[JAWS-Users] Re: Windows Media Player and JAWS

2007-05-27 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

Carlene,

My work computer somehow installed Windows Media player version 11 during an
upgrade and I've had no problems. As you, I was hesitant to upgrade based
on what I had heard. I will upgrade at home too. I am running Win XP Pro
and JAWS 8. Hope this helps

 Hi:

I would like to know if anybody has had any experience with Media Player
11 in conjunction with JFW? I keep getting prompted to upgrade, but I
know of one person who has had trouble with 11, and my husband who is
sighted says it's set up a bit different than 10. I'm running JFW 7.10
with Windows XP. I don't want to get myself into something I shouldn't
because I'm not a computer wizard. Any feedback would be greatly
appreciated.

  Hi Al,

  Here are the steps.
  1 start menu
2 Hit the letter p for programs
3 Hit the letter m for Microsoft office sub menu, and enter
4 place focus on Microsoft outlook, but do not enter
5 hit the applications key, on a standard keyboard it is the 3rd key to
the right of the space bar
6 arrow up to properties and enter.
7 tab to the run combo box and arrow to normal window
8 tab to apply changes and enter
9 tab to ok and enter

once done, repeat steps to get window maximized
I noticed that you are running office 2000, so i don't know if you will
have a sub menu in your programs. if you don't just make sure you have focus
on Microsoft office before hitting the applications key.

Hi Al,

Thought i would pass this along. i went to Microsoft outlook properties
and changed the run window to normal window, and applied and okayed it. I
then went back into it and changed it back to maximum window. It seems to be
ok now. Can you try this for me? I'm kind of interested to see if it takes
care of your problem too. I'm thinking it is another quirky 8.0 thing. Of
coarse this is assuming that your using 8.0.
Hope it works.

I get this at times with Outlook 2000. I have not found a way to
correct it. What does help is once you open the message hit the Ctrl key to
silence then JAWS Insert key plus down arrow

  Hello everyone,
I was on the bmg music web site, and I wanted to fill out the form to join
the club. I went into forms mode so that I could type the information into
the edit boxes. For example where I needed to type in my first name jaws
just says edit. I tabbed through all of the edit boxes and it just says
edit. I went out of forms mode and looked around on the page, and then jaws
would read first name, last name, mailing address etc. It is very
frustrating to have to go in and out of forms mode just to get something
filled out. Is there any way to get jaws to read this information while I'm
in forms mode? I hope I have explained this well enough, so you all will
understand what I'm trying too do. I am running jaws 6.0, and I have
windows XP home. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
  Take care,
  Lisa

[JAWS-Users] Music Downloads

2007-03-10 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

I posted this to the blind-computing group this morning but never saw it
come through . In fact I have not seen many posts from either group today.
So I thought I'd send to this group to see what I heard.

Wondering if folks have any suggestions for JAWS friendly music download
sites where you purchased music by the song. I know Wal-Mart offers this
but the cash out portion is not overly JAWS friendly and then you have to
deal with the whole digital music licensing issue. Songs there download in
WMA format.

I'm looking for a site that you can download singles either in traditional
CDA format like on a CD or mp3

thanks

  Hi All,

I have used tax software in the past as a sighted user to prepare my tax
return and file it online.

I realize that the software I use isn't available in the U.S., but I do
know that the company that makes the software I use also has software
available in the U.S.

The software I use is called Quicktax and is by Intuit, the makers of
Quicken and Will Expert.

Anyway, I have been told by them that I can't use Quicktax 2005 to prepare
my 2006 income tax return.

The unfortunate part of all of this is that the 2005 version was the most
compatible version I've used with Jaws since I went blind.

While this completely bums me out because I'm about to spend money on
another version of Quicktax without knowing if it's accessible with Jaws or
if they've made any advancements in making it accessible, I'm wondering if
anyone here uses a particular software package that works well with Jaws.

I know that Intuit also makes TurboTax, and I believe that this particular
tax software is available in the U.S., however, can anyone tell me how well
it goes with Jaws and how difficult it is to use?

  Any responses would be welcome.

  Thanks,

  Victor

Patricia,

Tell your sister that Outlook does this a bit different. When she is
creating a new message and she's in the to field just start typing the
person's name in. She can either type part or all of it. Outlook will
fill it in automatically after she leaves the field. If there is more than
one match in the address book she will be prompted to choose which address
she wants once she goes to send the message. She can confirm what is in the
field by hitting the alt key and the # 3 key on the keyboard not the number
pad. Let me know if you have other questions.

[JAWS-Users] MS Word formatting

2007-01-18 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

Good morning all,

Figured I'd drop the group a quick note and questions before departing for
work. Yesterday I was working on a rather long and extensive MS Word
document at work and had to make many changes in one section. The problem I
was having was the section contained a lot of special text formatting,
indents, etc. I got very frustrated trying to block the section and just
make it all plain text and start over. What I finally did was block and
copy the section, saved it as plain text, and then copied and pasted it back
into the document. My question is: Is there a quick way in Word 2000 to
block a section of text and remove ALL formatting etc?

thanks
Al

[JAWS-Users] Silencing bracketed subject area

2007-01-16 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

Good morning,

I've asked this question before but can't seem to find where I put the
message with the answer. How do you get JAWS to not read the bracketed part
of the subject line in emails? Specifically, I like to cancel that part in
this group and others I subscribe to.

thanks in advance,
Al

Hey Guys Gals,
I have started a new Bible reading plan for the year. The one that I am
doing this year has each
days reading listed as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, and so on. For instance
February 1 would be listed as
Day 32. What I am needing to know, is there some type of Calendar or
Program available that would
have the dates identified as which day of the year that it is? Also, this
needs to be JAWS
friendly. If anyone can offer some info, it would be greatly appreciated.

See ya,

[JAWS-Users] Re: real speak voices in jaws 8

2007-01-03 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

David all,

I've used the real speak voices and have mixed opinions on them. I guess
they are okay but don't think they are that much better than the standard
voice. What would be nice is if they could do a quality voice like the one
when you first put the CD in to install and it reads the first screen. That
is a very clear and nice voice

thanks

Yes real speak voices from next up technologies will work with JAWS. I know
because I bought a couple of them right before I found out that I was
getting several for free with version 8.

Before purchasing RealSpeak from this site, check with FS to find out
whether or not the voices will work with JAWS before investing your money. I
don't know one way or the other whether RealSpeak that's not obtained
through FS will function with JAWS 8.0, so be sure before commiting
yourself.

Visit
http://www.nextup.com/scansoft.html
- sample and purchase page. You can there download short demo samples.
However, you would need to purchase one of their products or purchase JAWS8
to be able to use the voices.

[JAWS-Users] Nero version 7

2006-12-21 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

Good evening,

Wondering if anyone else experienced the following. I have JAWS version 8,
Win XP Pro and was using Nero version 6.6 with no problems or issues. I
installed Nero Version 7 so I could burn books etc. to CD's that I
downloaded from Audible.com . I was able to do this ok with the Nero
version 7.5 that I installed. The problem was my system became very
sluggish and JAWS seemed to labor when speaking. There was a delay in
hearing what I typed and it was very annoying. In uninstalled Nero and all
was fine. Has this occurred with anyone else?

thanks

[JAWS-Users] Re: Reg-Scrub and Scripts

2006-12-08 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

Walt,

Since I don't have a lot of experience with scripts, I have to ask an
obvious question. It the scripts don't overcome the focus problem what
sense does it make to install them? Do they fix other problems? Is there a
place one can go to take a 101 course in JAWS scripts?

thanks
Al

Yes, this is more or less the way it works. RegScrubXP (which I've used for
several years) has a serious focus problem and you _do_ need to keep
pressing ALT+TAB to move away from, then back to the main program window.
The scripts, as far as I've been able to determine, do nothing to overcome
this.

As to where you placed the scripts, you'd need to put them into the user
files folder in every version of JAWS you have installed if you want them
available regardless of which version you have loaded. There's no way to
have any scripts installed in only one location and have them available to
multiple versions of JAWS.

I need advice please if I installed the jaws scripts into the correct
version of jaws which I put them into 7.10 and am wondering if I should have
placed them into jaws 7.0?
When I ran the program I kept loosing the window I could route jaws to read
but just doing the say line I would hear blank and when I did the title it
said the usual no window is active..
When I went to the desktop and alt tab then the reg scrub window appeared.
So I'm wondering if this is the way this works or if the scripts were placed
into the wrong jaws version?

[JAWS-Users] Re: temp files

2006-12-06 Thread Alan Terrie Robbins

Rick

I believe the last time I ran a disk cleanup on Win XP it gave one many
check boxes that could be check or uncheck depending on one's preference.
It's funny you mention the cookies thing. Other people will say just the
opposite they will delete all of them every few times they boot up. Don't
most spyware and ad ware program remove them?

thanks

The problem with almost any of these programs is that they very well may
remove things that you _don't_ want removed. Some will remove the Internet
Explorer history, for example, or _all_ cookies and I never want either
deleted.
