[JAWS-Users] daily tip
Daily Tip: Remove Desktop Icons Over time, the Desktop on your computer can become cluttered with icons for applications and shortcuts. If you don't use a particular icon, select it and drag the icon to the Recycle Bin. Note the deleting a shortcut does not delete the application it is associated with, so you'll still have access to the program. Make sure, though, that the item you wish to delete from your Desktop is actually a shortcut; if it's a file, deleting it will delete the file itself. [JAWS-Users] re-wlm 15 and 'contact problem
Hi graham; I am running Jaws 13 on a windows 7 32 bit machine. I have the same problem, it keeps saying not selected. It works correctly in jaws 12, so it must be a bug in 13. From Jim For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF readers
I have tried FoxIt and Sumatra. Both are small, fast PDF readers, that can run rings around Adobe Reader. Unfortunately, neither works with Jaws or NVDA. With FoxIt, all of the menus are very accessible, just not the PDF content. I have tried contacting FoxIt Software, in an attempt to have them consider tweaking the FoxIt Reader to work with screen readers, but no luck. Maybe if others do the same, they will listen. [JAWS-Users] Evernote.
Am running the recent update of Evernote 4. It appears to work better than 3.5 did, as you can actually configure the note list to a simple list form that obeys normal rules. Notes read smoothly if they are text. I am trying to use the OCR feature available where you're supposed to be able to simply drop a file into Evernote and if it needs scanned and OCRed, it will be. So far I'm having no joy. Anyone got any hints how to do this? Chris Bartlett For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

May I just say that dragging and dropping may not mean a lot to a lot of people on this list and that rather than doing that to unwanted icons on the desktop, which is not easily done for a blind user, it would be mush easier to select them and and then press the delete key. Re: [JAWS-Users] ADOBE X, help!!!
Hi Christopher; the latest version is Adobe Reader X. You need to disable protected view first to get it to work well with Jaws. Do the following: 1. From either your desktop or start menu, press enter on Adobe. The Adobe window is now open, press control + K, to open preferences. Another way to get to preferences is after pressing enter on the Adobe shortcut, press Alt + E, for the edit menu, arrow up to preferences, press enter. 3. When preferences opens you will be in a tree view and should be on the General page, if not arrow up or down until you have General highlighted. It is #4 of 29. Tab until you find a checkbox called enable protected mode at startup, uncheck it, choose yes on the warning you will get to continue. You need to look at 2 more settings so, tab until you have General highlighted again. 4. With General highlighted, press the letter I, until you have Internet highlighted. 5. Tab to, Display PDF in browser, if this box is checked press the spacebar to uncheck it. 6. Tab to connection speed combobox, arrow up / down for the setting that best matches your Internet Providers speed. 7. Tab to the okay button, press enter to close preferences save your changes, press Alt + F4 to close Adobe. If I have missed something or if there is something that should be added, would someone please jump in correct me?! Hope this helps. Take care. It works with jaws, nvda, window eyes, etc. It can open .rar, zip and about a couple dozen other archive types. I will leave it in my dropbox until Friday morning, and then it will be deleted. Yes David it is a free share. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Thumb drive eject
No When you put your thumb drive or whatever you are using, 1, when you put the drive in, and you open it up 2, you are in the main list, or root of the drive 3, copy just the eject USB.exe file, and paste there 4, When you open up a folder up, and when you are done with the folder, and back out to the main list 5, Arrow down to the eject USB.exe file and press enter 6, It will close everything up, and then you can pull out the thumb drive I hope this will help you understand how easy it is. Patti Just read that it would work on an external drive. Do you then eject through the system tray or highlight the drive to eject and use the application key? Thank you. Re: [JAWS-Users] daily tip
there is an application I'm using, I got it for free from somewhere (try googling it) called USB Safely Remove it puts an application in the start menu and when you activate it brings up a list of any USB devices plugged into your machine it also has a set of menu's, the first is actions in which you can disconnect, reconnect, and a few other options to use and I have never had it fail to properly disconnect something when I told it to do so! I use it with jaws with no real problem the only flaw I have found with it is that it tends to interpret any second or third drive type device as the same type as the first one I plug in. I.E. if I plug in a Kingston thumb drive, then a external Hitachi hard drive it will call both of them Kingston thumb drives, although it will mark the first as drive f and the second as drive g so you can figure out which is actually witch and reverse, if I plug in the Hitachi first both are called Hitachi drive though with the drive letter differentiation as above noted. give it a try, as I said its a freebee (it may have come from http://www.freedownloadaday.com/) take care, elf .
