Re: [JAWS-Users] Bullets in MS Word 2013

2017-06-19 Thread Steve
Yeah, they don't necessarily help in using Jaws. The point is if you are
writing a Word document and you want to make some specific points that will
stand out as they are read in a printed format in particular, although I
have embossed bulleted text in Braille before.

Thinkk of it as being similar to an outline, except that they are unnumbered
and generally all at the same level.

Even if you have a documented that is bulleted, you can set Jaws using the
speech schemes to not read those if you want to ignore them.

How do the bullits help in using Jaws?

The reason I ask, is because to me, just listening to them, they don't add
anything to the understanding of the material and just are a form of

When using the bullet feature in MS-Word, it provides a very clean visual
appearance. Let me see if I can explain. The bullet will be up against
the

left margin, or most frequently ¼ of an inch to the right of the left
margin. This is called the hanging indent. The start of the text will be
a
little to the right of the bullet. As an example, let's say that the
bullet

is 1/4 of an inch wide, and the space between the bullet and the start of
the text is 1/4 of an inch. This means that the text is starting 1/2 of
an
inch away from the left margin. This is called the left indent and is .5
of
an inch from the left margin. If the text you are typing is longer than
the

line and needs to wrap down to the next line, the start of that subsequent
line will be positioned right under the start of the previous line’s text
at
the 1/2 inch mark from the left margin. When you are at the beginning of
a
line, you can use the Insert+f command to learn about the hanging indent
and

left indent positions. If JAWS announces Aligned left, then you know the
text is flush against the left margin and there is not a bullet at the
start

of the information.

The use of bullets makes it easier for the visual reader to quickly move
from one item to the next. Personally, I find it also allows me to
quickly

move through bulleted information with JAWS.

Annette

Look in your settings center with insert-6 when you have your browser

Just type in Language and arrow down, it'll probably be the first result.

Kate,
To add to Nancy's response; you can select the column that you want by
holding down the control and pressing the space bar. Also, some keyboards
don't have the context menu, A K A, the applications key. If yours does not;
use the shift f10, it is the same thing.

Kate,

I pulled up JAWS to try this and it does work the same.

I highlighted the column I would have wanted alphabetized by holding down
the shift key and arrowing down.

Then I pulled up the context menu by pressing the key just to the left of
the righthand CTRL key. Sorry, if it's got an actual name, I don't know it
offhand. But to the right of the spacebar there are four keys and it's the
third in from the spacebar or, as I said, just to the left of the CTRL key
which is at the far right.

Hope that didn't totally confuse you. :)

Nothing worked.

So does anyone know of a partition manager that actually is accessible?

left margin. When you are at the beginning of a line, you can use the Insert+f
command to learn about the hanging indent and left indent positions. If JAWS
announces Aligned left, then you know the text is flush against the left margin
and there is not a bullet at the start of the information.

The use of bullets makes it easier for the visual reader to quickly move from
one item to the next. Personally, I find it also allows me to quickly move
through bulleted information with JAWS.

Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws key + space

2017-06-19 Thread Mike B.
Hi Terry,

Below is a list of commands available after pressing, Insert / Jaws key +
Spacebar, to open the Layered Keystroke feature:
Search commands press J.
Repeat last background notification from Skype press Shift+R.
Show recent speech history press H.
Clear recent speech history press Shift+H.
View text on clipboard press C.
Select text between marked place and current position press M.
Customize web page with Flexible Web press X.
ResearchIt press R.
OCR Feature Layer press O.
Table Navigation Layer press T.
Switch to your recent Windows Live Messages press Number row 1 through 5.
Text Analyzer press A.
Mute Synthesizer press S.
Lock Keyboard press L.
>From Jaws help about the OCR feature:

Convenient OCR
Frequently, you will encounter images that contain textual information.
These can include a PDF file, the setup screen of an application, or the
menu of selections for a DVD movie. While these images contain text that is
readable by a sighted person, JAWS is unable to read the text as it is part
of the image.

The Convenient OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature enables you to
access any image on the screen that includes text, or recognize all of the
text in a PDF document. With just a few simple keystrokes, JAWS will
recognize the image in a matter of seconds and activate the JAWS cursor so
you can navigate the resulting text. The recognized text will be in the same
location as the actual image on the screen. In order to differentiate the
recognized text from other text that may be in the window, JAWS will use a
different voice when it encounters the recognized text. When you activate
the PC cursor, or switch to another application or dialog box, the text is
removed and you will need to perform the OCR again.

If you open a PDF document and there is no text available to read, you can
perform a keystroke that will recognize the entire document and place the
resulting text into the Results Viewer for reading. You can then use
standard reading commands to review the text or select and copy sections of
content for pasting in other applications.

To use Convenient OCR, the following layered keystrokes are available:

INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D. Recognizes the currently open PDF document.
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W. Recognizes the current application window that has
focus.
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, S. Recognizes the entire screen.
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, C. Recognizes the currently selected control, such as a
graphical button.
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, Q. Cancels recognition while it is in progress.
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, QUESTION MARK. Speaks a brief help message describing
the commands in the OCR layer.
The following examples illustrate just some of the uses of this feature.

You insert a DVD movie into your computer which brings up a menu allowing
you to select from various DVD features. You press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W and
after a few seconds, JAWS will alert you that OCR is complete. At this
point, the JAWS cursor will be active and you can navigate around the screen
using the ARROW keys and read the text of the menu. When you hear the option
you want, press NUMPAD SLASH to perform a left-mouse-click, or INSERT+NUMPAD
PLUS to route PC to JAWS to activate the option. Prior to JAWS 13, this menu
would have been completely inaccessible.
Note: Depending on the type of screen the DVD displays and the quality of
the text, the Convenient OCR may not always work. Some DVD screens will be
recognized better than others.

You open a PDF in Adobe Reader which turns out to be inaccessible. Press
INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D to have JAWS begin recognizing the entire document.
After several seconds, the contents of the PDF file are displayed in the
Results Viewer for reading. Use standard reading commands to review the text
or select and copy sections of content for pasting in other applications.
For example, you could select all, then copy and paste into a Microsoft Word
document, which you could then save.
Note: The OCR process takes longer for larger PDF files. As text is
recognized, it is added to the end of the existing text already in the
Results Viewer. This allows you to continue reading without interruption as
the document is processed. If you are currently not reading using Say All,
JAWS announces the current line as new text is added to the Results Viewer
to indicate that OCR is still in progress.

Note: If the PDF document requires a password, you will be prompted to enter
it when you first press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D. You must enter the correct
password before the OCR process will continue.

You try to install or use an application whose interface is not accessible,
such as AcronisR True ImageT Home 2011 or 2012. If no text is readily
available when pressing TAB or when using the JAWS Cursor, you can try
Convenient OCR. Start with the PC Cursor and press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W to
recognize the text of the welcome screen graphic. You can then use the JAWS
Cursor and NUMPAD SLASH (left mouse button) to move to and choose what are

When using the bullet feature in MS-Word, it provides a very clean visual
appearance. Let me see if I can explain. The bullet will be up against the
left margin, or most frequently ¼ of an inch to the right of the left
margin. This is called the hanging indent. The start of the text will be a
little to the right of the bullet. As an example, let's say that the bullet
is 1/4 of an inch wide, and the space between the bullet and the start of
the text is 1/4 of an inch. This means that the text is starting 1/2 of an
inch away from the left margin. This is called the left indent and is .5 of
an inch from the left margin. If the text you are typing is longer than the
line and needs to wrap down to the next line, the start of that subsequent
line will be positioned right under the start of the previous line’s text at

Hi Kate,

I'm still using Window-Eyes for the time being but I would think the steps
are the same.

First highlight the names that you want alphabetized.
Then use the context menu and arrow up to sort. The first option is "sort A
to Z." If that's what you want just press enter.

Hope that works for you.

I'm still using Window-Eyes for the time being but I would think the steps are

First highlight the names that you want alphabetized.
Then use the context menu and arrow up to sort. The first option is "sort A to

Hope that works for you.

[JAWS-Users] Accessing an adobe job app.

Hello again, everyone.

Below is a link to our town and on it is a link to the application for
Recruitment Coordinator. When clicking on the link to apply, the Adobe doc
comes up, but not editable, as far as I can see. One of the city employees
in HR says it is fillable online. I'm going to try other browsers to see if
they can pull up an editable adobe doc.

Right now, I have tried this with Internet Explorer, and am using Windows 10
creator edition.

Thanks for any ideas. Here is the link to the job, and on this page is the
link to the app itself.

[JAWS-Users] Second message about creating braille files from Kindle files.

2017-06-19 Thread Judy Jones
Hello, Everyone,

Can this be done, turning the text of a Kindle document into a text file? I
have heard of ways of doing this. One of our clients is a student who buys
books through Kindle, then does this, runs it through Duxbury, then prints
the results on his braille embosser.

When I asked him about this one time, he says the way he does this is
convoluted, and there are probably easier ways of doing this now. This
conversation we had back then was a general inquiry on my part, and I am no
longer in touch with this gentleman.

Thanks for any ideas on the subject.

Control+Shift+L will not bring up a list of bullets; it will add filled

followed by the letter U. Once the bullets library pops up, use your arrow

Hi.

I always type an asterisk with a space where I want my bullet. For me this
is in bulleting paragraphs or sentences, and at the beginnings of lines.

Hi Lenny,
Yes, you will get that message when all of the unchecked items have been

Actually, if the programs have already been uninstalled from the system
then the unchecked items in the startup list will not cause any problems,
they are just harmless remnants.

Rick, this is quite interesting. All but Ccleaner monitoring have been
cleaned. For Ccleaner I get the message that I either need admin privileges
or that there is no entry in the registry.
Ccleaner is one that I removed the registry entries It won't hurt to have
that one in the list.

Hi Lenny,
Make sure that the items you want to remove from the startup tab are
unchecked.
After that, close the system configuration utility, and then run
msconfigdisabled.
When you run the script, it should ask if you want to remove any items, and
you need to tab to the yes button and spacebar that.
At this point, it should give you the name of an item, and ask if you want
to remove it, and you will tab to the yes button and spacebar it.
Sometimes it is necessary to use the Jaws cursor to get the info you are
looking for.
Give this a try and let us know what happens.

I hope I said this right, at least it is the way it works for me.
To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com
Subject: [JAWS-Users] FS podcast

Last week Jaws asked me if I wanted to listen to latest podcast. At that
time I was doing something else that I needed to complete in a timely
fashion so I said later.

Friday my computer decided it had to have the Creator update and nagged
until I finally allowed it to happen. After the many restarts I got the
message about the podcast again and left it on the screen as I needed to go
to lunch with friends. When I got home the message had disappeared and I
have not seen it again.

OK, so I went to the website only to be told to down load I have to right
click and go the save as target, sounds simple but when I brought up the
context menu there was no move to target, tried a couple of times, then had
to move on to do something else.

So, why did the context not work, and why on a page set up by a company who
knows better must I right click on a link instead of have a real link to
press enter on. I understand the concept, and manage on other pages but in
my humble opinion I should not have to manage multiple keystrokes to get a
file when one would do on a site that is supposed to be for use with screen
reading software.

Also, why would the message have disappeared because I could not take the
time to listen and be gone an hour later. I may go to get this later, maybe
not. I can't be a convention attendee so assume any deals that are offered
will be for those who are attending, and if that is incorrect, I never win
anything ever so but I was interested in the braille discussion, maybe.

Annoyed that I have to do more work than needed to get something from an
accessible or supposedly accessible site.

Maybe my annoyance is out of proportion, I realize that but then I am in
Arizona where the high is to be around 119 degrees today, heat of that kind
always annoys me.

[JAWS-Users] FS podcast

2017-06-19 Thread Rose

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is it possible in Jaws

2017-06-19 Thread Paul
That being said, the detect language option works well with Word. For
example, I'll be typing a story in English but need to quote a
Spanish-speaking character. The moment I type the Spanish phrase into
the doc and read it back, JAWS switches from Englis to Spanish, then
back to English after the Spanish phrase has been read. Works
great...but the L.A. Spanish reads too fast for my North American ears. LOL

Hello All

Have actually figured it out. You must make sure that detect language
option is not checked before switching to another language with
Control+Windows +L language switching command.

Hello All

Is it possible to switch to another language voice profile , say from
English to Spanish and back again, when running a program like Word?

Thanks, Phil

First, thanks for replying. Second, I am uncertain as to how to do any of
that, so I have to ask what you mean in reference to the "regular" fb.

Facebook has a business version and it is free. I found it much harder to
use than their standard version and I wish I have just set it up as a
regular FB page. They are always looking to get you to advertise or use
paid services but you don't have to do it. Why not just set up a business
page on the regular FB?

Morning all.

Can anyone tell me if there are instructions for creating a business page on
facebook, and if so, what are they? Also, if there are any charges for doing
so? I am using JAWS 17, Windows 10, IE 11 all on a Dell laptop. Many thanks
in appreciation.

Re: [JAWS-Users] win 7 msconfig

2017-06-19 Thread Lenny McHugh

In the start up tab there are items listed that have been uninstalled and
removed. , Nokia, ahead Nero, Ccleaner to name a few. Doing a windows f file
search none can be located. Doing a search in regedit none can be located.
How/where can I clean this up?

Hello again.
I have not received a reply to my attached note, so I thought I would try
again.

Here's another description of the problem.
You know how in MS word you might put 'draft' in the background on every
page as you work on the final version?
Then you have the ability to type over it.
Conceptually, that's what I received in an email.

I can only read the background.
How do I read the text sitting on top of it?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Ken

Hi listers.

I use Windows 7, Jaws 18 and Microsoft Outlook 2010.

I received an email that Jaws will only read the background text in the

Not the message text that sits on top of the background text (it is a
company logo).

Any ideas as to how to read the 'real' text?

Thanks, be well.
