[IRCA] KKOL-1300 back on the air

2019-02-27 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
On my way to the Museum of Flight, I discovered KKOL-1300 back on the air with
Christian programming. They appeared to be on with lower power. The programming
included spots and Christian music, sort of regular schedule programming.

I Emailed the station re verification, here is the reply:

"We'd be happy to verify reports via off...@i1430.com, please put "TEST OF
SIGNAL" in the subject line, and allow a litlte time for us
to personally write back. We're a small staff, but have a big sound and what we
believe is great programming.  Please make sure to invite
DXers to enjoy us in REAL AM STEREO online via our apps (WION Radio) or our
website (www.i1430.com)  or with an amazon or google smart speaker.
We feed the web with a REAL AM STEREO tuner (Carver) and we're known for great
AM sound.

We periodically have our AM stereo expert engineer come to tune up our
processors and our transmitter, which was the purpose of this "test" but it
seemed to lend
some joy to those who enjoy distant listening, and we thank them for trying to
tune-in.

[IRCA] IRCA membership

2019-02-17 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Folks

At Bruce's GTG yesterday, it was mentioned that former IRCA members can "renew"
at no charge (in other words, they don't have to pay the $5.00 joining fee). I
signed up 3 folks at Bruce's that didn't realize this, so I thought it would be
a good idea to sent this notice to our eGroup.

Former IRCA members can be reinstated by contacting Lynn at
lynnholler...@yahoo.com with their Email address, and they will be added as
IRCA members. Pretty simple, eh?

Why not become a part of this growing group of AM DXers! Tell your friends, hi!

Re: [IRCA] Yet another!!

2019-01-17 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
One last time.

For those that have entered the IRCA contest, a call ID must be heard to count
the station. It's good to hear they are IDing, all I need to do is listen at
the right time, eh?

Identifying a station by using an internet parallel is easy, I've done it
several times, logging the station is fairly straightforward. Hearing a call ID
live has not been as easy.

Meanwhile, the Russian on 1130 is also in here very loud (again no IDs yet).
Interesting, that until they switch power/pattern at 1700 PLT, they dominate
the frequency here in Seattle. Odd, considering CKWX has been the "master" of
that frequency for years!!

I'm being haunted.
So, for the 3rd time, I'm listening to what sounds like Russian on 1520 with

talking just after the hour.

No break, no ID is it me or what??

[IRCA] 1390 Salem Oregon

2019-01-02 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I have a nemesis now.
According to the IRCA contest rules, I need to hear a call letter ID to count
it.

So for the last several tries at 6 PM local, I have heard the Spanish music
stop and then 5-10 seconds of dead air... which is where I assume the English
ID is supposed to be... then Spanish and another song happens.

So, is there anyone out there near Salem Oregon that can verify that they don't
ID at 6 PM?? Then again, perhaps they ID at a different time

Any ideas??

[IRCA] Introduction

2019-01-01 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

G’day. I thought it was time to sendsomething in. I am a 65 year old
retired Electrical Engineer. Most of mydesigns went in to sonar… and all of
them are now obsolete (by the timeelectronics get to manufacturing, they are
obsolete!) My design legacy is the“W” on the University of Washington Husky
football helmet. While I was incollege, I “worked” as a football manager (with
the equipment) and when DonJames became head coach, he wanted a new helmet
design. I did the “W” whichapparently caught on big time (too bad I didn’t get
royalties, hi). For thosewatching the Rose Bowl today!

I started DXing in 1968 when I entered acontest in Jr High to see who
could hear the most stations over a week’s time.I used an old console radio my
parents had retired and heard a few stations, butI was hooked! The fellow
running the contest told me about writing stations forverifications, so I
started doing that. My verification request to KOB was“canvassed” by Don
Erickson and I received a sample “DX Monitor”. Naturally, Ijoined and
discovered other DXers, some of whom lived near me! As of now, Ihave heard 2157
stations (I count call changes – most of my new stations thesedays).

I have used many different radios and antennasand have a modest collection
of them. My first DX radio was the “original”Radio Shack TRF along with a
Worcester Space Magnet ferrite loop antenna. Ihave used many communication
receivers; my favorite being a Drake R-7 and R-392as well as several loop
antennas (built a few too).

Recently, I have started DXing again (Ilisten on our car radio while my
wife is thrift shopping – some parking lotsare better than others, hi). I have
noticed a few things that have changedsince I was active. Almost all stations
have network programs during most ofthe hour, and there even more sports
stations than before. Station IDs are veryhard to get… not everyone IDs at the
top of the hour (especially ESPN!) andmost do not ID during the hour (bottom of
the hour IDs are almostnon-existent). Several stations use an FM frequency and
slogan in their pseudoIDs (the NRC log lists FM parallels now). A lot of spots
are not local, whichmakes me wonder if they are logged by the station?

One positive thing that has happened… theinternet. Most stations have
webcasts, which sometimes makes it possible todecide whether to stay on a
frequency to wait for an ID, or move on. I can noteparts of spots and then look
up the business on-line to verify spelling andthose few words that I missed.
Recently, I managed to get an Email verification(1 day turn around). Graveyard
frequencies are a mess (well they became thatway when most stations went to
1000 watts and are even worse now).

I’ve helped out IRCA in several ways overthe years. Currently, I am
Editor-in-Chief of “DX Monitor” and run the GoodieFactory (have you purchased
your Mexican Log yet?) Please send me any ideas forimproving the bulletin.

In addition to AM DXing, I collect radiostickers. I have over 45000 US and
Canadian in my collection (and even more totrade). I am actively seeking
stickers and will purchase collections, or extras, from other collectors. I
tradewith a few folks as well.

Best of DX to y’all from pb

There are quite a few TIS on 530 in this area. Check out the TIS/HAR list on
the IRCA web site for details. There are several in the Seattle area with
traffic information (I've heard most of them),

A new TIS/HAR list will be out in about a month or so.

There is another 530-TIS station in Puget Sound that you might try for if your

[IRCA] TIS/HAR list update

2018-06-16 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Folks,

I am working on an update for the IRCA TIS/HAR list. Currently checking FCC and
other on-line sources for updates. I will be going through eGroup traffic and
IRCA/NRC bulletins before publishing.

For those of you that have logged any TIS/HAR stations not reported to the
eGroup, I would like you to send me the information on your loggings. Include
at least the calls (or best guess), location, month and year of reception.

Send that information to me at phil_te...@yahoo.com... please do not post to
the eGroup.

Once completed, it will be posted on the IRCA web site for all to download at
no charge. Should be sometime in late July, early August.

receiving "DX Monitor" by 3rd class mail (I think).

I did some SW listening afterwards but found AM more interesting. I seem to
recall getting on Radio Havana Cuba's mailing list... but I don't recall every

If you recorded the MW band during last Monday's eclipse you might want to
check your recordings for the "eclipse propagation test" from 1360 WNAH,
Nashville, TN that was on the air during the eclipse. See Thomas Witherspoon's
blog for the details:
https://swling.com/blog/2017/08/wnahs-solar-eclipse-propagation-test/

They are looking for reports of reception and will QSL. I was able to hear
their morse code ID for two or three minutes right after totality here in
central Pennsylvania on my Perseus recording.

Day 2 started with a tour of the Kimmie Candies (free samples) tour. Then most
of the attendees did some local sight seeing. At 4:30 I conducted the annual
IRCA business meeting, committee reports were read (and given by those chairmen
attending). At 5:00 I read a statement prepared by the NRC Board in lieu of
their business meeting.5:20 gathered outside the hotel for the annual group
pictures... only a few were missing. Then onto the Black Bear Diner for our
banquet... ordering off their menu and exchanging ideas.Back to the hotel at
8:00 to prepare for our annual auction which started at around 8:30.After the
auction, some folks stayed around to chat until the meeting room closes at 11
PM.No "official" events planned for Sunday, several attendees heading home
early in the day, others staying an additional day for more sightseeing.
Much thanks to Mike Sanburn for organizing this event. A fill report (with
photos) will appear in a future DXM/DXN. Quite a few photos are already posted

[IRCA] IRCA/NRC/DecalcoMania convention, day 1

2017-08-18 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Day 1 of the combined convention went very smoothly.
Almost all of the attendees gathered at 10;30 for the KKOH tour... followed by
a lunch nearby and the 2nd tour at KPLY/KHIT/+. Both tours went very well and
most had returned to the hotel by 3:30.
Around 5:30 or so 12 of us went to the hotel restaurant for dinner (nearly
banquet #1)!!!
After that, we returned to our  meeting room for enthusiastic topical
discussions about DXing during the eclipse on Monday, followed by an equally
interesting discussion on SDR receivers (mostly focusing on what can be
recorded and how good are they compared to conventional receivers)
After that, small groups formed to discuss receivers, etc.

[IRCA] WIBA sticker

A bit OT here.
I remember someone asking me about a WIBA-1310 Brewers sticker that I had

dumb).
So, I have finally figured out that the sticker I got at the convention is an

[IRCA] TIS on 540

2015-05-20 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
I received a call today from a fellow in Sammamish re my reception of a TIS on
540 a few days ago. (I had left a phone message over the weekend.)

Seems I did hear Sammamish as they have recently activated their two
transmitters and are currently running the non-specific loop I heard.
Apparently, their engineer quit and they are waiting for a contract engineer to
help them finish setting up the station. So, for the time being, they are
running this generic loop.

Call is WQJW697 per recent TIS/HAR list.

with generic message. Presume in WA but TIS list doesn't show anything that
makes sense!! Guess I need to start an update of the list, hi!

[IRCA] 540 tonight

2015-05-15 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
Well, I was playing around with my SDR-IQ tonight and I heard two stations on
540.
N/S was WQIH850 in Burien, with a promo about the Wild Strawberry Festival
6/20-21, which I logged back in 2010.
E/W was a loop with NO ID stating that they were an Emergency broadcast station
authorized by the FCC to this community and that they were on 24 hours a day.
No clue who this might be, but the signal was about as strong as the Burien
station that looped N/S. No sign of CBK as it was probably too early for them.
Both these heard between 1850 and 2050 on 5/15 and were quite separate from
each other with the loop.

The band was pretty quiet (not quite sunset here)... and I discovered that I
have an intermittent connection in my Wellbrook loop coax connection that comes
and goes depending on how you wiggle the coax connector (so I have to go back
and forth between the antenna and PC while adjusting the loop - not fun at all,
hi). Note that the coax leads into a potted circuit, so just how am I supposed
to fix this (it's gotta be a simple fix 'cause it works just fine if I maneuver
it right)!!!

[IRCA] KRPA-1110 on the air

1110 kHz - You're listening to the Whale, KWLE 1340 in Anacortes and KRPA 1110
in Oak Harbor (wording may be slightly off as I didn't record it, hi). So,
both are on the air now. Interesting, I checked 1340 for // programming and
didn't hear it, some sort of talk station there instead.

[IRCA] Joint conventions this year.

2015-05-05 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
The idea of having West and East conventions is new this year, so please bear
with us. We are hoping this will result in more folks enjoying the fellowship
and events.

All DXers are invited to attend either or both conventions. Tours, talks and
food are planned at each site.

The first is in Fort Wayne IN on July 10-12 2015 and is hosted by Scott Fybush.
Contact him at sc...@fybush.com.

The second is in Torrance CA on Sept 10-Sat Sept 12 2015 and is hosted by Mike
Sanburn. Contact him at mikesanb...@yahoo.com.

The hosts really need to know who is planning to attend, even if tentative, so
they can plan the events.

So, please let them know soon.

Thanks... Phil Bytheway

KBRO definitely off now. They typically dominate the frequency here in N
Seattle.

Did not hear KLDY, KNTB or 1460-Kirkland today as well, although I didn't spend
enough time on frequency to be 100% sure. These are usually heard but usually
somewhat weak... and I didn't hear anything on my car radio.
Only heard sports on 1340, so perhaps Anacortes is also off.

Folks,Well, I finally decided that I would hook up my SDR-IQ to my new
laptop (old one died several months ago). After installing the SW I
connected it up... didn't work. Some .dll was missing (which I found)
  and things were finally working!!
So, I'm experimenting with the SpectraVue program and was able to tune
in to 700 (right next to KIRO-710). What I heard was ESPN
programming... so I decided to look up 700 on radio-locator.com to see
who might be ESPN these days. Two sports stations were listed (one in
WA, the other in UT), neither of which I haven't logged. I figured it
was probably the one in WA... but clearly needed to wait for an ID.
While waiting I checked the UT station website and listened to the live
broadcast, which was in parallel to what I was hearing on the SDR-IQ. I
was unable to get the live broadcast to work on the WA website. Anyway,
after two TOH attempts to ID it, I zoned off for the night.
So... anyone know when ESPN stations give their local IDs? I could have
sworn that no local ID was given between :55 and :05 either time. Of
course, there was some traditional fading around the TOH (and extra
splash from KIRO then as well (the SDR-IQ display showed an increase in
  stuff on 710 then).
So, this sums up my first attempt to DX in quite some time (my hearing
is failing now). I promise not to give up, but it is double frustrating
to have hard hearing on top of infrequent IDing!!
I plan to join the IRCA contest as in the past it has provided impetus
to DX. Since retiring in 2013, I have not done that much DXing as I no
longer listen during my commute, duh!

[IRCA] TP DX for 10/1 from Gary DeBock

2014-10-02 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
Hello All, What started out as a miserable session in the predawn darkness was
rescued somewhat by a late sunrise enhancement boost, which brought a couple of
big gun Asians out of the noise up to a respectable level. One of them even
managed to peg the PL-380 S/N briefly, in one of the strangest comebacks in
recent memory. The band was dreary indeed during the predawn darkness from
1250-1315, with only 738 (presumed BEL2) and 936 (presumed Anhui) flirting with
audio in a halfhearted way. Around 1320 there were weak signs of life from
594-JOAK, 603-HLSA, 747-JOIB and 972-HLCA, although none of them could sustain
their poor audio for more than a few seconds at a time. It was looking like the
first day of October might be a real clunker, when increasing sunlight around
1345 suddenly brought both 747-JOIB (with NHK2 Chinese lessons) and 972-HLCA
(with a Korean radio drama) out of the noise up to a good level. 747-JOIB
stayed at that level fighting the Portland splatter for the rest of sunrise
enhancement, but 972-HLCA just kept getting stronger, finally pegging the
PL-380 S/N display briefly around 1352. Other than these two diehards
657-Pyongyang and the 1053-Jammer also got some minor benefit from the late
Korean propagation surge, reaching fair audio in and out before t he band
collapsed around 1400. Best Asian audio of the morning (excellent) was from
972-HLCA around 1352-- which had been comatose for 90% of the session before
its late comeback. To put things in perspective, though, only a few big gun
Asians showed up with any kind of life this morning, and nothing remotely
exotic.  972  HLCA   Dangjin, S. Korea   Korean female-male speech and music at

[IRCA] DX Tests

2014-07-17 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
DX TESTS
Brandon Jordan – PO Box 338 – Rossville TN  38066
E-mail: bdjo...@gmail.com

Brandon Jordan is our new DX Tests co-ordinator, working for both IRCA and NRC.
He has established the above PO Box/email for correspondence. He is also
available at 901-592-9847 or FAX: 866-240-4221.

Brandon has registered dxtests.net url and will be working on getting a
Wordpress blog set up there in preparation for the upcoming season. He is also
anticipating former DX Test workers to be assisting him in his efforts. In
addition, he is also considering arranging DX tests on SW stations.

DX Tests are “arranged” with various AM stations across the US and Canada. A DX
Test broadcast would most likely be conducted sometime in the overnight hours,
between midnight and 6:00 am typically just after midnight, or just prior to 6
am. These are the best hours for an AM station to skip to distant locations.

DX Test broadcasts used to be popular during the early days of AM radio, and
they continue to this day. When done overnight, they’re perfectly within FCC
regulations, as is broadcasting with full authorized power under the
Experimental Hours rules of 47CFR73.72. In fact, stations have often combined
DX Tests with needed maintenance work or proof-of-performance testing, and
engineers have often told us that the reception reports they received indicated
the quality and strength of their signal, and gave them an opportunity to see
how far it travels under varying conditions.

Tests typically consist of tones and easily identifiable music such as marches,
polkas or anything else you might classify as eclectic. This kind of material
really cuts through the interference and makes a station easily recognizable.
Morse code identifications using a 1000 Hz modulated tone are also widely used.
Recordings for broadcast during a DX Test can be provided by our committee.

Please join us in welcoming Brandon on-board for the next DX season. We
anticipate hearing from him often.

[IRCA] IRCA TIS/HAR list in progress

2014-06-18 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
I am now working on the
update to the IRCA TIS/HAR list.

So far, I have
downloaded the FCC database and compared it to the “list in progress”. I
decided to add their “address” as location information which may help folks
find the station. I have converted the station coordinates to Decimal format,
which can be pasted into google/yahoo maps. I did a few spot checks of the
coordinates to the “address” and discovered that some of the coordinates were
“off”.
I then decided to check all the coordinates using google maps and have marked
those that are “off”. I indicated any differences I found.

Next step is to go
through the various eGroups and DX bulletins to check for TIS/HAR loggings.
Once that is done, the list will be ready to publish.

Plan is to publish the
list in freq/state/city/location order. If anyone would prefer a different
order, please let me know.

This edition should be
the best edition for being able to find the station.
Note: I used the “street
view” feature of google maps to check out several of the locations and was
actually able to “look” at the station!! I gathered a few pictures of the
various location types and may publish them in an article sometime in the
future.

Re: [IRCA] QRM from Lights

2014-05-19 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
Our neighbor decided to install a dimmer in their hallway so they could have a
dim night light. Turns out the noise caused by that dimmer made it's way into
our house via the common transformer on the pole between our houses.

I talked to someone at City Light and they told me that I should get a certain
brand (can't remember which - but it was many years ago so it's probably not
made anymore). They mentioned that this brand was made in Canada where they
have more restrictions on RFI emissions. This I did and replaced their dimmer
and the noise was gone.

Thus indicating that the regulations controlling emissions is the factor for
producing an item. Since it costs more to include emission suppression, it is
clear that unless the regulations force manufacturers to add it, they won't.

Now that the lights themselves are causing problems, the situation becomes more
of a necessity. I have also experienced loud buzzing from a fish tank heater
(the fellow moved so it's not a problem anymore) and I never found a solution
(so I'm glad he moved, hi.)

So they key is for us to figure out which devices have better RFI
suppression... and it wouldn't hurt to have a reference for DXers to know what
to get. We can start by providing feedback to our eGroup on what works and what
doesn't.
