Re: [JAWS-Users] Templates in Excel 13

2017-10-08 Thread Rick Ely
Brian and Jerry,
This may be partly my fault. A while back I suggested that Jerry look on
line for an address book template and suggested a web site. Jerry, if you
did that and downloaded one from the web, it might not show up in the
approaches that Mike suggested, but he would likely know if there is an
Excel file in the download folder, would excel find it? I am just not sure.

Hello Jerry,

When in the Excel worksheet press Alt F followed by the letter N.
If you tab one time you will find an edit box for searching online for a
template. If that is what you want to do then type in your search term, tab
one time to the search button and press spacebar.
If you want to find a template already on your computer then tab past the
edit box for searching online and the Search button.
As you continue tabbing you get links to the various template categories.
Each category is announced as a link. Press enter on the category you want.
For example, one of the categories is the Personal category. Press enter on
that link to show your personal templates.
After pressing enter key on the category you want start tabbing again and
this time tab one time past the link for the category you chose.
If you chose personal templates the Focus should be in the list of your
personal templates. They are announced as links but you can use your arrow
keys to move between your templates in the chosen category and press enter
key on the one on which you want to base your new file.

In an opened Excel file you can use CTRL F to bring up the dialog box in
which you can type your search term for the worksheet. After typing in your
search criteria you can tab to a "Find All" button and use spacebar to have
all the results listed. Using up and down arrow keys in the list of results
will have the result read along with the cell reference for the result. You
can press enter key to move to the specific result or escape to dismiss the
dialog box.

Take care.

Jerry,
What about starting with a predesigned template for an address book in
Excel? The link below is to a page with a variety of template choices and
they are free. Even if you find one that needs tweaking for your use, you

Here is an option to create a new folder in your inbox. First use shift + F6
to bring up the list of folders. Navigate to the inbox. Next press the

You will land in the edit field for that new folder. Type in the folder name
and then press the tab key. This will move you back to the folder list. You
should be sitting on the newly created and named folder.

[JAWS-Users] Suggestions for software needed

2017-09-09 Thread Rick Ely
Morning,

I am wondering if any of you have suggestions to make about JAWS accessible
software for two areas? First is a good basic money management program. For
years I used Quicken but as new version have emerged, they have become
increasingly cumbersome to use with screen readers. I would like bank and
credit card account access if at all possible. If any of you have a step by
step guide for Quicken 2016 or later, that too might solve my problems.

The other area is managing a collection of DVD and Blu Ray disks. I have
looked at lots of options with free trials, but again, most have offered, at
best, poor access.

Thanks for any guidance,

Rick

P.S. I too have been in list unwilling withdrawal for much of the week. Went
back and reactivated my membership and I am getting feeds again. Not sure if
it was that or the end of the message doubt that others have mentioned.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and volume

2017-08-18 Thread Rick Ely
Morne,
Posted this a while back . Hope it works for you.
Rick

In the system tray go to speakers and use the context key to open the menu
of choices.
Select Volume mixer Note Simply pressing enter will get you volume mixer,
however activating it with the enter key will not show sliders for JAWS or
system sounds.

When opened, you can tab between the sliders as you might move your hands on
a physical mixing board.
The first slider is labeled Speaker volume and JAWS focus will be on the
title of that slider.
Tab again and Jaws says Up, Down slider and speaks the percentage of volume
as it is currently set. NOTE focus on all other sliders will announce the
item that the slider will adjust. For example "Up Down slider for system
sounds ".
The up and down arrow keys will adjust the slider and JAWS speaks the
percentage of volume.
Tab again and you will land on the Mute button for that item. For example,
Mute System sounds. Spacebar toggles between mute and unmute There should
be a separate slider for system sounds and for JAWS . If other audio
features are enabled you will find sliders for these as well.
Escape leaves the Mixer but setting are automatically save.

Latest versions of both Windows 10 and Jaws.

I would like to change the volume of JAWS without changing the overall
volume of my computer. Is there a way to do it?

Your help is much appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] controlling only jaws volume

2017-08-14 Thread Rick Ely
Evening,
I am running Windows 10 Creators and JAWS 18. I quickly tried this and it
worked here.

In the system tray go to speakers and use the context key to open the menu
of choices
Select Volume mixer
Note Simply pressing enter will get you volume mixer, however activating it
with the enter key will not show sliders for JAWS or system sounds.
Spacebar toggles between mute and unmute
There should be a separate slider for system sounds and for JAWS . If other
audio features are enabled you will find sliders for these as well.
Escape leaves the Mixer but setting are automatically save.

Hi Ted,

Your best bet, & the only 1 I know of is to run 2 soundcards. 1 for Jaws &
1 for system sounds. I go 1 step further & also run 2 sets of speakers as
well. Running 2 soundcards & 2 sets of speakers gives you total control of
both. You can adjust volume on the fly for either 1, & man oh man, can that
come in handy!
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Dear List:

How do I permanently control only the jaws volume, but leave the volume at
100 percent for all other applications? How do I get to the right place to
make the adjustment? I can change the speaker volume for the entire
computer, but, I really only want to change the volume for jaws. I found
other voice setting changes within the startup wizard and also in the jaws
screen, but could find no volume adjustment. Thanks. Regards: Ted Larson

On moving from link to link, try tabbing. With JAWS, "l" moves from list to
list.
I'm confused by your second question. If it's about how to get JAWS to start
reading an email or document, the "say all" command is JAWS key+2 on the
numpad. With email, I'll add that I typically press control-home to stop
gratuitous speech and locate the top before starting "say all."
If you're asking about moving page by page, I know of no way of doing so
through an email message. I'm a little surprised it would come up. But in
Word, I believe the keystroke is control-pagedown. I say I "believe" because
I haven't found it reliable.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and link shortcut and continious reading for
emails and word or text documents.

Hi all,
Well I started using Jaws regularly last week and find it fairly easy to
figure out. But the help I have received from this list has been greatly
appreciated.

I am using windows ten the most current version of jaws on a 64 bit all in
one computer.

The problem I am having is there a shortcut for moving from link to link
without having to use the arrow keys.
I know for headers I just push the letter H and I move from header to
header. So I assumed the letter L would do the same thing moving from link
to link. If someone can tell me what need to do for moving from link to
link it would be greatly appreciated.
The other minor issue is when I open an email using Outlook 2016 I used to
just push the down arrow at the top of the document and it would read the
email This also is a problem with word and text documents.
So basically I am wondering how to make emails and documents read a page at
a time.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Dave

Re: [JAWS-Users] Quick Navigation Keys Vanished!

2017-07-29 Thread Rick Ely
I had done that but I did not think of using the spacebar on the option. WE
did not make as frequent use of the spacebar for options as does JAWS. I
know I pressed Enter on the option, but of course, nothing happened. Glad
you pointed that out for browser use. It feels as though I have learned a
lot of the differences between We and JAWS in a short time. This has been
the only one that was a major stumper.

The list is great as it has so many longtime Jaws users who are experienced
and willing to share knowledge.

[JAWS-Users] Quick Navigation Keys Vanished!

2017-07-26 Thread Rick Ely
Afternoon,
I am using Windows 10 all updates, JAWS 18 all updates and the most recent
Firefox. Something I did made all of the quick navigation keys vanish. I
have looked all through the JAWS options thinking that somewhere along the
way I must have turned them off.

I am a relatively new user having switched from WindowEyes, so I went to the
article on browsing for folks moving to JAWS from WE. So much is similar
between the two that switching was easy. Any ideas of how I went down this
path and how to find my way again would be appreciated.
Thank ahead,
Rick

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws still disappearing

2017-07-19 Thread Rick Ely
Hi All,
Please remember that simply because we are running the same Windows version,
the same JAWS version and the same application does not mean that our
computers are in any way identical. Over time, all kinds of junk can get
installed that we are not aware of, lots of pieces of applications run in the
background and unless we look at those, we don't know they are running. All of
that makes it a challenge for tech support staff to figure out solutions. Lots
of us have commented on JAWS going silent, most of us have stated what we have
had to do to get the little guy talking again. Jim's statement was not meant
to say that others of us were crazy or incompetent. His report was just one
more bit of evidence for the Freedom sleuths to use to correct the issue.

of us do on this list. This way we all know what is happening on different
machines. No, no issues using Internet Explorer at all on my machine. Sorry if

Just to add to this, I have the same issue with Jaws 16 through 18 on a Win
7 Ultimate system.

It invariably seems to correlate to the use of IE 11. It is not duplicatable,
but it does happen with enough consistency that there's got to be a bug
somewhere in the program.

When it happens, if I can get Jaws to stumble-and-bumble to the process
manager, I can close IE and reload Jaws. Oftentimes, Jaws is so sluggish i.e.
not quite non-responsive -- that I end up loading System Access to go and
close IE11 and Jaws. Then, I can re-load Jaws and its happy.

If I use a competitive screen-reader, I've not encountered these issues.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws still disappearing

2017-07-18 Thread Rick Ely
Let me add:
Running Windows 10 64 bit with all updates, JAWS 18 most recent update,
Outlook 16 365, the vanishing JAWS happens most often when I leave spell
check running in a message. Often ,if I use Windows Key + D to return to the
desktop and wait patiently voice will return. Interestingly enough while
writing this note with ZoomText Fusion newest version with JAWS as the
underlying screen reader, the same thing just happened though the spell
checker was not in use, and the same solution worked. Now when I arrow about
or type a word, there is an inconsistent lag between action and echoed speech.

Does anyone know if VFO or Freedom monitors this list for issues encountered
specific to JAWS and common among numbers of users?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Pinning and unpinning items from the taskbar in W-10.

2017-07-17 Thread Rick Ely
Jim,
What a great step by step. I have a folder with your lessons. It is so good
to see someone with a clear understanding of Windows. When, in the long ago
and far away, and teaching WindowEyes I told my students that so much of
good use of a screen reader relied on knowing what was possible in the
operating system and having a good group of shortcut keys in your OS between
your ears. I was a GW guy back in the VocalEyes days and then a WE user and
teacher. When WE went away, I dreaded the switch. All that dread has mostly
vanished. Now if I can retrain my head to press the specific JAWS function
keys. I will be in good shape. Motor memory is a wonderful thing until the
task has its key combo altered.

Thanks from lots of us,
Rick

Pinning and unpinning items from the taskbar in W-10.
OK, first of all, What Items are pinned to my Taskbar?
Second of all, What are the order of the pinned items on my Taskbar?
Third of all, Why does the pinned order of items on the Taskbar matter?
Fourth of all, How do I unpin items from the Taskbar?
Fifth of all, How do I pin items to the Taskbar?
**What Items are pinned to my Taskbar?
After pressing Windows key+T, and pressing the Right arrow key, I will hear
the following Items.
Task bar Internet Explorer Button
Word 2016 Button
Notepad - 1 running window button menu
Outlook 2016 Button
Control Panel Button
Windows Defender Security Center Button
iTunes Button
JAWS 18 Button
**What are the order of the pinned items on my Taskbar?
1. Internet Explorer
2. Word 2016
3. Notepad
4. Outlook 2016
5. Control Panel
6. Windows Defender Security Center
7. iTunes
8. JAWS 18
**Why does the pinned order of items on the Taskbar matter?
Because, depending on the order of the pinned items to the Taskbar, this
will determine the shortcut key that will start that program on your
computer.
*For example:
on my computer pressing the windows key followed by a number on the numbers
row, will start the following program or open the item pinned to the
Taskbar.
Pressing Windows key+1, will open Internet Explorer.
Pressing Windows key+2, will open Word 2016.
Pressing Windows key+3, will open an untitled Notepad file.
Pressing Windows key+4, will open Outlook 2016.
Pressing Windows key+5, will open the control panel.
Pressing Windows key+6, will open Windows Defender Security Center.
Pressing Windows key+7, will open iTunes.
Pressing Windows key+8, will always start Jaws 18.
*Tip, if you have more than one of these windows open.
Pressing their windows key+number, will take you to that program.
*For example:
If you are in the Internet Explorer window, and you wish to go back to your
open notepad file, just press Windows key+3, on my computer.
If you wish to start a new notepad file, Press Windows+shift+3, this will
open a blank notepad file.
So as you can see this is a quick and fast way, to start your favorites
programs on your W-10 computer including Jaws.
**How do I unpin items from the Taskbar?
As you are busy customizing your new W-10 computer, you should clear the
pinned items off your Taskbar.
This way you can start from scratch, pinning your pinned items to the
Taskbar in your own order.
*Press Windows key+T, you land on the first item pinned to your Taskbar.
Press the Applications key, up arrow to, unpin from Taskbar, press Enter.
Press Windows key+m or D, go to your desktop.
Press Windows key+T, returns you to the Taskbar, repeat the above directions
until the Taskbar is empty.
Keep repeating these steps, until all the current items are unpinned from
your Taskbar.
**How do I pin items to the Taskbar?
OK, let us start with pinning Jaws to the Taskbar.
Press the Windows key, followed by the down arrow key, you will land in the
All Apps list box.
Press the letter J, you will land on JAWS 18.0 folder, Collapsed.
Press the Enter key to expand Jaws 18.
Highlight Jaws 18.
Press the Applications key, down arrow to, more sub menu, Right arrow to pin
to taskbar, press Enter.
You now have Jaws 18 pinned to the Taskbar.
*Tip, remember if you have more than one version of Jaws installed on your
computer, do the following.
After pressing Windows key, and pressing the down arrow, and pressing the
letter J, you will land on the oldest version of Jaws first.
So just repeat the above steps for pinning all the versions of Jaws to the
Taskbar, that are installed on your computer.
I always use this method for starting Jaws on my computer, instead of the
old way of pressing Control+ALT+J, to start Jaws.
So because Jaws 18 is the eighth item pinned to the Taskbar, pressing
Windows key+8, always starts Jaws 18 on my computer.
*How to find items like Internet explorer or notepad, to pin to my Taskbar?
Press Windows key, followed by the Down arrow,

Try one method for creating links and another for clicking on links, as
follows:

When adding a link to a message, be sure to press the return key right after
the link's last character. I believe Miriam made this suggestion yesterday,
and I've been doing it for a long time. Links are not shown as links without
the return character at the end.

When trying to open a link, right-arrow over the link's first character

Hi Tom, have you tried opening other e-mails that you use to with links to
see if they still work?
Seeing your mails still display in HTML format, we should start trying a
step-by-step to see where the issue lies.

Tom,
Here is how to check on the format that your Outlook is using when creating
email and how to change it if you want. I believe it also changes how
incoming messages are displayed, but I can't confirm that.
In outlook go to the File menu by pressing Alt _+ f.
Arrow down to options and press Enter.
Arrow down to Mail and press tab
Arrow Down once and you will find a combo box that displays what format
Outlook is currently using to compose messages.
Arrow down in the combo box and three buttons will be available. They are

long list of options. You can tab through all of these to get to the OK
button. However, from where you are it is easier to go backwards through the
items. Hold down your shift key and press tab until you hear OK. Release the
shift key and press enter on that OK button. If you feel like you made a
mistake in this menu, worry not. Hit the Escape key and the menu will vanish
and no changes will be made. You will just have to start over.
Note, my setting here was Rich Text and I had no issues with activating an
HTML that was part of a message I was reading. In terms of inserting an HTML
link, I usually just cut and paste these, but they do appear as active
links to me and to the reader on the receiving end. so I can't confirm the
typing method you described. Let us know if that works for you and which
text option you selected.

Re: [JAWS-Users] starting jaws manually

2017-07-03 Thread Rick Ely
Morning,
I use JAWS 18, Jaws Fusion and NVDA. I have created desktop shortcuts for
each of these and given them names proceeded by a number, for example 2 JAWS
and 3 Fusion. This makes their startup key easy to find, press 2 JAWS and
enter and I am up and running. Happy to post the process if anyone is
interested. As your WindowEyes is still an option, it could be included as a
shortcut as well. Just remember that you can't run two screen readers at the
same time. That creates the Tower of Babble effect!

Mack,
Press windows D for the desktop command and press J for jaws, when jaws 18
is highlighted press enter, you should hear jaws option submenu O, press
enter or letter O. You should hear, Basic press enter, here you can adjust
jaws , just tab through the menu and set it, if needed use your arrows to
also select an make an adjustment.
It will take time to learn this entire menu plus the voices menu.
