[JAWS-Users] Re: Windows Media Player and JAWS

Hi,
I haven't had any problems with Windows Media Player 11 with Jaws 7.1 or
8.0. It just takes awhile getting used to the new re-design of the menu bar.

Carlene,

My work computer somehow installed Windows Media player version 11 during an
upgrade and I've had no problems. As you, I was hesitant to upgrade based
on what I had heard. I will upgrade at home too. I am running Win XP Pro
and JAWS 8. Hope this helps

 Hi:

I would like to know if anybody has had any experience with Media Player
11 in conjunction with JFW? I keep getting prompted to upgrade, but I
know of one person who has had trouble with 11, and my husband who is
sighted says it's set up a bit different than 10. I'm running JFW 7.10
with Windows XP. I don't want to get myself into something I shouldn't
because I'm not a computer wizard. Any feedback would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi,

To answer your question, scripts are saved in c:\documents and settings\your

also the folder that you should save your scripts in if you want to
customize Jaws settings for your user account.

The Java Access Bridge makes programs that use Java more accessible for a

 Hi RJ,
While in Internet Explorer, open the Jaws configuration manager.
Next, go to the set options, and select html settings.
Now, go to the links tab, and tab to text links.
Here you can choose from 5 options, and it is already set to on mouse
 over,
so up arrow once to use screen text.
now, tab to the okay button, hit enter to accept the changes, and then
 save
your changes when you close the manager.

Hi:
I finally updated to the latest version of jfw, and I had to go back to an
early version of jfw because it locked up my e-mail completely. I tried to
read my e-mail. I could read the subject lines when arrowing down to the
message, but once I hit inter on the message, nothing, and I had trouble
getting out of the message once in the message. There was no reading my
message and the escape key wasn't the way I got out of the message. Is
there something I can do to get jfw to read the messages and perform
properly. I am running xp home version.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Getting the correct version of IE from the JAWS window

2007-04-16 Thread Jeffrey Shockley

Hi, this condition exists when you press insert J to bring up the Jaws
window and then you press insert control v to get the jaws version and other
useful info. Oh, by the way, this was discussed a great deal on the
Jawsscripts email list.

 Hi all,
I've figured out a way of getting JAWS to announce the correct version
 of IE.
 1. Open script manager, and close the currently opened script file, if
 any.
 2. On the file menu, press enter on open shared file.
 3. Tab to the files of type combo box, scroll to header file
 4. In the list of files, select jfw.jsh and press enter to load the
 file.
 5. Find the line that says Find_IE (without the quotes), arrow to and
select \\browseui.dll and replace it with \\ieframe.dll
 6. Save and close the header file.
 7. On the file menu, press enter on open shared file.
 8. Shift tab to the files list, select jaws window.jss and press
 enter.
 9. Press control+s to recompile the scripts. You should hear compile
complete. If so, close Script manager, otherwise correct any errors
 found.
 10. Now press insert+j to open the JAWS window (or JAWS context menu,
depending on how JAWS is set).
 11. Press control+insert+v. JAWS should now announce the correct version
of IE. Note however that this will only work if you have IE7 installed
 on your machine.
Hope you find this of some use.

If you have IE7 on your machine, do the following, and you'll notice
something strange that can only be discovered through scripting grins.
 1. Press insert+j to open the JAWS window.
 2. Press control+insert+v, and note the incorrect Internet Explorer
 version.
 Hope that helps.

Yep. It is a stand alone email client like Popcorn but with more faetures. I
can't think of anything that you might need to know to use the client

Hi,
I think it might be very dusty inside your computer case. Dust acumulates very
quickly in there and it can effect the operation of your PC by blocking fans
and blocking the vents that let hot air from inside the PC escape and it can
cause other things to be effected.

[JAWS-Users] Re: U3 Thumb Drive

2007-03-29 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi Denny,
I have a U3 smart drive and JAWS will work on it. You have to download the JAWS
for Thumb drives and install it on the drive in the Removable disk partition.
When you insert the drive, an auto run dialog will pop up and you may have to
alt-tab back to it to get focus back to it. When the dialog comes up, the first
item will be JAWS using the program provided on the device. Then, just press
enter and JAWS wil then start. As far as I can tell, the U3 launch pad is not
that accessible; you have to use the JAWS cursor to be able to use it. Even
when you use the JAWS cursor to click on the buttons (which are not always
labeled as buttons), you can only access some of the launch pad's functions.
Other than that, JAWS works well with a U3 smart drive.
HTH and have a great day!

David,
Yes, it does require U3 compatible software that will work on the drive. I
know Jaws won't be able to be run from the thumb drive, but was wondering if
the applications installed on the thumb drive would be able to be read with
Jaws.
This is an old article, but here is more information about the U3 thumb
drive.

Applications Launch from USB Drives

U3 and partners add smarts to thumb drives, so users can carry desktops in
their pockets.

Technology startup U3 is expected to announce Monday the release of USB
drives based on its smart computing platform, which lets applications run
directly

off USB drives, independent of other storage devices.

Smart USB drives based on U3's software and hardware platform will allow
users to carry their entire PC in a USB drive, so that when they hook up to a PC

on the road, it will have the same look and feel as their work or home PC.

Vendors Ready

USB smart drives are expected to be announced by hardware vendors including
SanDisk and Verbatim at Demofall, occurring this week in Huntington Beach,
California.

Several software vendors, including America Online and the Mozilla
Foundation, are expected to announce products that run directly off the USB
smart drives.

U3's concept is about taking your whole personal workspace with you, not
just the data, but the files, folders, preferences, plug-ins, settings,
everything

you need, to make any PC feel and look and act like your own, said Kate
Purmal, CEO of U3. Applications on a U3-compliant USB drive are not tied to a

specific laptop or desktop, but are installed and launchable directly off
the drive, Purmal said.

The capability to run applications directly off USB smart drives gives
mobile users the choice of whether to work off their laptop or safely use a
public
computer, Purmal said. Users are already

happy with the simplicity and portability of USB drives, she said. You
just plug them in and they work, Purmal said.

Supporting Products

Verbatim will include U3's smart computing platform in its $99 1GB Store
'n' Go U3 Smart Drive, which is expected to be launched at Demofall. Kingston
will
introduce the DataTraveler line of USB smart drives with capacities of
512MB, priced at $42, and 1GB for $80. SanDisk, which backs U3 financially along

with M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers, is also expected to announce
U3-compliant smart drives at Demofall.

A few big software vendors are also expected to launch U3-compatible
products at Demofall. Mozilla is expected to announce U3-compliant versions of
the

Firefox Web browser and Thunderbird e-mail client. McAfee will announce an
antivirus engine to protect U3 smart drives from viruses. America Online will

announce a version of Winamp that will allow users to play audio and video
files directly off USB smart drives.

Products

already available

for U3 smart drives includes Powerhouse Technologies Group's Migo, which
can synchronize office files,

thumb drive now, but haven't played around with it that much.
Have you tried the portable version of Thunderbird? If so, how does it
work with Jaws?
The U3 drive I ordered is a 4 gig drive, so that should be plenty of space
for using various programs on it.
Thanks,
Denny

You are welcome. Yes, I believe they can be labeled. It is possible to
label them usingJFW for thumb drives. You can do anything you do with desktop
JFW (including installing scripts) with JFW for thumb drives. The only thing
JFW for thumb drives will not do is you will not be able to use a braille
display with JFW and JFW can not start automatically when Windows starts. I
have used Mozilla Firefox a little bit, and from what i was able to see (I was
only able to look at it for a few minutes), it was accessible. All of your
settings will be saved on the thumb drive and it will take at least 66.7 MB of
disk space to store JAWS and all of your settings.

  Hey, thanks!
Can the buttons be labeled? Or is that possible using Jaws on a thumb
drive.
Do you use any other applications launched from the thumb drive?

  Hi Denny,
I have a U3 smart drive and JAWS will work on it. You have to download
the JAWS for Thumb drives and install it on the drive in the Removable disk
partition. When you insert the drive, an auto run dialog will pop up and you
may have to alt-tab back to it to get focus back to it. When the dialog comes
up, the first item will be JAWS using the program provided on the device.
Then, just press enter and JAWS wil then start. As far as I can tell, the U3
launch pad is not that accessible; you have to use the JAWS cursor to be able
to use it. Even when you use the JAWS cursor to click on the buttons (which are
not always labeled as buttons), you can only access some of the launch pad's
functions. Other than that, JAWS works well with a U3 smart drive.
HTH and have a great day!

[JAWS-Users] Re: Adobe Acrobat?

2007-03-24 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Clear DayHi.
I have to agree that PDF995 does a good job makingWord documents save as PDF
files. PDF995 can also be used to make Power Point presentations save as PDF
files, which is very useful if you have a Power Point presentation that JAWS
can't seem to read correctly. I have not had any problems with PDF995 and I
have been using it since August of last year.
I am also using the free version.
HTH and have a great day!

If you want to create PDF files from Word documents, then go to
www.pdf995.com and download the PDF printer driver software. Once installed,
you can create a PDF file from any Windows application that you can print from.
The software is free if you don't mind seeing a beg page each time you print.
Otherwise, the program costs $9.95. It works great. I have used it for about
6 years. Back in 2002, I deployed about 350 copies of the program and saved
the company $$$ compared to what it would have cost to deploy the Acrobat
product. We used the Acrobat Distiller for awhile, but it was constantly
causing problems. PDF995 is a beautiful solution. I wish I had developed it.

I know that I am replying to my own message, but there are a few things I

The quick way to get to the layout dialog in the view menu is to go into
the menu and press the letter l which will take you into the Window Layout
dialog. You will land under the layout tab, on the checkbox which says
contacts. Check this box, and tab until you land on the apply button and
press it. Then, you can just close the dialog.

 Hi,

I tried to use the latest version of JAWS (8.0.1163) and found it screwed
 up
in Internet Explorer 6 even worse than earlier versions of JAWS 8. I am
 one
of the rare birds using Windows 2000 Professional so I'm not able to
 install
IE 7 so am forced to remain with IE 6. Now when I open IE JAWS 8
 (8.0.1163)
tells me that all links have the same label as the first one it happens to
land on when IE is opened. Even worse, if I shut down JAWS 8 and bring it
back up again it doesn't say anything at all as I tab around a web page.
 If
I resort to the JAWS Cursor I can tell that I'm positioned on links of
 differing labels.

My point here is to advise those of you using Windows 2000 Professional
 that
once again attempting to use JAWS 8 may not be an efficient use of your
 time
-- not at this point any way!

And folks, this is my own personal web page that is designed to be as
 JAWS-friendly as possible.
