jdk1.2pre2: Memory hungry??
Hello, I installed the JDK from ftp://tuiasi.ro/pub/lang/java/jdk/1.2/pre-v2/glibc2.1/jdk-1.2pre_v2-1.i386.rpm set PATH, NS_JAVA=true and THREADS_FLAG=green and tried to test out wether I got the right java version by dilbert:/usr/share # java -version For about 40 seconds nothing happened, but top said: 10:18am up 9 days, 16:53, 4 users, load average: 2.11, 1.60, 1.27 65 processes: 38 sleeping, 4 running, 23 zombie, 0 stopped CPU states: 48.9% user, 51.0% system, 0.0% nice, 0.2% idle Mem: 62852K av, 62232K used,620K free, 4332K shrd, 2408K buff Swap: 128516K av, 32756K used, 95760K free 1620K cached PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT LIB %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND 1 root 10 0604 0 RW 0 50.1 0.0 3791m init 3227 root 9 0 33052 30M28 R 0 47.1 50.2 1:13 java 3250 root 4 0 428 380 256 R 0 1.9 0.6 0:02 top which means, that the "java" process growed to over 30 MB (!) while doing effectively nothing. I'm curious what the "init" process was doing in the background... I hope someone can help as the JDK in this state is unusable for me. Re: IBM released an early jdk for linux
>Is the 90 day evaluation license for real? I took this as a sign that this was only a prerelease alpha, that they will be having a more stable version soon. A bit frustrating, but I think it makes sense in this context. >On a serious note, how will the IBM JVM impact the Blackdown port? That's a good question. There's no reason not to have multiple ports. The Blackdown folks know a *lot* about how Linux works. JavaGrande
Hi Java Linuxers,
JavaGrande (the ACM Conference on Java for High Performance Network Computing)
is in San Francisco today and tomorrow -- see
http://www.cs.ucsb.edu/conferences/java99/ for details. I'll be giving
a dinner talk tonight on my system for enabling high-performance
communication and I/O in Java ("Jaguar"). If anyone on the Java-Linux
list is going to be there, I'll be at the conference most of today
and tomorrow, and I'd like to meet you!
Cheers-
Matt

My impression is that the problems that people had getting Redhat's kaffe and the blackdown port to coexist occurred mostly in older versions (old meaning < RH 6.0 and < Kaffe 1.0b4). When I installed RH 6.0, it did not install kaffe---I had to download and install the kaffe 1.0b4 RPM separately. This was via ftp, however, maybe things are different for CDROM installers. Kaffe 1.0b4 should coexist with the blackdown JDK. By coexist, I mean that you can have a kaffe with a --prefix=A and the blackdown JDK in directory B with A!=B and things should just work --- you can control which java environment is being used either by setting your PATH properly or by using an explicit qualification such as /opt/kaffe/bin/java or /opt/jdk1_1_7vx_a/bin/java. You do not need to set any environment vars for kaffe to work (just like for the JDK). If that doesn't work for you, please consider complaining to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To my knowledge, the kaffe1.0b4 Redhat RPM is compiled with --prefix=/usr and will install itself in /usr/bin. Unfortunately, because of shared library pathname limitations, you can't simply move it: you'll have to recompile it with a different --prefix if you want it somewhere else. Kaffe 1.0b4 should complain if you attempt to use Sun's classes.zip with it before its own Klasses.jar (this is an error that had led in older versions to coredumps and the like). This can happen if people set a CLASSPATH variable to include classes.zip. - Godmar -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[off-topic] stop MS bashing please (was: Re: -Xrunhprof:cpu=times)

I love Linux but my sister uses win98, my wife as well, my daughter is another one. Oh, and my dad is starting out with e-mail and computers at 55, guess what? I didn't recommend Linux just yet, but helped him install a good win98SE system with MS Office 2000. Bashing Microsoft doesn't make you "cool" and it's insulting to all the people we love that use MS products all day long. Moreover MS now has the resources to employ pretty smart people, in many ways it is setting the standard in interface and GUI programming. Maybe they are having trouble on the server front with the OS we all love on this list, but give MS-Office 2000 a test run some day and you will experience one polished and really well done set of applications. Why don't we recognize and respect competition for what it's worth?
