Hello all.
I will publicly state why I am refusing to use JAWS. It is Freedom
Scientific's attitude towards pricing and their license schemes. Some of
us can't or won't afford to buy JAWS, especially if the free one is just
as good as JAWS. As for the license scheme, the user is punished to
license JAWS on up to three machines. With the free and even other
commercial screen readers one can install on as many computers as they
have so long as one machine is used at a time, no questions asked. With
JAWS, once all three authorizations have been used they would then have
to request FS for more keys. Eventually and I will say eventually they
will refuse flat and get paranoid about people sharing authorization
keys. I understand piracy and all that and I certainly don't commit to
any of that stuff however at the same time FS is just asking for money
and not caring about the customer. True there is a dongle option, but
even they can have their fair share of problems. Now for the technical,
I do find the free one to be actually more stable and even works with
more applications than JAWS. You may find this shocking but this is true
according to my personal experience.
Take care.

and when it happened did it refuse to load despite closing the
offending program and accepting the strange error message that
appears? I get this on my Windows 7 machine sometimes. The only
workaround is to log out and log back in to restore JAWS functionality.
I hope FS are aware of it. If not I will certainly let my dealer Sight
and Sound know.
From Chris.

All Jaws users ,
I am having a major problem with Jaws reading properly. Jaws is not
reading email messages once I enter into them through outlook express; I am
also noticing a problem on the internet when I go to homepage (Google) it
lands in the edit field and forms mode refuses to turn off using my escape
key and or the pc cursor. I also notice that on facebook it starts reading
everything at once when before it read line by line. I am able to tab to
different links on Google but unable to scroll down the page. this only
started happening after I sat a notebook accidentally on my number pad. I
have tried to look at the verbocity settings to see if something got changed

there I changed a couple of things but nothing seemed to help. I also
noticed that when the notebook was sat on the number pad it said PC cursor
off and something about the virtual cursor. I hope I have provided enough
information to diagnose this problem I am using JAWS 10 with XP operating
system on a Dell inspiron 1545 laptop with a Lunovo external number pad.
Please if anyone knows how to turn the PC cursor back on ( usually when I
push the PC cursor it says PC cursor and returns from JAWS cursor this is
not happening) or you may know how to correct this problem respond any help

Yes, maybe so but that is not why it is not working for him. I use 10 with

jaws is 32 bit.
That is why it tells him it won't run.

A jumplist allows you to view recent web pages or documents or perform
another task on a specific application that supports jumplists. To
access them, right click the program on the taskbar (the applications
key performs a right click), and you will see a list of options. This is
a jumplist associated with that application. So, for example, right
clicking Internet Explorer will show you recently viewed websites, and
other options. Hope this helps.

Hi Hannah,

This issue of authorization popping up in Windows 7 is resolved, once
and for all, in an update to JAWS 11 that is scheduled to release no
later than next Monday. Actually, I have some insider info that suggests
it should be public by noon on Thursday this week. You will also find 4
new Research It items in this update. Business Search, Area Code look
up, Currency Converter, and Fed-X package tracking.

Regards,
Eric

The way it works, is that whoever is the Controller (Get Access to a
Computer), must be a properly authorized license and you must be using a
version that is as high or higher than the version of JAWS being used on the
Target machine (Allow Access to my Computer). So if you are using version
10, you could not be the Controller in a Tandem session with a user who is
running JAWS 11.

The Target user can be using a proper license or in this case, could also be
running in 40 Minute Demo mode. The Tandem session will expire when the 40
minutes expires of course. The Controller machine may not be a 40 Minute
Demo.

In the case described as a major problem by the user on the list, there is
something else going on which we will be happy to discuss with him when he
contacts us. There really is not a problem at all.

Kind regards,
Eric

Research is great. However, the key press combination to launch it (inser
spaceBar r) is tricky for me. Seems you have to press it exactly right or

you will get either Jaws restriction message, or nothing at all. I have
not mastered a solution where it works correctly when pressed every time.
Also I wanted to get the NFL scores for a specific week so I typed the
phrase for example week 9or week 10 but NFL scores seems to always bring
up the upcoming schedule for the current week. Has anybody else experie
nced issues like this using research it?

Hi Ryan:

I installed norton 2010 on a friend's computer and it is running quite
nicely. However, you need a sighted person to help do the installation and
to turn off Identity safe, which will pop up when you go on the net. This
Identity safe is not accessible.

I do not know if anything in Norton 2010 is accessible or not. She has no
problems with it, she just lets it do it's thing.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 Update Posted 11-24-09

Hello all,

We have released the update this afternoon. You should be able to locate
it now if you use Check for Updates. Here is what it includes:

Enhancements in JAWS 11.0.746 (November 2009)

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final
JAWS 11.0.734 release and the JAWS 11.0.746 posting. All enhancements
since the initial public beta release are included in this release.

* This release resolves an issue with new Windows 7 installations
where JAWS would request that you install the mirror driver after using
applications such as iTunes 9.0.2 or Roxio Creator 2010. This has now
been resolved for JAWS 11. If you experience this issue with JAWS 10 or
MAGic 11 with Windows 7, download the 64- or 32-bit Video Intercept
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-whats-new.asp#Vide
oIntercept as described earlier on this page.

The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It
feature. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the
INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

* Amazon Product Search: Displays search results from
Amazon.com(r) for the word or item entered in the edit field. Results
appear as links followed by price and shipping information.
* Bookshare(tm) Book Search: Displays search results from
Bookshare.org based on an author's name, a book's ISBN number, or words
found in a book title or book description. If a match is found, the
result appears as a link containing the author, title, and copyright
date.
* Health Search on WebMD: Provides search results from the Web
site WebMD(r) for the words entered in the lookup edit field or located
at the current cursor position in a document or Web page. If a match is
found, results appear as links followed by a brief synopsis.
* Stock Quotes: Displays current and up to 52-week historical
financial information for the stock symbol entered in the edit field or
selected from a document, spreadsheet, or Web page.
* Time Search: Displays the current time and time zone for any
location typed into the edit field. Note: Be specific when entering a
location since one name may represent multiple cities. For example, if
you only type London into the edit field, you will receive time results
for London, England, U.K., London, Ontario, Canada, and London,
Arkansas, U.S.A.
* UPS Tracking: Returns progress and delivery status information
for a valid UPS(tm) tracking number.
* People Search: Allows you to search for individuals using their
first and last name, street name (optional), and location. Use
semicolons to separate search terms, for example, John Smith; Main
Street; St. Petersburg, Florida. Always use a comma to separate the city
and state or province location. Note: Currently, the results that appear
in the Virtual Viewer are limited to the first 10 items provided by the
Web site 411.com. This site only displays 10 items per page. If the
individual does not appear in your initial search results, try refining
your search input by including a street name.

Hi List,

Just to clarify, if you have downloaded and installed the JAWS 11 prior to
October 23rd at 2:30 PM EST, then you can check for updates in the Help
Menu now, and you can get this update in that fashion. If you're not sure
you need it, you can just verify the version of JAWS you have installed
now in the about box, from the Help menu also.

The current relase with the security update included, is 11.0.734 which is
also the only version available on the Download page now. So, if you
install from the web today for the first time, you are all set. Also, I
wanted to let you all know that the DVD that is going to be shipping has
been delayed a few days to make certain it contains this newer build which
contains the Security update. The SMA shipments will start to go out by
Thursday, October 29 once they clear our testing lab and complete the
production process. So anyone who is installing from the DVD on 32 bit or
64 bit Windows should continue to check for updates as always, but I
wanted to be clear that the security update is already included on your
DVD.

If you go to the Help menu of JAWS and hit enter, you then down-arrow to,
Check for Updates and hit enter. You then hit the spacebar on the item
which will probably be at the top and says security update for JAWS
11.0.734. After you check it, you have to tab over to ok and hit the
spacebar. It will then start to download update with the clicking sound.
You will have two more OK buttons, the last one being to restart your
computer.

Totally agree. XP was much easier to use and many more useful features
than vista. Also note if you have some older scanners software etc there
may not be aa driver upgrade. This happened to me with a perfectly good 4
year old HP scanner, which was not supported for vista by HP. I suspect
this may happen with 7.1 as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws script;

2009-05-02 Thread Hannah Day
Yes, the script's built into JAWS 9 and above, and you just simulate a left
mouse click when the balloon appears. This will work regardless of where the
JAWS cursor is.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws script;

Good morning;

I have a jaws script question for a friend.

he asked me;
if the Help Balloon Script, will work in jaws10?
on the script page,
http://www.jaws-users.com/scripts/JAWS/HelpBalloonScript.html

it says;
instructions for installing and getting the help balloon script to work.
this script will make it possible to click help balloons wit one keystroke
in versions of jaws prior to jaws nine. would I be correct in assuming
that, jaws9/jaws10 has the script already built in to the program?

if so, does one need to assign a keystroke to the script?

in advance thanks for the help.

Just a note to all that I am aware of list messages taking an extra long
time to be delivered. This is on the server side and as such beyond my
control. My understanding is that the matter is being checked out and
hopefully be resolved in a few days. During this time there might be an
interruption in service for a few hours before things return to normal,
most likely on Wednesday from what I hear. If that happens don't panic
because it will be only temporary.

poasting regarding my problems with jaws. I firstly uninstalled and
reinstalled jaws. then it seemed to be ok. Then i thought i would try
internet explorer to see if it recktified the problem or not. Well it looks
like there is a conflicktion cause jaws crashed and reverted how it was
before i uninstalled it.So i conclude it's a problem with the jaws
intersepter and windows internet explorer. so once again i've had to
reinstall again for the seckond time of the day lol!

Has anyone experienced this regards hannah --

If you have xp you have to put up with Sam.

As for now so do I.

But, vista has more then one voice.

  Hi Devona,

It comes in handy in a pinch. Like if I am having a problem with Jaws.
would you happen to have directions on how to change Sam's voice to a
 better
one that you are willing to share? If you do, I and many others would
 truly
appreciate it. Thank you very much. Mike

Hi Jitendra,

All the voices work except Microsoft Sam. This is the message I get
 when
  I
arrow to MS Sam below. The voices that are there are SAPI voices.

Speech Properties
This voice cannot be played. Please try selecting another voice or
selecting a different audio output device.
OK

Thanks much. Mike

Hello, try running narrator while another screen-reader like jaws is
running, and tell the error comes.
another thing to be noted: narrator has only 2 files: narrator.exe and
narhook.dll so no easy chance to corruption, so go into your speech
settings in ctrl panel,
on the text-to-speech page, see if the voices installed are speaking or
not, when you arrow up or down to select one,
if not, talk back to me.
Thank you, Jitendra.

wow that takes me back in time...
the best Jaws version for that program was 3.7U.
Maybe try one of those other chat text sites um I'm trying to remember
 what
they are called it's been few years since I used them, but there was that
guy Jim Grimsby or something to that who wrote scripts for the place I'm
 um
referring to but can't think of...
I know this for a fact because I had him in my windows messenger back
 when
 I
use to use it and he wrote scripts for me to use that place, oh gosh I
 can't
remember what it's called now. I know it's not the GMUD but it's kind of
like that but no games just chatting and lots of rooms.
He use to have these scripts up on the old jfwlite site...

 Hi there listers.
I know this is probably and old program that none of you even use but
 here
 is my question.
My problem is this. When using ms chat 2.5, after a while of text is on
the screen, jaws will read a part of a sentence from other text before
getting to the actual text at hand.
 What I mean is this.
 Let's say you write something like;
Christy says hi and the sentence previous to that says nothing much it
 will say:
 nothing much. Christy says hi.
Can I get a setting in either ms chat or jaws to not read prior parts of
sentences before the current one has been written?
 Thanks for any help..
 I am using jaws 09
 I mean 9.

 Hi all.
 I am wondering this.
Is there any mud clients that work with jfw well?
I know Monky term works fine.
But firstly I can't find it.
So can anyone tell me which mud client works well with jaws without
 setting up scripts?
 Also:
 I am having a problem.
I have used gmud32 on this machine.
 And I've unchecked everything.
But it still speaks words when I am typing with it.
How do I turn that all off if any?
 Thanks.
I've tried to uncheck echo... but still no luck.

all. I have seen messages about AVG from
time to time on this list. I have used
Norton since 2003, and am now on Norton 360. I
have been told by a number of people that
Norton slows down a PC and is not necessarily
the best, although it is the one most computer

looked at AVG's site, and see that there is a
free version and one for which you have to

the paid version the one to go for. It is
reasonably priced, so that is not a

[JAWS-Users] Re-joined

2007-06-07 Thread Hannah Day
Hi all I had to re-join this list on a new e-mail address as my old
address kept bouncing e-mails, so hope this new one works. I'm using
JAWS 8.0.423 demo by the way on a Windows XP Home SP2 laptop. Thanks!
