I have had the problem before but I can't recall what version of jaws and
windows I was using.

This must be a problem unique to Windows 10 because I've never had a problem
setting a shortcut key for an application, including setting alt
+ control + shift + J for JAWS. I'm using 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

Cheers!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop

2016-12-16 Thread Adrian Spratt
Louise, first decide whether you want to keep both versions of JAWS. If you do,
and if you decide to use the control-alt-j shortcut for 18, you will first need
to remove it from 17. Or else keep the j shortcut with 17 and create a new one
for 18. To remove a shortcut, follow the same steps, except when you get to
"j," just press the delete key. Escape to get out of the dialog and you should
be fine.

Hi Fred,

Here's another approach.
1. Go to the Desktop with, Windows key + M.
2. Highlight the JAWS icon.
3. Press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS Properties.
4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key combination of
your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other combination you prefer.
5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay button and
press Enter.
I have always had the best luck by 1st, Applying then Okaying in making
shortcut keys stick.
Take care.

Fred,

This JAWS shortcut is notoriously fickle. Try this, which works on my system.
Follow Ed's steps exactly up to and including where you confirm that your
choice of shortcut has been accepted. Then, instead of going to the okay button
and pressing enter, press escape to get out of the dialog. Ed is correct, but
I've found that taking that extra step to the Okay button often undoes the
shortcut. I have no idea why this is, but I recall others reporting a similar
experience.

A couple of points just to be sure. Note that Ed said just to type "j."
Control and alt are assumed unless you type some other key. So adding the
control and alt keys would risk sending the shortcut dialog into a tantrum.

Also, Ed suggested using insert-tab to confirm the shortcut has been entered.
I'm sure he's right, but that isn't the key combination I use. In my case, it's
JAWS key+8 on the numpad.

I automatically reboot after pressing escape.

2016-12-16 Thread Gene Warner
You might have to first go into the properties of the JAWS 117 icon and
delete the existing shortcut key there, then add the shortcut key to the
JAWS 18 icon.

I don't know if Windows is smart enough to remove it for you when you
add it to the JAWS 18 icon.

Cheers!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop

2016-12-16 Thread Mr. Ed
I am using W10 and have never had any issue setting up any shortcut key for
any application. Not sure what the issue is with other people's pc. I have a
little vision and use Jaws and Soomtext at the same time and I can see my
steps always have worked for me.

This must be a problem unique to Windows 10 because I've never had a problem
setting a shortcut key for an application, including setting alt
+ control + shift + J for JAWS. I'm using 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

Cheers!

Adrian, thanks to you guys for the help and I will look into this again this
afternoon. Over the years I have set up the control, Alt plus "j" keystroke
many times and I have run into this problem before and lived without it but
it is nice to have it when using narrator. I am just starting to look at
narrator a little now. Right now when I unload jaws 18 and want to reload
jaws I use the run dialogue. Thanks again to all of you guys.

Fred,

This JAWS shortcut is notoriously fickle. Try this, which works on my
system. Follow Ed's steps exactly up to and including where you confirm that
your choice of shortcut has been accepted. Then, instead of going to the
okay button and pressing enter, press escape to get out of the dialog. Ed is
correct, but I've found that taking that extra step to the Okay button often
undoes the shortcut. I have no idea why this is, but I recall others
reporting a similar experience.

A couple of points just to be sure. Note that Ed said just to type "j."
Control and alt are assumed unless you type some other key. So adding the
control and alt keys would risk sending the shortcut dialog into a tantrum.

Also, Ed suggested using insert-tab to confirm the shortcut has been
entered. I'm sure he's right, but that isn't the key combination I use. In
my case, it's JAWS key+8 on the numpad.

I automatically reboot after pressing escape.

2016-12-16 Thread Adrian Spratt
Escape doesn't function as cancel, not in this case. If it did, this method
wouldn't work for me. It simply takes you out of the dialog.
Mike's direction get to the same place in a different way, except for adding
the "apply" button. Usually, with other dialogs, I press spacebar on the apply
button, but experience on two systems with this particular dialog has made it
unnecessary. In fact, the fewer tabs and other keystrokes, the more likely I
find the shortcut will stick. Still, if "apply" works, great.

Hi Fred,
I assumed you went to the Jaws 18 icon on the desktop and pressed the
application key and went to properties.
Then you tab to short cut and press the letter J. Then do the insert + tab
key to hear that the shortcut key is ctrl + alt+ J. Then tab to ok. Then I
am not sure on this but you might have to reboot your pc for this change to
take place. I guess you can try it first then if it does not work reboot
your pc.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop

2016-12-16 Thread Justin Williams
I just tried it. I het alt enter, then alt k for shortcut. I hit the
letter j, then alt a for apply. Here is what I got.
Access denied. I have to provide administrative access before I can do
that.
I hit the continue button and this is what I got.
 "C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\16.0\jfw.exe"
So, how do I get past administrative access; as far as I know, I'm the
administrator.

You'll probably need to contact Microsoft support instead of Freedom

Hi Fred!

Before going back to check if the short cut key setting held, I usually
click Apply. Pressing Escape is the same as pressing Cancel.

A couple of points just to be sure. Note that Ed said just to type "j." Control

would risk sending the shortcut dialog into a tantrum.

Also, Ed suggested using insert-tab to confirm the shortcut has been entered.
I'm sure he's right, but that isn't the key combination I use. In my case, it's
JAWS key+8 on the numpad.

I automatically reboot after pressing escape.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 shortcut on desktop

2016-12-16 Thread Mike B.
Hi Fred,

Here's another approach.
1. Go to the Desktop with, Windows key + M.
2. Highlight the JAWS icon.
3. Press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS Properties.
4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key combination
of your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other combination you prefer.
5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay button
and press Enter.
I have always had the best luck by 1st, Applying then Okaying in making
shortcut keys stick.
Take care.
