Re: [JAWS-Users] wlmjunk folder

Lenny,

I've had the same problem with messages from the Blind Phones list all going
into my junk folder. I think the only remedy is to go to your ISP on the web
and try to find a way to make those domains part of a safe senders list.

I am using win 7 and wlm 2012. I just looked at my wlm junk folder
and there were almost 100 messages from the past 3 or 4 days. Quite a few
were from this list. Probably the majority but many from other groups to
which I subscribe. Not all messages from each group were flagged as junk.Any
idea on why a few from each group are flagged?

Hi Fred,
If you keep shift + Tab do you ever get to the folders? If I shift + Tab I
get those same search fields you get but if I do it again and again I end up
back at the inbox. I am wondering if some how you closed the folder view.
You might need to have a sighted person look and see if your folder list is
there on the left side.
Let me know what you find out.

Hi, George. Your question is valid but slightly different from the original one
in this thread.

The fastest way I know to get to the top of the folders list is to press
control-e while outside the messages. Tab twice to find yourself in a list of
folders. Press home to get to the top folder.

You'd want to be doing something there, such as creating a new folder.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings

2018-05-29 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Andy,

A long time ago it was necessary to uncheck this item in order to force
Firefox to don't use Direct3D even on Windows Vista and newer, which
prevented to use JAWS cursor. It was not related to JAWS Virtual PC Cursor
support.
Problems with Firefox 57 and newer with JAWS are not related to hardware
acceleration, but to the fact by default Firefox 57 and newer use a
different process for each tab, and unlike Chrome the infrastructure for
transferring content of different processes to asistive technologies is not
as accurate.

Regarding hardware acceleration, it unloads a bit the CPU by processing
media content like videos and games in the GPU (the graphics card or video
adapter) instead of the CPU or processor. This is especially convenient on
slow CPUs like the ones of low end netbook computers or some older ones,
but perhaps more power consumming and not as useful on more powerful CPUs.
Anyway, I always prefer to turn this on in order to leave CPU free for most
other programs which don't specifically support GPU processing.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Find Function in MS Word 13

2018-05-29 Thread Rebecca Lineberger
Well, LOL, I can certainly empathize. I was playing with the find command
in my Word 2010, finding partial words and reacquainting myself about how to
find formatting.
Sometimes it worked beautifully, just as Adrian said. And then, for no
reason known to a mere mortal, as opposed to the more highly evolved
computer being on this desk, the find could not be found. Gone.
And sometimes, it found 18 paragraph marks when I'd only put in five. Maybe
it was trying to apologize for earlier disappearances.

Hi, Jerry.

Dave and Rebecca have posted the JAWS alternative that works fine in most
instances. However, the MS find function can be helpful in other ways, so
I'd like to try to suggest what may be going wrong for you.

With JAWS find (JAWS key+control+f), you can only search for whole words. So
if you remembered the word you wanted was a verb such as "talk," but not
whether it was talked, talking, etc., you'd have to search over and over
until you landed on the place you were searching for. MS find isn't limited
to words; you can also search for partial words, etc.

Another nice feature of the MS search function is that it will tell you how
many instances of your search string appear in the document, and also which
one you're focused on. JAWS find does none of that.

Finally, with MS find you can search for paragraph breaks, tabs and other
useful targets. Again, you can't do any of this with JAWS find.

In my experience, the first time I open an MS find, nothing happens. I press
control-f, type in my search string, then press enter. Nothing. However, I
then press control-f again and JAWS verbalizes the search string I just
typed. Now I press enter, and I'm taken to the first instance of that
string.

Here, take care to listen on pressing that enter key. You will be given the
context, such as the entire line where the result appears. You'll also be
told to click on "Next" for the next instance. If you've arrived where you
want to be, press escape to exit the find function. If you're looking for a
different instance, press the spacebar.

If you move on to the next instance, you're now told the number of examples
of this string in the document and which of those instances you're focused
on, as well as the current context.

The MS find function isn't completely consistent. For example, sometimes it
commences a search the first time I do the find command, sometimes not. It
took me some getting used to, and like Rebecca and Dave, I most often use
JAWS find. but learning how to work with MS find was well worth the trouble.

How do I enable or disable fast startup?

Fast startup is a feature in Windows that helps your computer start faster.
You can use the following steps to enable or disable fast startup.
1. Type Control Panel in the search box.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Click Power Options.
4. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
5. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
6. Tab down to Shutdown settings and uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Howdy Jerry,

Do you have Fast Start enabled? If this is enabled then when you shut your
computer down it doesn't really shut down, but it goes into a hibernated
state that allows the computer to wake-up & install updates, run security
scans, & whatever the Widows 10 system is supposed to do in this state.
These tasks are all scheduled and designed to do their thing when your
computer is not being used. But, if Fast Start is disabled it can't do
these scheduled tasks. So, in your case if Fast Start is not turned on in
can't wake-up to install the updates and you would have to do them manually.
If you have Fast Start enabled and the updates aren't being installed there
might be an error code message somewhere which explains why. if you do a
search using the error code number as your search criteria.

Use hardware acceleration when available Alt+Shift+r

Can anyone give me a refresher and what these three settings actually do?

I have a curious problem regarding MS Word 2013. For some strange reason, I
cannot seem to get the Control F (find) function to work. I can go through the
ribbons and get to the function that way, but it will not work either. Has
anyone ever come across this problem as well, and if so, what was the remedy?
Using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. Thanks in advance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Deleting and renaming folders

2018-05-29 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Fred,
First of all it does not matter what internet browser you are using as to
what you want to do in Outlook 2010.
Now if you want to delete a folder first go to your inbox. Now do a shift +
tab to get to your folder list. Now arrow up or down until you hear the
folder you want to delete or rename. Now press the application key and I
menu will come up. Now arrow down to either rename or delete the folder you
want by pressing enter on what you want done in the menu.
Hope this helps.
Mr. Ed

I am using W-10, latest jaws,
outlook 2010 and chrome
browser and I am having
problems deleteing and
renaming folders in outlook
2010. I have done this many
times before without problems
but something must have
changed or my memory has
failed me. I was using IE 11
browser before though and that
might be the problem. I would
appreciate any help on this
very much.

[JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings

2018-05-29 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I was poking around Firefox after reupgrading to V 60.0.1 and going through
the various settings to make sure everything is how I want it and came
across the below:

Use hardware acceleration when available Alt+Shift+r

 Use autoscrolling Alt+Shift+a

 Use smooth scrolling Alt+Shift+m

So, since I rarely ever deal with these particular settings, I forgot what
is advised. Whether to check or uncheck these three options? On the latest
Jaws 2018 May update and it is much better than the first go around with
Firefox 60.

Can anyone give me a refresher and what these three settings actually do?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

I find that the JAWS find command works much better in Word.
Insert-control-f
Insert f3 for find again.
JAWS goes right to the search string without having to close an edit box.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Some PDFs do not read properly

2018-05-29 Thread Jim Pursley
I occasionally experience the run on word issue you seem to be
describing.  It clears up when you change the reading format to the read
from the raw print stream option.  Control shift 5 gets you the reading
format list.  Arrow where you want to go.   Tagged readin format
sometimes does not behave properly either.

2018-05-29 Thread Adrian Spratt
John,

This may not assist you directly, but lately when I've encountered this
problem, I've found that the JAWS convenient OCR feature reproduces the text
with the spaces between words intact. I don't recall if JAWS convenient OCR was
included with JAWS 16. If it was, you might try it and compare results.
Keystrokes: JAWS key+spacebar, then separately o for OCR , then d for document.
The process can be slow. The results will be displayed in a separate window.

The browser makes no difference to how Outlook 2010 operates. Can you post the
method you're using for deleting and renaming folders? Then people could chime
in with suggestions for what might have gone wrong.
