Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

It's kind of interesting. There are quite a lot of them on my phone (a Samsung
j120). I've never scrolled through the entire list. The Talkback screen-reader
seems to handle them rather well though, at least as far as SMS goes.

From what my sighted friend says, these are pictures--all kinds of things:
faces, animals, sports stuff, musical instruments--that pop up on the screen
when you press Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. Something
to make people smile, I guess, though some of the faces were crying. Many more
emoji than on her phone, she said. Shrug. Would be nice to have access as
partially sighted JAWS users do. Not complaining. Just sayin'.

Hey.

Yes, that nVDA feature is, I think, a part of Windows 10 App Essentials. I
haven't played with it. I do use them on my phone (android, not iphone), but
always feel it's kind of a silly thing to do. Still, especially when talking
with my landlady, sometimes a simple emoji is best, as she just wants to go on
and on and on, and I have to indicate I'm listening, somehow. Lol

It is a little odd that JAWS can recognise them but there's no current way to
select one to input in your messages and such.

I was reading on another JAWS List and someone had used an emoji, if that's the
right word. JAWS described it when I was reading with the down-arrow key but
not the left and right arrows, so it would seem that there was no colon and
closed parenthesis to make a smiling face. Windows 10 can, they say, bring up
a list of emoji with Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. But
if it does, JAWS can't see them, and neither can I! LOL. I tried recognizing
the screen, but got no descriptions. I googled and found that there is an
add-on for NVDA that will make these emoji accessible. Not having NVDA
installed, I can't check. It would be fun if JAWS had this since we all send
stuff to sighted friends.

Presumably, everyone can already do this on their iPhones, but alas, no iPhone
yet. So, again, it would be great if JAWS would let me play! LOL.

Just sayin'

Hi,
I'll try my best to address several questions about emoji panel in one go:

Q. What is emoji?
Emoji (a shorthand Japanese for "emotion characters", from Romanization of
"emo" and "ji" (character)) is a picture that represents objects, emotions,
people, events and so on. This came about in the late 1990's where people
wanted to conserve space on data usage yet wanted to express their emotions
to the fullest. This became pop0ular among Japanese mobile phone users via
SMS (short messaging service) before it gain widespread usage in 2010's.

Q. How do I read emoji?
It'll depend on screen reader and synthesizer in use. Some synthesizers do
support announcing emojis, while others don't. Also, the ability to
recognize emojis will depend on how the screen reader processes Unicode data
and instructions sent to speech synthesizers regarding how to process such
characters.

Q. How do I input emoji?
In Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and later, you can browse
and insert emoji by pressing Windows+period or Windows+semicolon. Note that
in 1709 and 1803 (April 2018 Update), only United States English keyboard
layout will let you browse emojis. In Redstone 5 (under development), this
restriction is gone.
In 1709 and 1803, once emoji panel opens, press the arrow keys to move
through emojis. Press Tab to cycle through emoji categories, or if you're
looking for a specific emoji, type the name and the panel will return
suggestions. To insert a given emoji, press Enter.
In Redstone 5, you can still use arrow keys to move through emojis. However,
pressing Tab will not cycle through categories; rather, it'll switch between
emojis and categories. To select a different emoji category, press Tab to go
the categories, then use left or right arrows to move through categories and
press Enter. In case of People category, you can choose a skin tone. Once
the emoji is found, press Enter.

Q. Does JAWS support emoji panel?
Not at this time (according to tests). Some users asked VFO regarding this
matter not long ago.

Q. Does other screen readers support emoji panel?
Write to me privately regarding this matter please (not only to keep the
topic on scope, but also because I am the one who brought support for emoji
panel for a certain screen reader; hint: there will come a day when a
certain scripts will not be required to interact with emoji panel, but
that's for another time).

Cheers,

Narrator reads the lists of emoji. There are several categories, which you can
get to by tabbing. JAWS won't read the lists, but it will read the emoji once
it's pasted into a message or document.
  
However, I've tried several times to copy and paste another, but it won't copy.
The context key says that copy is disabled and control c won't work as it did
before. A bug in Microsoft? Smile. But there are hundreds of emoji in the
various categories. Fun to play with if I can get it to work. Sigh. .

Yes. This new Windows 10 feature still doesn’t' appear to be accessible with
Jaws. I've also come across some emojis by accident with the alt plus numpad
sequence when I've meant to type something else. Accented vowel, º, ñ for
example. ☺ = alt plus #1. ☻ = alt plus #2. ♥ = alt plus #3 and so on. But
considering that there are tons and tons of emojis and that you can also select
shade of skin color for the more ethno-centric conscious folks, it's still
pretty much a no go.
I want to say that Leacy or however you spell it has some sort of emoji
function if you buy their scripts, but I don't really have a need for leasy
products and am not jonesing enough to emoji my heart out to pay for that
specific feature with their script package.
Especially now that it seems to be built in to Windows 10. I would have to
imagine that it'll soon enough be part of the Jaws core function. This of
course will probably be touted as some major new Jaws feature eating up one of
my SMAs instead of addressing long standing bugs though.
You see? A grumpy or angry face emoji would have been perfect at the end of
that last sentence...

Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji

2018-06-21 Thread Cristóbal

LOL.

Just sayin'

Rebecca
