I went from Version 8 to 13, and at the time, the price was $200 for the
software, and $200 for the SMA, so the total was $400. The price is much
cheaper now however, although I have not committed them to memory just yet,
but both should cost you less than $300.

Of course you can upgrade. You'll just have to pay for the SMA if you're
out. I think once you're behind a couple of JFW releases though, then the
cost gets a bit prohibitive. I've always stayed current, so don’t' recall at
the moment what it would be. I think though, I went from JFW 8 to 11 and it
cost me something like $440.00.

Re: [JAWS-Users] looking for a program to find and get rid of Windowserrors

2015-03-04 Thread Mike Boyd

Hi,

You will want to open the Run dialogue box by pressing the Windows logo key
+ the letter R. then type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes of course,
and the system file checker will start scanning your Windows files for
missing and corrupted files. It should take less than an hour for the scan
to run, and at the end, the scanner will report the system's status to you.
It will say that:

1. There were no corruptions found,
2. That there were corruptions found and fixed, or
3. There were Corruptions found, but they could not be repaired.

If the latter one appears, you would need to run a repair on your Windows,
using either a repair or the installation disk, and you will probably need
some sighted assistance, as you have to boot into safe mode to accomplish
this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] make wmp default player on xp

2015-03-04 Thread Mike Boyd

Hi Tom,

It depends on the format of the audio files, and the source of the radio.
You tube files are in the .flak format I believe, but WMP will only play mp3
and WMA files, Maybe one or two others, and you will have to go to the media
guide within WMP to find internet radio stations that will play on it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] update

2015-03-04 Thread Mike Boyd
You can upgrade your JAWS at any time as long as you have an active version
running on your computer, and you are still in the Freedom Scientific data
base as a current user. The upgradee will cost you the new price for the
version which you are running, plus the cost of the SMA if you choose to
purchase that as well.

Hi Jim: if I understand you correctly, try this.
1. Plug an r c a jack, into your victor reader stream headphone out jack.
2. Plug the other end of the r c a jack into the microphone in jack on your
computer.
3. Open total recorder.
4. Press play on your victor reader stream.
5. Press record in the total recorder program.
Try to know the length of the recording before you start, and monitor the
time so you know when to stop the recording, because you wont be able to
hear it while recording this way.
I recorded a thunderstorm, off a micro tape recorder to my computer this
way, the recording turned out fine.

With the folder that you want to change opened, open the context menu with
alt-v. Then choose o for options. If you have the items in the folder in
alphabetical order, the arrangement by name will be checked. Press enter
while you are focused on this option. The list will reverse from Z to A.

Re: [JAWS-Users] panda antivirus

2015-03-04 Thread Steve
It is quite easy to work with MSSE.

To find the settings button, open MSSE.

Find the home button by tabbing, or shift tab once from the quick scan radio
button in the scan options.

When you are on the home button, you can press right arrow to go into the other
options in MSSE like Settings, History, Update, etc.

Under settings, one of the options is to turn off active protection. If you do
that, you can run a different anti-virus program. You don't have to uninstall
MSSE completely.

Remember though, with any anti-virus program, you can't run any other
anti-virus program at the same time. This doesn't count things like malware
bytes which is a malware program unless you have their security suite.

Mario,
Below are steps to disable MSE from PC World... Unfortunately it might require
sighted assistance since I could not find a settings button and clicking on
real time protection with the Jaws cursor on the MSE home page does nothing
using Jaws 16 in windows 7.

From PC World
However, I recently needed to troubleshoot a program that wasn't working
properly, and, as always, the tech support department's first suggestion was to
"disable my antivirus program."

Normally I ignore this advice, but because the program in question involves a
lot of file downloading from various protected servers, I thought it might
actually be worth a try. Just one catch: How the heck do you disable Security
Essentials?

When you open the tool, there's no immediately obvious way. But if you
absolutely need to, here's how:

1. Find the Security Essentials icon in your System Tray (usually it's
represented by a little green house with a flag on top). Right-click it and
choose Open.

2. Click the Settings tab.

3. Click Real-time protection.

4. Uncheck the box next to Turn on real-time protection (recommended).

5. Click the Save changes button.

So that's the equivalent of switching Security Essentials to "off." Do that,
then go back to whatever you're trying to troubleshoot and see if it solves the
problem. (If it does, well, that's a whole other can of worms.)

Hi Jim: if I understand you correctly, try this.
1. Plug an r c a jack, into your victor reader stream headphone out jack.
2. Plug the other end of the r c a jack into the microphone in jack on your

Hi Mario,

I am still using Vipre 2015, and since the last update of JAWS 16, I now
can

access the schedules to set Vipre up to scan at specific times, choose the
type of scan that I want, and Vipre announces to me when it starts a scan.
There is an icon in the notification area that always tells you of Vipres
condition, whether it is updated or not, which it ddoes automatically, and
it shows the last date and time that the definition update took place. I
can
also access the quarantine, view the threats that were detected, and
delete
them if so desired. This is as much as I have been to do with any
Antivirus

program since using JAWS,and all that I have ever been able to do with
Vipre. All other settings, i.e. the firewall etc. are accessible too. I do
not know if Freedom Scientific is working directly with Threat Track

sI'm still using the 2014 version because of it's interface is somewhat
screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

I think there's a distinction to make between a program being accessible
versus being screen reader friendly, in that a program that is screen
reader
friendly allows a blind user to utilize that program more effectively
rather

than that program just being accessible, which does not promote useability
by the blind user. especially with a security suite, one has to respond in
a

timely manner, and for blind users, we need to be able to do the same. the
more screen reader friendly a program is, the more frequently a blind user
will use said program.

I welcome any thoughts, but not to much as to upset the moderators.

My answer made no sense, because of a typo. That 6 didn't belong there. I

I should not have to do math while reading a weather forecast. I am glad
someone fixed this particular problem.

Even easier --

Centigrade to Fahrenheit
Reduce by 10%, double, and add 32 - exact result

Fahrenheit to Centigrade
Subtract 32, Divide by 2, add 10% (this gets you within a degree)

There's a formula, and any other hams or SWL's on the list can check me. I
think it's the Centigrade temp times the quantity 56/9, plus 32. Remember,
32 F is 0 C.

Hi Robin.
I am noticing the same problem. The info for today's temps are F., but when

you get into extended forcast, it gives only C. I have looked on the
Weather underground site and can't find a place to change it to just F.
Maybe they will notice the problem and fix it soon.

Happened everywhere it seems, now back to normal but a more chatty forecast,
not necessary in my humble opinion in this case I want "just the facts."

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about Text columns

I change the columns to one from the page-layout tab on the ribbon, alt
followed by p, followed by j. Then you can choose one column. That can
present a problem, however, if you need to do any editing.
