[JAWS-Users] daily tip

2011-09-20 Thread David Ferrin
Daily Tip:
Remove Desktop Icons

Over time, the Desktop on your computer can become cluttered with icons for
applications and shortcuts. If you don't use a particular icon, select it and
drag the icon to the Recycle Bin. Note the deleting a shortcut does not delete
the application it is associated with, so you'll still have access to the
program. Make sure, though, that the item you wish to delete from your Desktop
is actually a shortcut; if it's a file, deleting it will delete the file itself.

Hi graham;
I am running Jaws 13 on a windows 7 32 bit machine.
I have the same problem, it keeps saying not selected.
It works correctly in jaws 12, so it must be a bug in 13.

2011-09-20 Thread John M.
I have tried FoxIt and Sumatra. Both are small, fast PDF readers, that can
run rings around Adobe Reader. Unfortunately, neither works with Jaws or
NVDA. With FoxIt, all of the menus are very accessible, just not the PDF
content. I have tried contacting FoxIt Software, in an attempt to have them
consider tweaking the FoxIt Reader to work with screen readers, but no luck.
Maybe if others do the same, they will listen.

[JAWS-Users] Evernote.

2011-09-20 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Am running the recent update of Evernote 4. It appears to work better than
3.5 did, as you can actually configure the note list to a simple list form
that obeys normal rules. Notes read smoothly if they are text.

I am trying to use the OCR feature available where you're supposed to be
able to simply drop a file into Evernote and if it needs scanned and OCRed,
it will be. So far I'm having no joy. Anyone got any hints how to do this?

[JAWS-Users] Need more details on the 'insert plus Z' quick keys for diff programs on a Windows PC

2011-09-20 Thread Dujari, Prateek
hello.

You may be familiar with say in MS Word if u hit 'insert plus Z' it turns on
quick keys and then u can hit h to jump from heading to heading, T to jump from
table to table etc. I assume such quick keys are also available via JAWS on
other programs on a Windows system.

Where can I find the list of keys available for quick key nav in diff programs
after hitting insert plus z?
Second even in say MS Word, if I hit insert plus Z how do I find out the list
of all the keys and what the accomplish? I cant see this and I just happen to
know the h and the T keys for example from before.

[JAWS-Users] Facebook Application

2011-09-20 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi All;

I received the information below, from another list for all of you Facebook
enthusiasts.

Hi,

Kim Komando just wrote about this fairly cool application call FTalk. Works
on XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

fTalk is a desktop messaging application that works with Facebook. Just
install it and sign in using your Facebook account information.

You'll immediately see all your online and offline friends. You can chat
without opening up your browser. It works like a regular instant messaging
program. However, you can do Facebook-specific things at the same time, like
updating your status.

http://www.ftalk.com/

No idea of how accessible it is. so if anyone tries it, please let me know.
I would try it but do not have a face book account.

Rich

Hope this has helped 1 of you social networking people! Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] ADOBE X, help!!!

2011-09-20 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Christopher;

the latest version is Adobe Reader X.

You need to disable protected view first to get it to work well with Jaws.

  Do the following:

  1. From either your desktop or start menu, press enter on Adobe. The
Adobe window is now open, press control + K, to open preferences. Another
way to
get to preferences is after pressing enter on the Adobe shortcut, press Alt
+ E, for the edit menu, arrow up to preferences, press enter.

3. When preferences opens you will be in a tree view and should be on the
General page, if not arrow up or down until you have General highlighted.
It
is #4 of 29. Tab until you find a checkbox called enable protected mode at
startup, uncheck it, choose yes on the warning you will get to continue.

You need to look at 2 more settings so, tab until you have General
highlighted again.

4. With General highlighted, press the letter I, until you have Internet
highlighted.

5. Tab to, Display PDF in browser, if this box is checked press the spacebar
to uncheck it.

6. Tab to connection speed combobox, arrow up / down for the setting that
best matches your Internet Providers speed.

7. Tab to the okay button, press enter to close preferences save your
changes, press Alt + F4 to close Adobe.

If I have missed something or if there is something that should be added,
would someone please jump in correct me?!

Hope this helps. Take care.

Mike

Re: [JAWS-Users] Win Rar

2011-09-20 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Kelly;

Below are some steps that I've typed up for using 7Zip.
To unzip files:

1. Highlight the file or files you want to unzip. They can be both, .ZIP or
.RAR files or, just 1 or the other. This program has the ability to unzip
both types at the same time.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press, the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard or, arrow down to
7Zip press enter. The first time you use the program you might want to
arrow
down the list to see what options the program has to offer.

4. I arrow down to, extract here, press enter all the time. I do this
because I have a certain folder that all my downloads go into, I extract
all
the files into the same folder.

To compress files:

1. Highlight the file you would like to compress / archive / zip up.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard.

4. Arrow down to, Add to Name of File7z, press enter.

Another way to compress:

I have tried FoxIt and Sumatra. Both are small, fast PDF
readers, that can
run rings around Adobe Reader. Unfortunately, neither works
with Jaws or
NVDA. With FoxIt, all of the menus are very accessible,
just not the PDF
content. I have tried contacting FoxIt Software, in an

consider tweaking the FoxIt Reader to work with screen

Maybe if others do the same, they will listen.

Hi All;

Hope this has helped 1 of you social networking people! Take care.

Hi Kelly;

Below are some steps that I've typed up for using 7Zip.
To unzip files:

1. Highlight the file or files you want to unzip. They can be both, .ZIP
or

.RAR files or, just 1 or the other. This program has the ability to unzip
both types at the same time.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press, the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard or, arrow down
to

7Zip press enter. The first time you use the program you might want to
arrow
down the list to see what options the program has to offer.

4. I arrow down to, extract here, press enter all the time. I do this
because I have a certain folder that all my downloads go into, I extract
all
the files into the same folder.

To compress files:

1. Highlight the file you would like to compress / archive / zip up.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard.

4. Arrow down to, Add to Name of File7z, press enter.

Another way to compress:

1. Highlight the file you would like to compress / archive / zip up.

2. Press the applications / context menu key.

3. Press the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard.

4. Press enter on, Add to archive...

5. Tab to Archive format, arrow up or down to select your choice of
compression method.

6. Tab to, compression level, arrow up or down to choose your compression
level.

7. Tab to, compression method, arrow up or down to choose your compression
method.

8. Keep tabbing through to check out the many other options you have in
this
program. When you are through, press spacebar or enter on okay to start
the

/ zipping compression process.

Hey Gang,
Here is a little program that goes on the root of a thumb drive or your
external drive.
All you have to do is copy the .exe to the main folder, or the root of
whatever you want to remove.
When you get done using your thumb drive press enter on eject and it
closes

everything down, so you can remove it safely.
I will leave it in my dropbox until Friday morning, and then it will be
deleted.
Yes David it is a free share.
Oh, in that folder there is a help txt file, but all you need to copy is
the

eject.exe file.

Hi Christopher;

the latest version is Adobe Reader X.

Take care.

No
When you put your thumb drive or whatever you are using,
1, when you put the drive in, and you open it up
2, you are in the main list, or root of the drive
3, copy just the eject USB.exe file, and paste there
4, When you open up a folder up, and when you are done with the folder, and
back out to the main list

5, Arrow down to the eject USB.exe file and press enter
6, It will close everything up, and then you can pull out the thumb drive
I hope this will help you understand how easy it is.
Patti

Just read that it would work on an external drive. Do you then eject
through the system tray or highlight the drive to eject and use the
application key? Thank you.

Daily Tip:
Remove Desktop Icons

Over time, the Desktop on your computer can become cluttered with icons
for

applications and shortcuts. If you don't use a particular icon, select it
and drag the icon to the Recycle Bin. Note the deleting a shortcut does
not
delete the application it is associated with, so you'll still have access
to

the program. Make sure, though, that the item you wish to delete from your
Desktop is actually a shortcut; if it's a file, deleting it will delete
the

file itself.

2011-09-20 Thread inthane
there is an application I'm using, I got it for free from somewhere (try
googling it) called USB Safely Remove

it puts an application in the start menu and when you activate it brings up
a list of any USB devices plugged into your machine
it also has a set of menu's, the first is actions in which you can
disconnect, reconnect, and a few other options to use and I have never had
it fail to properly disconnect something when I told it to do so!

I use it with jaws with no real problem

the only flaw I have found with it is that it tends to interpret any second
or third drive type device as the same type as the first one I plug in.

I.E. if I plug in a Kingston thumb drive, then a external Hitachi hard drive
it will call both of them Kingston thumb drives, although it will mark the
first as drive f and the second as drive g so you can figure out which is
actually witch

and reverse, if I plug in the Hitachi first both are called Hitachi drive
though with the drive letter differentiation as above noted.

give it a try, as I said its a freebee (it may have come from
