Yes, the "task switching" thing has something to do with Windows 10 UI and
has been noted by NVDA users, too. Just Microsoft mucking with the works,
again, making everybody's life inconsistent. :P

I'm not sure if this is related, but I've lately noticed JAWS verbalizing
"Task switching," which I don't recall hearing before. In the past, and
sometimes still today, I'd hear instead the name of the program I've
switched to. But often I now have to do a title command to confirm the
program has opened. Opening a program or webpage can already be a chore,
since I need to be careful not to type anything before loading has
completed. If I don't give it enough time, I have to close and start all
over again. This "task switching" distraction only compounds the annoyance.

This is because JAWS will now (since version 17) automatically shut down
when there is a "not responding" issue with a particular program. I see this
most often when switching into or out of Adobe Acrobat. JAWS does not seem
to play well with that program on my system, and I often have to wait that
20 or 30 seconds for JAWS to start up again.

Does your employee hear the "JAWS Home Edition" or "JAWS Professional
Edition" after the long delay -- then it is indeed JAWS restarting after
such a shutdown.

In the Shared Settings folder there is a default.jcf file that you can edit
with notepad. On my system it is located: C:\ProgramData\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\enu\Default.JCF

Near the end of this file is a section titled [AutoRestart] where you can
disable this "feature" or extend the time before JAWS shuts down and
restarts. A following section also lets you decide how long to delay for
specific applications. See if disabling or changing the delay times helps.

Be sure only to edit this file in a simple editor like Notepad to avoid
inserting other ASCII characters.

it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to

JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

it easier to find the print screen option. One way you can find it now is to
press JAWS key+1 on the number row above the letters to invoke JAWS' key

something I was working on to my mum the other day, but she couldn't see
anything on the screen. My brother had a look at it tonight while I was out
and said it doesn't look like a hardware issue it looks more likely a
software issue. When mum told me this I remembered the Jaws screen shade. I
don't recall turning it on and I have no idea how to find out if it is on or
not. I have spent some time in the different menu options tonight but can't
find any reference to it. Could someone please tell me how this is turned on
and off so I can see if this is the problem.
I am thinking more and more this could be the problem since this is a
brand-new laptop so there shouldn't be any hardware issues. If it isn't
Jaws, then I will have to contact Acer helpdesk and see what they suggest.
Thanks for any help.

The most effective means I have found for confirming whether the

an insert plus v or capslock plus v if you are using the laptop layout

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

2018-03-08 Thread chris judge
It's been happening more and more with me as well, not only when I switch
between programs, sometimes it happens when waiting for a page to load in
IE, or when navigating in ms office 2016. There doesn't seem to be any real
pattern.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

Good morning all! I'm trying to help with one of our employees here at work
on an issue where JAWS freezes unexpectedly when switching from one window
to another using the Alt Tab key. The issue is difficult to resolve because
it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to
three times a day on average, and is hindering his efforts to perform his
job. I have offered several solutions, but nothing has worked yet. When
JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

I wanted to reach out to the list to see if any of you had any ideas as to
how I could minimize this behavior. I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks very much!

Teresa, no, Eric is saying that VFO will work with the F11 key to help making
it easier to find the print screen option. One way you can find it now is to
press JAWS key+1 on the number row above the letters to invoke JAWS' key
identifier mode. Then look for the three keys that normally reside together at
the top right of the keyboard. On my keyboard, the one on the left is the
printscreen key, and JAWS will verbalize its name for you. to get out of key

I have been using Jaws for about 18 years, and I have my verbosity level set

This way I have the best control over exactly what Jaws speaks.
You can adjust Jaws to your liking with time as you become more familiar

For example, in beginner verbosity mode, when you press CTRL+C, JAWS
says "copied selection to clipboard". In the other verbosity modes,
JAWS simply announces "copied".

[JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

2018-03-08 Thread Mike Mote

Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Inquiry

2018-03-08 Thread David Ferrin
I have heard the saying that it is easier to ask for forgiveness then to ask
for permission. Fortunately in this case neither apply since your message is
fine for the list, so discuss away.

Evening all.
I apologize if this is off topic. I have Comcast for our internet. I cannot
seem to be able to connect with the Comcast internet, but I am connected
with Xfinity. Can anyone tell me, off list if necessary, as to how to
connect with the Comcast aspect of my internet? I am using JAWS 2018,
Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. Thanks in advance.

You don't have to be crazy to run a list like this, but it does help.
