Re: [IRCA] dx dead spots

2017-03-15 Thread Richard Allen
I’m fortunate enough to live in an area of excellent ground conductivity.
Ground wave DX into surrounding states is very good at mid-day. My guess is it
has something to do with the Port Silt Loam (Red Dirt) that cover much of
Oklahoma. It’s a significant enough feature of the region to have been named
the official state soil.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 12/3/16

2016-12-03 Thread Richard Allen
It was a bit of a hit and miss DX session here with too many of the latter.
But overall the best morning for awhile (LSR @ 1326 GMT).

567 JOIK? a trace of a signal (no audio) at 1228-1230, nothing later.
594 JOAK a barely audible-to-poor signal fading in and out from 1213 until 1334.
692 JOAB unreadable audio in KGGF-690 slop at 1330.
702 unID carrier from NW at 1311.
747 JOIB poor on SDR at 1131; barely audible with KNNJ splatter at 1223 & 1315
on ULR.
774 JOUB audible at 1118 to 1318 fading in and out, occasionally peaking at
fair-to-good. Best signal from JOUB since September, even audible on barefoot
PL-310 for a time.
827 JOBB? het at 1228, very strong (sadly no audio) at 1330
972 HLCA? weak het in KCFO-970 QRM at 1322.
1566 HLAZ barely audible in XERF-1570 splash at 1300-1310;
1593 unID (CNR?) traces of a signal at 1325.
No signals detected on 603, 657, 1053, 1134 1206 or 1503 when checked/

I finally resorted to using my old faithful PL-310 which was used barefoot to
logged many of the Asian signals heard in 2009-2010.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 11/22/16

2016-11-22 Thread Richard Allen
While not as good as yesterday, several TP signals were heard here this morning
(LSR @ 1316 GMT).

594 JOAK signal was barely audible-to-poor at 1327, continued to be heard until
fade out at 1334 (18 minutes past sunrise).
774 JOUB poor-to-fair at 1128; poor at 1157; poor at 1223.
828 JOBB het in WCCO-830 slop at 1254 and 1327.
1566 HLAZ barely-to-poor at 1314-1319.

Traces of signals (no audio) on 567, 693, 747 and 1593. No signal heard on
972, 1053 and 1323 when checked.

I wasted too much time monitoring 1593 act sunrise hearing nothing.

Hopefully reception is better at your QTH. Good day.

Re: [IRCA] If Skywave Protection for Class A's was Ended, Would That be Good for DX'ers or Bad?

2016-11-21 Thread Richard Allen
While that is true, what’s the logic in overcrowding the airwaves? Where will
be the profit in more stations with fewer listeners per station. I don’t how
they are surviving in the current mire. With few exceptions, AM radio stations
aren’t worth listening to most of the time. Most around here broadcast nothing
but syndicated conservative talk shows, while others carry sports talk, or
preachers. Very few with any entertainment. Sadly AM broadcasters are
migrating to FM rapidly filling up that band.

How I long for the good old days. I guess we should blame it on my age! I can
remember what it was like in the late 1940’s and 50’s before TV made an impact.
Now it’s computers and most of the youth of today don’t listened to AM radio,
probably even FM.

2016-11-21 Thread Richard Allen
I’m hoping it improves more in the next few days. I’ll probably be watching
1593 kHz more closely than in the past.

Not only were there better medium wave signals from Asia this morning, but also
on short wave. The Voice of Korea is normally received here with an poor
unlistenable signal on 9435 kHz. This morning the propaganda is fair-to-good
at 1530 GMT on the ATS909X / ALA1530LNP combo. The signal sounds like it’s
either being jammed or has modulation problems!

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/17/16

2016-10-17 Thread Richard Allen
It was probably the worst DX morning thus far since late last month. Once
again, there were no signals from Asia.
612 unID (4QR?) weak carrier at 1226, QRM: KCSP-610. Het audible on barefoot
SRF-T615 at 1204.
702 2BL weak carrier at 1224, QRM: “La Poderosa:, XEGD-700.
738 unID het at 0944, QRM: “Zoomer Radio” CFZM-740.
774 3LO barely audible man talking at 1238-1239 (LSR 1240).
1098 unID (V7AB?) het at 0959 & 1054, QRM: WTAM-1100. Music heard from
1116-1130 (probably an unID 1100 kHz signal).

The morning wasn’t a total goner! though. I managed to hear KDAL-610, Duluth
MN, for the first time on my SRF-T615. I was surprised the signal made it
passed KCSP and XEGS.

Have a good day.

Re: [IRCA] Slightly OT - the Best film about Shortwave radio in production.

2016-10-13 Thread Richard Allen
Colin:

Thanks for the post.

A short wave broadcast from the CBC IS (later RCI) station at Sackville was the
very first I heard. It was a late Sunday afternoon in winter and I was
listening on an old receiver found in the upstairs of my grandmother’s house.
The broadcast contained a mailbag program hosted by Earle Fisher, and the
frequency was 11.72 Mc/s. Surprising what I still remember! I became a
regular listener of the service until the end.

Interestingly, while I was stationed in England a few years later, I heard my
first trans-Atlantic medium wave DX from CBA-1070, Sackville.

The QSL cards from those two broadcasts are among my most treasured.

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/5/16

2016-10-05 Thread Richard Allen
Gary:

I didn’t hear anything on 567 kHz, but the PL-380’s S/N indicator was showing a
signal.

I got lucky hearing 3LO on Sunday. I couldn’t understand the talking on the
program, but there was a passage of distinctive sounding Tibetan music that
matched the simulcast on Radio Australia. Later I downloaded a podcast from
the ABC to compare. There is no doubt that I heard the station.

Unfortunately I couldn’t do the same after with 4BC yesterday. Due to the weak
signal and QRN it was justl unintelligent talk by a man. I’m pretty sure it was
English. There was a brief announcement by a woman that coincided with what
was on the internet. Even after running the recording passed Audacity and
iTunes several time I couldn’t tell what I had heard. So I’m only listing the
4BC ID as tentative. I can’t believe it’s only 6.3 kW at night. I briefly had
a inaudible signal on 1016 kHz at sunset in Brisbane this morning.

I feel Tahiti on 738 kHz is nearly impossible because of the inference on 740
kHz. At night, I mostly hear near-by KRMG (25 kW) and CFZM (50 kW) with an
occasional XE from south of the border. The same is true of 4QR on 612.
KCSP-610 is audible 24/7 and pretty much impossible to null toward Australia.
There is also XEGS in Sinaloa.

Because of the distance and super powered signals, it’s easier to hear Asians.

Good DX.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/12/12

2012-10-12 Thread Richard Allen
The only signals detected here this morning were hets coming from the southwest
on 558 (Qld?), 612 (4QR?) and 702 (2BL?). The strongest being on 558 kHz.
Reception was hampered by a local thunderstorm.

Receiver: Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch plug-in ferrite loop.

Good DX all.

I listened to 670 this morning (9/22/11) again hearing La Voz Consuelo at

Does anyone know the identity of La Voz Consuelo heard on 670 kHz?

It was heard 9/21/11, from 1129 until fade out at 1203 UTC, on 670 kHz playing
música ranchera with several La Voz Consuelo ID's, but no call or QTH. I
assume it's either XETRO or XEIS.

Re: [IRCA] PL-606 LW/MW plug-in antenna mod?

2011-05-04 Thread Richard Allen
Stephen:

I think the closest you will get to a schematic is the PL-606 Functional Block
Diagram in the Operation Manual that came with the receiver.

I attempted the mod by re-routing the antenna wire via the two points indicated
in the photo provided by Gary DeBock. It didn't work, I don't know whether it
was something I did wrong or that the SW/FM antenna jack is not connected
there. I've not heard from anyone who has completing this mod on the PL-606,
only the PL-310.

If you try it again please keep us posted on your success. Good luck and 73's.

Anyone by any chance know if there's a schematic or something available for
the PL-606?
My dad I were probing in it with a multimeter and a couple other tools,
trying to figure out what's what. We did figure out a few things with the FM
antenna, but non-radio issues prevented us from doing much with the AM at that
time so I put the radio back together for now.
I sure hope someone either knows how to do the mod, or has a schematic or
something (so we could more easily figure out how to do it), but if I'm the
first one to successfully do it, hopefully I'll remember to take and post
notes/photos.

I'm kinda curious as to how much ground WNAX can cover in the daytime. From
roadtrips I've done in recent years, I've been able to note the following --

Iowa City, IA 8/28/2002 Good signal, 3 on a scale of 1 (faint) to 5
  (local)

Custer, SD 10/3/2002 Poor signal, rate it a 2
Otter Tail Lake, MN 8/2/2008 Very good signal, rate it a 3 1/2
Grand Forks, ND 8/3/2008 Good signal, rate it a 3
Salina, KS 5/31/2010 Fair signal, rate it a 2 1/2 (through
  lots of WIBW splash)
Washington, MO 4/16/2011 Not there at all
Jefferson City, MO 4/17/2011 Still not there, until...
Boonville, MO 4/17/2011 Faint, rate it a 1

So that should give you some idea of what their daytime coverage looks like.
Not quite as big as CBK or KFYR, but still pretty impressive.

All times and dates strictly UT. MW log editors are welcome to excerpt items,
reformat and change to favorite timezone if necessary. Rx: mostly DX-398 with
internal antenna only; some caradio as specified; above 2 MHz on FRG-7 with
110-foot east-west longwire.

** OKLAHOMA. Tulsa monitoring: Bruce Winkelman there found KGTO-1050 dead
air, open carrier, all morning Feb 26, but had resumed when I tuned in at 1945
UT, KGTO ID with good-time oldies.

At 1720 UT he found 1270, 1530 and 1570 not in //, with different Spanish
music; but at 2105 UT, 1570 and 1270 seemed // to me, switching back and forth
on one caradio, while 1530 was buried by KOKC splash. He and I agree that 1120
KEOR remains off the air for weeks (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Since I`m not sure if he has posted a follow-up one week later
elsewhere, here`s more from Bruce Winkelman:

  Tulsa radio Saturday 05MAR11:

1050 KGTO again with dead air OC 1415-1435Z, regular programming at 2315Z.
1270 KRVT and 1570 KZLI definitely // with Spanish programming
  1530 KXTD Spanish religious programming
1430 KTBZ IBOC blessedly silent 1430Z!, IBOC still off at 2315Z on drive
home. Sister station 1300 KAKC IBOCing away as usual.
1120 KEOR nowhere to be found 1430Z or 2315Z
1380 KMUS still place-holding with the same Broadway show tunes 2315Z, not
yet on at 1430Z.
(Bruce Winkelman, Tulsa, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

I also noticed 1530 was the odd station out while 1270 still // 1570,
sometime during the day on March 4 or 5 (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

  ** U S A. 720, WGN, UT Thursday March 3 at 0529, looking for `Extension 720`,
but instead, stupid sports talk! Since E720 shifted an hour later to 04-06 UT
weeknights it should be pre-empted less for ballgames, so I am apprehensive it
has finally been canceled as too intellexual for commercial radio. Whew,
checking website:
  http://www.wgnradio.com/shows/ext720/

``(Wednesday, March 2) No program tonight -- preempted by Hockey. But we will
be back tomorrow with a great panel of Middle-east experts and strategic
scholars as we focus in on the popular revolts in Libya, Yemen, Bahrein,
Jordan, etc.``

Anyway, WGN was in its usual 720 battle with Spanish and SAH from KSAH in San
Antonio, making weblistening preferable if possible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

  ** U S A. 2390, WWRB, Feb 27 at 0027 preacher talking about Yahweh, VG
signal, much better than // 5050, but 2390 accompanied by buzzy envelope out to
2375-2405, worst peaks circa 2380 and 2400. This happens at times to WWRB on
9385, presumably same transmitter. 2390 still not on all-night, at 0550 check,
probably closing at 0500.

Dave Frantz`s latest Feb 26 comments to me:

``Greetings: Some tidbits: Most everyone by now owns a digital shortwave
radio that can tune the 2390. We are receiving GREAT reports. We are VERY
pleased. Don't forget the 2.390 MHz, 340 degree rhombic antenna is almost 200
feet high; trying to use a rhombic antenna less than 160 feet high is a waste
of time on these frequencies. We are changing 5050 antenna to our 045 degree
rhombic, in anticipation of the longer daylight hours coming up.`` (Glenn

1314: 1566 and 1611 ---

The last looped WSW instead of NW like the others, which fits for Australia,
where WRTH lists 17 ``high-power open narrowcast stations``, HP meaning max 400
watts! And there are no Asians or other Pacificans on 1611. I double-checked
the frequency and it was right on 1611, so unlikely to have been a US TIS
variant. Still, it`s hard to believe I would even be getting such a carrier.
The 100 kW VL8s on 120m were not audible today.

In my scans there may be others only 1 kHz from 10-kHz channels which I
simply can`t detect due to the QRM; thus those logged above end in -2, -3, -4,
-5, -6, -7, or -8. But 1610, of course, has no broadcasters of normal power in
the US, just HAR/TIS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Tone test on 1590 noted again this evening at 9:15pm CST, off at
10pm and back on a few minutes later. This is the fourth day it
  has been heard up here.

If this is not WVNA then it must
be a station close to Steve Francis in Alcoa, Tenn. who reported it
last night as STRONG and in a N/S
  direction. Perhaps in
  west Georgia??

  South of Steve are two
possibilities (from old NRC Log) WALG Albany, WTGA Thomaston
with a third, WQCH Lafayette less likely, which is
  more
  westerly.

significance. Propagaton this morning seemed to favor signals from Mexico.

Subject: [IRCA] John Bryant's NRD-535D / Timewave DSP / Portable CaseReceiver
Setup on Ebay

Was I ever surprised today to see the late John Bryant's portable JRC
NRD-535D rackmount case setup for auction on Ebay. This project of
interconnected NRD-535D, twin Timewave DSP-9+ units, S-meter, and audio
switching network inside of a portable rackmount case was John's primary
DXpedition receiver before he got hooked on the Winradio SDR receivers. I
spent many hours on Grayland DXpeditions with John, sitting across from him
and this fine receiver and accessory setup:

http://cgi.ebay.com/JRC-NRD-535-D-Receiver-Timewave-DSP9-anvil-case-/270677363746

The Austin, Texas seller says he purchased the equipment at a radio auction,
but has decided not to keep it. I contacted the seller to let him know about
John Bryant and the background of this one-of-a-kind setup.

The receiver has a couple of Kiwa filter modules inside, and I am almost
certain it has *all *other Kiwa modifications for the NRD-535D, too. I
remember that John had spoken of sending it to Craig at Kiwa Electronics for
  full house mods.

The white/translucent rectangles that can be seen stuck on the receiver's
main tuning knob are chunks of heavy duty, sticky-backed snap fastener
material. I'm sure these can be peeled off and the remaining goo cleaned
off satisfactorily. John used the fastener material to hold his spin wheel
attachment for easier tuning. I don't believe this flat plate with finger
hole (which extended beyond the tuning knob) is included with the auction.

Thanks. I'm only listing it as tentative. It's a conflict of I'm sure, but
not sure. There was definitely a signal breaking through on 1566. But it was
barely audible, fading in and out under the lower sideband of 1570 XERF

followed by man speaking in an Asian language, maybe Japanese. I've listened
to the recording several time but it doesn't change anything.

774 JOUB Akita J, 1107-1134, brief patches of audio fading in out, never at

I listened for TP signals at 1231-1322 UTC. Only heard weak carriers
(heterodynes) on 594, 693, 774, 828, 872 and 1566. I hope things improve by
the time those listening on the west coast wake-up. Have a good weekend.

TP signals were better, and different, this morning.

Receiver: Modified Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick. Local sunrise at
1309 UTC.

  594 JOAK Tokyo J, 1241-1326, fair.
693 JOAB Tokyo J, 1245-1319, fair; het fading away at 1317.
  702 unID, 1223, weak het.
  774 JOUB Akita J, 1214-1322, fair.
828 JOBB Osaka J, 1231, strong het; 1307, man JJ, poor.
873 JOGB Kumamoto J, 1304, man JJ, fair.
972 unID (HLCA?), 1211, weak het (QRM: KBUL 970); 1252, ear splitting het
(QRM: XEJ 970).
1053 unID, 1255, weak carrier; 1310, barely audible talk, fading away at 1311.
1134 JOQR Tokyo J, 1257-1258, man JJ, poor.
1242 unID (JOLF?), 1309, weak het; 1316, fair het.

Signals seemed to benefit from a sunrise lift with JOAB/JOAK/JOUB being
heard later than before this fall. I wish I'd listened more closely to 1053
kHz. Overall, anytime I can hear Asian signals in Oklahoma is considered pretty
good.

I hope the folks west of me have a good morning of TP DX.

the Algerians on 531 and 549 upgraded. 531 SS was behind Algeria on 531 in WI

  Tom,

Most likely Algeria but Spain is also a good possibility and Kaz reported
many Spaniards last night from his DX Shack in Grafton, WI. Keep trying and
also check 549 for Algeria which is usually stronger than 531 here on the East
Coast.

Around 1027utc this morning I got first audio of the season on an OTP [over
the pole] TP. 639kHz with woman in what sounds like an English lesson:

  http://realmonitor.com/stations/japan-693a.wav

Other carriers on 945, 873, 774 and 747 but 693 was definitely the best this
morning.

Have to listen to the Perseus wav's some more tonight as there might be audio
on 945 too.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/8/10

2010-11-08 Thread Richard Allen
Not much to report from earlier this morning. At 1158 UTC, I heard a man
speaking in Japanese on 774 kHz, but the signal soon faded out. The only other
signal audible was a carrier (het) on 702 kHz.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/7/10

2010-11-07 Thread Richard Allen
TP signals weren't as good here this morning as yesterday. Local sunrise was
at 1259 UTC.

693 JOAB Tokyo J, 1254, weak JJ audio //JOIB 747. Audio faded out 1313.
702 unID (possibly Chongjin KRE), 1155, carrier (het). Raspy carrier at 1232
with QRM from KHSE 700. Signal faded out at 1259.
747 JOIB Sapporo J, 1114, JJ audio. Audible off and on until fading out at
1310.
774 JOUB Akita J, 1102, JJ audio. Signal had a sunrise lift, not fading out
until 1310. The carrier was audible to 1315.
828 unID (probably JOBB), 1239, het below XEIK 830.
891 unID, 1241, het.
972 unID (probably HLCA), 1225, weak het.

The raspy carrier signal on 702 kHz was possibly from North Korea. It faded
away at sunrise.

After the Asian signals faded out, I listened to XETCH 700 from 1320 until it
faded away under KHSE at 1345.

Receiver was a Tecsun PL-310 ultralight attached to a 7.5-inch loopstick.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/6/10

2010-11-06 Thread Richard Allen
After seeing the report from Alabama, my observations may be somewhat
anticlimatic. TP signals received here were the best since late September.
Using a Tecsun PL-310 ultralight receiver attached to a 7.5-inch loopstick, I
listen at 1119-1310 UTC. Local sunrise was at 1258.

Carrier from the direction of 320° were audible on 558, 648, 702, 819, 828, and
891, also possibly on 666 and 1134. Audio was heard from JOAK 594, JOAB 693,
JOIB 747, JOUB 774, HLCA 972 and unID (HLAZ?) 1566.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/5/10

2010-11-05 Thread Richard Allen
Listening at 1216-1311 UTC, I found TP signals were improved here this morning.
 Carrier signals were noted on 558, 648, 693, 702, 738, 828, 891, 972, 1134 and
1242. The hets on 828 and 972 were very strong at sunrise (1257 UTC). JOIB
747 and JOUB 774 were heard with Basic English lessons, sometimes at fair
strength.

Receiver: Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/2/10

2010-11-02 Thread Richard Allen
It was another rotten morning for hearing TP signals in the heartland.
Listening at 1225-1304 UTC, I heard carriers, but no audio, on 558, 648, 702,
774, 792, 828 and 972 kHz. The signals on 828 and 972 were the strongest.
Receiver: Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick. Local sunrise at 1254 UTC.

I listened briefly last evening and heard barely audible talk on 1215 kHz after
0619 UTC.

2010-11-01 Thread Richard Allen
Simply the worst morning for TP DX here this fall. Between 1216 and 1302 UTC,
a few carriers (hets) audible on 648, 702, 774, 972 and 1134. With the
exception of 972 kHz, all were weak.

Receiver: Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick. Local sunrise was at 1252 UTC.

I hope the morning was better for you.

2010-11-01 Thread Richard Allen
Gary:

As I've said in the past, the west coast DXers have some advantages over those
of us inland. Surprisingly, this morning the best of signals were not from
Japan, but 648 and 972 kHz. I haven't listened to the recording, but there was
something happening on 1134 for the first time this fall. Until tomorrow.

Good DX.

Richard.

  Hi Richard,

Sorry that the TP's didn't come out of the noise for you this morning.
They certainly have been shy, recently.

Apparently the sun got its act together before the west coast sunrise this
morning, though, and we had several fairly good Asian signals. 639-CNR1
made its first decent appearance in about 2 weeks, along with a few other
common TP's. Hopefully these will show up for you also, tomorrow.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 10/31/10

2010-10-31 Thread Richard Allen
TP's signals received here this morning were nothing to brag about.

Receiver was Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick. Local sunrise was at 1252
UTC.

558 unID, 1237, carrier.
693 JOAB Tokyo J, 1221-1226, man talking JJ, moderate KGGF 690 slop. That was
the best spot of the morning. Het heard at 1256, fading away by 1257.
702 unID, 1238, weak carrier.
774 unID (JOUB?), 1214, weak carrier. Heard fading in out throughout the
session.
792 unID, 1240, weak carrier (het).
828 unID (JOBB?), 1241, carrier, stronger than 774. Slight het still audible
at 1302.
972 unID (HLCA?), 1230, slight het. Stronger at 1243,

Last evening, I heard F'kirina ALG on 531, at 0326, with AA talk. Hets were
also audible on 549, 909 and 1089 kHz.

Good day.
