I’m fortunate enough to live in an area of excellent ground conductivity. Ground wave DX into surrounding states is very good at mid-day. My guess is it has something to do with the Port Silt Loam (Red Dirt) that cover much of Oklahoma. It’s a significant enough feature of the region to have been named the official state soil. [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 12/3/16
It was a bit of a hit and miss DX session here with too many of the latter. But overall the best morning for awhile (LSR @ 1326 GMT). 567 JOIK? a trace of a signal (no audio) at 1228-1230, nothing later. 594 JOAK a barely audible-to-poor signal fading in and out from 1213 until 1334. 692 JOAB unreadable audio in KGGF-690 slop at 1330. 702 unID carrier from NW at 1311. 747 JOIB poor on SDR at 1131; barely audible with KNNJ splatter at 1223 & 1315 on ULR. 774 JOUB audible at 1118 to 1318 fading in and out, occasionally peaking at fair-to-good. Best signal from JOUB since September, even audible on barefoot PL-310 for a time. 827 JOBB? het at 1228, very strong (sadly no audio) at 1330 972 HLCA? weak het in KCFO-970 QRM at 1322. 1566 HLAZ barely audible in XERF-1570 splash at 1300-1310; 1593 unID (CNR?) traces of a signal at 1325. No signals detected on 603, 657, 1053, 1134 1206 or 1503 when checked/ I finally resorted to using my old faithful PL-310 which was used barefoot to logged many of the Asian signals heard in 2009-2010. [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 11/22/16
While not as good as yesterday, several TP signals were heard here this morning (LSR @ 1316 GMT). 594 JOAK signal was barely audible-to-poor at 1327, continued to be heard until fade out at 1334 (18 minutes past sunrise). 774 JOUB poor-to-fair at 1128; poor at 1157; poor at 1223. 828 JOBB het in WCCO-830 slop at 1254 and 1327. 1566 HLAZ barely-to-poor at 1314-1319. Traces of signals (no audio) on 567, 693, 747 and 1593. No signal heard on 972, 1053 and 1323 when checked. I wasted too much time monitoring 1593 act sunrise hearing nothing. Re: [IRCA] If Skywave Protection for Class A's was Ended, Would That be Good for DX'ers or Bad?
While that is true, what’s the logic in overcrowding the airwaves? Where will be the profit in more stations with fewer listeners per station. I don’t how they are surviving in the current mire. With few exceptions, AM radio stations aren’t worth listening to most of the time. Most around here broadcast nothing but syndicated conservative talk shows, while others carry sports talk, or preachers. Very few with any entertainment. Sadly AM broadcasters are migrating to FM rapidly filling up that band. How I long for the good old days. I guess we should blame it on my age! I can remember what it was like in the late 1940’s and 50’s before TV made an impact. Now it’s computers and most of the youth of today don’t listened to AM radio, probably even FM. Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 11/21/16
I’m hoping it improves more in the next few days. I’ll probably be watching 1593 kHz more closely than in the past. Not only were there better medium wave signals from Asia this morning, but also on short wave. The Voice of Korea is normally received here with an poor unlistenable signal on 9435 kHz. This morning the propaganda is fair-to-good at 1530 GMT on the ATS909X / ALA1530LNP combo. The signal sounds like it’s either being jammed or has modulation problems! [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/17/16
It was probably the worst DX morning thus far since late last month. Once again, there were no signals from Asia. 612 unID (4QR?) weak carrier at 1226, QRM: KCSP-610. Het audible on barefoot SRF-T615 at 1204. 702 2BL weak carrier at 1224, QRM: “La Poderosa:, XEGD-700. 738 unID het at 0944, QRM: “Zoomer Radio” CFZM-740. 774 3LO barely audible man talking at 1238-1239 (LSR 1240). 1098 unID (V7AB?) het at 0959 & 1054, QRM: WTAM-1100. Music heard from 1116-1130 (probably an unID 1100 kHz signal). The morning wasn’t a total goner! though. I managed to hear KDAL-610, Duluth MN, for the first time on my SRF-T615. I was surprised the signal made it passed KCSP and XEGS. Have a good day. Re: [IRCA] Slightly OT - the Best film about Shortwave radio in production.
Colin: Thanks for the post. A short wave broadcast from the CBC IS (later RCI) station at Sackville was the very first I heard. It was a late Sunday afternoon in winter and I was listening on an old receiver found in the upstairs of my grandmother’s house. The broadcast contained a mailbag program hosted by Earle Fisher, and the frequency was 11.72 Mc/s. Surprising what I still remember! I became a regular listener of the service until the end. Interestingly, while I was stationed in England a few years later, I heard my first trans-Atlantic medium wave DX from CBA-1070, Sackville. The QSL cards from those two broadcasts are among my most treasured. Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/5/16
Gary: I didn’t hear anything on 567 kHz, but the PL-380’s S/N indicator was showing a signal. I got lucky hearing 3LO on Sunday. I couldn’t understand the talking on the program, but there was a passage of distinctive sounding Tibetan music that matched the simulcast on Radio Australia. Later I downloaded a podcast from the ABC to compare. There is no doubt that I heard the station. Unfortunately I couldn’t do the same after with 4BC yesterday. Due to the weak signal and QRN it was justl unintelligent talk by a man. I’m pretty sure it was English. There was a brief announcement by a woman that coincided with what was on the internet. Even after running the recording passed Audacity and iTunes several time I couldn’t tell what I had heard. So I’m only listing the 4BC ID as tentative. I can’t believe it’s only 6.3 kW at night. I briefly had a inaudible signal on 1016 kHz at sunset in Brisbane this morning. I feel Tahiti on 738 kHz is nearly impossible because of the inference on 740 kHz. At night, I mostly hear near-by KRMG (25 kW) and CFZM (50 kW) with an occasional XE from south of the border. The same is true of 4QR on 612. KCSP-610 is audible 24/7 and pretty much impossible to null toward Australia. There is also XEGS in Sinaloa. Because of the distance and super powered signals, it’s easier to hear Asians. Good DX. Re: [IRCA] PL-606 LW/MW plug-in antenna mod?
Stephen: I think the closest you will get to a schematic is the PL-606 Functional Block Diagram in the Operation Manual that came with the receiver. I attempted the mod by re-routing the antenna wire via the two points indicated in the photo provided by Gary DeBock. It didn't work, I don't know whether it was something I did wrong or that the SW/FM antenna jack is not connected there. I've not heard from anyone who has completing this mod on the PL-606, only the PL-310. If you try it again please keep us posted on your success. Good luck and 73's. Richard. We did figure out a few things with the FM antenna, but non-radio issues prevented us from doing much with the AM at that time so I put the radio back together for now. I sure hope someone either knows how to do the mod, or has a schematic or something (so we could more easily figure out how to do it), but if I'm the first one to successfully do it, hopefully I'll remember to take and post notes/photos. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

This project of interconnected NRD-535D, twin Timewave DSP-9+ units, S-meter, and audio switching network inside of a portable rackmount case was John's primary DXpedition receiver before he got hooked on the Winradio SDR receivers. I spent many hours on Grayland DXpeditions with John, sitting across from him and this fine receiver and accessory setup: http://cgi.ebay.com/JRC-NRD-535-D-Receiver-Timewave-DSP9-anvil-case-/270677363746 The Austin, Texas seller says he purchased the equipment at a radio auction, but has decided not to keep it. I contacted the seller to let him know about John Bryant and the background of this one-of-a-kind setup. The receiver has a couple of Kiwa filter modules inside, and I am almost certain it has *all *other Kiwa modifications for the NRD-535D, too. I remember that John had spoken of sending it to Craig at Kiwa Electronics for full house mods. The white/translucent rectangles that can be seen stuck on the receiver's main tuning knob are chunks of heavy duty, sticky-backed snap fastener material. I'm sure these can be peeled off and the remaining goo cleaned off satisfactorily. John used the fastener material to hold his spin wheel attachment for easier tuning. I don't believe this flat plate with finger hole (which extended beyond the tuning knob) is included with the auction. [IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/25/10
TP signal propagation to this part of the planet was about the same as yesterday. I listened on my Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick from 1107 to 1327 UTC. Local sunrise was at 1317 UTC. 747 JOIB Sapporo J, 1203, woman talking fading away 1204, hvy QRM from KRMG 740 WSB 750. 774 JOUB Akita J, 1107-1134, brief patches of audio fading in out, never at a comfortable listening level. Carriers (hets) were noticed on 558, 594, 693, 702, 792, 828, 972 (trace only) and 1566. The latter was just below the audible threshold at sunrise with slop from XERF 1570. Happy Thanksgiving to all. [IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/24/10
I must say I'd been better off sleeping in this morning. I started listening earlier hearing a man talking in JJ on 774 kHz at 1030 UTC. The signal faded in and out until 1059, and was never at a comfortable listening level. JOUB audio was again heard at 1220-1224. Otherwise, it was only a few slight hets on 567, 594, 774, 828 and 972 kHz. Overall the TP signals were weaker than the past few morning, more like what is expected here in February. Usually this time of year has some of the best TP reception here. However, this morning was one of the worst since late summer. Hets (no audio) on 774 and 828 kHz a few minutes before 1315 sunrise. I also notice skywave signals faded away promptly after local sunrise. Normally this time of year they are sometime heard to mid-morning. CKRM 620 CKOM 650 were audible this morning. Several SK stations are heard most nights. I usually catch my Canadian news from CBW 990 from MB. It's well heard hear most nights. ON stations are harder to hear, usually only CFZM most nights battleing with nearby KRMG. Let's keep our fingers crossed for things to improve during the week. Good DX. There wasn't much to be heard here as far as TP signals are concerned. Barely audible JJ talk was heard on 594 and 693 kHz around sunrise (1313 UTC). Re: [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 21 Nov 2010
A fantastic report. I've never heard any Aussie MW stations here. But this morning I managed to hear VL8A, 2310 (poor), and parallel VL8T, 2325 (barely audible), around 1330 UTC, on a barefoot Tecsun PL-606 ultralight receiver. TP signals weren't as good here this morning as yesterday. Local sunrise was at 1259 UTC. 693 JOAB Tokyo J, 1254, weak JJ audio //JOIB 747. Audio faded out 1313. 702 unID (possibly Chongjin KRE), 1155, carrier (het). Raspy carrier at 1232 with QRM from KHSE 700. Signal faded out at 1259. 747 JOIB Sapporo J, 1114, JJ audio. Audible off and on until fading out at 1310. 774 JOUB Akita J, 1102, JJ audio. Signal had a sunrise lift, not fading out until 1310. The carrier was audible to 1315. 828 unID (probably JOBB), 1239, het below XEIK 830. 891 unID, 1241, het. 972 unID (probably HLCA), 1225, weak het. The raspy carrier signal on 702 kHz was possibly from North Korea. It faded away at sunrise. After the Asian signals faded out, I listened to XETCH 700 from 1320 until it faded away under KHSE at 1345. Receiver was a Tecsun PL-310 ultralight attached to a 7.5-inch loopstick. [IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/6/10
After seeing the report from Alabama, my observations may be somewhat anticlimatic. TP signals received here were the best since late September. Using a Tecsun PL-310 ultralight receiver attached to a 7.5-inch loopstick, I listen at 1119-1310 UTC. Local sunrise was at 1258. Carrier from the direction of 320° were audible on 558, 648, 702, 819, 828, and 891, also possibly on 666 and 1134. It was another rotten morning for hearing TP signals in the heartland. Listening at 1225-1304 UTC, I heard carriers, but no audio, on 558, 648, 702, 774, 792, 828 and 972 kHz. Simply the worst morning for TP DX here this fall. Between 1216 and 1302 UTC, a few carriers (hets) audible on 648, 702, 774, 972 and 1134. With the exception of 972 kHz, all were weak. Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/1/10
Gary: As I've said in the past, the west coast DXers have some advantages over those of us inland. Surprisingly, this morning the best of signals were not from Japan, but 648 and 972 kHz. I haven't listened to the recording, but there was something happening on 1134 for the first time this fall. Until tomorrow. Good DX. TP's signals received here this morning were nothing to brag about. Receiver was Tecsun PL-310 with 7.5-inch loopstick. Local sunrise was at 1252 UTC. 558 unID, 1237, carrier. 693 JOAB Tokyo J, 1221-1226, man talking JJ, moderate KGGF 690 slop. That was the best spot of the morning. Het heard at 1256, fading away by 1257. 702 unID, 1238, weak carrier. 774 unID (JOUB?), 1214, weak carrier. Heard fading in out throughout the session. 792 unID, 1240, weak carrier (het). 828 unID (JOBB?), 1241, carrier, stronger than 774. Slight het still audible at 1302. 972 unID (HLCA?), 1230, slight het. Stronger at 1243, Last evening, I heard F'kirina ALG on 531, at 0326, with AA talk.
