Re: [JAWS-Users] SMA Renewal Question

2016-12-13 Thread Graham Smith
What with accessibility getting better and better with computer operating
systems out of the box and having paid for an SMA for well over ten years now
certainly makes you think.

Through listening to FS Podcasts they seem to be concentrating on hitting
governments, students etc for the bulk of their business.

Jaws has been a great help to me over the years but I really feel I have paid
for it now.

when adding a rule to a smart list.

Using the rating option, any idea how to select the appropriate star rating?
you are simply in an edit box which will not take txt or numbers.

On a Mac this edit box is a combo type box with the star equivalents available
to be chosen.

Are there any decent Podcasts anywhere?

Is there a keystroke to return to desktop?

Any idea how to leave an open message in windows live mail, when I press escape

Make sure you have the other end plugged into a wall outlet, and
 that the
outlet has power -- is it perhaps controlled by a wall switch? If

Jaws will announce blank whenever it encounters a blank line within any
program, be it a word processor or on the internet.

In the settings centre under Custom Punctuation there is an option to silence
it. You have to press on the advanced button to see it. Things are not very
straightforward in here so be careful.

[JAWS-Users] Silencing blank

2014-09-30 Thread Graham Smith

I am having difficulty silencing the word blank in jaws beta 16. Please can
someone remind me how to do this. I am sure I am doing it right but cannot
achieve it. I have an option to apply changes in jaws 15 but no apply
option in jaws 16. I am looking at all this under advanced options in
customise punctuation.

2014-09-30 Thread Graham Smith
Thanks, this is exactly what I am doing but it does not stick and there is
no apply option as in prior versions of jaws. I wonder if anyone else has
been successful in silencing blank with jaws 16?

Hi Graham,

These steps are for Jaws versions prior to Jaws 16 but, give them a try. I
don't have J16 installed so

If you want nothing said instead of blank in all applications try the
following:

1. Open the Settings Center, press, control, shift, + D, to open Settings
Center default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, punctuation closed..., right arrow to open, down arrow to,
customize punctuation, press the spacebar to open. Make sure you
press the spacebar to open not enter. Pressing enter will close the
Settings Center.
3. Tab to the Advanced button press spacebar to open. The first item in
the list will be, blank, so tab 1 time to, edit description button,
press the spacebar to open. The word, blank, will be in this edit field.
Delete the word, blank, put a space with the spacebar, press enter.
4. Tab to okay, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar, tab to
apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your
changes close the Settings Center.

If you don't want this in all applications, open the desired applications
individually use the above steps in each application. HTH
Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Battery Not Charging

2014-07-24 Thread Graham Smith
Thanks David, I have insered and removed the battery many timesto make sure
it is connecting properly but that does not fix it.

I followed your instructions to remove and reinstall software and a dialogue
box tells me that it failed. I have tried several times and keep getting
the same result. when I tryto update software I am told I already have the
latest version.

It is odd that when I replace the battery it does say charging for a few
seconds and then reverts to plugged in not charging.

the battery has hardly been used at all and for 90 percent of its life time,
of about four years, has been out of the laptop, I guess it has just passed
its sale by date, smile.

hello;

I have a question,
how old is the computer?

if the computer is not very old,

2 thoughts come to mind,

1, make sure that the battery is locked firmly into place?
believe it or not? I've actually witnessed this before.
I just unlocked and realease the battery, relocked and bingo, it started
charging.

the second thought is;

Understanding battery charging issues
If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate
that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery
itself
is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become
corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and
reinstall
the power management software by using the Device Manager.

These steps, will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery
listings in Windows
device manager.

In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software,
follow the steps below.
1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device
Manager .
2. Expand the Batteries category.
3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI
Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .
WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other
ACPI compliant driver.
4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .
Alternately, select Action Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers
installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's
power. The
notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.
again, just a couple of thoughts

I just unplug it and let it run off the battery until it is below 90% and

I received a message from Jaws Users that is causing problems in my In Box.
I cannot delete it nor can I read messages that are coming in recently above
it. If I focus on the message and delete it, so I think, a message on one
side of it is deleted but never that bad message. I try to use the JAWS
cursor also, but nothing seems to help.

What can I do to permanently delete this one specific message and get it
out of the way because it is causing major roadblocks for me???

  I use Win 7, JAWS 12 and Outlook 2010.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

[JAWS-Users] jaws and c cleaner

2014-01-27 Thread Graham Smith
Can anyone advise me the best way to go about using c leaner with jaws

I have just downloaded c cleaner and am not really sure about what I am
doing.

My main issue is that when I look at my start up list under msconfig I have
a lot of duplicate stuff there which I was hoping c cleaner would get rid of
but up til now it is all staying there.

For example I have Itunes helper which keeps being added if I uncheck it and
all the adoby programs will do the same and I have various others.

Appreciate any help how I can stop these from showing, I would much prefer a
list of about ten items as opposed to about twenty.

Appreciate any advice.

Hello friends,

When I an on a page on the internet e.g. the Freedomscientific download
page, I press enter to click on a download which is fine.
It then says notification required and you have to do an alt+n to actually
download the file, to save or save as etc.
After you have done this, the download starts but the focus doesn't seem to
go back to the web page that you were on and to the link that you were
using.
You have to alt+tab out of internet explorer then alt+tab bvack in and tab
around to find your last location.
Is tis something that users have come across and has anyone managed to find
a work around or a better way of doing things please?

Steve.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer 9 And Above And Jaws

Hello friends,

When I an on a page on the internet e.g. the Freedomscientific download
page, I press enter to click on a download which is fine.
It then says notification required and you have to do an alt+n to actually
download the file, to save or save as etc.
After you have done this, the download starts but the focus doesn't seem to
go back to the web page that you were on and to the link that you were
using.
You have to alt+tab out of internet explorer then alt+tab bvack in and tab
around to find your last location.
Is tis something that users have come across and has anyone managed to find
a work around or a better way of doing things please?

Steve.

Hello,
Thunderbird is the e-mail client that I use. It can do all of what you
need. I have never liked WLM because you have to label the graphics to
know whether a message is unread or even if the message has an attachment.

Windows 7 took away Outlook Express email client, so I am looking for a
suitable replacement. I haven't found one yet. Here are my requirements.
The

email client should be able to do the following:
Ability to import DBX files
Ability to show the entire message title when reading down through the
messages in the InBox (Microsoft Outlook does not do this)
Ability to tell me the status of sending and receiving. For example,
Outlook

Express will say Sending message 1 of 2 or receiving message 1 of 12. I
can even tab over and view how many kb in total need to be received and
sent.
Ability to work with identities or, at the least, have separate inboxes
Preferrably be a small program low on fluff (like Outlook Express).
Accessible with Jaws screen reader (of course)
Any suggestions are appreciated.

God bless and merry Christmas,

Andrew Bontrager

2013-12-18 Thread Graham Smith
I remember trying both and finding wlm much better accessibly, thunderbird
had to much stuff being read out, things being announced twice, graphics
announcements and just generally clumbersome.

It was a while ago now that I tried both but for me moving on from outlook
express it was the best program, having said all that perhaps thunderbird is
ok now.

I am sure it is a personal thing and that you should try both, I did and wlm
came out on top.

Um, it might be you. Remember some of the following notes:

1. You ned to enable the sidebar in iTunes.

2. iTunes is somewhat sluggish. When you do something, it takes a few
seconds to get reflected.

3. You can use the f6 key to get back to the search area in the iTunes
store.

Hi,

the quality of synthetizers produced by Cereproc in Scottland, or by
Iwona in Poland are much-much better than the quality of Nuance's
Vocalizer or Vocalizer Expressive. Both of them are full of errors. The
difference between these two synth famiies is only in the driver which
makes possible a little bit higher responsivity. But the speech database
of these two synth family is the same. We are currently working on the
Hungarian voices to make them usable, because the speech database of
these voices were so full of errors, that sometimes the produced speech
was ununderstandable. For example: if in the text was a copyright sign
the synth read it as training shoe. Simmilar errors can you found in
the English voices, too.
Vocalizer and its Expressive version is much slower than the above
mentioned synthetizers. I use both and I can tell you, that they are
currently the top synthetizers on the market. They are SAPI 5 synths, so
JAWS can use them immediatley after instaling. If you want a speedy and
very-very human sounding voice in your JAWS, you should use them.

Cheers,

[JAWS-Users] Attachment list in word 2010

2013-10-22 Thread Graham Smith

?For a friend using jaws 14, windows 7 and Outlook 2010

She is unable to view her list of attachments.
She shift tabs from within the body message and lands on the list of
attached attachments but when she arrows up or down to see each one jaws
just loses focus. Jaws is announcing one of three attachments but a sighted
person as well as my blind friend only find 2. Arrowing right and left on
the list seems to do a bit better but all is a bit hit and miss.

Please can anyone advise how we can read this list correctly.

also while using IE10.
Also while using the new F S 3.0, it says “documents”
It would seem like each time a page is reloaded or the focus changes, Jaws

this is driving me crazy...
Of course I do not have far to go...

I am using W7, outlook 2010 and latest jaws, also, IE10 and I would
appreciate any help on removing the bing search as it seems to try to take
over when I do not want it. I would like to know where and how to remove
it as I find it very annoying. I have gone to innernet options and to the
jaws-users home sites several times but I cannot locate it. I will
appreciate any help. Thanks much,

[JAWS-Users] System tray and speaker control

Windows 7, latest jaws on IE10

I notice that when I am in IE 10 and I press insert f11 to open the system
tray to adjust my volumes from the speaker option that jaws will not open
the speaker option but just opens the application key options instead,
anyone else noticed this or is it something unique to me?

Hi Greg,
While in a list view of folders, once you have one selected,
you will need to go to the properties of that folder by doing one of the
following:
Press the applications key, or Shift + F10 or the Alt key, and arrow to,
properties, and press enter.
Now, route Jaws to PC, and arrow up one line at a time until you get the
information you want.

When finished, just press the Escape key to close the properties.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and i tunes 11

yep, I could not find that button either. its quite different now however
and in my opinion much better. You have to select the music link from the
store and then find a browse link and then you will land in a list which you
can start choosing your options by arrowing down and then tabbing on to the
next column for songs artists etc, there are about four or five lists to
make your choices. Did you not see the previous emails describing this very
issue?

You see the songs but the button to hear them is missing or removed has
anyone have any idea where the button went to. I realize below the list are
buttons one and going forward. But it would be a pain to go back and fourth.

Yes, I was sampling songs for about an hour last night.

I use jaws 14 and latest version of itunes 11.

I was using no scripts and was really impressed with the new way of browsing
the store music.

It takes a bit of working outt but once you get it it works really well.

For me there is a lot of use of the f6 and shift f7, tab key and left and
right arrows. Patience is required in letting screens load. So go to the
store select music and then look for the browse link and then start choosing
your options. Remember be patient and and use first letter navigation in the
lists.

No its f6 and shift f6 to move around the screen options.

I have just been on itunes again and gone straight to the book section in
the store. It like the music, worked really well I was listening to clips
from any book any author, etc.

Sorry I am not a good typer but the link to look for is browse. So perhaps
if you click on music and then insert f7 for list of links and find browse,
from here you really have to start looking, the trick is to arrow down
because very often you land in a list without anything being announced but
once you find these lists you can tab and shift tab between them selecting
your options. I believe I heard the word alternative, if you hear this
arrow down, you will get the idea. once you have arrowed to your artist and
then album and then song just hit enter on the song and it will play,
spacebaar to stop it.

When I am not in the store I am using the keystroke control s to find menu
for music, apps, books, store etc, not sure how this will work if it is
removed as has been mentioned.

Well, I tried, guesss you are even more confused now, smile. but seriously
it works far better for me thant the older version of itunes.

good luck

Re: [JAWS-Users] sampling songs with itunes

2012-12-05 Thread Graham Smith

Ok, try this

go to the store
control shift home for store home
insert f7 for list of links
enter on browse

Now when the page opens you will, if your set up is the same and if jaws is
doing the same thing for you, as it is for me, the word: list.

now you are in the columns arrow down to choose your first selection, apps,
books, music, movies etc, now arrow down to music and tab on to the next
column where you can choose from pop, rock blues etc now tab to the next
column and arrow down and choose your next option and again for your next
column option, be sure to be patient some of these searches are taking a
while to come up.

You should be good from here

Hi

Recently my workplace mentioned they were going to move to a new database
software called File Reader Pro and wanted to know what its accessibility
was like and if it would work with my version of jaws. I wasn't sure about
this and did some research on Google where I found that while the makers of
File Reader Pro were touting it was accessible this is not quite the truth
as I discovered from various other web forums etc. Now I would like to know
if someone here has a particular database other than say MS Access or File
Reader Pro that would be pretty good accessibility wise.

Many thanks for any help.

jaws 14. Is there any particular way of doing this or can I just go ahead
and remove them all and then install 14 from my disc? I thought I might
remove all shared files option as well, feel like a fresh start.

Appreciate any advice

[JAWS-Users] backup and restore option

2012-11-23 Thread Graham Smith

I was looking at this last night, I thought I ought to do a backup.

Does this backup option within windows seven take forever or am I doing
something wrong?

I realise the obvious that it depends on whats on the system but I can
assure you I have very little on my laptop compared to most users, no
pictures, music etc.

I was backing up to a cd last night, it was going for anout 2 hours and was
only at 34 percent, does this seem right? I stopped it and went to bed.

Appreciate any help

I have seen this behavior 2 or 3 times using the beta. The Shift + F10
combo would not perform this function at this point either. I had way
too many applications and many IE9 Tabs open at the time. JAWS often
behaves strangely for me when memory gets scarce! I closed many windows
and restarted JAWS. The issue went away. I am not sure whether this is
worth reporting, since many applications, like VMware Workstation and
Excel, act strangely when memory gets scarce. That is why I got 8 GB
of memory when I bought my laptop, so this rarely happens.

Hi Sue

I use jaws 13 with live mail.

when I write an email, I start the way you do,

control N for new email.

then rather than shift tab to get to the contact list, enter the first
letter of the name you want, such as E for elaine. as you are already in the
address field.

then if you shift tab, then tab again, basically you are going back then
forward again to the email address edit field, you will see an address
there. for some reasons jaws doesn't see the address unless you do that.

I think it depends on how you have live mail set up, for example, i've
turned off quite a lot of things within the settings. it makes live mail
more like windows mail. at first I hated live mail but now it's working as
as I like it.

once you have found the email address you wanted, then you can tab over to
the other fields.

personally I wouldn't bother with going to the contact list unless you have
too. this way works for me and I hope it is helpful to you.

if you need any further help, dont hesitate to contact me.

hugs

Elaine

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Thunderbird - am I missing something?

Hi all,

After my recent conversion to Windows 7, I found myself underwhelmed
with Outlook 2010 and decided to make the switch to Thunderbird. Since
every blind person and their brother seemed to be using it, I thought
I'd find it fairly seamless when it comes to accessibility. So far that
has not been the case. I can make use of it reasonably well, in fact I'm
composing this message in it as we speak, but I find the program a lot
less intuitive and a little more sluggish with Jaws than previous
incarnations of Outlook were. Replying to messages is a trial, since
Jaws won't always read me the message I'm typing and will focus on
details like variable width instead. If I press enter to open a
message, there's a good 10-second lag before I can actually start
reading it. This program is eliminated if I view the message using f6
instead of enter, but that really isn't my preference. The list goes on.

Is this just a case of me needing to adjust my expectations, suck it up
and adapt to an unfamiliar program with less convenient hot keys, or is
there some Jaws-related magic bullet I'm overlooking? Is there a script
that one should download for optimal results? A setting or two I should
tweak? Any and all advice welcome.

Best,
Michelle

P.S. If there is a way to redefine the function of certain hot keys, I'd
be beyond happy if someone could enlighten me. :)

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows Live Mail, help, please?

Hi all,
I'm a Windows 7 JAWS 13 user who just installed Windows Live Mail to see if
it were any better or at least better than Thunderbird is right now.
Can we comfortably use this? Should I be able to with my current setup?
Are there scripts I need, certain versions I should be using or settings I

need to change? I can't even find my contact list. I can add people, but
can't find them. I can send and receive mail. Please help? Thanks.
Lisa

Re: [JAWS-Users] take heed: latest update

2012-08-07 Thread Graham Smith

I have a 64 bit windows 7 set up.

I got the notice on turning on this morning, it updated but after pressing
the ok button to restart, it did not. I waited for a good ten minutes
before I rebooted. had no idea if there were any message on the screen.

All seems ok after the manual reboot.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] take heed: latest update

First, a bit of background. I've got 2 computers, one running windows 7
64 bit, the other windows xp service pack 3. Jaws has released build
1106 of 13.0. I got the notification about it when I turned on the
computer running windows 7 64 bit. So I install the update. It installs
with no problem, after which the computer is restarted. Then I get an
error message saying jhook.dll is missing from your computer. So I try
reinstalling the program from the full download. It then tells me that
another version of jaws is installed and to uninstall it. Good thing I
have a demo of Window Eyes on this computer, or I would not have known
what was going on for a while. So I uninstall Jaws, then reinstall it,
and now everything works. Interestingly enough, the 32 bit version did
not have this problem and worked like a champ. Hope this is helpful.

Does anyone have a list of changes in the latest jaws update please? I've
looked on the fs website and they don't seem to have put them up yet.

Cheers

I totally agree with this assessment/thought.
I've never used SAS, I just wanted to give the program a try.
I'm using the latest version of MSE, which is 4.exe, And the latest version
of Malware, Which is; 1.6.exe

Something worth noting:
If you empty your cookies folder, either manually, or by use of third party
software before running any security software, you probably won't get a list
of items to delete.
If you are getting results showing multiple threats, every time you run a
scan, then it is most likely they are cookies., otherwise, you need to
change your internet habits.

Hello Gerald;
As I said,
If you go into the jaws setting center, change the graphic from all to
label, You should be able to see a continue button which you can left click
on.

Your way is great if there's only 3 however, if there's 10? 25?

Okay, it's acturally very simple. If your SAS results page shows that
harmful items have been detected, click on the View Scan Log button. This
will bring up the scan results in Notepad. You can then copy and paste the
file path of each detected item into the Windows Find command to locate it
and delete it manually. Of course, this is not as convenient as clicking on
the check boxes on the results page to select the detected items for
removal, but it is a satisfactory work around. Besides, how often is SAS
going to find malicious items on your computer?

Well I believe I have 852 working properly now.

Must admit wlm is better and is reading from the top of the message, very

On the whole I am pleased with this update but it took a whole lot of
sorting out which should never have been necessary.

Jim, this is Volly Nelson a jaws user. yes your right they should have not
release this latest up date until it worked better. However, I have
learned

that this latest up date has a tendency to crash your computer, so I would
use it until they fix it at freedom scientific.
Thanks!

Ever since I downloaded jaws latest update, my computer has been
extremely

slow,
and I keep having trouble with jaws staying focused. Also, I have had
trouble in
windows outlook, because, I can't back space, when I want to fix an error
in an
email, until I take out jaws and bring it back again. I finally dumped
this latest
update, and went back to the update before this one. Now, my computer
works like it
should, and I can back space in outlook 2007 to correct errors if I need
too. I
think they should have not released this latest update until it worked
better. IMO
anyway. Smile.
