[IRCA] AM stations with "Limited Time" day-power designations

2019-03-13 Thread Rick Dau
I had promised a few people in the hobby some time back that I would get around
to this, and now I finally am. What follows is a list of AM stations that, to
the best of my knowledge, are still desginated as "limited time" (my own two
cents, first: "limited time" is perhaps the ultimate misnomer, as NONE of these
stations are having their day-power hours limited to anything less than a
sunrise-to-sunset schedule. If anything, the designation should be what it
really is -- "extended time" for each station). In the case of many of these,
the information listed is what they were using back in the 1990s, so if
anything has changed in the years since with any station, PLEASE feel free to
make a correction and/or update.

710 - WEKC Williamsburg, KY and WTPR Paris, TN - both stations sign on at
monthly sunrise time of WOR in
 New York City
750 - KMMJ Grand Island, NE - goes to day power at monthly sunrise time of WSB
in Atlanta
770 - WEW St. Louis, MO - signs on at monthly sunrise time of WABC in New York
City
780 - WJAG Norfolk, NE - signs on at monthly sunrise time of WBBM in Chicago
810 - WSYW Indianapolis, IN - signs on at monthly sunrise time of WGY in
Schenectady
840 - KTIC West Point, NE - I'm listing this one simply because they sign on
with full day power every
morning at 6:00 local time, even if it's before the monthly sunrise
time of WHAS in Louisville
850 - KFUO Clayton, MO - signs off at monthly sunset time of KOA in Denver
870 - WHCU Ithaca, NY - goes to night power at monthly sunset time of WWL in
New Orleans
1020 - WPEO Peoria, IL - signs on at monthly sunrise time of KDKA in Pittsburgh
1030 - KCTA Corpus Christi, TX - goes to day power (no sign-on announcement!)
at monthly sunrise time of
 WBZ in Boston
1060 - WHFB Benton Harbor, MI - goes to 2500 watt critical hours power at
monthly sunrise time of KYW in
 Philadelphia
1110 - KFAB Omaha, NE - is, of course, 50 KW all 24 hrs, but goes to its
non-directional day pattern at
monthly sunrise time of WBT in Charlotte
1140 - WVEL Pekin, IL - goes to 3200 watt critical hours power (no sign-on
announcement) at monthly
sunrise time of WRVA in Richmond
1160 - WYLL Chicago, IL - goes to its night pattern at monthly sunset time of
KSL in Salt Lake City
1530 - WCKY Cincinnati, OH - goes to its directional night pattern at monthly
sunset time of KFBK in
     Sacramento

I'm testing a PHP/MySQL Chat system over at https://dxer.ca/blab/

The downside of Facebook is that you have to be a member of Facebook
and that means giving up almost every last gribble of personal information
you have --
and it isn't truly live nor is it a chat channel...

The system I have installed can any number of channels on it all dedicated
to any aspect of the
hobby and any geographical location.

If it catches on, great - if it doesn't, no big - it only took 15 minutes
to set it up.

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread Rick Dau
Nick, I can answer that. During MW DX seasons about 5 or 6 years ago, I was a
regular -- almost nightly -- visitor to the #mwdx room on Starchat.net. About
2 years ago, I attempted to get back onto it, and was unsuccessful, as was
Shawn Axelrod in Winnipeg (I think it was due to Starchat being powered by
Java, which was having some sort of security issue at the time). Just for
grins and giggles, I tried again this evening, and could not even get past
Starchat.net's homepage. When I typed "mwdx" in the search page, it wasn't
recognized as a room. So Starchat.net isn't an option anymore, at least not
for me.

A couple years ago, I found librairc.net/chat, and was able to get #mwdx going
as a room there. I did let a few folks know about it, and some, like Shawn and
longtime IRCA member Tom Laskowski in South Bend, Indiana, were able to find
their way onto it. Others could not, so I gave up pursuing it.

Tonight, however, I have found something that I think will pass muster. One
simply goes to librairc.net's sister page, http://www.chanops.org. Once there,
you'll see a homepage with a pair of fields -- one for a nickname and one for a
channel to go to -- under "Think of a nickname..." Type in a nickname that you
want to use, and you do NOT have to click the box underneath that says "I have
a password". Then go down to the Channel field, type in #mwdx, and click on
the Start button. THAT should get you in.
And the best part isno registration required!

Crossing his fingers and hoping this will work,

First rule is to see what's already available.

bcblog had its last submission less than two hours ago.

Does anyone know what happened to #mwdx?

Even ye olde DXFishbarrel can
help http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm
Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

best wishes,

Re: [IRCA] East Coast online SDR's (most get an "F")

2019-02-27 Thread Rick Dau
I checked out a few Southern KiwiSDRs last night, namely, from Texas, Alabama,
Tennessee, and Kentucky. For me, the litmus test is how well they sound on
longwave, i.e., if the amount of buzz is impeding non-directional beacons from
being heard or not. I figure that if they are relatively clean on longwave,
then mediumwave, of course, will be worth trying.

IMHO, only the SDRs from Lubbock, Texas and Fort Rucker, Alabama, passed muster
in that regard. By the way, I noticed, while looking at the map on sdr.hu,
that Bob Hawkins has turned off the SDR in Edinburgh, Indiana. Hope this isn't
permanent, as I always found it to be one of the better-sounding SDRs out there.

Periodically I check out the KiwiSDR directory page since new receivers come on
from time to time (and old ones are occasionally dropped).

For the uninitiated, the links homepage is:

https://sdr.hu/

Two TA stations are very consistent here mid-evenings and are therefore good
candidates for evaluating the receivers. These are RNE Spain on 855 and
Absolute Radio UK on 1215. Since those are midway between domestic channels,
the AM Narrow setting on a KiwiSDR should be adequate to separate those
stations from domestic interference. Those receivers are far from a Perseus,
Elad, or Excalibur (or, for that matter, Collins R-390A) in the selectivity
game but those two big stations even can be heard on ultralight portables, at
least near the ocean.

Last weekend I simultaneously had audio from my own receiver running as I tried
about 15 online receivers in the Eastern time zone of the US and Canada.

The 855 and 1215 signals were both doing great here around midnight EST / 0500
UTC.

Only TWO (!) of the available online receivers had audio from these stations.

Bill Whitacre's Lubec, Maine receiver was doing the best job and had results
about the same as I was getting on my Elad here.

http://qhkiwisdr.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073/

The mid-coast Maine receiver run by WA2ZKD/1 came in second with somewhat
weaker TA's than on either Bill's receiver or mine. Domestic splash was worse,
indicating a less directive antenna.

http://rx2.wa2zkd.net:8073

Interestingly there was very little internet delay (live versus online) audio.
The old (2005 era?) DXTuners used to run about 8 sec. of latency.

So what about the dozen plus other receivers including ON, QC, New England, NY,
NJ, MD, and all the way down to FL? ZIP .. ZILCH .. NADA! Just huge adjacent
channel slop onto 855 and 1215 or, if not that, the sounds of silence .. or
electrical buzz.

The Dominican Republic SDR also had zippo on 855 and 1215.
http://dr.twrmon.net:8073

So if you're looking for interesting MW DX on an eastern US or Canada SDR,
don't waste your time, just go to one of the two receivers above.

I believe that the deficiency in most cases is the antenna. If Kaz in IL and
Tim Tromp in MI, not to mention DXers all the way out to BC/WA/OR, frequently
hear 855 Spain and 1215 UK, then there is no excuse for a receiver in NH, MA,
NJ, MD, VA, etc. not to have those stations "inbooming".

The only other US East Coast KiwiSDR's I see having much use are two in
Florida, mostly to keep an ear on Cubans and other close-up Latins:

I tried for it on the KiwiSDR out of Muscatine, Iowa, but didn't hear a thing,
even though I wasn't getting any splatter on 1430 from semi-local WOC-1420. In
fact, I heard nothing but noise on 1430, no sign of even St. Louis or

interference issues going on at the time. Bummer.

doing anything to educate young people about the technical side of radio and
about the duties of maintaining multi-tower sites. "Virtually nothing", he
replied. "I'm 48, and I'm one of the youngest people I know of still doing
this. There's nobody coming up behind us to take over."

That portends an eerie future for radio, and for those of us who are hobbyists
in it. Before that visit, I had been a stauch defender of AM's future, but
now, I'm more like, "Well, I'm just going to milk this cow for however long
there's milk left in her."

And since we're on the subject of buying/selling/trading/giving away, there are
still a few more items that I'm on the hunt for:

8th Edition, NRC AM Log (dated 1986, NO markings in it, please!)

13th Edition, FM Atlas (dated 1990)

4th Edition, IRCA Almanac (I first mentioned this at the convention in Billings
4 years ago, but haven't had anyone come forward yet with one. This came out
sometime before I initially joined IRCA in December 1988, and HQ sent me a copy
as a welcoming present. I would dearly love to get one in my hands again!)

Re: [IRCA] KIAQ on AM?

And, that, Mark is exactly what you heard. You had WMT, which was carrying
University of Iowa football at the time. Announcer Gary Dolphin was giving a
"shout-out" to some of the stations on Learfield's Hawkeye Network, one of
which was KIAQ (others that he mentioned were WDBQ 107.5 in Dubuque, IA/Galena,
IL and KCSI 95.3/KOAK 1080 in southwest Iowa). I happened to be listening in
on the broadcast on local affiliate KOTK-1420 in Omaha at that moment.

[IRCA] November 1-14 AM loggings - Davenport, IA logbook

2018-11-14 Thread Rick Dau
early. (RD-IA)

1460 WBNS OH Columbus - 11/7 2012 - Briefly in w/clear "...on the Ohio State
IMG Sports Network" heard going into commercial break (OSU was leading
Cincinnati 64-56 at that point). 2 affiliates shown on 1460 on this year's
Buckeyes network list, but mwlist.org says WBNS is more likely the one I heard
rather than WABQ. (RD-IA)

1490t WMRN OH Marion - 11/1 2122 - Briefly atop w/Cleveland Cavaliers BKB
about 7 seconds ahead of WTAM-1100. Both WMRN and WMOA are listed on this
year's Cavs network as the 1490 affiliates. Because Marion's about 110 miles
closer to Davenport than Marietta is, I'm going with WMRN as the more likely
station, but regardless of who it was, it's new and OH #20 in the Davenport
logbook. (RD-IA)

1510 KCTE MO Independence - 11/13 1758 - Good u/WLAC w/outro before ad break:
"You're listening to Almost Entirely Sports with Joshua Brisco on ESPN Kansas
City". (RD-IA)

1590 KYNG AR Springdale - 11/12 1832 - Briefly in w/phone # heard w/327
prefix (which I found out is in nearby Bella Vista), then IDs in liner as "The
Buzz Radio Network" and "103.7 The Buzz". (RD-IA)

1590 WLBN KY Lebanon - 11/12 1815 - Fair w/CLs heard 3 times over the space
of about 2 minutes, then into Howard Jones' "No One Is To Blame". Running day
power late. KY #9. (RD-IA)

1600 WUCT TN Algood - 11/3 2241 - Fair to good on presumed day power w/Univ.
of Alabama FB, play-by-play by Eli Gold (who's also done radio broadcasts of
NASCAR races for many years). WUCT is the only 1600 I can find carrying
Alabama FB this season. (RD-IA)

1600 WRPN WI Ripon - 11/7 0745 - In well at pattern switch time w/ad for
Wautoma Job Center at 205 East Main Street in Wautoma. Announcer read
Wisconsin lottery numbers at 0750. (RD-IA)

As of November 3, 2018 WEUP's slogan was "Talk and Gospel 94.5".
Perhaps, their slogan changed?

Sure this isn't 1550 kHz WVAB Virginia Beach, VA. Their slogan is "The
Praise".

Or, 1650 kHz WHKT Portsmouth, VA as they also use "Praise" in their slogan.

Or, 1190 kHz WLIB, NYC, NY as their slogan contains "Praise".

Re: [IRCA] October 18-31 AM loggings - Davenport, IA logbook

2018-11-01 Thread Rick Dau
Neil --

Here's the email I received on October 11 from Allen Kiddoo, KT0TT, operator
of the Muscatine SDR:

"I started out with an untuned 26' dipole, which was fair on 20 and 40
meters but poor on 80 meters or lower. About 2 weeks ago, I changed to a home
made active loop. It is a hula hoop spiral wrapped with 1/2" wide copper tape.
Total length of tape would be about 20'. Loop is connected to a 30db amp with
balance-wound balun. Loop is about 5' above ground in side yard. 55' of RG6u
runs back to the Kiwi. Cost to build the loop was less than $20."

I asked Allen if he had plans to upgrade to an antenna that would better
receive AM and longwave, since I've noticed that there's a lot of noise on the
lower end of the AM band (from about 800 Khz) on down and quite a bit on LW.
He said he's constantly experimenting and hopes to come up with something
that'll eliminate much, if not all, of the buzz. I'm hopeful, since I've spent
a LOT of time on it in the past month.

   Incidentally, its URL is http://www.kt0tt.dynu.net:8073

1360 WMOB AL Mobile - 10/28 1930 - Cranking out the full 9 KW after sundown
with Bible-teaching pgm. Confirmed by webstream. This station has literally
been cheating for over 27 years now, at least, and has almost become as
reliable an Alabama logging as WVNN-770 or WAPI-1070. (RD-IA)

1380 KOTA SD Rapid City - 10/28 1959 - In briefly with just "...KOTA, Rapid

"The Power" and Chicago's "Hard To Say I'm Sorry": "Thanks for taking us
along...1400 AM and 104 FM...". Because I could never get a matching webstream
to come up, I was hesitant to count this at first, but the format fits sister
station "The Bay 104 FM" WSAG, which was also consistently the first thing that
surfaced when doing repeated Google searches of "1400 AM 104 FM". That's close
enough for me. 1st Michigan graveyarder here. (RD-IA)

1430 CHKT ON Toronto - 10/23 2202 - Fair with mention of "Brampton" in
Chinese talk by male. ON #20. (RD-IA)

AZ #2. (RD-IA)

1510 WPGR PA Monroeville - 10/23 2339 - Fair with singing by women's chorale,

with "AM 1550...WIGN, Bristol..." ID. TN #15. (RD-IA)

1570 WSCO WI Appleton - 10/6 2030 - Fair with only "...99-1, The Score" heard
at the end of promo. Took a lot of sleuthing online, including
www.topazdesigns.com/ambc<http://www.topazdesigns.com/ambc>, but finally
narrowed it down to this. (RD-IA)

1630 KKGM TX Fort Worth - 10/12 2059 - Weak under KCJJ with clear "AM 1630
KKGM" ID. KCJJ was airing a HS FB game between Iowa City West High and
Muscatine at the time. (RD-IA)

1630 KRND WY Fox Farm - 10/8 2145 - Weak but readable under KCJJ with clear
"La Jota Mexicana!" slogan heard in liner between SS songs. KCJJ was breaking
into normal AdCon/Top 40 music programming at the time with severe storm
warnings in eastern Iowa, which helped. WY #1 in the Davenport logbook.
(RD-IA)

   UnID

680 UNID- 10/14 2232 - Someone here with the Kansas City Chiefs vs.
New England Patriots NFL game, but it was the feed from Westwood One (with
Omaha native Kevin Kugler on the play-by-play), and NOT the feed from the
Chiefs network, so that rules out KFEQ. A check of KNBR's webstream revealed
that they were carrying the ALCS baseball game between Boston's Red Sox and
Houston's Astros, so that scratches KNBR as a possibility, too. Several ESPN
stations are listed on 680, but I can't imagine any of them carrying a game
from Westwood One, which has been managed in the past by CBS Radio. (RD-IA)

Funding for the US Department of Commerce, which includes NIST and WWV / WWVH /
WWVB, was authorized through December 7th, 2018 as part of the Continuing
Resolution component of the Defense / Education / HHS / Labor FY2019 funding
bill that was approved by the House on September 26 and signed by President
Trump yesterday, September 28th.

This averted an end-of-Fiscal-year shutdown that had been mildly threatened in
the past few months.

This approach kicks the can down the road until December 7th -- it funds all
agencies at the same levels they received in FY 2018 for all continuing
activities -- which would include the time stations because there was no
Congressional or Agency action to shut them down in FY18.

This date could mean that no actions will be taken until after mid-term
elections, though that's not known for a fact.

To all on this board: The Ottawa/Gatineau area was hit by tornadoes Friday
evening, and DXer Mike Cherry is reporting that the area could be without hydro
power for at least a couple of weeks. Barry's site appears to be affected.
For now, I'm turning to the backups that I usually rely on when
www.topazdesigns.com/ambc<http://www.topazdesigns.com/ambc> goes down:

1) www.mwlist.org<http://www.mwlist.org> (requires registering with an e-mail
addess, but is extremely helpful in most search areas, save for the

monthly sunrise and sunset times for each station that Barry's site shows)

2) www.radio-locator.com<http://www.radio-locator.com> (which I'm sure about
99% of the people here already know about. Free access, but it limits the

amount of times per day that you can use it to look up info. The info on
Canadian stations is also VERY out-of-date, as

 Mike points out)

Re: [IRCA] 690 KFXN

2017-11-05 Thread Rick Dau
I think your real question is are they using their licensed 4 watt night power
at night, and the answer should be pretty obvious. As far back as May 2014, I
was hearing KFXN down here at all hours of night, and they probably haven't
changed one iota since. 500 watts vs. 4 -- can you blame them? 4 watts is
laughable. To sufficiently cover the Twin Cities at night, they'd surely need
10 times that, especially with a tower site on the NW side of Minneapolis near
Maple Grove and Plymouth.

FWIW, I can get KFXN's directional day signal easily in Spirit Lake, Iowa, 140
miles to the southwest. And as others have pointed out, there's absolutely no
need for KFXN to be "pulling in" its daytime signal to the southwest, since the
station it once upon a time had to protect -- KUSD in Vermillion, South Dakota
-- went silent for good in 1994 as a result of vandalism at its transmitter
site.

Re: [IRCA] Old school logging

2017-10-09 Thread Rick Dau

The timing of this thread is interesting, in light of what happened to me over
the weekend. File this one under the "miracle of miracles" category...

So I'm out at my parents' farmhouse yesterday for a family cookout. At one
point during the afternoon, I'm in a storage room upstairs looking through a
box of some stuff that I owned many, many years ago before moving out in early
1991. I stumble across one of those old glossy Mead folders. Y'know, like the
kind that high school and college students had back in the day as organizers.
I open it up and what do I find in it? 5 sheets of notebook paper on which are
written my FM logsheet from Spirit Lake, Iowa dated 1995, plus both my AM and
FM logsheets dated 1996 from Lafayette, Indiana. Talk about finding a treasure
trove! Obviously, not ALL of my logbooks were thrown away when I left the
hobby for 5 years starting in May 2005. I wondered, though, how in the world
these made it out to the farm, and then I remembered -- I brought them with me
when I came home from Lafayette at Christmastime in 1996, a starter solenoid in
my Chevy Cavalier went out on me while I was the
re, and I was so stressed out about the car that I left the folder behind in
my room when I went back to Indiana. So I figured I'd just grab it the next
time I was back home, and then I forgot it again, and never did remember that
it was there until yesterday. The sheets are somewhat faded, as you might
imagine they would be after this many years, so I'm in the process of
transcribing my loggings onto new sheets of paper, and then the originals will
get tossed. Even though the loggings don't contain info about WHAT I heard,
they still have dates and times on them, which says that I at least heard
SOMETHING confirming that it was that station I heard at the time I heard it.
Finding the FM logsheets for Spirit Lake was especially ironic, timing-wise, as
I'm going to be up there with Ernie Wesolowski this coming weekend. All of the
logsheets were in order by date, but I eventually will get them sorted by
frequency onto new sheets were they can then be printed out from my e
 -mail.

Annual DXpedition? Gosh, Tim, I thought you went there several times a year.
I know what a great DXing environment that's been for you.

A week from tomorrow, Ernie Wesolowski and I are headed up to Spirit Lake (my
old stomping grounds, from May 1995 - July 1996) in northwest Iowa's Okoboji
region for a 3-day DXing vacation. Among other things, I hope to do a more
thorough daytime bandscan (one that I did from nearby Arnolds Park in April
1989 on the radio in my 1977 Ford LTD turned up 82 stations, and I KNOW more
than that are audible from the Iowa Great Lakes on any given day). Also hope
to do lots of FM DXing -- the Okoboji area is situated on nearly the highest
point in Iowa, elevation-wise, and the landscape is almost entirely
pancake-flat for miles around, so FM signals travel a great distance. As I
recall, many Sioux Falls FMs, 80-some miles distant, are like locals.

I'm reviewing my recordings from my annual Border Inn DXpedition (US 6/50 at
the Nevada-Utah border). On my last morning there (10/2) the conditions to
Mexico finally improved.

At 1101:40 UT on 930 kHz, mixing with KIUP, KAFF, and an unidentified Spanish
station (most likely KAPR), I heard a very unusual version of the Mexican
national anthem, sung by little children accompanied by a school band. I
eventually realized they were singing in a native language.

This turns out to be the indigenous station XETLA-930 in Santa Maria Asuncion
Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, a 5kW daytimer. I got up at 4am this morning to listen to
XETLA's webstream, and sure enough, there was the anthem I heard.

This might be the first time I have heard Oaxaca from anywhere.

I think others may be able to hear this station, so I'm attaching a long audio
clip from their webstream. Note this morning they turned the transmitter on
around 1058 (based on OC sound suddenly appearing on webstream) but didn't get
around to signing on until just after 1104 UT. This is not unusual for Mexican
stations.

This presumably would have been even easier if KIUP-CO hadn't recently returned
to the air. BTW I'm fairly confident that XETLA is the only Mexican station
left on 930 that hasn't migrated to FM.

Mark, it was probably one of the 80s conventions where you met him. I believe
he told me on several occasions that the Lincoln, NE convention (1977) was the
first one he attended, and I think he told me that he first joined the NRC
about 2 years prior to that. Unless someone else recalls differently, he was
at every NRC convention after 1977, and I first met him at the one that he
co-hosted with Todd Brandenburg and Skip & Buddy Dabelstein in Topeka in 1989
(first convention I attended). Paul, as is well-known, had a large collection
of coffee cups/mugs with radio station logos on them that he acquired through
convention auctions. I hope those are headed to a good home now, because I
sure would hate to see those get thrown away.

Paul was a great DXer and certainly a hard worker in all the behind-the-scenes
activity that kept DX bulletins going out on time with high quality material in
loggings, technical, broadcast information, and member "musings" that added the
valuable personal touches. Some in the hobby also knew of his teaching
profession and his love of writing young-adult literature. He tried to
maintain good grammatical standards in a world where English usage seems to get
sloppier each year.

I joined NRC in 1972, about 12 years after I had started DXing. I joined IRCA
shortly after that. Paul's name was already well known in the hobby at that
point if I recall correctly.

In about 2010, when I started connecting with DXers on Facebook, the ability of
communications to spread out to a whole range of other topics came about.
Prior to that, my mail and email with hobbyists was mostly about the hobby.
This was especially true when dealing with list forums and club publications
where straying off radio and onto chat about trains, cars, architecture,
gardening, woodworking, etc. would meet disapproval.

As the Facebook age came about, Paul was one with whom I could correspond on
many subjects outside of, or maybe just peripherally-related to, DX. We
chatted photography, travel, and especially music. He and I discussed '60s
entertainers that were pretty well known "back in the day" but are nearly
forgotten now. Helen Shapiro in pop music and Richard & Mimi Farina in folk
come to mind. We both agreed that spring / summer '67 was a peak era, perhaps
THE peak era, of rock, folk, and soul music with pop, country, and jazz looking
very good too. Paul knew of, and appreciated, the British and Celtic folk-rock
groups that made a splash in the early to mid '70s, notably Fairport Convention
and Steeleye Span: groups that were all but ruling my turntable (and radio,
thanks to Cambridge's WCAS) at a time when most people were talking about disco.

I did meet Paul at one of the NRC conventions. Not sure if it was early '70s
Cambridge, MA, one of the '80s ones (NJ, CT), or Nashua, NH in '94. He seemed
easy going and not one to goad people into annoying rancorous arguments about
politics or religion. When I hooked up with him on Facebook, this mellow +
intelligent aspect of his personality continued to shine.

He will be missed. Maybe he's having a cup of java (or glass of beer?) in
front of a celestial R-390A in the company of so many other great DXers who
went before.

R.I.P. Paul.

Eclipse DXing on AM and longwave was a total bust here. Storms came through at

Re: [IRCA] Motel QRM

2017-08-16 Thread Rick Dau
I hear ya about the hotel QRM, Steve. On recent roadtrips, I've found that the
effective way to DX the AM band in the room is if the radio is sitting on the
windowsill. Less buzz there than elsewhere in a room. Finding a hotel that's
relatively noise-free these days is a rarity, but the host hotel for the 2014
IRCA convention in Billings (a Lexington Inn & Suites) was a real find. NO
buzz whatsoever on not just the AM band, but also on longwave, as well, where I
was able to DX beacons to my heart's content. Wish all hotels would install
the same type of noise-cancelling devices that one did, if that's what the
magic formula was.

Subject: [IRCA] Motel QRM

Gang,

It seems that about 3/4 of the time I travel I end up in a hotel or a
motel that has QRM on every AMBCB frequency strong enough to blank out
all but the strong locals (if there is one). Some of the nicer motels
seem to be the worst. On a recent trip to my wife's family reunion in
eastern NY we stayed in a Best Western in Ohio. Tuning the entire BCB
I with my Sony ICF-SW35 I could hear 1 station clearly, and one faintly.

I am open to suggestion.

After 2 back surgeries and now scoliosis my back wakes me up a LOT in
the middle of the night. I suspect my spinal column was a factory
reject acquired off ebay or craigslist. I sleep with the radio and a
single earbud, (stereo cut with one bud cut off). I like the SW-35 for
several reasons, among them are:

It has 50 memories

It will shut itself off after a reset-able time

It has a button I can push to temporarily light up the dial so I can see
the time

And while not the best performer I have ever owned, it has worked well
for a long time. It is aging and if anyone has suggestion for a better
replacement please pass them on.

Thanks,

Steve NG0G

[IRCA] Lincoln, Nebraska FM rock station to provide its own eclipse soundtrack

2017-08-16 Thread Rick Dau
92.9 KTGL "The Eagle" of Beatrice/Lincoln is planning something rather special
for Monday's celestial event. Beginning at 12:21 p.m. Central Time, the
station will play "Dark Side Of The Moon" in its entirety, concluding with the
album's famous final lyric "...when everything under the sun is in tune, but
the sun is eclipsed by the moon" at 1:04 at precisely the moment that totality
begins in the skies over Lincoln.

Classic Country KXRB Sioux Falls, SD has moved.

Now on 1140 AM, it'll have 5000 watts at night compared to 100 Watts on
1000.

Townsquare Media has also dumped the "Easy 100.1" AC Format of Class A
2.15KW/558 ft KDEZ and that will simulcast the AM, presumably as KXRB-FM

Not sure what will be on 1000khz. This was posted on the sttaions Facbeook

2017-08-02 Thread Rick Dau
Tom, I mentioned on the NRC listserver back on the evening of July 21st that 11
messages sent to me that afternoon all arrived in my Junk Mail folder. Wayne
suggested that I needed to "whitelist" to make sure that no more messages were
sent to that folder, otherwise if a...@nrcdxas.org was called out as spam, "the
big boys will block our email", in his words. So that is what I did by going
into my Hotmail settings, locating "Safe Senders", and including
a...@nrcdxas.org on that list. Since then, not one email from the NRC
listserver has shown up in my inbox, despite the fact that, to the best of my
knowledge, I am still on the list. This isn't the first time that the NRC
listserver has had issues with trying to circumvent spam problems.

Re: [IRCA] Upcoming solar eclipse

2017-05-24 Thread Rick Dau
Gary, those folks living in Lincoln City and McMinnville have to consider
themselves fortunate. They were in the path of totality for the last total
solar eclipse visible from the U.S., too, on Feb. 26, 1979. And the people in
Albany and Corvallis, who missed out on the whole show in '79, will get it this
time around. IIRC, Portland was in the path of totality in '79, but cloudy
skies ruined the spectacle there.

Not many people in the U.S. can say they've been lucky enough to be living in
the path of TWO of them in their lifetimes. Carbondale, Illinois, however,
will be in the part of totality for both this upcoming one in August and the
next one on April 8, 2024.

73,

Rick Dau

South Omaha, Nebraska (will be in eastern Iowa on Aug. 21, so will only get
about 95% totality)

-

The August 21 eclipse will hit the Oregon coast first, and we were lucky enough
to book a room in the Lincoln City (OR) Liberty Inn at the regular room rate of
$169/night before the motel jacked up the rates to $1000 per night that weekend
(Lincoln City is in the path of totality). The motel tried to raise the rates
on everybody up to $1000 for that period, but KGW-8 TV in Portland and the
Oregon State Attorney General's office got involved, and the motel was
eventually forced to honor the rates that they agreed to when the rooms were
booked.

For those of you with SDR's, and located along its path (
http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/path_through_the_US.htm) the solar eclipse over
North American which is to occur on August 21 will present a most interesting
possibility.

I remember DX'ing during a solar eclipse back in the 1970's, and I experienced
stations on the path 'ahead' of me coming in as if it were SS/SR propagation.

Now, with SDR's, it will be possible to record the entire band for the duration
of the eclipse, or at least for that portion where effects will be noticeable
in any particular area.

Alas, many of us in the Northeast, Southwest and North Central US won't be
close enough to the path to experience the full effects.

Re: [IRCA] 800 UNID

Jim, I'd put the brakes on reporting this one as CJAD just yet. Dr. Asa's
program, "On-Call" IS carried on CKLW from 10:30 to Midnight, right at the time
you would've heard it, and Coast-To-Coast AM follows. This according to their
website, and I DID get CKLW carrying Dr. Asa back on March 24th at 2327 Central
Time. I know there was a fire at the transmitter, but I'm wondering if this
isn't indeed CKLW, but broadcasting with a vastly reduced wattage?

BTW, I noted CKLW's program schedule for both "On Call" and "Coast-To-Coast AM"
and thinking that they have the wrong times listed, as "Coast-To-Coast AM"
doesn't begin live until 1 a.m. Eastern.

Hopefully someone in the Windsor-Detroit area can show up on here to give us
the scoop on if CKLW is still on the air with reduced power, or not.

Jim, you're probably thinking of WGLB in Port Washington, and the FCC website
for WGLB says they were granted a CP two years ago to go to 2500 days, 250
nights, 700 during CH. When I was in Davenport, Iowa (roughly 163 air miles
from WGLB's transmitter site) last September, WGLB was blowing the doors off
everything else on 1560 just before Midnight. My surmise is that not only is
their CP on, but I'd bet my next dozen farm-fresh eggs that they're running
that 2500 watt day power all night long.

There was a tip on Facebook at 2309, and of course I didn't note who posted
it, but WFME 1560 is off the air. In it's place a strong signal with a
gospel music program mentioning Wisconsin and Wisconsin phone numbers.
Must be using day power, I figured. But the NRC Log says WGYB is U4
185/250. So one of those unusual ones that is authorized to raise power at
night. Though 250 watts seems to be packing quite a punch tonight. A new
one here. And thanks for the FB tip.

Re: [IRCA] 910 new logging

2017-03-29 Thread Rick Dau
Your memory is good, Mike. Back in the early 1990s, WGTO was the callsign of
the 540 licensed to Cypress Gardens, Florida. That station and WSTH in
Columbus, Georgia, also on 540, would make frequent visits to the Midwest from
about 1992 to 1994 in the wintertime when auroral conditions were prevalant.

Wikipedia and the station's website both have links to WGTO's web stream. It
and Radio-locator.com are often good places to find it. If not they often have
a link to the station's website, which may have a "Listen Live" or similar.

Very nicely done, Tim! My lifetime graveyard distance record belongs to a
reception of KOTS-1230 Deming, New Mexico that I got from Millard (a section of
west Omaha), Nebraska. 893 miles. That was accomplished, by the way, in late
August 2002, nowhere close to the typical "dead of winter" peak for graveyard

Re: [IRCA] dx dead spots

2017-03-15 Thread Rick Dau
It has to be something else, Richard, because iron in the soil is detrimental
to an AM station's ability to be heard at a great distance. The soil in the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan on over to the Arrowhead region of northwest
Minnesota is absolutely loaded with iron, and the AMs in that area just don't
get out well at all. It's especially noticeable in the daytime.

I forgot to mention the reddish colour of the soil is caused by a high iron

Exactly, Billy. 30 is top of the line. See that 30 area in northwest Iowa
along the Minnesota border? That's the "Okoboji" area of Iowa, a popular
vacation destination from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I used to live in that
area. The DX on both AM and FM up there was amazing, easily the best QTH for
DXing in which I've ever resided. Of course, it didn't hurt that among my 3
closest AM stations, KILR-1070 (250 watts) and KKOJ-1190 (5000 watts) were both
daytimers, and KICD-1240 (1000 watts, of course) was 20 miles to the south. I
recently hit 1000 AM stations logged here in South Omaha, taking nearly 6 1/2
years to do so. Had I stayed up in Okoboji instead of moving away in July
1996, it probably would've taken me about 1/4 as long -- if that -- to reach
1000.

I think it might be a combination of any or all of the factors that you
mentioned. You seem to be using good quality equipment for sure. There are
times when there have been solar storms and the band is just a loud buzz so
even locals sound horrible. I recall seeing a map once that showed the best and
worst places as far as ground conductivity in North America goes. I would bet
that can be found using Google.

Hi all….. a topic that has always confounded me is the subject of
“dx deadspots”. Literally geographic areas where nothing of a dx nature seems
to penetrate. I’ve alluded to this in previous threads and blamed it on

Antennas, sunspots, noise…… you know the usual suspects. I’ve even postulated
that poor soil conductivity is a contributor. While much has been written on
these topics (other than soils to my knowledge) I wonder

If any of you have these same frustrations. Naturally I leave “ass time in the
chair” as the last factor. We all know what that means when it comes
to good dx. I’ll even go as far to express that having top notch gear

Is useless if you don’t use it! nevertheless, the perception does exist
that “location, location, blah, blah” may be a significant although unexplored
factor plagueing all of us.

Anyone else experience these blasé feelings?

When we were DX'ing from the Valhalla site we used small propane heaters. they
used one pound Propane cylinders and that ran a small heater that attached
straight to the cyylinder. Worked great for many years. Came witha satnd to
keep things safe. Pics below of a similar model to what we used. Way safer that
kerosene as these cylinders don't spill. Screw the heater on tight and light

[IRCA] Using a portable heater while DXing

2017-02-19 Thread Rick Dau

I'd like to know how many of you use one on the REALLY cold winter nights while
DXing, and if you mostly go with an electric heater or a kerosene heater. I'm
going to be a guest at my parents' farm east of Council Bluffs, Iowa all this
week and have come up with the idea of bringing along a Stanley 1500-watt
utility heater to keep my surroundings warm should I decide to stay up into the
wee hours. I've run into a bit of a quandary, though...it requires plugging
into an outlet. My obvious choice would be to go with a tractor shed on our
place, but it's one that was constructed in the mid-1980s. As is the case with
most modern tractor sheds, it is of a steel construction and has fluorescent
lighting overhead, so there will be a bit of a buzz issue, although not
intolerable. To get away from the buzz completely, my other way to go would be
to DX from a wooden shed on our place that was built during the 1920s in which
we raised chickens when I was a kid. Most sheds and o
utbuildings on farms that were built back then are going to be all-wood, and
would naturally be more appealing for DXing, but many that are THAT old don't
have outlets, and that's the situation with this one. In that case, I would
think a kerosene heater would be a better choice. Anyway, I welcome all
feedback on this. I'm just happy to get out of the city for a week and get
back to a place where I won't have to deal with images, spurs, and mixing
products on the AM band!

I've already expressed an interest in the FM Atlas that Pete has from 1988
(11th edition), but I will repost here a wish list of DX-related items that I'm
on the hunt for:

BROADCASTING YEARBOOK

1980

NRC DOMESTIC LOGS

8th Edition through 15th Edition, which equates to 1986/87 through 1995/96
(would appreciate ones that do not have any writing in them!)

FM ATLAS
13th and 14th Editions, 1990 and 1992

IRCA ALMANAC

4th Edition (unsure of the year, but I believe the 5th Edition came out in
either late 1991 or early 1992 -- I had the one before that)

NRC DX AUDIO SERVICE CASSETTE TAPES

All tapes from January 1992 through December 1994, with the EXCEPTION of
January and February 1994, which I already have. So that would be a total of
34 cassette tapes. If you can't break up any volumes, that's fine, I can go
with that.

NRC PATTERN BOOK

1980

In addition to these, I also collect radio station bumperstickers, mostly AM,
but I will do FM if I have an interest in the station or the sticker itself.
If you can help me with any of these items, please, please, PLEASE contact me
offlist so we can set something up in the way of a purchase. And I will cover
any shipping charges, too.

Re: [IRCA] AM BCB DX…..Station # 2,000 Logged

2017-02-09 Thread Rick Dau
Rob, congrats on getting 2000 on MW! As you no doubt noticed in the latest
loggings I posted to this listserver a few days ago, I'm pretty darn close to
hitting a milestone myself from here in South Omaha. KUTR-820 Taylorsville,
Utah was logging #999 for me last Friday morning, and I'm hoping #1000 will be
someone that I thought I might've had in the past but couldn't confirm, like
KSJB-600 in North Dakota, or one of two Mexicans on 630 that begin with the
letters "XEJ". But I will take it however it comes. For perspective, I logged
1430 overall (1375 from the U.S. and Canada) from Iowa City, Iowa beginning in
October 1985 before finally retiring that logbook for good with my last
loggings in September 2013. Topping that might be tough from here, but I'll
certainly give it a try.

Re: [IRCA] Hot 95

2017-02-08 Thread Rick Dau
Kraig, I'm starting to think that your unID must've said a word other than
"Hot". In checking the WTFDA database, I see only 4 stations with a "Hot 95"
slogan, none of them are on 95.3, and to complicate matters, none of them are
anywhere close to an 1130, ruling out the possibility of simulcasting sister
stations. The 1130s to the immediate south and west of you are in West
Virginia and North Carolina, but those are all daytimers. Solving this one
looks like a lost cause. Any way you can record your loggings while DXing and
then post mp3s here?

All times ELT, and all are relogs with the exception of KUTR.

770 KAAM TX Garland - 2/3 1911 - Atop with "...on KAAM" heard, then into
Bobby Vee's 1961 version of "More Than I Can Say" (having grown up in the late
70s and early 80s, I'm more familiar with Leo Sayer's Top Ten remake from 1980)
and The Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun". (RD-NE)
820 KUTR UT Taylorsville - 2/3 0933 - Briefly over WBAP with mentions of

number in the 801 area code. Overall logging #999. (RD-NE)
880 KHAC NM Tse Bonito - 2/2 2102 - Very good with starting lineups of
men's basketball game between Idaho State Univ. and Northern Arizona Univ.
KHAC is on the NAU network, having joined for the 2015-16 season. (RD-NE)
990 KRKS CO Denver - 2/2 1843 - Good and alone on the channel (at least for
a little bit) with ad for the Colorado Broadcasters Virtual Job Fair, then into

coverage of Artesia High School boys and girls basketball on KSVP. Very

[IRCA] What the future MW and LW bands MIGHT sound like (was: RIP DX Tests)

2017-01-08 Thread Rick Dau
Les, I often catch myself wondering about what the MW band would sound like
here IF -- and this is just a hypothetical situation , mind you -- all of the
AM stations in Canada and the U.S. were to permanently go silent. Will Mexican
stations stay on? If THOSE go off, will AM stations in Central and South
America stay on? Will AM stations across the Atlantic and Pacific stay on?
The DX opportunities for us, should those scenarios occur, could be fascinating
(it's been over 25 years since I've heard anything from Central America on MW,
and I'd love to again). Personally, I honestly, FIRMLY believe there will
always be SOMETHING on the 530-1710 band to DX, whether domestic or foreign. I
just can't picture it drying up completely.

Longwave, on the other hand, presents a different scenario. About 5 years ago,
I began DXing non-directional beacons with much interest, and now those are
slowly going away. Pity, since those are obviously much easier to ID than AM
stations! For DXers on the North American coasts, a future without NDBs on
longwave won't be as difficult to stomach, as they'll always have European
broadcast stations to go after. But for people like myself in the landlocked
middle of the USA, a longwave band without the beacons will be much more of a
challenge to DX.

Patrick,

True enough. I just turned 55, and I'm just hoping that enough analog signals
will remain to last my lifetime. Can't imagine a world without radio to DX. The
Chinese have a saying, "Make friends with change." I've lived long enough to
see the wisdom in that.

I can say that radio has been a lifelong hobby of mine, licensed as a ham at
age 9-and active in DXing even before that. I've tried a bit of everything.
Ham, SWL, AM, FM, TV, Public Service Bands-and enjoyed it all. There is magic
in the ether and I hope that the younger generation find something similar to
excite them.

[IRCA] RIP DX Tests (was: Re: Rackley on Synchronous AM Boosters)

2017-01-06 Thread Rick Dau
Sorry, DXers of the world, but it's high time that DX tests be done away
with

Back in the day, some unscrupulous participants in the hobby made it a practice
of waiting about 2-3 weeks after tests were conducted, looking through the
pages of DX News, DX Monitor, and other print publications, jotting down the
details of what OTHERS were hearing, then sending their own faux reports based
from those details off to the testing stations. Very often, engineers would
happily mail back QSLs to the offenders, totally unaware of what was going on.
Fortunately, a select few DID get wise to the shenanigans being perpetrated and
then began conducting tests with the caveat that reports had to be mailed
within a scant few days (say, within a week or so) after the test, or they
would simply not reply to the report. This was, in effect, to curtail the
cheating.

But with the progress of technology comes a downside. Through reflectors such
as these, along with message boards, DX chatrooms (WHEN they work), and other
means of instant communication, the cheaters are once again seeing the
information that others are posting without making their OWN efforts to hear
the stations. DX tests were fun while they lasted, but, IMHO, they need to be
put down.

2016-12-23 Thread Rick Dau

I'm one of them. Mark, I remember on our tour of the Pavek Museum in 2013,
when our guide talked about Marconi, and I happened to turn over my shoulder
and mention the name "Nathan Stubblefield" to whoever was behind me, it drew a
quizzical look from said tour guide. Reading what I've read about
Stubblefield, I throw my support behind him as coming up with the important
innovations in broadcasting wireless signals a good 5-6 years before Marconi
did, although there ARE those Marconi supporters out there who will say that
what Stubblefield simply invented was, in effect, the world's first wireless PA
system, rather than radio.

Everybody seems to know the name Marconi. They often think of him as the

being "the", or at least, "a" father of radio, he was in fact experimenting
with wireless telegraphy, not radio. In fact, Marconi was never interested in

Yes, I passed the SAC reception info on to ndblist yesterday. One guy in
FL heard SAC; and one guy in France heard it and even included an audio
clip. It seems to have 400 Hz sidebands. No one on ndblist has any
additional info. It's a brand new signal at least for ndblist.

Re: [IRCA] WWVA 1170 on ND pattern past KFAQ

2016-09-05 Thread Rick Dau

Randy, two come to mindWCHS-580 and WBES-950, both in Charleston. Problem
you have at your location is that WIBW covers 580 fairly well at night, and
KWOS in Jeff City is shooting a lobe almost right in your direction. But those
are probably going to be your best bets.

Glad you got a definite ID on my this, Glenn. I have had WWVA here in southwest
Missouri in years past with Tulsa nulled, but at most a couple of times.
Now--can anyone suggest any targets whose transmitters really ARE within WV
that get out well to the west?

Re: [IRCA] ULR DX……..3 NEW Stations for the ULR LOG…….

2016-08-17 Thread Rick Dau
Logged and QSL'ed from Iowa City for their DX TEST on December 16, 1991. To
date, it is still the only Delaware station I've logged from anywhere in the
Midwest. Still holding out hope for someday hearing Georgetown on 900 -- I've
been trying for it for many years at sunrise every February and March.
WDEL-11150, which I also have on my target list, will be a bit tougher.

I logged and QSL'd WDOV 1410 from Seward AK in the 60s when the dial was more
clear. Without checking, it may have been during the Eastern Blackout. I have
never heard it here, even though I have tried for it.

Re: [IRCA] Kiwa Loop

2016-07-31 Thread Rick Dau
Which is the reason I'd have to pass on it. I need something that'll fit
inside a suitcase or a gym bag. I have a Grundig AN-200 to cover MW with, but
I'm now on the hunt for a portable loop or passive antenna to DX longwave with.
The Quantum QX Pro loop that I've owned for the past 5 or 6 years is now
officially kaput, and the last e-mail I sent to the manufacturer about having
the short in it fixed went unanswered, so it's going up on the auction block at
the joint club convention in Kansas City.

Re: [IRCA] 850 Minnesota

2016-07-09 Thread Rick Dau

Steve, I'm not aware of any daytimers on 850 that were given sunset + 2 hours.
KFUO in Clayton (St. Louis), Missouri (Neil, I think this is the station you
were thinking of earlier) is allowed to stay on until sunset in Denver, but,
AFAIK, every other daytimer on 850 -- WQRM included -- should be signing off at
its local sunset.
