I'm considering asking FS if they would mind placing a download button for
FS cast since I'm the kind of a guy who listens to pod casts at a time of my
own choosing and not really when I fire up my system first thing in the
morning.

Unless Eric reads this himself before I get around to writing that message
at least. What do some of you out there think about that suggestion?

I am using Windows 7 and if I want to adjust the volume I just press the
Windows key and type in Volume. One of the choices is Adjust system volume
and I hit enter on that choice. I then arrow to the volume level I want and
hit enter and it's done. It is much quicker than this description.

Hi Kimber,
You didn't mention which version of Windows you are using, but this works in
Windows 7:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SndVol.exe

Simply copy and paste this into the target field in a new shortcut.
This will open the volume control, and at that point you can simply use the
up and down arrow keys, or the page up and down keys to change the volume
level.
Once you have the volume where you want it, simply alt + F4 to close the
dialogue.
Use caution when assigning a keystroke to your shortcut so that it does not
conflict with a keystroke in another application.
If you need help in creating a shortcut, let us know.

Is it possible to create a shortcut key/key combination to control the

then the volume?

I am very sorry that I have not had the time to record my WLM tutorial yet.
My wife is very sick, and she had to go into the hospital. She is home now,
but we are still catching up on what we could not get done while she was
sick. I will record the tutorial this coming Wednesday (March 16), and I
will send it to David that day. Thank you for being so patient. Note that
the tutorial I have already sent to a lot of you, was recorded by someone
else and the tutorial and the quality of the recording is not that good. I
was just giving you that to help you get you started until I record my

to do in Windows Live Mail, including importing different accounts into it.
Take care, and have a great one.

I realize that any new laptop will have Windows 10 as its operating

My question is this:

What should I be looking for in a laptop? I found the following
system requirements on the Freedom Scientific web site, but wonder

Summary: Software and hardware specifications for JAWS

Description

Specification

JAWS Home Use Edition and JAWS Professional

WindowsR 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows ServerR
2012, and Windows Server 2008

Processor speed

Minimum 1.5 GHz processor

2 GB recommended (32-bit)

Required hard disk space

20 MB to 690 MB required per voice for installing Vocalizer
Expressive, Vocalizer Direct, or RealSpeak Solo Direct voices (file
sizes will vary depending on the voice installed)

Video

A display adapter capable of at least 800 x 600 screen resolution
with 16-bit color (1024 x 768 screen resolution with 32-bit color

Any specific recommendations would be appreciated.

Are there certain brands of laptops I should stay away from? Right

Don't need one. Once you have it connected to USB via the adapter, it can be

There are USB-to-Serial dongles that are pretty reasonable in price. Then
JAWS will recognize the hardware using a serial port number. I have my

In my opinion, the hardware DecTalk was the best speech ever so I am

[JAWS-Users] Problems with Cdex

2016-03-08 Thread ncbootman
I have been using Cdex for some time to convert my cd library into mp3 files
and store a backup on an external drive. Suddenly, it is not working. The
screen is blank as far as Jaws is concerned and only a few letters according to
a sighted person. It is so little information it makes no sense. I am using
Windows 7, Jaws 17, a 64 bit machine, and an external cd drive which has worked
beautifully with this program and still plays any cd accurately. I uninstalled
Cdex and reinstalled it and did not resolve the problem thinking that something
had been corrupted. The install said it was removing previous configuration
files. Does anyone know what is going on and a fix or a different program to
use instead? I like the ease of use with Cdex. But, something is not right now.

Hi Ted,
There is no real reason Adobe needs to be running until you need it.
Some programs run at startup so that they can be updated automatically,
but if a person is mindful of their system updates can be carried out during
scheduled routine maintenance.
On all of my systems, I have only 3 programs loading at startup:
MSE, Jaws and Auto-Sizer.
What programs should be running at startup will vary from system to system.

Well it's not your processor most likely at all. Rather the amount of stuff
that it is forced to process during the average cycle so far as programs
running at startup ETC.

Sadly to my way of thinking that most software venders believe their
products are so important that they should run all of the time instead of
only when needed.

For example I use a program called web drive to send things back and forth
to the server for you folks to download. A very important bit of software to
me but only needed for a few minutes every once in a while. Yet south river
technology thinks it should run all of the time which of course I refuse to
allow. Therefore that saves my system a lot of resources which otherwise
would simply go to waste.

Oh it takes a second or so longer to load when I launch it but I'm OK with
that minor cost of doing business.

I'm wondering if these items are related or not. I mention this since I have
a system here from a guy next door and he says for the past week more or
less processor usage keeps hitting 100% with nothing running.

I have removed a junk yard of temp files and worthless programs off the
system but processor usage still peeks out once in a while. Honestly I have
never seen disk cleanup remove 16.7 GB of for the lack of a better term
trash.

I also removed 39 programs from the system he no longer needs. So any
thoughts on the matter boys and girls.

Hello, again.

As some of you may recall, I have successfully used the free vbersion of
Malwarebytes to get rid of some annoying malware that appeared on my main
home windows 7 computer a few weeks ago.

The free version is apparently about ready to expire, which means I'm going
to have to decide whether to purchase it for more permanent use.

Does anyone know what the purchase price is? Also, if you purchase it for
use on one computer, can you use it on another, or must a separate license
be purchased for each individual computer?

If continuing to use Malwarebytes proves to be too expensive, I may consider
switching to something like adwCleaner.

Thanks for any advice.

Hello Teresa,

If you are referring to working with your Email on charter.net when using
your browser, I have shown a few steps below that might help you. I
generally use Outlook 2010 but I checked out Charter.net recently and
found

it seems to work quite well. Of course, there is a lot more to using the
Email on the site so if I can help you further then feel free to Email
me.
I am using JAWS 12. You might find differences if you are using an
earlier

version of JAWS.

1. Find the log in link. Press JAWS key with f7 to list links and then
press L until you find the log in choice.
2. On the log in page, enter Email for user id and password.
3. After entering password, tab to service zip code and enter it and
then tab to the submit button and press spacebar on it.
4. Use N twice from the top of the resulting page and you will hear
welcome and your name.
5. Use JAWS key with F7 to list links, and press E until you find the
Email choice and press enter key.
6. A new page tab opens that contains the message list.
7. Press X to move to the checkbox just above headers.
8. Press X the second time to move to the first message.
9. Use down arrow to the link under the checkbox, which will be the
subject of the message and press enter key to open it.
10. Use T when message opens to move to the beginning of it. The table
contains header information. Just under the table is where the message
body

starts.
11. Press B to move to the reply, forward and delete buttons.
12. There will be links for show previous message and show next
message. You can list links using f7 and press S until you get to
either
of those links. Links will only be present if there is a previous or
next

message.
13. If you press B a couple times from the top of the page, you will
find a compose button that you can use to create a new message.
14. Just under the compose button is a button for getting mail.
15. Choosing inbox from the links list will take you back to the
message list.
16. If you have a message with an attachment, you need to open the
message first before you can open the attachment.
17. When the message opens, use the T to move to the table.
18. The attachment link is usually in the table at the bottom of it.
After pressing the T to move to the table, use shift+period to move to
the

end of the table. Use up arrow and you should find the attachments.
19. The name of the attached file should be hyperlinked so press enter
on it.
20. You might need to use Alt+N to move to the information bar where you
can choose to open or save the attachment.
21. To perform such actions as deleting messages, use X to move to the
individual messages in a folder such as the inbox, use spacebar on each
checkbox for a message

middle, or mixed in. So, be aware for that too. Something isn't right but I
don't know enough to know exactly what is happening!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] windows live mail crashes

I am using the latest jaws 12, win 7 32 bit. At least once a week when
replying to an email, windows live mail crashes during spell checking. When
I go to make a correction jaws stops talking for up to a minute. When back
the email to which I was replying is lost. No longer in the in box or
deleted box. Any ideas?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Live Mail

2011-01-31 Thread NCBootman

John,

Windows Live Mail has upgraded to 2011. So, now, control shift c is for add
a contact and it appears you can't get to the list, just a blank form to
add one. The other method described by David I think, did work but you have
to do it, confirm the delete, and then cancel. It's like it gets in a cycle
of confirm or cancel I guess so you could do a series. I have the Home
Student version of Office 2007 so don't have Outlook. I so wish Outlook
Express still worked. Maybe I could upgrade my office package without paying
an arm and a leg but doubt it! Is 2007 better or worse than Outlook Express
or 2003?

Hi there. There isn't much documentation on that program. However, if
you'd like to remove a contact, this should work for you.
1. open Windows Live Mail.
2. Access the Contacts list by pressing Shift Control C.
3. Move to the Contacts list by tabbing.
4. Use your up and down arrows to locate the offending entry.
5. Press the Delete key to remove the contact and confirm when asked that
this is what you want to do.

Unless Live Mail has changed significantly since I used it last, that should
do the trick.
If I missed anything listers, please feel free to throw in your own
comments.
Windows Live Mail is now and always has been a wild child.
It isn't anywhere near as efficient or Jaws friendly as outlook Express was.
As a matter of fact, I stopped using it entirely and added Outlook itself
from my Office 2003 disk.
That works quite well as does Office 2007's version.
There are some differences between the two.
Good luck and welcome to this list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problems with the new update

2011-01-30 Thread NCBootman
I am also seeing a focus problem with the latest update. I use Windows 7 on
a laptop and I find when a page loads, I often have to Alt Tab to get back
to the screen and have focus restored. It's as if there is nothing there
till I do that. If someone knows how to explain that better to FS, we really
need to report it because it is a problem.

I had no problem installing the update, but I find the focus problem is much
worse with the new update. I am running XP SP3, 1gb ram and latest JAWS12 on

setting on the desktop with no activity for a few minutes. Any suggestions

This wasn't a problem but, has anyone noticed that after doing the update
that your default speech vervoscity is set at Intermediate rather than
Beginner, Highest? I use Beginner Highest and noticed that it was set to
Intermediate when I was playing around in the Settings Center /

anyone else. It happened to me on 3 different computers all running XP

My suggestion is to uninstall the update if u went thru the help menu

When I do a check for updates the new update is back there. When the

install this troubled version first and then install the next new

I have never had this problem before with any of FS's updates.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Norton 360

2011-01-28 Thread NCBootman

Mark,

I'm not sure I follow your thought. Norton 360 is set up and works fine for
a sighted person without Jaws. I find that even if I run QuickScan everyday,
it still picks up several tracking cookies. And, my system seems to run
faster by doing this. So, are you saying that I could use the Jaws cursor
and find QuickScan and run the scan and see the results? Or, are you saying
that I only really need to run the Quick Scan once a month?

2011-01-28 Thread NCBootman
am confused. I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7. First, there's a function
key beside the control key. I assume I am supposed to press that along with
the top row key to get a f key. When I press that Func key and the 11th of
those keys with the numpad zero because I have a numpad like a desktop,
nothing happens. Then, you said tab to right click. I'm must be missing
something. Are you saying tab once and then right click?

Hi NCBootMan,
The fastest way to run a quick
scan is to press JAWS key plus f11 to bring up the list of active programs
in the system tray. Then press N. until you land on Nortons 360. Next, tab
to right click and press enter. Finally, Up or down arrow to quick scan
and press enter. This is how I run the quick scans. I try to always get
nortons set to delete all cookies. So, the rest is automatic. Other wise
when the scan is done one needs to use the JAWS curser to delete the
cookies. It works either way. Smile.
