website -

My file systems are secure and subscription access only at this time - due
to the size of the library and the overwhelming demand and number of
downloads from when it was wide open... 10's of thousands of downloads over
the space of a year. My ISP costs are around $40/month now - fairly
manageable...
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=
For members of the IRCA list, I offer free access.
In order to do that in an orderly fashion, each interested listener can send
me an e-mail and I will create a special account on DXer.ca for you to
access the audio archive

Your userid will be your e-mail address and I will send you a password ASAP.

If any of you are feeling crazy generous, for 99 cents you can get instant

I recorded the last two hours of KLYC's sign-off at 1:00 PM PDT.  The first
hour saved to the computer fine.  The final hour recorded - I even played it
back - but there was some glitch somewhere and it saved nothing. I clicked
save as like usual and then save again, only to have a dialog box appear
and my file gone. I've done this hundreds of times, so who knows what
happened. FYI, the woman who owns the station thanked advertisers, listeners
and staff. The final song was the Traveling Wllbury's End of the Line.

Patrick,

The owner of KLYC has schedule a sale of the equipment and furnishings on
April 6, 2013. The call letters since 1949 have been KMCM - KCYX -
06/04/1979 KLYC - 06/20/1990. Sad to see the station leave the air. A lot of
people on the Portland PDX forum believe that station will not return to the
air.  Since I moved up here from the SF Bay Area in 2002, KLYC has been the
only station that I have logged on 1260 kHz. I will try and record the
sign-off on April 6. I have KYLC now at S-9+15 db on the Sky wire antenna. A
distance of 58 miles South Southwest as the crow flies. Moderate splatter
from KBAM Long view, WA.

That is too bad. I remember listening to the station back in the 1960s under
the calls KMCM for McMinnville. I wonder if the station will finally be
bought and return to the air? I guess it came on in 1949, the year I was
born.

Problem is that WCLD 1490 Cleveland MS is heard here (fair daytime

I had somebody playing Dave Mason's We Just Disagree and James Brown's
Papa's Got A Brand New Bag yesterday morning at 7:30 a.m. (Eastern
Standard Time) about 30 minutes past local sunrise.   There was a jingle in
between the songs that sounded like oldies 95.  Also heard around this
time was the usual WWJ-Detroit as well as WXLW-Indiapolis.  CFAM-Altona was
also in prior to local sunrise.

The only thing I see that would be remotely close would be KRWZ in Denver.
I don't think KRWZ is likely.  For what it is worth, the KRWZ website shows
the songs they played and what I heard does not match up to what they said
they were playing.

I think I also had the same station one day last week around the same time,
just after the sun had come up in Toronto, with music by Sly The Family
Stone, Tommy James and Bill Haley The Comets.

Is anybody aware of somebody else on 950 who recently changed formats?

Thanks

I would love to have a Perseus receiver here in Austin, Texas, the Mexican

The demo will have to do the job for now and listen to files that other
DXers have and just drool from the mouth...LOL!

 Hi James,

These large files are not typical audio recordings. They are specialized WAV
files with encoding that represents a large swath of RF bandwidth. In this
case, the files contain the medium wave band as heard by Dave Aichelman when
he was visiting Hawaii with his Perseus SDR and antennas. It requires
Perseus software (such as the demo mentioned by Sylvain Naud) or the free
HDSDR software.

Once loaded and playing back in the host program you can tune around the
band, apply filtering and modes, change AGC, passband tuning, etc. just like
you can in real time with the receiver. The entire band is there for you
to explore, and with WAV files recorded in a far away place you can
experience what the band sounds like as you explore the many stations.

It is this recording capability for the entire band that is the #1 feature
of a good SDR like Perseus.

My Mediafire.com file storage account has quite a few similar recordings
made by Perseus owners from around the world.

Dave Aichelman, N7NZH, recently made a trip to Kauai, Hawaii and returned
with top of the hour (TOH) and bottom of the hour (TOHH) Perseus WAV
recordings of the medium wave band.

His compact, phased array antenna was mostly aimed south toward Tahiti and
the South Pacific. He used a tent-pole micro-loop (7' X 7') and both an
FLG100 and ALA100 antenna head. The ALA100 recordings were done on 6/15 with
the TOH aimed south and the TOHH aimed east. The 6/11 recordings were done
with the FLG100, both aimed south and were about 10db lower signal level.

All recordings have the Hawaii stations on them. You can clearly hear
Tahiti, Samoa and what is probably Australia and New Zealand. There are a
few surprises also. 1610 appears to have 'The Valley' station from the
Carribbean and there were numerous Brazillian stations as well.

Dave's WAV files are 904MB and 4GB in size (two each from June 11th and
15th), and they are hosted on my Mediafire.com account. So, give your
broadband Internet connection some exercise and download the files from:
http://www.mediafire.com/?112tbwh3e9a5c The 4GB files are a full eight
minutes long, across the top of the hour.

Thanks, Dave, for sharing your Perseus recordings with the DXing community!

Hi Walt,

Checking the information I have and FCC, it is KRKZ changed from KBIS

Maybe the announcer mentioned the wrong calls...?

I did have fun, maybe hearing some of the tones and sweeps from KRSN.
In any case, my Perseus is parked on that station and I did hear a couple of
others, namely KSKR in Roseburg OR, KOMJ in Omaha NE. Now there's another:
My 2011/2012 NRC AM Radio Guide (and the Canada/US AM station Info list)
show 1490 Forks, WA as having the call sign as KRKZ (ex KBIS). Well the ID
I heard today is KBIS! What gives?

More Dashboard DX this morning!

As I drove to work this morning, I tuned my 2003 Camry's radio to 90.3 MHz,
right next to local 90.5 MHz KPFT Pacifica Radio. I heard some flutter, but
nothing intelligible. When I pulled into the parking lot at work, the
signals became quite strong and clear. I was listening to KYLC, Lake
Charles, LA, an American Family Radio station.

Here's a brief synopsis of what I heard:

08:55 AM Network ID - American Family Radio, then into I Don't Want to
Go by Avalon
08:58 AM Talk by JJ and Ron about the American Family Radio Facebook page
08:59 AM Local ID - 90.3 KYLC Lake Charles, then a network spot about
boycotting Home Depot stores
09:00 AM American Family Radio News

I had to stop listening at that point because my job intervened!

Once again, never dismiss the in-between channels!

73 and Good DX'ing!

[IRCA] FCC AM and FM Query text files

2011-05-25 Thread James Niven
Hi All,

I am reaching out to those who download the FCC AM Query and FM Query text
files of the whole frequency range.

I am looking for past text files, does anyone know whether there is a link
on the FCC website where they hold archived text files for AM and FM
everyday or is this wishful thinking?

If someone downloads the text files every day, I would like to hear from
them, please contact me offline.

I have a little project in mine and would like some past files for history
and processing.

Thanks

Subject: [IRCA] Another history question

Thanks to everyone for the history on moves to 650 Khz. I have another
history question. When did the following stations move to 880; KRVN WMEQ
KJJR and CHQT?
I originally started DXing in the early 70's. My dad used to listen to
distant broadcasts like the Grand Ole Opry and that's how I got started. He
used a Zenith transoceanic Royal 1000. He bought me a $20 Playmate made in
Japan radio after he got tired of me wearing out the batteries in his radio.

In spite of being a cheap radio without an RF amplifier like the Zenith has;

it actually performed quite well. I frequently received and listened to
stations like WBZ, WCBS, WWL, and WSB not to mention others. WCBS was my
favorite. I guess it had something to do with New York City. After the radio

died in the late 70's I dropped the hobby entirely. I came back to it in
January 1991 when I found a GE Superadio II while browsing the electronics
section in the Canadian Tire store in Brandon. The words Long Range and
High Selectivity on the picture of the dial on the box caught my attention.

The big list of specs like 4 tuned IF stages on AM, 8 ferrite rod antenna
and tuned RF o!
n AM sold me on it and I bought it right there. I unpacked it as soon as I
got home, turned it on at 4:45PM that afternoon and was astounded at the
sensitivity and selectivity. I have never owned or tried a radio that even
came close to the performance of this unit. 5 minutes later I stumbled on
WBZ loud and clear and was amazed at the catch considering how cluttered the

AM band now was. I always thought that it would be totally impossible to
improve the sensitivity of the unit any further, However a few years later I

discovered the IRCA and joined. I purchased some literature from the club
and Ralph Sanserino's loop was just too tempting not to build and try. I
expected it to be a flop, but how wrong I was. It really blew me away as it
pulled in stations loud and clear that were totally absent on the Superadio
without it even with the volume wide open. It more than doubled the number
of station I could pick up during the daytime.

Re: [IRCA] Opinions requested on documenting station swaps

2011-01-18 Thread James Niven
For me, if the station changes frequency or city of license, then I count as a
new station.
As for Call letter or format changes I do re-log the station but it does not
add to my totals since there is no change at the transmitter site.

This is my 2 cents worth.

My approach is, I guess, to log the actual stick in
the ground (the tower/antenna) on a given frequency.
If the same antenna switches frequency, then for me
it would be a new station. However, I treat call
sign changes about the same way I would treat format
changes, and note them as sorta cosmetic changes on
the same station.

The one thing I am on the fence about is where the
station gets approval for a pattern and/or power
change. For example, KRKO-1380 up here recently went
to a jillion watts compared to what they were putting
out before, and have a new tower, transmitter and
IBOC exciter (sigh...). Logging them now is a lot
easier than it was. For someone in Montana, they
went from being a tough catch to perhaps a pest.
It's as if there is a completely different station
there from a DXing point of view, yet they have the
same physical location and frequency. What to do?

To me these are call changes. I note them in my
logs, ( and would do so again should they change
again down the road ) but I don't count them in my
totals.

I know that others do things differently, but many do
it this way also.

At one time, I counted call changes, however I
realized that as the different calls had no effect on
my ability to hear the station or not, and the
facilities were the same, that counting them no
longer made sense, so I re-did my logs at the time to
that effect.

 I'm playing with radio station
history again and I'm doing battle with
myself about how to document station swaps. I'll give
 two examples.

Example #1: A few years back, KLOC/920/Ceres CA
 format moved to
KVIN/1390/Turlock CA, and the KVIN format moved over to
 KLOC. The call
letters swapped with the format change. From a
 listener's perspective, that
is a frequency change and the city change is
transparent to
 the listener.
From the FCC perspective, its two call letter changes
 for two separate
facilities and who cares about the formats.

 Example #2: Recently, KERN/1410/Bakersfield CA
 swapped formats and call
letters with KERI/1180/Wasco CA. As with example #1,
 the listener finds
their favorite station on a new frequency, and the city
 change is
transparent. The FCC sees it as two call letter
 changes for two facilities.

I'm on the fence and looking for opinions on how this
 should be properly
 documented.

I can't vouch for this site, but it appears to have the manual as a zip
file, probably with a PDF inside: http://www.mods.dk/manual.php?brand=drake.

Only two minor corrections, regional stations arent always directional and
they CAN use as much as 50KW.

Otherwise, good article.

John,

This change seems to have taken place somewhere around March 4th this year,
changing from Standards to Spanish AC.

[IRCA] 1330 KCKM Monahans, TX

2007-12-14 Thread James Niven
I was tuned to 1330 this morning at 7;50am CST and I heard the usual KVOL in
Lafayette LA and KNSS Wichita KS. There was this country station with many
mentions of downtown Roswell and using slogans of Kickin Country. Checking
all the usual reference guides nothing matched. Around 08:20am nice clear ID
for KCKM in Monahans, TX. The NRC Log shows this as silent. I call the number
listed in the Log and spoke with a friendly gentlemen at length. I told him I
was listening here in Cedar Creek, Texas. He was surprised I heard their
station. He asked me what frequency am I listening to? He went on to say 1020
in Roswell NM KCKN is relay by KCKM 7am to 10am 7 day a week. I told him I was
tuned to 1330 khz and coming in pretty well. The station was purchased in Feb
2007 by the new owner and after a lot of work they began testing August 8th
2007. Offically they signed on August 17th 2007.

Well guys, make the required adjustments to your logs, so here is another to
look out for after being silent. They are Country with Kickin Country slogan.

  Thanks

[IRCA] 1700 KVNS, Brownsville Texas

2007-12-02 Thread James Niven
Hi All,

Looks like KVNS 1700 has changed format from Spanish to English 60's and 70's
Oldies now. I just tuned across the channel and noted oldies, absent is the
usually Spanish. Not sure when to change took place. The slogan I heard was
It's classic Rock n Roll for the work day, Oldies Radio 1700 KVNS.

  Thanks
