Sven,

You might try renaming libc.so.5 and libdl.so.1 in the directory
/lib/i386/green_threads to some other name just so that it
can't be found by those names. If I am not mistaken it is a conflict
with the versions of the libs that come with the JDK and the ones linux
uses. If this doesn't work send the output from the command "ldconfig
-v".

Hope this helps,
K.R.

`S.u.S.E. Linux' : Version 5.3

  Symptom:

Java Workshop doesn't start correctly after an update to S.u.S.E.
5.3 and aborts with a core dump.

  Cause:

Together with S.u.S.E. Linux Version 5.3 comes a newer ld.so
library than needed by Java.

  Solution:

There are twopossibilitiesto use JavaWorkshop despite the
presence of the new library :

  - Install the package ldso.rpm of a former version of S.u.S.E.
Linux.

  - Displace the file
 such that it
cannot be used anymore by Java.

Does HP implement native threads? If so,
you may have wildly different results running
with the Blackdown JDK, which uses green threads.

Try running it on Windows NT using either Sun or MS Java;
I think they support native threads.
If it fails there, too, it may be your code.

I haven't heard of any.

It'd probably be a fresh implementation rather than a port,
given the nature of JMF. There have been other implementations-
check out Whipped Butter for MacOS - so it's not impossible.

Hardest part is, Linux lacks much codec support.
You might be able to leverage xanim's codebase, though.

Actually, the Corel NetWinder and there other products are all on Linux.
In fact, they announced that it is now RedHat 5.1 (it used to be a

the conclusion i have reached (after much agony) is that java is only

JDK 1.1.x will only transfers text from a JVM to the peer operating

[off-topic] Putting codebase in classpath, or equivalent

1998-10-30 Thread Robert Dodier

Hi there,

This is a little bit off-topic -- sorry for the intrusion.

I am running some RMI applications on a machine which doesn't have
the necessary classes installed -- the RMI class loader runs out
and grabs the ones that are needed, using the codebase property.
That works great.

I like that so much, I wonder if I can get javac to do sort of the
same thing. What I want is to name a class in a program I am developing
on the class-less machine and somehow let javac know that I mean a
class on another machine. That would be very convenient for
development. I would really rather not mirror the class files.

javac doesn't seem to notice codebase. Is there some way I can get the
effect I want -- which is essentially to put the codebase in the
classpath, so to speak.

I wonder if I will have to obtain the javac source and hack it to
use RMIClassloader.loadClass instead of Class.newInstance or something
like that. I guess I'm assuming that Class.newInstance ignores
the codebase -- maybe I should hack Class.newInstance instead??

Thanks for any ideas you might have.
Robert Dodier

Yay mobile code!

I think you could just build a new javac that has a different
ClassLoader. Someone might have even done this already, it's sort of
obvious. javac itself is trivial, all the real work is in
java.lang.Compiler and its friends.

One thing that's complicated, though - the Java compiler loads .java
files as well as .class files. The ClassLoader doesn't, as far as I
know. So the logic might be a bit screwy.

Re: Java Web Server1.1 on Linux

1998-10-30 Thread Joel Shellman

I am just attempting to set up the JWS on Linux. I noticed there is
already a thread about it and so I thought I'd jump in and ask the same
question because it isn't working for me either.

I'm using Redhat 5.1.

If I try to run that diff patch, it doesn't find the file
startup_wrapper. After running the patch, running the:
cd native; make -f Makefile.lnx install

results in the error:
Makefile.lnx:45: *** missing separator. Stop.

I did go in and do the diffs by hand on the Makefile, but then I got
errors during the make because the other diffs didn't work on the other
.c files.

Also, nearly all the Hunks fail in the patch process.

Any ideas?

1.1.7 is imminent. I believe it's already available on the PowerPC platform,
