closed those PRs, will follow [~zyork] and [~busbey] and tried to only attach
the PR link next time (if that does not work, will follow what [~reidchan]

FWIW, most of my docs patches of late end up as PRs because that's how Misty
prefers to review. I view it similar to when the FB folks really wanted to
review stuff via phabricator. It limits your pool of reviewers to those who
like that tool. But if folks post it some other place when requested I don't
see the harm.

(NB I'm pretty sure QABot gets confused if you both link to a PR and also
attach patches to JIRA)

[~reidchan] In the how to close Github PRs, it suggests that people are free to
use PRs if they wish. I do think it could use some more docs. Let me make sure
the QA bot part of it works and then I'll write up a section. Thanks for the
suggestion!

Here's the section on PR preference in the book:

As a project we work to ensure there’s a JIRA associated with each change, but
we don’t mandate any particular tool be used for reviews. Due to implementation
details of the ASF’s integration between hosted git repositories and GitHub,
the PMC has no ability to directly close PRs on our GitHub repo. In the event
that a contributor makes a Pull Request on GitHub, either because the
contributor finds that easier than attaching a patch to JIRA or because a
reviewer prefers that UI for examining changes, it’s important to make note of
the PR in the commit that goes to the master branch so that PRs are kept up to
date.

{quote}it is simpler to create, review, and push commits from a PR{quote}
No question, i didn't argue about this.

AFAIK, hbase has been years using jira-patch-rb way, and nowhere encourages
contributors to create PRs.
At least, we should have a dev@DISCUSS to determine whether to make {{PR}} as
an option to make contributions. If so, we should document well how
contributors and committers to do.

[~reidchan] I asked [~taklwu] to use PRs to review his code as, in my opinion,
it is simpler to create, review, and push commits from a PR (and [~busbey] had
tipped me off that the QA bot should work with PRs). I'd be happy to discuss
with you further on why I think it makes sense to utilize PRs, but that's not
really the original intent here.

Thanks for the insight on closing PRs. I will take that into account in the
future.

[~taklwu] can you please close the PRs for this issue to avoid having to ammend
the commit (it's already pushed).

yeah that section does a good job of covering the limitations of GitHub PRs
currently:

http://hbase.apache.org/book.html#_close_related_github_prs

QABot should work with PRs though, so long as you attach a link to the PR and
put jira into Patch Available status. If it doesn't then please point me at the
issue before finding a work around.

PRs are also automatically closed if there is a commit (on master only?) with

I don't know [~zyork] Perhaps someone else knows. I see that the new repos
we've added, hbase-connectors and hbase-operator-tools, are in apache gitbox
which is github hosted and I had to connect my apache and github profiles
(after being added to the asf group). Perhaps then it'll be possible for
committers to close out PRs?

Resolving. Anyone know why I don't see an option to be able to close the PRs?
[~busbey] [~stack] [~Apache9]

I think [~taklwu] can close them, but from a maintenance perspective, it would
be good for a committer to be able to close PRs.

Nice fix. Thanks [~taklwu].

+1 for branch-2.0 ([~Apache9] you good for branch-2.1?).

Thanks for the pointer [~busbey] into compat guidelines. I think this change
worth bending the rules for. This patch makes it so WAL fs config is what
operators would expect whereas what was there previous would have them baffled.
Let me add a note to this effect up in the RN.

+1. Needs a release note about the change in default value. I'd consider this a
breaking change for operational compatibility, which our compatibility
guidelines suggest would make it unacceptable for maintenance releases
([ref|http://hbase.apache.org/2.0/book.html#_footnoteref_3]), so please make
sure the RMs for 2.0.1 and 2.1.1 are okay with it before pushing to those
branches.

+1 Although that wrapped provider stuff is kinda ugly (not your fault though :)
).

Can you reattach patch to try and get a clean testing run? The only failure was

Thanks [~liuml07], uses a new {{conf}} for each of new test, also further
isolated those added tests from existing tests.

In test, {{conf}} is static, which makes the newly added tests problematic as
they seem to assume clean conf object.

Another suggestion is to use different providers in {{testOnlySetWALProvider}}
and {{testOnlySetMetaWALProvider}}.

I was trying to work on this issue and related code in
[WALFactory|https://github.com/apache/hbase/blob/master/hbase-server/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/wal/WALFactory.java#L253]
(master branch and branch-2) and found that the default is AsyncFSWALProvider
if {{hbase.wal.meta_provider}} is not set.

so, may I ask what is the `Operator` means here?
